The fact that the one girl who said “isn’t this the kind of situations where they tell us to stay put while they run for their lives.” Was so accurate it’s sad
The U.S. Navy was denied permission by the South Korean Navy & Coast Guard to participate in the rescue, when the USS Bonhomme Richard was there, with plenty of Marine Corps Transport Helicopters to rescue the whole lot of them.
“We didn’t check the cabins but it seems most of them are out” the fact that this is a conversation between the Air Force and coast guard only makes this even more horrifying.
Only advice you can give to anyone on a sinking ship is: 1. Don't get trapped inside. Stay outside, stay on top, stay visible for rescuers. 2. If there's time, find anything you can use to float with/on once the ship has sank. 3. If you can see land, make your way towards it.
@@LETMino85 Yeah, with the Titanic i believe people still inside were locked in or asleep whereas everyone else was trying to get to a life boat. But i do understand that these kids were told to stay where they are. But i'd expect after a certain amount of time for them to take their own initiative to leave the ship. But perhaps they only decided once it was already too late.
What exactly would it take for normies to realize this, and everytime something like this happens, it's a sacrifice, people were paid to do it, roles were set and consequences for said accomplishes faked. I do not understand how npcs still don't get it 😅😂
Well if every way out is blocked by fire in that burning house, how whould you get out? :/ btw this is kinda a secret buuut... im kinda scared of big ships and boats.. ye ik xD
Yeah! It's like the point the girl made in the beginning. I think it was something along the lines of "Don't they always say to 'stay safe and keep put' and then just leave? And the people who don't follow those order survives?". That girl sounds absolutely right in this case!
The students trusted thier teachers, the teachers trusted the crew members and the crew members trusted their captain... And the captain escaped faster than anyone...
The New Yorker could have dug deeper and told you the names of the owners of the boat and all their wealthy and powerful friends who allowed this disaster to happen. But it didn't. The New Yorker is a disgrace.
Surely he must have been charged with treason and faced the death penalty for abandoning those children on his ship… assuming he hasn’t already killed himself.
The diver literally spoke the fact that they wouldn’t need any divers if they have saved before fully sinking of ship but all they did was just reporting each other not trying to save people. It’s heartbreaking 😭RIP💐
those girls in the beginning saying “isnt this the situation where they tell us to stay put but they run away by themselves? and those who disobeyed and ran away survived, like that one subway accident?”
I hope those girls did what they had to do when they know what to do ;(( they sort of predicted their fate. But they followed instructions and we can't blame them.. ;((
@@flourishwithzel Asian countries are pretty strict in following your elder/superior orders. The irony being the one's that didn't follow the orders elsewhere would've been seen as problem/bad kids despite being right in these type of situations.
liz suguitan i think any student would follow the adult’s instructions at the ship.. since we are always told that the adults know whats best for us. This tragedy is truly heartbreaking and all the students and passengers must have been terrified..
They didn’t even make the civilian divers retrieve the bodies. The civilian divers felt guilty the searched bodies for months. They are truly the only humanity left on earth
I heard that one of the drivers who retrieved their dead bodies committed suicide 2 years after the incident because it was a traumatizing experience and the kids were begging to save them.
Well the government divers were not trained. I well trust that if they had enough experience they would’ve. But the government should have prepared enough to expect situations like this and trained them. The divers would’ve also not been required had the crew and coast guard communicated better as the situation deteriorated.
They most definately should have tug boated the ship closer to shore immediately the fact they had to retire their PM before that happened says a lot. But like maybe not tell the kids in a sinking ship to stay put especially in a society(I'm not gunna go into detail here)where your life is pretty much over if you don't follow the rules and are always striving to be at the top and not be in trouble.
The diver says, “I remember this completely. How do you, the elites of our society say that you don’t remember?” The families/people behind him breaking down after he says that is so sad because they too will always remember while the elites “laze around” as the other guy says
I hate the fact that they had so much time to get to the deck and get rescued, but the captain told them to stay put and all of them just drowned, when they had so much time to escape. Their deaths were preventable.
Right like they would’ve been better off jumping into the water. The whole coast guard shd be put on trial for that too for not trying to save them and telling them to stay put.
