I hate when assault is called bullying.
There is a freaking big difference between bullying and straight on assault.
I struggle to explain this even in my country where the concept of bullying is quite new.
And the repercussions on bullying are more tame that repercussions on assault.

Even to call it assault is already understating it. This is attempted homicide. They went in with the intent to murder the victim and they went in assuming that they could abuse a loophole in the justice system to get away with minor consequences at worst. They knew that their friends, family, and even the police would condone this - because that's what their culture is like. No one in their community wants to deal with this - not the parents (who are obsessed with their "family pride" and how their kids must be "the best), the teachers (who are obsessed with their "school pride" and academic results), the police (who are too incompetent and scared to deal with minors and likely see it as someone else's responsibility).
The funny thing is that if these women were just several years older, they MIGHT have been charged more severely.
It is VERY unlikely that anything about these women's abusive personalities have changed. It is VERY likely that their sadistic and abusive tendencies have worsened over time. It is VERY likely that they will encourage further abuse of other people, or commit more crimes in the future - because they live in a society that condones this sort of behavior. This society that only responds when they can't ignore the problem anymore because it looks bad for them. Hence these "bullying" cases get worse, and they will continue to get worse until enough children die or the school system collapses.
This society has no true consequences, not for the perpetrators or the authorities. It's a society that rewards criminal behavior, and it's no wonder why "vigilante justice" or "underdog" fiction is so popular in Korea. But this in turn creates a hilarious loop - because the people in real life who do fight back, the system slaps THEM down, and tells them "Why didn't you let the authorities dO ThEiR JoB?"
When a society can have no faith in its authority figures, be it teachers, parents, the justice system, the politicians, all of which have been repeatedly proven to be corrupt, then there is truly no point in trying to support the society.

Bullying is when they are under 18 years old and doing the violence. I agree with you. Change it age of assault to 13 years old and we could curb so much with the law working with the schools. Abuse too, and verbal, fear mongering, terrorizing.... kids- these things are not ok at any age.

100% I was bullied throughout elementary school and middle school in the U.S. I did not know what friendship was until high school. But I'm so grateful that I was never a victim of violence. This is assault and NOT bullying. Also, just because they are minors they should not get off, in the U.S. we have juvy - why don't they do something like that in Korea? Also, the behavior they are getting away with as minors only escalates their bullying as they grow older and become criminals or psychopaths.

I don't think the argument is "we can't let this mistake affect their future" i think its more like "Is this individual woman telling the truth" and women folk forget they're assessing that individual woman not women as a group and that gets conflated into some ideological diatribe about women's rights and lionizing a manipulative and deceitful individual as some paragon of social justice. @@moauntain5920While I can't speak for the OP, I too experienced near constant bullying here in the US from K/1st grade all the way through 8th grade. While it mostly wasn't physical like a lot of what we just heard was, it was traumatic in it's own right. What I experienced became so bad that it was easier, it actually hurt LESS, for me to put myself down than hear it from other people. "Stupid," "Idiot," "Moron," "Four Eyes," "Gimp." Those are just a handful of things I was called on a near daily basis, and eventually would use them to refer to myself, because, as I said, it hurt less.
This was in the late 80's and 90's. I'm just about 40 now, and while I have come to learn to love myself, inasmuch as I would not change the person that I am today for anything, even if it meant going back and erasing all of the pain and hurt I've been through, I'm not "okay," now. Part of it stemmed from a physical injury that was inflicted upon me as a baby and has left me partially paralyzed. Part of it now is neurodivergence-ADHD, Executive Dysfunction, maybe ADHD dysfunction, and other similar mental issues-combined with how smart I am. I KNOW how f'd up my life is, and I am mentally incapable of forcing myself to physically change anything. It drives me nuts. I don't hate much in the world... I've actually become very serene over the last few years rather than letting anger get the better of me. It's one of the main reasons I wouldn't change anything. But the one thing I do hate is my own inability to do anything. I know what I need to do. I want to do it. I don't want to live the way I do. But no matter how strong the desire, I can't connect the processes in my brain to actually get me to DO it.
It's a journey, for me. Something that will take my entire life, and I will have good days and bad days. I just wanted to share my experience from bullying, and hopefully try to show you and others like you that it is a lifelong process and not something that someone will just "get over" and "be okay" now. I apologize if I am putting words in your mouth and speaking out of turn, and I freely admit I have no way of knowing if you meant that the way it sounded or if you meant it some other way. Bullying was really common in the US when I was a kid (I'm a Millenial so I can't say what it's like now) but the attacks were usually things like theft, spreading rumors to turn people against the victim, verbal abuse, and sexual harassment to "entertain" other students. It was also traumatic, but I do agree these violent cases from South Korea don't sound like "bullying" to me. Regardless of how old the perpetrators are and what their motivations are, this is physical assault and attempted murder. This shouldn't be in the same category as school kids stealing somebody else's chips or making fun of how someone dresses. This is much more serious and even though I don't think bullying as I think of it is ok, I also don't think it's a crime and I feel it's ok if it doesn't end up on permanent records because kids don't have fully developed brains and they can make mistakes. Burning the crap out of someone and scratching up her chest is not just a juvenile mistake though, that is a crime and it's a sign that the perpetrator has no empathy for other people, and the public needs to know for their safety.

