They say to the passengers to stay put in order to keep their OWN ways to escape clear and unobstructed. Sometimes even taking all of their personal luggage with them, like Schettino of Costa Concordia did. Sometimes they fail to declare "ABANDON SHIP!" at the end - so that nobody will witness them fleeing, or simply forgetting that insignificant detail, being too occupied with their own self-rescue. It is just obvious!
I have said it before and I’ll say it again, I am living for those children, I used to take life for granted and I used to want to take my own life but when this happened, I promised that I would live for them. I may have never known them but their deaths really broke my heart and it still hurts. May they all Rest In Peace. 🕊💜

I became a Registered Nurse (RN) after I was hit by a 3/4-ton GMC pickup truck and thrown about 25-30 feet into the air before landing in a mud puddle as a junior in high school. The kindness and compassion led me to begin an 18-year career as a RN until my back gave out and I became disabled about 10 years ago. It's a tough career especially now but I have met so many incredibly wonderful people during my time as a nurse.

What was worse, the US had a carrier nearby with boats in the water and soldiers ready to assist in the rescue. Korean officials denied their requests to join in the rescue out of fear they'd be perceived as weak by asking for foreign assistance. Days later, the Korean officials finally allowed foreign professional divers to come in, but they left as it was clear the Korean officials were trying to use them for PR, making them feel unsafe when coast guard officials wouldn't stop messing with their gear for pictures and video.
it's interesting that they called out the passive and obedience they teach the children. and I agree that a change should be made. following instructions is important, but following your instincts especially in a life of death situation is even more important.
above all, the captain should've instructed everyone to get up on the top deck so they can get ready to jump off the gradually subsiding boat. they all had lifejackets on, which is about the only right thing that happened. listening to that instruction would've been enough. but no, the captain was the first to flee himself onto a lifeboat when he could've just given this simple instruction. the government authorities were a complete no-show and display of incompetence as well, but again, how hard is it to tell all passengers on board to get on top deck and jump if needed?

You're wrong tho. What the authorities here did is despicable. But you can't say something as insane as "following your instinct is more important than instructions prepared by skilled people". That's how people refused to wear masks or to vaccinate their children against smallpox only to have their children later on die due to a weak immune system. When something is wrong on a sea vessel, never stay below deck until you know exactly what is going on. You feel a degree of listing, get a lifejacket on and get moving.
Even with cultural differences, it's extremely difficult to understand how a crew and captain can leave a sinking ship, without first looking after the safety of passengers. Would think that is a responsibility you've excepted and may face some day, working on and managing ship. The students staying in their cabins is at least explainable - they've been taught to respect and follow adults. The crew leaving was pure cowardice. I’m a Korean living in the United States currently and this incident and the extreme mis-leadership shown by the captain of the ship has nothing to do with cultural difference. Anyone with common sense know this was cruel and clearly evil. This was not and will NEVER be accepted to us Koreans.
The cause is well known, over loaded cargo, no ballast water, the second in command made a 25degree turn which made the cargo move and the centre of gravity shifted, the ship then listed at 20degrees... Water came in and the list got worse until the ship capsized.
I was teaching English at a Korean middle school when this happened. It left me feeling like the school might suddenly lose most of an entire grade, the students and their homeroom teachers. If the halls were empty I felt as if my students had vanished and I wanted to be reassured that they were still there. I can't even imagine what it was like for the survivors at the Danwon High School.

I can totally understand the emotional pain and sheer heart break from just the thought, no less the possibility that all those young dreams could be stolen from under your wing. true, but don't forget that the kids themselves didn't know what was happening. They believed that the captain has studied for this and knew best, so they would've listened to him not knowing he was already off the ferry. Besides that, even the coast guard took way too long to answer and the government refused help from Japan and U.S. naval services, who were nearby. Don't blame the victims.
That is truly the problem with most Asian societies.. I am from an Asian country myself, but at least where I am, people's ability to distinguish between right and wrong remains to be a stronger factor for decision-making than blind obedience to authority.

