“Now that I’m grown I eat five dozen eggs” woah, woah, woah! Hold up there, Gaston. FIVE DOZEN eggs?! Now I don’t know about you, Loyal Theorists, but that seems a bit excessive. Not only do I think Gaston CAN’T eat all those eggs, but I also wonder what his consumption is doing to the local town in Beauty and the Beast, especially with the current egg crisis. To find the answers, you’ll just have to watch.

Here's a consideration: I'm not convinced Gaston knows how many eggs are in a dozen.
Nice theory - LeFou is illiterate, and Gaston doesn't understand basic maths. A himbo match made in heaven
That's the real theory.
he's all brawn but no brain
4/3 people do suffer from math illiteracy. 😂
ha
I had this thought years ago. The line "I need 6 eggs. That's too expensive." always makes me think it's because Gaston eats most of them so there's only a small amount left.
@lShowSрееd shorts 🅥 I keep forgetting why I hate leaving comments on popular RUclips channels.
@@Version0111 dude got absolutly demolished by bots
@@Version0111
FR it's such a problem now.
I keep spamming report and it does nothing :")
The thing is though, the "that's too expensive line" is not said about the eggs but rather a jug.
In the live musical production, the lines "I need six eggs" and "thats too expensive" are sung right after the other. Some directors give the baker's wife the first line with the baker replying. Its a perfect fit for this theory.
I said the same thing and didn't see your comment 😂
It's said in the background of the animated version as well!
Funny part is the musical at least the one I was a part of removed the egg line in gaston
The only reason I remember those lines specifically is because I was supposed to be the shopkeeper. I was still in the scene though and they practiced that specific bit multiple times
Same thing happened in the live action version. Surprised Mat didn't mention that.
Remember, this man calculated the time and place where the movie took place, the chickens that laid the eggs and even used the Laws of Supply and Demand just to figure out if One Man ate an entire Village's Egg Supply.
And then forgot that eggs are not a key ingredient in bread
He even looked at old English architecture, this guy should win an Emmy award
Seems normal to me.
@@Kat-mv5dysometimes they are. Especially in really good bread recipes, and considering that to the French, bread is like MONDO sacred, it wouldn’t surprise me if this recipe used eggs.
Well, Belle’s dad is a crazy inventor. He could have artificial lighting and feed. It would explain why Gaston is so set on marrying Belle; he’s gotta secure those eggs
That's also a good theory too
@@avidreader4140 BUT HEY THATS JUST A THEORY A GOOD THEORY
If you put eggs in lime water they will keep for about two years, give or take. This was a practice commonly known before refrigerators. Gaston would have had no problem preserving his eggs.