I think I know why the punishments for the bullies are almost nonexistent. It’s because they want to have an image of “low crime rates”. That’s pretty much how a good number of countries get their “low crime rates”.
They don’t want any of these on record so that they have an image of being a civilized country.

I just can't believe The Glory's portrayal of bullying wasn't exaggerated. It should only remain as fiction but these dramas now make me wonder if most of their concepts are based from real life. I KNEW THE BULLIES WERE GONNA GO INTO NURSING my mom is a nurse and the stories she tells me... there is always some dumb drama going on. Their is something about that job occupation that attracts mean girls and bullies some of the nurses act like high school mean girls its so weird (we don't live in Korea BTW)
Edit: I posted this a year ago and just recently seen all the comments firstly my mom is not a bully.
Secondly, this comment was not meant to generalise all nurses hence why I used the word some. My mom is literally a nurse and worked through the pandemic so I know how hard it is for them, nurses deserve more appreciation for how hard they work without them no health care service would function and I have met so many sweet and kind nurses. My comment was just pointing out how the job seems to attract people who are bullies the job itself isn't bad it's just some of the people who seek out the job tend to have bad intentions and it's probably due to the good pay and how you are often dealing with very vulnerable people especially elderly/mentally ill/sick children

I was bullied in elementary school, they didn't get in trouble for bullying but I got in trouble for defending myself; it got to the point that one day I just snapped and reacted violently, I grabbed my biggest textbook and started smacking her over the head, punching, kicking and basically anything nearby became a weapon....the only reason I snapped was not because of what they did to me but because they mentioned that they'd hurt my then baby sister (she is grown now, this was 10 years ago and 10 years ago, she was only 2years old) but my reaction of violence made her leave me alone, I am not for violence but I advocate it for self defense or defending someone you love. The parents of the bully tried to charge me for assault but the police dropped it and basically said I was defending myself. I beat her to the point where she needed stitches on her cheek, I basically ruined her face which she was so proud of before and I have no regret for what I did...she made the mistake of threatening to hurt my baby sister.