Regardless, those children should never have died. Had one competent person (meaning, with proper training in seamanship) stepped up to coordinate an evacuation, those children may have lived. Certainly more would have lived if a timely, coordinated rescue had occurred. What happened is and was absolutely inexcusable and it always confused me as to why there was no foreign presence assisting in the recovery. If you remember the civilian divers talk about how decrepit and really unserviceable the diving equipment of the Korean government divers was, one can’t help but think why there was no international presence. There are many countries who routinely reach out and offer help in the minutes and hours during and after a disaster. To find out that help was refused, especially after such an inept and almost nonexistent rescue and flawed recovery, is unfathomable and unforgivable. This is especially true now knowing that the government was aware that the Sewol’s design made the possibility of survivors finding air pockets after it capsized unlikely or impossible. It’s all simply heartbreaking.
This wasn't the first time and certainly won't be the last I heard the story "Don't panic everything is fine, everyone stay in your cabins" and everyone dies because of that. You bet your ass if I ever find myself in a ship and the captain says that line I will be on the main deck next to a lifeboat the next minute
The response of the captain (telling the passengers to not move and to stay still) and the coastal guards in their rescue efforts (or the lack thereof) is so very bizarre. The ship took 2 hours to submerge fully. All those 304 passengers and crew could have been easily saved as most were wearing safety jackets and there were American and Japanese ships nearby ready to help with the rescue. .

My child could have been among them victims... I can feel the trauma of this horrific incredible event. Notice the timing similar to the Titanic, a hundred years before.
Why in the world were the students told to stay in their cabins and be sent to a certain cold undersea grave? A large portion could have saved themselves if they had only headed for the top as the ship listed. There were plenty of fishing boats around to pick up the survivors.
The crew weren’t trained in evacuation procedures or even how to use the ballast tanks which might have corrected the problem before it happened. There were also multiple problems with various pieces of vital equipment including the tannoy and internal radios. Add in illegal/suspect alterations and poor maintenance, overloading of the ship with both people and cargo, plus bad planning of the route (there was an alternate route which would have meant not going through strong currents and bad weather, but was rejected because it added a whopping 8 miles to the already long route.
The thing is the coast guard and rescue team tried to prevent fishing boats from getting near the boat. They even refused the U.S. and Japan's help. Plus the kids didn't realize the boat was sinking until water came in and the boat was tilting.
I can't believe how they just rejected the help from Japan coasts and american naval ships or even the locals there that are willing It's outrageous... Like why not accept it?? For what??

The people who comment about how awful it was that the adults would leave children to die because of public image etc, reminds me of reports I've encountered where school girls in muslim countries are left to die in burning buildings because the firefighters are not allowed to see non-family females who aren't fully dressed, etc. Such nonsense.
The Sewol Ferry disaster is an absolute disgrace for the South Korean Government, the South Korean Coast Guard and the Owners and Operators of the Sewol Ferry! To all the Family's who lost their Children and Loved ones in the Sewol Ferry Disaster, as my heart breaks for every one of you that has been touched by this Tragedy, but for all the families who have lost loved ones onboard the Sewol Ferry their heartbreak is being made even worse by the constant hiding of the Truth by all the parties involve with the Sewol Ferry, the South Koren Coast Guard and the South Korean Government! To be honest i think the Judge who oversaw the Investigation into the sinking of the Sewol should of jailed all the crew of the Sewol and the crew of the Cost Guard Vessel that didn't board the Sewol Ferry to make sure that ever passenger had been evacuated before backing away while the Sewol Ferry sunk, as some alone time in jail may of given all these individuals the time to remember what actually occurred during the Sinking of the Sewol Ferry! I would also like to know how the Sewol kept operating without any type of real Maritime Safety Accreditation, and were instead operating with forged paperwork? There needs to be a Governmental Website for each county where passengers are able to check the accreditation of the Safety of the Vessel and people Crewing the Vessels, so passengers can travel with some sort of peace of mind that the Ship they are traveling on has had a fairly recent safety inspection, and the Crew have also been accredited for Emergency Procedures for the Vessel they are on! As If the South Korean Government hasn't made sure that every vessel operating in their waters has current proper Accredited Maritime Safety Paperwork to be operating in South Korean waters then the current Government also needs to step down as well, as if the Government isn't making sure these shady companies are operating accredited Ships in their own Waters then the next Sewol Tragedy is just a matter of when not if it is going to happen! I really prey that all of the High School Students and their Teachers are Resting in Peace! But unfortunately i don't think this will happen until the full truth is revealed behind the Sewol Ferry sinking and all the parties responsible for the deaths of all these High School Students and their Teachers are finally brought to justice!