Honestly, Matpat makes it sound like 200 is a lot of chickens to have one hand, but my Great Depression Grandmother raised up to 300 chickens each year to sell for meat to a local inn and used the eggs they laid beforehand to sell and feed her 12 children. A little entrepreneurial for the time, but it has been done.
I know someone that raised a dozen or so chickens in his free time back in middle school. He sold them by the dozen on weekends, but I don't have exact numbers. He wasn't a farmer, nobody in the family was. Chickens were just abundant i n the area, you'd see hordes of them on street corners in town.
That's awesome that she was able to do that!
While that does make sense, Mat did the calculations in terms of Gaston's needs, not the villages, all the chickens in town are working for him, unless he has that many chickens of his own, he's the only one that gets the eggs
Hey Matt Pat, quick note. I live in Washington state and raise backyard chickens. Roughly the same latitude as France so roughly the same daylight hours. Between October and January my chickens don’t lay eggs at all. so there’s even less eggs for bargification
“Bargification” that’s great
I like how MatPat doesn't just assume the villain was eggs-agerating.
Have you come to expect anything else from MatPat?
@@VistilShaiteth eggspect?
Simply take the word “dozen” out. 5 eggs is much more reasonable.
@@HindsightWildin or he misunderstood dos and thought a dozen equals 2. Lol. And since a typical restaurant egg order has 2 eggs, he's bragging he ate 5 orders of eggs. 😂
Imagine there was a traveler in the tavern when he was a kid, he overheard and instead of hearing 'dos huevos' he heard "dozen eggos" and he's been bragging about eating pairs of eggs ever since. 🤣🤣🤣
Too much of an egghead to back down from a challenge 😂
Gaston didn’t think Belle was being held hostage when Maurice first came to beg for help saving her. He only went after the Beast AFTER Belle had already been freed & showed more interest in the Beast than in Gaston.
Oh yeah, I forget that detail in the movie
Thank you!! This is what I was thinking
Also he wasn't betrothed to Belle she pretty clearly turned him down many times
@@caradanellemcclintock8178 Yep, only betrothed in his mind.
THANK YOU!
Something to take into consideration: If a hen is frightened, egg production halts for days.
On several occasions, we had to deal with predators getting into the Chicken enclosure at night.
Now fortunately, our hens were kept in a building at night, that locked from the outside, so only occasionally did we lose one. Still, the predators got into the fenced area they roamed during the day.
After firing some shotgun blasts to take care of the problem, hens stopped laying eggs for almost 7 full days.
So the opposite of what happens in cartoons
5:55
From someone who speaks French, French people would've definetly understood you
Very good pronounciation MatPat :)
"When I was a lad, I ate four dozen eggs every morning to help me get large. And now that I'm grown, I eat five dozen eggs. So I'm roughly the size of a barge. "
I like to imagine that Gaston was just going around early in the morning, pillaging eggs from everyone in town as he slowly grown into a bigger kid and then adult. Gaston going around chicken pens, just swallowing eggs and dipping. Eventually, he just became such a barge that he uses his strength to become the greatest giga-chad in the village.
And because he's such a barge, nobody wants to challenge him due to his intimidating strength.
In the song, LeFou says "no one's slick as Gaston, no one's quick as Gaston" implying that Gaston is so fast at consuming the eggs so then nobody is able to capture him early on which made him become big and strong in the end.
nah... he was just lieing about it to make himself look good - it is literally spelled out in the song.
Actually, Gaston said he ate eggs but he didn't say that they were chicken eggs. Dude could have been eating quail eggs for all we know
😂😂😂
Have you seen a quail egg?! 😂
Technically he didn't specify bird eggs either, he could be eating fish eggs or even, uh, invertebrate eggs
Maybe human eggs, from all the ovaries Chadston is ripping open
The man was juggling eggs while singing the song lol
Now what we really need answers to: How did Gaston eat all those raw eggs WITH THE SHELLS ON?
He has strong teeth from all the calcium in those eggshells, which he's only able to eat because of his strong teeth. It's a real "chicken or egg" situation
My man swallowed em whole tho
MatPat and team theorist answering questions we didn't know we wanted to ask for over a decade
"The I need 6 eggs" "That's too expensive" has never aged so well.
Yeah, if memory serves me at the time the movie came out it was perfectly reasonable to get a dozen for 89 cents, or maybe less. Of course just your basic inflation has a bit to do with the rise, but $5 a dozen is insanity, and lately I've seen it at higher than that at times. Thankfully RUclips has some great videos about alternatives that you can try out.
Considering there was a French revolution 50 years later I hope there wouldn't be a 50 year wait for fair wages and better working conditions.
I know. Now I appreciate my six chickens even more. Chicken food is more expensive now too though. We used to have 13 chickens, but 7 died last year, mainly the red ones. I hope we can get a few more this year. Chickens are silly, but I like them a lot.
Actually, the that’s too expensive was said by a man holding a vase, not the woman buying the eggs
@@shaneg9081 Where I live it's nearly $8 a dozen. Thankfully I only go through a dozen in a week, rather than five dozen in a day.
I've always thought Gaston didn’t know what a dozen means and thought it was how they were prepared.
This makes much more sense. XD
I mean, it's already implied that Gaston, although the biggest hammer in the shed, isn't the sharpest tool. I could easily see him doing exactly that.
Even MatPat shows the eggs in cartons of 10 each instead of 12 (a dozen).
@Dis Dis bot alert
@@AnnoyingMoose After we go through this expensive egg thing, they will probably make the packages smaller like they are doing for everything else. (At our local store, I saw boxes of those conversation hearts and the package was half the size they used to be.)
I live in a small town, everyone's solution to the egg price rise is that they have nearly completely stopped buying from the store and are just buying chickens, but I wonder if that would truly be cheaper in the long run .
You can still sell the left over eggs if you get too many, that way you can parcially cover the costs of feeding.
if you go at 0.25 speed at 12:47 you can see skulls in gaston's eyes, and matpat didnt add those in, that was in the movie
Someone once said that "Gaston singlehandedly drove up the egg price and caused an economic egg crisis"
And it's beautiful
Missed opportunity for calling it an "eggonomic crisis".
@@Cerebrum123 that is a missed opportunity!

Gaston: ensuring the town will soon rely on egg imports.
Fun fact in the french version of Gaston's song, he actually says "when I was little I ate 4 dozen eggs (...) Now that I am big I eat 49" so yeah it starts just like you but the french version in so much funnier when you realize that he just added the grand total of 1 egg to his diet
Another fun fact, in the Finnish version Gaston sings he "ate eggs by tons" while growing up, and that "now, since the task is done, he can't get any stronger".