In my country actually recently was a case, when physical bullying was caught on camera - girls were beating another girl. Luckily their "friend" broke apart a fight at some point. I dont know what came over me, i walk over to her and slam her head onto the desk. I'm pulling her hair so hard, i scratched her face, 5 boys are holding me to let her go but I didnt. I just saw black. I slammed her head 3x, i was standing and she is just sitting. One of the boys lifted me so i kicked her in the stomach and pulled her hair even more. Literally. Around 6~8 years ago, I had an encounter with one of my bullies. She wasn't a big one, but was an annoying one indeed, she would often call me names, make nasty lies about me and make other people physically assault me twice. You think they will forget about you when they grow up? She bullied me when I was around 10, and the reencounter was when we where 18~19. She was with her friends while I was waiting for my BF to get out of the toilet, and she just casually walked to me and called me, by my _full name._ I saw her face and had all the flashbacks when she annoyed the heck outa me, so I kept playing my game on my phone like it wasn't with me, and it gave me the shivers that she did recognize me even after all those years, with my hair with different color and length, and also with me wearing makeup, and remember my name, my friggin ass long name, _and_ the way its pronounced, because it is a pretty weird name indeed! What a psycho.
She kept calling to me like she was _sure_ I was whoever she was calling to, and with this weird smile on her face, rosy cheeks and all, like I was some good memory to remember. I just looked at her after the 7th call, and told her "pardon? I don't know who you're talking to. My name is _insert very common name here."_ She backed a little like she was unsure, and decided to wait on the corner with some of her friends while observing me. When my BF came I just walked away, but man, I don't want to see this psycho no more in my life.
And if you think this didn't affect me, this did. I refuse to get out of home now~ School is a cursed place, I'm permanently stained with bad luck thanks to it.

What makes my stomach drop is that some people believe The Glory, a series that literally depicts bullying for how it is, is overexaggerating the severity of bullying in South Korea. My teacher, for example, told us to write an essay. One topic was school violence in Korea and whether or not we think the media is overexaggerating. I, of course, said no and had The Glory and other posts and articles as one of my evidence. Yet my teacher still said, "I feel as though The Glory is an exaggeration. The actors were very dramatic. Also, you don't have to be burnt with a curling iron just to be classified as a victim of school violence." The first part, I don't agree with (because this video legit proves that similar things have happened in real life.) And the second part, sure, anything can be considered school violence. But I was just explaining that things can get this bad in South Korea. It's sad and heartbreaking that many people still believe that this type of bullying doesn't exist in countries like South Korea when many streets and hallways of schools here are filled with this kind of violence.

I ended up being told by staff (after my friends broke up the fight) that I "should have known better", because I fought back to defend myself. None of my bullies from over the years ever got any punishment either. I'm from New Zealand. It's so heartbreaking to hear these brutal, cold-hearted cases and the complete lack of consequences. There is a saying in Turkish "insan 7sinde neyse 70inde de odur" meaning "What you are at 7 years old is what you are at 70" it means your personality is already being shaped by then and you are aware of your surroundings and you can start to decide. By 12-13-14 you MUST be able to be held responsible for your actions like adults. These girls fully knew what they were doing and it is no "little mistake" or "just one small problem" it is torture and even a 7 years old would know "curling iron hot, must not touch people with it" There is nothing and I mean nothing that can make burning some one with curling iron more than once "a mistake" This kind of "juvenile" cases should be seperate than other juvenile cases. There is a different between stealing and torture, there is a difference between killing some one during self defense and dismembering a body. I think they shouldn't be judged under juvenile laws.