When the captain was asked if he was being ordered to set up a plan for saving the passengers he'd replied he didn't remember anything. Bro, that's impossible to believe. Students were ordered to stay put while waiting but what happened you left the ship first leaving hundreds of more passengers inside struggling to wait and most of them are students but it only made worse. More lives could have been saved if the captain decided to let everyone jump out of the ship and wait for rescue cause they have life vests. Deepest condolences to the families of victims.

I have seen other coverage of this tragedy which stated that the ship was abruptly turned onto a different heading, and the suddenness of the sharp turn and the weight of the additional accommodations fitted high up on the superstructure and never signed off by a marine architect, combined with the heavily overloaded state of the ship to initiate an unrecoverable list.
That and the fact that the captian was continually draining the water held at the bottom of the ship, that's used to help correct a tilting boat, because he wanted the boat to be lighter so he cod overfill it more with passengers.
Plus the fact that cargo wasn't properly secure inside. Once ship start tilting, all went on the side make the things impossible to stop. Saw video from dash cam of one of the cars from inside of farry... It was like parking full of cars at once moved to one side instantly causing damage and split second after water started getting inside.

Yes, all passengers should be led to upper levels and common large areas, with easy access to and from the outside. NEVER OMG NEVER sent back to their cabins, hidden away from rescue in a maze of tight corridors, small doors, and loose objects. That was murder.

Because I am from Syria, my country was at that time in complete chaos and still, then I left my country in search of safety, I did not know about this incident until today, and I cried a lot for what happened, I really feel sorry and sorrow 😔 for these students and their families, a strange feeling I feel, I will not be able to sleep easily after knowing the story, justice is to put all those responsible for a ship and sink it in the same place where the ferry sank after locking the doors on them so that they can feel what the children felt
Moral of the story: trust the authority at your own peril. Still, watching the video of the teachers forcing the crying students to wait in their coffin while the ship continue to sink is hard to stomach.