To be fair, growing boys need lots of food to grow. Now that he’s grown, he doesn’t need a whole lot more, lol

I’m surprised you didn’t mention the eggshells, chicken poop, or cost of feeding and housing the chickens. In addition, Gaston clearly comes from wealth to have grown up eating so much, rich from inheritance but not royalty or well-educated and willing to marry a peasant. I wonder whether he owns that bar.
Now for the question, does Gaston eat so many eggs because he's respected enough to get away with it or is he respected because he's able to afford so many eggs? Which came first, the hunter or the eggs?
The thing MatPat failed to address is HOW Gaston is able to afford that many eggs. I was hoping for that, given all the other economic points he covered. This is supposedly a small village, how is a hunter able to sell enough game to pay for all those eggs?
@@jamesuthmann940 To be fair, it was common to hunters to sell outside the village. If a hunter can find a good trapping area, he could made a quick buck.

I remember being like twelve and sending an email to matpat to cover this topic. Many years later I have finally received vindication
TWElve?? How many years has it been?

Me too! I sent Matpat a tweet like 4 years ago asking about this
Lmao, how'd you even find his email?
I like to think that he saw this email and was like "Hmmm We should do a FOOD THEORY CHANNEL!" and then put a pin in it on the creative board and now, years later when the channel is properly up and running, here it is! :)
We never needed proof that Matt Pat was a father, but this episode is all the proof anyone will ever need, the amount of Dad Jokes, and Egg puns is truly remarkable, all within the first 4 minutes too.
As someone who grew up with an egg allergy (and who accidentally re-triggered that allergy by having a few too many eggs in a week) Gaston’s diet is my worst nightmare
One thing he didn't mention is that eggs were also significantly smaller back then! There are cake recipes from the 1700s that call for 24 eggs!
24.
tumblr’s vanilla extract cake could never
Haha
Yea, whilst we bred chickens to create eggs faster we also bred them to create larger eggs; now-a-days many chicken breeds can produce an egg each day roughly (when we cared for chickens at my school we always checked daily for eggs on top of making sure they had enough food and water), it can actually lead to calcium deficiency problems in chickens from producing so many eggs so farmers often to have to make sure their feed contains decent amounts of calcium in it so they can produce eggs (calcium deficiency means no eggs because egg's shells are made of calcium)
That's roughly 24 ostrich eggs.
You forgot a MASSIVE point, there's an ENTIRE castle with its staff that effectively up and vanished no longer requiring food. Right around the time Gaston would have started his consumption, so he likely SAVED the town from dealing with a shock & drop in demand.
The castle has its own livestock, Matpat even mentioned this in his last beauty and the beast video.
Abd gaston provided meat and leather to the peasants by hunting since previously, the castle's lord would have had exclusive hunting rights over most animals most of the year.
y’know, i wouldn’t be shocked if this was intentional. the lyricists needed some extra words to fill out the beginning song, and they’d already written that line about gaston having 5 dozen eggs for breakfast, and one of the writers thought about it and was like “…heh”
u could even say it was… *an easter egg*
I actually appreciate this video so much, I’ve always wondered why 6 eggs were so expensive.

I feel that what made Gaston a villain from the get-go was the fact that he doesn't think of Bell as a person he just thinks of her as a trophy with the live action version going as far as to have him try and threaten her into marrying him.
*Biff Tannen has entered the Chat*
@@shlatekkin Bahahaha
The difference between Gaston and the Beast is the Beast was a good person deep down and wanted to change, and Belle saw that. If she had married Gaston, she would've been held hostage too, but unlike the Beast he didn't truly love her and didn't think he needed to change.
@@AluminumFusion22 yeah it's not just his views on women but the fact the was desperate, idiotic and not a good person from inside marrying him would be to willfully get married with an abuser.
It's been a very popular theory, that had Gaston starred at any other Disney film, he would've been a hero.
2:20 the one thing I always found funny about the song was how growing up he only increased his egg intake by a dozen. Well it’s still a lot of eggs the idea that his appetite changed so little between childhood and adulthood I always found entertaining.
8:27 I can assure you, *I asked.* I'm currently in a production of Beauty and the Beast (the musical) as Maurice, and having heard that lyric over and over during rehearsals, I've bought this idea into question. I was really excited seeing this video!! Also, in the musical, it's the "Aristocratic Lady" who says "that's too expensive!" in Belle for SIX EGGS. An aristocrat can't afford six eggs. That's how you know it's gotten bad 😂

I kinda wish he covered how eating that many eggs would affect Gaston long term. Eating that many eggs for a food competition one time is one thing, eating that many every day for years is another.
The amount of effort that goes into a video answering a question that nobody had in the first place is astonishing, but what is even more surprising is how entertaining it is, how much it makes sense, and the fact that the question has an answer in the first place.
Even though I knew exactly what this theory entailed, I was still excited to see it covered. It's one that's been floating around the fandom for ages now, and it's really satisfying to see someone dig into the how and why of it.