As someone who was bullied for 3 years straight as a kid in a small community ( In Canada, I am also Canadian ) couldn't just do this., they would have multiple ppl at my door everyday, with them saying they wanted to play, but it was mostly them pushing me around, saying I would never catch them in " tag " which they'd rig, bc they would then verbally assault me, and you can't make a scene, it's too small of a place, and I didnt wanna disturb my parents, at the time, you barely even realize it's bullying/ assault, until its already happening, everytime id eventually leave after the few hours of being verbally assaulted, while I walked or biked away, have had rocks thrown at me, big rocks, and I had many scenarios involving similar, but I had to leave or theyd keep verbally assaulting me, and pushing me around, I couldn't fight back, I was too young, nice, and they were older kids., I was naive, and the main guy had bad anger issues, It got to the point where just before I moved, at the end of my 3 years, he punched me into a black eye, and I couldnt fight back.. I've moved, but my self esteem and self Worth is low, I've contemplated suicide a few times now, and I just can't escape the feeling of being unloved for me, not the mask I feel required to put on to fit in.. I'm trying my best, I've even started working out semi inactively recently.. it's very hard to talk abt bc most can't imagine the feeling, tbh I can't even.. maybe it was some sort of self defense, but I never cried while getting punched, I must've repressed my feelings lots, bc I can't even remember how the fist felt hitting my face anymore, but I woke up and my parents asked me if I was alright, well ofc it was the black eye i never knew I had until the day after.. sorry for the scrambled story, it's hard to recall everything, this started when I was like.. early 10 yo, until I was late 12 yo, early 13 yo. I'm now almost 16, I've been forced to repress my emotions, and learn how to cope by gaining knowledge/ skills, but now I'm too mature for my age group, and it's even harder to find love, and I still get made fun of after moving far away, I still get name called, even been sexually assaulted multiple times, bc as a guy, it's somehow " normal ", and also during those 3 years, I was groomed, I never fell for their trap, luckily, but they asked me, when I was too young to know abt s_x if id do it with them, they were an older female friend.. 3 times in 1 year, when I was 11 I believe. Luckily, again, I never said yes, but I believe it to still be an attempt at grooming, I've had ppl threaten to kill me, even chase me with a broken glass bottle, used to have kids kick my bike, and the Older ones would name call, I only had like.. 2 true friends, one was a bit far, the other also bullied me for a year, ofc he had good reason, we are still friends, me and the 2 true friends, i mean. That bully of mine is now into drugs I hear. Surprise, surprise. Either way, not so easy to make any commotion, when that's what kids our age do anyways. And I couldn't worry my parents... I was too young, too naive. And I'm still young, the one thing I want, is to just be a kid. And even tho I am a kid, the one thing I can't seem to do is be a kid, I have Adult responsibilities bc I'm more mature., so I'm forced into more, I even have insomnia now, yet I'm told to do more than my sister, who's also older, btw., this is just life, sadly it's hard not to feel lonely, or truly loved.

Trash.", or some variation, and being young and naive, it made me feel like I needed their validation, so I would go out inevitably, to be bullied again. The school did nothing, until It got so bad I even started bullying for a month or two. And ofc only when I started bullying so I then wouldn't be bullied, would the teachers make me write sentence long apologies to the one kid I lightly bullied, I regret Bullying the kid, but I was so nice, I barely said any offensive words. Just did it so I'd stop being abused and hurt in class and outside., and yet I got in trouble for it.... my parents had to call the principal like, 4 times, for me and my sister, and they'd just ignore the issues. The principal and teachers allowed, and watched me get bullied, my bike kicked, my body shamed.. I wasn't even that big.. really hard to feel not fat and shamed when still, I get made fun of for liking certain games, liking anime, etc. I can't even enjoy what let's me escape what I feel is a personal hell, and this is only 3 years of my now nearly 16 years of life, and issues.

I completely understand your experience despite being from a different country. I dislike the term bullying because people think it’s synonymous to teasing when it actually means abuse. Bullying doesn’t happen because the victim did anything wrong, but because the perpetrators are looking for someone to take out their anger on. What makes it worse is that many bullies are extremely manipulative, so classmates, friends, teachers, and parents will often gaslight the victim for speaking out. I have zero sympathy for bullies regardless of their past or age. Nothing is redeemable about hurting innocent people. If the bully was a child, I don’t care. When I was bullied, I was a child too. I never got to experience a proper childhood or grow into a healthy adult because of what they did. Do children not deserve justice?

I feel like a lot of other international fans would also feel this way if they realized what Korean school bullying actually implies. Even if these are extreme cases, relative to basically attempted murder, a "minor" instance that isn't deemed newsworthy is probably still pretty severe. This is straight up physical and psychological torture. Clearly the word bully has a much more serious connotation in Korea than in other countries. As a child who was bullied horribly, i couldn't understand why my parents were so angry at what was happening to me, i feared embarrassment even from them telling the school what was happening to me but hearing these stories I completely understand. It doesn't matter that they're children those monstrous actions turn them into monstrous adults and they should be punished to the fullest extent for the harm and trauma they cause other children.

a lot of times teachers would get angry with me for going to them about being bullied in elementary school. even when my mom took it to the principal he was just like “well maybe if they weren’t such a crybaby they wouldn’t be bullied so much.”