I came here after watching the deep analysis for "Spring Day" BTS song which was tributed to the victims of Sewol Ferry tragedy. I had no idea about this disaster due to hating watching the news. It is so heartbreaking, it made me cry. The biggest fear of every parent is losing a child. I can`t imagine the hell those poor kids have gone through while waiting for help from the outer world and the parents who were begging to save their kids. I can`t stop crying, it hurts soo much. Definitely one of the roughest tragic moments in recent memory. The ship itself is actually still sitting there in the thumbnail even five years after it was raised and placed. It’s still pretty much in same condition, think only small pieces towards the stern have been removed.
once the ship was on its side- everyone deep inside the ship were doomed. you cant access stairways and doors because the entire thing is almost upside down. also i think a lot of them drowned wearing life jackets inside a submerged ship.
That's a FIRST I heard "the boat was overloaded" makes sense to why this boat was sinking by the next day at breakfast as the survivor said in another vid. This is so sad an traumatizing.
The exact cause is irresponsible humans. They changed the stability of the ferry and then still didn't even try to be careful. The crew turned too sharp making the ferry lean too far and take on water. It was a tragedy as soon as the ship left port.
After all the examinations of the crews "logic" in ordering the passengers to remain in their cabins, the question that remains, is for each person in the "chain of command" maybe one that has left many of them without an answer, "why didn't I listen to my heart and ignore the command to order them to stay in their cabins ?"
We had plane trouble on a flight home from India years ago. We were not permitted to fly out of Seoul and held in the airport all day when the authorities knew we needed to be housed, that our plane was unsafe. The airport officials lied to our planes crew that everything was going to be fine instead of just taking us to a hotel which they only did at 10 that night. After finding out we could not fly, our planes captain began screaming at the Koreans that they lied to them and us. It was quite frightening, we didn't know what was going on. It seems as a people they are willing to lie to tell you what you want to know and no one takes real responsibility out of fear of "authority" and the authorities are corrupt. What ever has happened to them and many Asian people it doesn't serve them well. They are not believed now and their own people do not trust them at all.
I heard a story of a mother waking up in the middle of the night because she felt a presence... When she looked her child was standing at the foot of the bed soaking wet and crying... She then said to her child, You are dead aren't you ? The child nodded yes and disappeared...
@MaddieB When a ship capsized, it'll trap air pockets within its compartments. These can allow for survivors within these pockets for up to 72 hours, after which their oxygen would run out.
Whether they obeyed or not, without further help from the coast guard they weren't going to make it. Jumping out into the waters and swimming for it is not a better solution. They needed to receive assistance no matter what.

@ the boats follow the command of the coast guard and would take people based on protocol. There's a lot of coordination that would go into a safe evacuation. The insinuation seems to be that "if only they were spunky rulebreaking spirits and made mad rushes for the boats they'd be saved."

This is why people got so angry, it's not "just" an incident but gross neglience shown by authorities, those children didnt need to die.

I understand. I had strict parents and they were education obsessed but as I turned into an adult I was able to rebel. That is possible in western society but not in korea. I am still scarred but your comment is wellfounded. A society built on obedience isn't emotionally mature in my opinion. It doesnt mean you have to be disruptive or rude or extreme...but rebelliousness can come out that way. It is better if the parents and elders can be more emotionally mature as well and recognise that their children can be well functioning adults without excessive control. 👏
they still search for the truth. everything they suspect to be the reason for this tragedy IS the truth. there was not one factor. and they have every reason to distrust and downright despise the Coast Guard. they were literally just riding circles around the ship, approaching it only when they saw someone trying to abandon it. no real attempt to go a bit deeper to check for survivors, no orders towards that failure of a human being and a captain that fled the ship almost immediately. take the Concordia incident, for example, where the captain also fled. only to have the commander of the Coast Guard yell at him so loud through the phone to "get back on board, f*** sake! That's an ORDER!" that when I heard it, subconsciously i felt a pull towards the nearest ship to get on it. the Coast Guard, if called, ASSUMES TOTAL CONTROL. this coast guard did nothing. For all those parents that lost their children, time stopped. they cannot move on. my deepest condolences to each of them.
Sad that the officers and captain panicked and didn't tried to safe the people on board. If only there would be a more competent capitan those people would have survive, maybe even all of them. C'mon you do not need to be a navy admiral to know that staying in the ship while it's sinking is really dangerous, you always need to go as high as you can or just jump to water, you won't die by staying even 20 minutes in cold sea water but if you will get trapped inside it's all over. Cost guard and some fisherman won't be able to save you... We can only hope that shit like that won't happen again. Just imagine losing 250 kids... It was a whole slew of greed, negligence and incompetence that caused the Sewol to capsize. After it capsized it was corruption, self preservation, government/coastguard lies and incompetence that led to the deaths of those who remained onboard. RIP to the people who tragically lost their lives that sad spring day.
Critical thinking is SO IMPORTANT. I didn't know just how important until I was a teacher in a foreign country and realized it was missing from the curriculum. My heart aches for these high schoolers and their families 💔

I became a Registered Nurse (RN) after I was hit by a 3/4-ton GMC pickup truck and thrown about 25-30 feet into the air before landing in a mud puddle as a junior in high school. The kindness and compassion led me to begin an 18-year career as a RN until my back gave out and I became disabled about 10 years ago. It's a tough career especially now but I have met so many incredibly wonderful people during my time as a nurse.