@@sheanthesheep8816 it was the captain who ordered everyone to stay put. In the call at 3:00, the coast guard told the captain it is his judgement order evacuation. He is the one in the scene and in the position to order the passengers, not the coast guard. But instead, the captain escaped without ordering evacuation. And might not have told the coast guard that there are still a lot of passengers inside. The fault of the coast guard here is their incompetence or inefficient rescue operation.
Everyone had life jackets. If only they were not stuck inside the ship...they would have made it. I didn't see many lifeboats in the ship so that must have been one of the reasons why the captain asked everyone to stay inside their rooms.
Couldn’t agree more.. even the rescue team confused they didn’t see anybody jump to the water at the beginning.. I know when ship sinking it is dangerous for anybody around the ship, because it will pull water and things around the vessel as they sunk, like strong gravity, but it is much more better than trapped inside and do nothing.
24:13 "open this gate! Kids were killed while waiting. They waited and died." "The kids were killed waiting. Don't tell me to wait." This basicaly breaks my heart.
The statement at the beginning when the girl says "those that listened to instruction died and those that didn't lived." I felt that, along with other statements. Those kids were doing as they were told and died being obedient and that breaks my heart. If they were given the opposite instructions most if not all of them could have survived. That hurts.
If these kids were Westerners they would not have obeyed this instruction, however Asians are accustomed to obeying their superiors which this tragedy so clearly reveals and it cost them their young lives, so very sad. The President spent the day in bed! Shows her complete lack of empathy!
@paperchasin23 First of all, don't put such an arrogant statement under a documentary of literally hundreds of people dying and second, I agree to some extend but not all rules are bad. There's a reason why school kids should attend it. There should be a line between completely obeying and not obeying at all. Maybe it would have saved your life in this particular situation, but does breaking rules help you when you want to find a job? A definite no.
@@corafabian567 Yes. Its true both of you say. But in America leadership and thinking for yourself is stressed while in Asia respecting leaders and government is bad even when the leaders are wrong. this is seriously the worst thing. like.. you're in a chopper. how do you know? oh i saw 3 people leave the ship. and no one else is leaving the ship. if there were more people, they'd have left the ship by now... like what kind of brain do all these people have.
@@stvnynd4265 Actually no. There were frew crews who helped some of the students to safely get off. But sadly couldn't help them all. I remember there being a teacher who guided some of the students to the top of the ship to be saved. But she couldn't help herself. The only one at the fault here is the Captain since he was the first one to get off and he was acting as if he was apart of the students/teachers etc. He didn't help and he told everyone to stay put and wait for help. If he told everyone to try to get out slowly and carefully maybe a lot more of the students would have been saved. But those kids stayed in the ship and didn't even try to get out because they listened to what was said on the speakers and waited for the help to arrive. Students who didn't listen to what was said, got out and got saved.
The fact that 90% of the ferry was still on surface yet they still decided to keep those people inside until it fully submerged is incomprehensible. How sickening and disgusting.
EXACTLY 😭 Like why, sorry to say this but like are they dumb or stupid! Like what is wrong with them they could have said stand up and move that side at least So the Teacher's can hold them and they can at least try to get out But instead they let the teenagers/children to stay there This is so horrible 💔
When it comes to a choice between following your years of strict obedience and compliance training or following survival instincts, the strongest wins out, namely, compliance.
there was also a U.S. navy ship (USS Bonhomme Richard LHD-6) that SPECIALIZED in water and air rescue with 1000 marines on board that offered the SK government to help TWICE but they refused both times for their pride..
They offered to help with search of bodies afterwards as well but the conditions were so dismal that divers could not go in safely. They had made a list of safety conditions and improvements for the South Korean government to fulfill before they could help with the dive, but the South Korean government refused after seeing it and decided to move forward with rescue through another Korean company which proved largely unsuccessful.
I think thats the problem with korean society. Pride and the reluctance to take the iniative if their superior tells them to stand down, even when they know they are in the wrong...
More the fault of the coast guard. Its their job to have courage. Considering they were on scene when the captain evacuated its fair for him to assume they would conduct an orderly evacuation. Ya know considering its supposed to be their job.
He just told everyone to stay put while he saved himself. I would've gave my life to save them because they're just kids and now they're never gonna be able to see their family again. If you watch the one or two minute video of it you'll see the boys last words were so heartbreaking😭