The South Korean police and the justice system are so double standard is actually ridiculous how the bullies barley get any consequences of their actions meanwhile the victims are left traumatized for life I thought the police and justice system protects and gets justice for these victims but I guess not

This is why victims choose to stay silent or take their own lives because telling adult like police, teacher or their parents won't do much and it will only get worse for them. Up until this day, bullying is still the main reason most koreans commit suic*de. They are not scared of adults anymore. Korea is not as flowery like we see in Kdramas. It's hell wrapped as heaven.

South Korea is a pretty backward society. They advanced too fast that their legal system, their culture, their men’s mentality and their old generation is basically very outdated and questionable compared to most countries except countries that notoriously abuse women today like in Afghanistan, ect.

This kind of bullying shit wanted to start on me when I was in high school, and I didn't stay silent. In my family, they always taught me not to get into fights but to stand strong for myself, and my mom would beat me if she heard that I was bullied by someone and didn't react. One day, the bullying got to the point that I didn't give a shit anymore about getting quicked out of the school, I got into massive fights with the bullies (boys and girls) and I told them it was either they kill me or I kill them. I told them my mom didn't suffer to pay my school fees for a random girl or guy to shit on my head. I got punished both at school and at home, but in front of my teachers, my family kept defending me no matter what.
This is how I want to raise my future kids, we don't fight and give importance to bullies, but if it starts going far and the teachers and all who are supposed to protect you at school are not doing anything, defend yourselves and we'll talk about the rest at home.

Why are students so cruel in South Korea? I mean, cruel people or students exist everywhere but no one goes to this extent of cruelty just because she picked up a phone call. It's so stupid and petty to do that for her plus wrong to bully her when she had done no harm to them.

Because hierarchy defines your entire life in Korean society. This is reflected even in the language. Bullying is just a symptom of a larger problem rooted in traditional social relationships. In general, bullying among minors is a common thing in any country.
I don’t know what the situation is in a place where you live, but in my country 55% of students expirienced some form of bullying. And believe me, there are some shocking stories of rape, broken ribs and limbs. No one just made a dorama about these stories.

In countries where saving face is extremely important, foreigners can use this to their advantage. Be confident and unabashedly foreign. Make a fuss if you ever feel threatened. Most of their power comes from being able to blackmail you with loss of face, but if your response to that is "bring it on", then they're the ones who lose face from challenging someone who plays by different cultural rules.

I’m glad I watched this before “The Glory.” I was bullied in elementary school, I think this series might make my PTSD (I served 2 combat tours for the US Army) go off the charts. So sad hearing of no consequences. In America a couple of those cases would have put the bullies in Juvenile Detention, or even adult prison, for years. But America has a “school shooting” problem that is just out of control. 😢

@@vilet5257 I wouldn't smile if such a thing happened, but I wouldn't cry either, since I know better. Words don't mean anything on their own. There's the meaning that each person gives them, but it ultimately doesn't mean anything to you, unless you decide to give those words some kind of value. Same goes for everyone else. If you feel upset by something its your responsibility, not the person's who said it, words only hurt you if you let them. People choose to react to words in a certain way, like be offended at "slurs"

    • @Blooming09

@@_stillborn Sure words only hurt you if you let them but there's also a meaning that the person saying it gives them and if you know that the person saying them has ill intentions, it is a normal human reaction to be offended by such words. Since the person saying them attaches meaning to the words and doesn't think twice before throwing it at others, they should definitely be held accountable for their actions. Also, different people have different ways to react to situations so u may think "mean words dont mean shit" but there are people who have feelings in them and feel upset so if u can't empathize with someone who has been through so much, at least don't try to pick a fight.