What was worse, the US had a carrier nearby with boats in the water and soldiers ready to assist in the rescue. Korean officials denied their requests to join in the rescue out of fear they'd be perceived as weak by asking for foreign assistance.
Days later, the Korean officials finally allowed foreign professional divers to come in, but they left as it was clear the Korean officials were trying to use them for PR, making them feel unsafe when coast guard officials wouldn't stop messing with their gear for pictures and video.
it's interesting that they called out the passive and obedience they teach the children. and I agree that a change should be made. following instructions is important, but following your instincts especially in a life of death situation is even more important.
above all, the captain should've instructed everyone to get up on the top deck so they can get ready to jump off the gradually subsiding boat. they all had lifejackets on, which is about the only right thing that happened. listening to that instruction would've been enough. but no, the captain was the first to flee himself onto a lifeboat when he could've just given this simple instruction.

When something is wrong on a sea vessel, never stay below deck until you know exactly what is going on. You feel a degree of listing, get a lifejacket on and get moving.
Even with cultural differences, it's extremely difficult to understand how a crew and captain can leave a sinking ship, without first looking after the safety of passengers. Would think that is a responsibility you've excepted and may face some day, working on and managing ship. The students staying in their cabins is at least explainable - they've been taught to respect and follow adults. The crew leaving was pure cowardice. To anyone (Korean) with more insight.. why do you think the crew left?

I’m a Korean living in the United States currently and this incident and the extreme mis-leadership shown by the captain of the ship has nothing to do with cultural difference. Anyone with common sense know this was cruel and clearly evil. This was not and will NEVER be accepted to us Koreans.

The cause is well known, over loaded cargo, no ballast water, the second in command made a 25degree turn which made the cargo move and the centre of gravity shifted, the ship then listed at 20degrees... Water came in and the list got worse until the ship capsized.
Not to mention the complete lack of crew safety training and the disregard for shiploading regulations.

I was teaching English at a Korean middle school when this happened. It left me feeling like the school might suddenly lose most of an entire grade, the students and their homeroom teachers. If the halls were empty I felt as if my students had vanished and I wanted to be reassured that they were still there. I can't even imagine what it was like for the survivors at the Danwon High School.
This comment brought tears to my eyes. I can totally understand the emotional pain and sheer heart break from just the thought, no less the possibility that all those young dreams could be stolen from under your wing. Truly gut wrenching!!! Thank you for all you do. Everyone dies, but not everyone lives...

They believed that the captain has studied for this and knew best, so they would've listened to him not knowing he was already off the ferry. Besides that, even the coast guard took way too long to answer and the government refused help from Japan and U.S. naval services, who were nearby. Don't blame the victims.
That is truly the problem with most Asian societies.. I am from an Asian country myself, but at least where I am, people's ability to distinguish between right and wrong remains to be a stronger factor for decision-making than blind obedience to authority.
@@FishoeShoe_da_great I’m not sure that they were blaming the victims, but instead highlighting how conformity, discouraging independence and perhaps self-preservation can lead to and/or make a dangerous/deadly situation even worse. Regardless, those children should never have died. Had one competent person (meaning, with proper training in seamanship) stepped up to coordinate an evacuation, those children may have lived. Certainly more would have lived if a timely, coordinated rescue had occurred. What happened is and was absolutely inexcusable and it always confused me as to why there was no foreign presence assisting in the recovery. If you remember the civilian divers talk about how decrepit and really unserviceable the diving equipment of the Korean government divers was, one can’t help but think why there was no international presence. There are many countries who routinely reach out and offer help in the minutes and hours during and after a disaster. To find out that help was refused, especially after such an inept and almost nonexistent rescue and flawed recovery, is unfathomable and unforgivable. This is especially true now knowing that the government was aware that the Sewol’s design made the possibility of survivors finding air pockets after it capsized unlikely or impossible. It’s all simply heartbreaking.