That made me cry. If she was under the wrong management, she'd get scolded for not being professional enough. If she was very lucky, she'd have gotten a pat on the shoulder for we're humans after all.
Her crying made me realize she’s also just under the command of the elites. She’s not here to fight anyone. She did the bravest thing despite who she had to be, she had sympathy, she had a heart. I don’t know what was going through her head at that very moment. But a tragedy’s effects ripples endlessly, rightly so, a tragedy like this should never happen again.

Yeah, the radio communication was solid evidence of gross negligence. And Gross Negligence is a grave criminal offense in most countries. Were these officials not prosecuted? I find it mind-blowing that SK law had them walk away like nothing happened and poured all the blame at the captain.
they assumed so because the ones in the cabin are the ones who should go out last and the captain is the one who should administer for instructions or who should be the one who made the call. if nobody is in the cabins that SUPPOSEDLY means no civilian will be inside the ferry...but because of the selfishness of the captain who escaped then told everybody to stay put - the civilians died.

@@hvrtrie right. One of them really said “it’s a shame they couldn’t land a helicopter on the boat earlier, because it would’ve made a scene”….like wtf?
The most disturbing aspect of this tragedy was that it was completely avoidable. Almost everyone on that ferry could have been saved if it weren't for the cultural need to put public image ahead of peoples lives. Instead of staging a rescue, misleading the public and then attempting a cover up, the authorities could have actually organised a successful rescue and saved hundreds of lives.
@Brad Carman Was that the Captain's decision? I believe the owners of the ferry were very greedy and known for cutting corners. They hired the Captain on a temp basis.
This is so routine in countries with unenforced loading and related protocols that, unfortunately, it has happened many, many times before and will continue to happen many times in the future unless practices change. John Pinette even did part of a comedy routine about these events, calling them "nay-nay ferries" and joking about the governments always saying, "there's going to be an investigation" as if they don't know why it happened.

"We didn't check the cabins but we can presume most of them are out" If the captain just told them simply "get out of your cabins and get out" instead of "stay in your cabins" so many people would be alive rn.
WHAT baffles me is how they even came up with that presumption anyways! Footage around the ship shows hardly anyone in the waters, meaning they knew everyone was still trapped inside! They just wanted to believe their own lies that everyone had gotten out.

There is another story that was not shown in this video, but was the most tragic. At the beginning of the incident, the Korean media misrepresented that all the students of the Sewol ferry had been rescued, so the parents were relieved and the rescue was delayed. The school also informed parents that all of them had been rescued due to this misinformation, and the parents cheered. But in reality it wasn't. Two hours after the misinformation, the parents could hear that most of the students had been locked up.
Also that their president at the time took about 5 hours to get to the scene after doing her make up and meeting a friend. She was also friend with the owner who was embezzling money and she allowed his shenanigans to continue. Yet she wasn’t to blame even though she let him. Those thieving awful people.
"I told my daughter to follow the guidance. And that was my biggest regret." Can’t imagine the mother’s pain, even though it’s not her fault at all and they put their trust on someone who’s selfish and not worthy (the captain and his crew, not the teachers). May all the victims Rest In Peace.

Definitely. Like, the students already wore life jackets. If they instruct them to jump before the ship completely sink could save their lives. Yeah, the temperature during that time is super cold and staying in water is not a good idea. But there's higher chance to survive in an open water. The fact that people can survive for atleast in a days in cold water. The captain is selfish that he save his life first than to give proper instructions to the students and teachers.
When they keep on telling and announcing to the students/passengers to stay calm and stay put and don't move. And then, they have the guts to presume that everyone escaped! They're a murderers! They killed those kids. It's heartbreaking watching this kind of thing happened.
They need an efficiency check on all their rescue departments, where is the “confirmation call”? So many rescuers but nobody bother to check, please wake up, are they even legit or for show?

Only advice you can give to anyone on a sinking ship is:
1. Don't get trapped inside. Stay outside, stay on top, stay visible for rescuers.
2. If there's time, find anything you can use to float with/on once the ship has sank.
3. If you can see land, make your way towards it.

The fact that they had civilian divers retrieving the bodies instead of the government is so ridiculous to me
They didn’t even make the civilian divers retrieve the bodies.

The only one at the fault here is the Captain since he was the first one to get off and he was acting as if he was apart of the students/teachers etc. He didn't help and he told everyone to stay put and wait for help. If he told everyone to try to get out slowly and carefully maybe a lot more of the students would have been saved. this is breaking my heart

The fact that the captain literally escaped leaving his passengers on board is heartbreaking and disappointing!

And worse saying he didn't know that he had to plan an escape route
and of course, DISGUSTING1!!
I though the captain was the last person to leave a sinking ship - not the first!
The S. Korean emergency response seems almost non-existant. These people had over 48 hours to attempt rescue yet never did. That makes it murder in my opinion.

"We didn't check the cabins but we can presume most of them are out"
If the captain just told them simply "get out of your cabins and get out" instead of "stay in your cabins" so many people would be alive rn.
WHAT baffles me is how they even came up with that presumption anyways! Footage around the ship shows hardly anyone in the waters, meaning they knew everyone was still trapped inside! They just wanted to believe their own lies that everyone had gotten out.
@@jinphany. IKR. Nothing explains this except for the fact that it was intentional. I even read somewhere that the fisherman volunteered to help but were denied.

It's simple, if ship is sinking get life vests on everyone and get on the top deck. If they would have told this instruction everyone would be alive rn.
It was a cult mass murder ritual their is a cult that runs the south korean government like a puppet
It kills me that the civilian diver felt more guilt than the ones who could have did more. Those weren’t his demons to live with or die with.
Like the one diver said they while in the ship it was like a maze, completely dark, they had to reach out with their hands to see. Can only imagine how traumatized he was to reach out and stumble on touching a dead body. That would scare and traumatize anyone but he did dozens of times so they could be found.