Love this episode! Hilarious that we went through literally every other geographical aspect of the movie before settling on the fact that Gaston does, in fact, eat a lot of eggs. But quick question, we saw in the live-action that Gaston is a war hero who just returned, and I don't recall ever hearing that Gaston grew up in the little town where Belle lives...
Also, Gaston's entrance in the movie is him "returning" to the village after spending time away.
Wouldn't it be more probable to attribute the economic failure (and possibly the lack of population) to the plague mentioned in the live-action (People dying; less labor to meet demand) instead of Gaston's stomach?

Gotta hand it to MatPat for making a solid theory with supporting evidence (even if some of that evidence had to come from the remake)!
Applaud for Matpat for putting the sponsored segment at the end of his video. And includes cool stats about how many videos he films a week
The problem with this theory is that Gaston has been eating that many eggs for years so the towns supply would have adjusted for the extra eggs. The real problem would be when he died and all of a sudden there is a surplus of eggs crashing the market.
The supply wouldn't be so easy to increase, and the increase certainly wouldn't be without cost. Eggs are not like pearls, where taking them all has no negative effect on the producer, eggs are the way that chickens reproduce. So if all the eggs are constantly in extremely high demand, then there isn't likely going to be any room in production to increase the number of chickens. More chickens also means more feed is needed, and while chickens can get by on kitchen scraps and insects, that alone is only enough to support about 1 chicken for every 2 people.
They could try buying from a neighboring town, but excess chickens are normally eaten rather than sold except when they're sold to be eaten, in which case they're normally no longer able to lay eggs and are only sold alive because preserving meat is expensive.
Gaston ignored Belle when she explained that he was friendly and he did so intentionally when not five minutes ago he tried to blackmail her by having her father committed
A few questions:
1.)How much money was he spending
2.)How much money would the eggs be back then
3.)Does he work a job to get said money
“When I was young I ate 4 dozen eggs..”
Woah,Gaston, we NEED to talk about the lack of pancakes in your breakfast diet!😂
I always thought Gaston was responsible for the price of eggs going up
I think you overlooked that the town would've because accustomed to gastons egg consumption when he was a child eating 4 dozen. By the time he's an adult and increases his consumption to five, any economic influence would've worn off only effecting things a little as they increase the heard to account for that slight further increase in demand
Nice video Matt! One idea for a video you could try that I thought of recently: do meatless mondays actually help to reduce greenhouse gasses? I feel like it wouldn’t make that big of a difference, but maybe I’m wrong.
“Egg Inflation” is not a phrase I was expecting to see in a movie where a random woman who’s trying to read gets kidnapped by a prince that was transformed into a monster by a goddess because he judged her mortal form’s appearance.
The "That's too expensive " line actually comes directly after the "I need 6 eggs" line.

Thank you for doing such in depth research into chickens, egg production, and historical accuracy, this is a fantastic video!!
Finally! Gaston's egg-cessive diet has been brought to attention.
Also he's absolutely loaded.
I don't think Gaston is loaded. His bread and butter is that he was in some war and is now the town's hero. He is using the clout to get either reduced prices to his lifestyle or get handouts. He is the strong guy and has charisma and the town doesn't look at him for why they have economic issues.
I’ve been saying it for years. If Gaston lived past the events of beauty and the beast then he wouldn’t live past the revolution. When everyone is starving the guy eating all the eggs seems the perfect scape goat.

Small detail- the official age of Belle is 16 years. Besides that great video. You guys put so much effort in these videos.
I met my husband when he wrote a reddit theory that Gaston was the hero of Beauty and the Beast and yes, the eggs were crucial to the theory
Here in Canada I had no idea that there was a big egg shortage and price spike. We have a tightly controlled market on eggs which apparently has shielded us mostly from this. This video sent me on an interesting news hunt.
I didn't realise either I live in South Africa and the eggs price have only gone up a tiny bit but all the groceries went up due to petrol shortages and COVID stuff so I assumed it was just that been eating eggs almost every day still
I'm not sure how other countries dealt with avian flu in 2022, but in the US over 58 million birds were culled or died.
This "controls that shield you" can make the problem worse.
An example is California's water. It has subsidies to make water cheap and affordable. Nice, yes? But some towns turn in the taps certain times if the year and get zero water at all. This is because nobody rations the water the way they should, so suddenly entire neighborhoods wake up to zero water.
The same market dynamic could potentially happen to eggs. The low price doesn't fix the supply issue. It just helps the consumer temporarily.
@@buckaroobonzai2909 The controls don't make our eggs cheaper, they actually make them more expensive in general. Canada has a lot of rules for importing eggs and dairy, meaning most of the eggs and dairy we use is local. In general we don't have access to US or EU dairy and egg products, which keeps our products costing more. But in this specific case, it has meant we don't rely on the global supply chains for eggs that have run into major issues, so our prices have not really gone up.