This wasn't the first time and certainly won't be the last I heard the story "Don't panic everything is fine, everyone stay in your cabins" and everyone dies because of that. The response of the captain (telling the passengers to not move and to stay still) and the coastal guards in their rescue efforts (or the lack thereof) is so very bizarre. The ship took 2 hours to submerge fully. All those 304 passengers and crew could have been easily saved as most were wearing safety jackets and there were American and Japanese ships nearby ready to help with the rescue. .

My child could have been among them victims... I can feel the trauma of this horrific incredible event. Notice the timing similar to the Titanic, a hundred years before.
Why in the world were the students told to stay in their cabins and be sent to a certain cold undersea grave? A large portion could have saved themselves if they had only headed for the top as the ship listed. There were plenty of fishing boats around to pick up the survivors.
The crew weren’t trained in evacuation procedures or even how to use the ballast tanks which might have corrected the problem before it happened. There were also multiple problems with various pieces of vital equipment including the tannoy and internal radios.
Add in illegal/suspect alterations and poor maintenance, overloading of the ship with both people and cargo, plus bad planning of the route (there was an alternate route which would have meant not going through strong currents and bad weather, but was rejected because it added a whopping 8 miles to the already long route.
The thing is the coast guard and rescue team tried to prevent fishing boats from getting near the boat. They even refused the U.S. and Japan's help. Plus the kids didn't realize the boat was sinking until water came in and the boat was tilting.
I can't believe how they just rejected the help from Japan coasts and american naval ships or even the locals there that are willing

The people who comment about how awful it was that the adults would leave children to die because of public image etc, reminds me of reports I've encountered where school girls in muslim countries are left to die in burning buildings because the firefighters are not allowed to see non-family females who aren't fully dressed, etc. Such nonsense.

The Sewol Ferry disaster is an absolute disgrace for the South Korean Government, the South Korean Coast Guard and the Owners and Operators of the Sewol Ferry! To all the Family's who lost their Children and Loved ones in the Sewol Ferry Disaster, as my heart breaks for every one of you that has been touched by this Tragedy, but for all the families who have lost loved ones onboard the Sewol Ferry their heartbreak is being made even worse by the constant hiding of the Truth by all the parties involve with the Sewol Ferry, the South Koren Coast Guard and the South Korean Government! To be honest i think the Judge who oversaw the Investigation into the sinking of the Sewol should of jailed all the crew of the Sewol and the crew of the Cost Guard Vessel that didn't board the Sewol Ferry to make sure that ever passenger had been evacuated before backing away while the Sewol Ferry sunk, as some alone time in jail may of given all these individuals the time to remember what actually occurred during the Sinking of the Sewol Ferry! I would also like to know how the Sewol kept operating without any type of real Maritime Safety Accreditation, and were instead operating with forged paperwork? There needs to be a Governmental Website for each county where passengers are able to check the accreditation of the Safety of the Vessel and people Crewing the Vessels, so passengers can travel with some sort of peace of mind that the Ship they are traveling on has had a fairly recent safety inspection, and the Crew have also been accredited for Emergency Procedures for the Vessel they are on! As If the South Korean Government hasn't made sure that every vessel operating in their waters has current proper Accredited Maritime Safety Paperwork to be operating in South Korean waters then the current Government also needs to step down as well, as if the Government isn't making sure these shady companies are operating accredited Ships in their own Waters then the next Sewol Tragedy is just a matter of when not if it is going to happen! I really prey that all of the High School Students and their Teachers are Resting in Peace! But unfortunately i don't think this will happen until the full truth is revealed behind the Sewol Ferry sinking and all the parties responsible for the deaths of all these High School Students and their Teachers are finally brought to justice!

When the captain was asked if he was being ordered to set up a plan for saving the passengers he'd replied he didn't remember anything. Bro, that's impossible to believe. Students were ordered to stay put while waiting but what happened you left the ship first leaving hundreds of more passengers inside struggling to wait and most of them are students but it only made worse. More lives could have been saved if the captain decided to let everyone jump out of the ship and wait for rescue cause they have life vests. Deepest condolences to the families of victims.

You will never be able to accept that your child has been taken taken from you prematurely. How could a parent ever accept that??? A parent should never outlive their own children. You live. You carry on. You do what you have to, especially if you have other children you must raise.
I have seen other coverage of this tragedy which stated that the ship was abruptly turned onto a different heading, and the suddenness of the sharp turn and the weight of the additional accommodations fitted high up on the superstructure and never signed off by a marine architect, combined with the heavily overloaded state of the ship to initiate an unrecoverable list.
That and the fact that the captian was continually draining the water held at the bottom of the ship, that's used to help correct a tilting boat, because he wanted the boat to be lighter so he cod overfill it more with passengers.
Plus the fact that cargo wasn't properly secure inside. Once ship start tilting, all went on the side make the things impossible to stop.
Saw video from dash cam of one of the cars from inside of farry... It was like parking full of cars at once moved to one side instantly causing damage and split second after water started getting inside.
Imagine hoping till the end that someone will save you but…

Yes, all passengers should be led to upper levels and common large areas, with easy access to and from the outside. NEVER OMG NEVER sent back to their cabins, hidden away from rescue in a maze of tight corridors, small doors, and loose objects. That was murder.

My family and I heard about it on the news, and It just felt like a story at the time, and I didn't realise how bad it was at the time. After, my family lit candles even though we lived in London, and wrote '박근혜는 물럿가라', which means 'Park Gyuen Hae, get out/ step down'. My mother told me that respect for myself comes first over respect for elders. I don't want to ask you to remember them every day, but just on one day, I ask you to think of them.

Because I am from Syria, my country was at that time in complete chaos and still, then I left my country in search of safety, I did not know about this incident until today, and I cried a lot for what happened, I really feel sorry and sorrow 😔 for these students and their families, a strange feeling I feel, I will not be able to sleep easily after knowing the story, justice is to put all those responsible for a ship and sink it in the same place where the ferry sank after locking the doors on them so that they can feel what the children felt

I came here after watching the deep analysis for "Spring Day" BTS song which was tributed to the victims of Sewol Ferry tragedy. I had no idea about this disaster due to hating watching the news. It is so heartbreaking, it made me cry. The biggest fear of every parent is losing a child. I can`t imagine the hell those poor kids have gone through while waiting for help from the outer world and the parents who were begging to save their kids. I can`t stop crying, it hurts soo much. Definitely one of the roughest tragic moments in recent memory. The ship itself is actually still sitting there in the thumbnail even five years after it was raised and placed. It’s still pretty much in same condition, think only small pieces towards the stern have been removed.
once the ship was on its side- everyone deep inside the ship were doomed. you cant access stairways and doors because the entire thing is almost upside down.
also i think a lot of them drowned wearing life jackets inside a submerged ship.

That's a FIRST I heard "the boat was overloaded" makes sense to why this boat was sinking by the next day at breakfast as the survivor said in another vid. This is so sad an traumatizing.

The exact cause is irresponsible humans. They changed the stability of the ferry and then still didn't even try to be careful. The crew turned too sharp making the ferry lean too far and take on water. It was a tragedy as soon as the ship left port.
The current president promised answers but instead pardoned Park after she was imprisoned.
After all the examinations of the crews "logic" in ordering the passengers to remain in their cabins, the question that remains, is for each person in the "chain of command" maybe one that has left many of them without an answer, "why didn't I listen to my heart and ignore the command to order them to stay in their cabins ?"

We had plane trouble on a flight home from India years ago. We were not permitted to fly out of Seoul and held in the airport all day when the authorities knew we needed to be housed, that our plane was unsafe. The airport officials lied to our planes crew that everything was going to be fine instead of just taking us to a hotel which they only did at 10 that night. After finding out we could not fly, our planes captain began screaming at the Koreans that they lied to them and us. It was quite frightening, we didn't know what was going on. It seems as a people they are willing to lie to tell you what you want to know and no one takes real responsibility out of fear of "authority" and the authorities are corrupt. What ever has happened to them and many Asian people it doesn't serve them well. They are not believed now and their own people do not trust them at all.
I heard a story of a mother waking up in the middle of the night because she felt a presence... When she looked her child was standing at the foot of the bed soaking wet and crying... She then said to her child, You are dead aren't you ? The child nodded yes and disappeared...

@MaddieB When a ship capsized, it'll trap air pockets within its compartments. These can allow for survivors within these pockets for up to 72 hours, after which their oxygen would run out.

@ the boats follow the command of the coast guard and would take people based on protocol. There's a lot of coordination that would go into a safe evacuation. The insinuation seems to be that "if only they were spunky rulebreaking spirits and made mad rushes for the boats they'd be saved."

I understand. I had strict parents and they were education obsessed but as I turned into an adult I was able to rebel. That is possible in western society but not in korea. I am still scarred but your comment is wellfounded. A society built on obedience isn't emotionally mature in my opinion. It doesnt mean you have to be disruptive or rude or extreme...but rebelliousness can come out that way. It is better if the parents and elders can be more emotionally mature as well and recognise that their children can be well functioning adults without excessive control. 👏

they still search for the truth. everything they suspect to be the reason for this tragedy IS the truth. there was not one factor. and they have every reason to distrust and downright despise the Coast Guard. they were literally just riding circles around the ship, approaching it only when they saw someone trying to abandon it. no real attempt to go a bit deeper to check for survivors, no orders towards that failure of a human being and a captain that fled the ship almost immediately. take the Concordia incident, for example, where the captain also fled. only to have the commander of the Coast Guard yell at him so loud through the phone to "get back on board, f*** sake! That's an ORDER!" that when I heard it, subconsciously i felt a pull towards the nearest ship to get on it. the Coast Guard, if called, ASSUMES TOTAL CONTROL. this coast guard did nothing. For all those parents that lost their children, time stopped. they cannot move on. my deepest condolences to each of them.
The entire culture of being passive and follow authority crumbles when authority is highly corrupted.
as a sailor, this tragedy is one of few that really haunts me. how a crew and most of all a COMMANDER did what they did still leaves me speechless

The one of the divers saw as he navigate the maze inside the ship that bodies was floating was so traumatic to him he committed suicide.

Sad that the officers and captain panicked and didn't tried to safe the people on board. If only there would be a more competent capitan those people would have survive, maybe even all of them. C'mon you do not need to be a navy admiral to know that staying in the ship while it's sinking is really dangerous, you always need to go as high as you can or just jump to water, you won't die by staying even 20 minutes in cold sea water but if you will get trapped inside it's all over. Cost guard and some fisherman won't be able to save you... We can only hope that shit like that won't happen again. Just imagine losing 250 kids... Horrible, feel so sorry for them, their family and friends even i didn't know them

The fact that most of them who lost their lives really stay put as they were told to do so just gives my chest a very tight sad feeling... coming 10 years soon.
It was a whole slew of greed, negligence and incompetence that caused the Sewol to capsize. After it capsized it was corruption, self preservation, government/coastguard lies and incompetence that led to the deaths of those who remained onboard. RIP to the people who tragically lost their lives that sad spring day.
Critical thinking is SO IMPORTANT. I didn't know just how important until I was a teacher in a foreign country and realized it was missing from the curriculum. My heart aches for these high schoolers and their families 💔
If the captain wanted to abandon ship fine. But to tell people to stay put and then flee, leaving them on a sinking ship? Absolutely ridiculous.
I can't imagine how the families and parents can deal with this. This has got to be the worst nightmare come true for any parent. I could not imagine life without my children they are what gives me my purpose
