Laura Joplin was a professor of literature of mine, when I was an exchange student at the Prescott Center of Alternative Education. She never even discussed the fame of her sister, Janis, though we all knew about it, They were very down to earth people.

I was a 60's child. Weird times, but EXCITING if you were a young person. I saw Janis in concert at the Fillmore in 1969. I'll never forget it. THAT was the best concert I've EVER been to, and I'm 72 yrs old! I shed a tear whenever I think of her. She closed the door on the 60's for me. God bless us all!
I will never forget seeing Janis twice in 1969. I've seen a lot of performances and she was the best! I'm still in love with her, still cry when I hear Me and Bobby McGee.

I got to see Janis Joplin and the Full Tilt Boogie Band on a Sunday afternoon in Kansas City at Memorial Hall , a friend talked his Mom into taking us, we were 12 or 13 , and had a blast , Sea Train opened the show, I was very lucky to have seen her

If there was one person that I would love to party with or just hang out with would be Janis Joplin I love everything about her she was a beautiful woman beautiful soul and one hell of a reble. She should have been added to the rock and roll hall of fame way before 1995. My God bless her soul forever. Janis was even on a postage stamp, she overcame so much trauma from her teen yrs. and time in college--I lived in Orange, TX 56-66 as child, not a nice place, went to Port Arthur many times--same deal--I can still relate to the pain of her time there and I'm 64, so glad my family got out

What I love about Janis is that she soared way above all who shunned her. She did it because it's who she was and she went for what she wanted. She didn't get famous to throw it in their faces. Sure wish she was still here.

I've loved Janis and her music since I was 13, 46 years ago.
My little band opened at the Grande Ballroom in Detroit for the MC5 and Big Brother and the Holding Company when Janis was the vocalist. She sang between tugs on a bottle of Jack Daniels, amazed everyone in the place, knocked us out. Everyone fell in love. She left it all on the stage, didn't let up till her show was over. Was amazing she had enough energy to carry herself off the stage after what she gave.
Southern Comfort was her favorite drink of choice when I was lucky enough to see her!

yeah her family never seemed sympathetic regarding her career. but she wasn't a blues legend to them, she was their daughter and sister, and they had to watch her destroy herself in the process of becoming a blues legend.
@broskijohansson Janis’ family did not watch her destroy herself. During her final visit to Port Arthur, Texas, the guys who accompanied her to her parents’ house drank until they passed out. Janis drank in her parents’ house but not nearly as much as the guys. You can find this information in Myra Friedman’s book Buried Alive. Peace.

Janis couldn't possibly have said that because it makes absolutely no sense. No one who grew up in Port Arthur, as Janis did, would say that PA is "20 miles up it", since Beaumont is upriver from PA. Being closer to the Gulf of Mexico, PA is more analogous to a butthole, than Beaumont. But then, maybe Janis was just really bad at geography. Ha ha.

I remember faintly when she died, I was 12 years old in Vancouver Canada - sometimes called 'San Francisco North' - my older sister age 20 at the time and her friends were talking about it, and what it represented as a tragedy, socially for the times. Although I profess I was never a fan of J.J., I can seen NOW, 50 years later, how hugely significant she was as a symbol of grass roots rebellion, in most of my life I was mostly a conformer to society - unless something was really outrageous - now as I age I see how full of nonsense and injustice much of society is.........for instance, European colonialism is still viewed and taught in many education systems in Western Nations as benevolent and paternal, when in reality it was exploitive and subjugative, this is just one example, there are multitudes more. R.I.P. Pearl - October 4 2020.

Laura Joplin blew my mind , sitting in the Living Room , they still had a live Chic on a swing that swung across the bar with her legs going into the street , Bourbon St New Orleans .We heard what we thought was a load Jukebox of Live Janis , went out and saw a band sat down , at first we all thought how dare someone cover Janis , then told That's her Sister , she sounded good and being her sister allowed to cover Janis ! She could sure sing , we all loved Janis a great special night !

@broskijohansson: Exactly, and this sort of music wasn't excepted that broadly as it is nowadays, either. Even now, her singing and delivery are maybe too intense and raw for a lot of people.

Jeff Cory I don’t think the audience appreciated his vile anecdote, bragging about how his friend wanted to use her body in exchange for a recording of her song. The audience gasped. I hope he felt shame then. What a horrible man. You’re right, it’s no wonder Janis turned to drugs to escape from bs people like this. Who knows what would’ve happened and where she’d be today if she had people who truly cared for her helping her through her struggles and her fame.

If you want to know who the real Janis Joplin was, read Buried Alive, a biography of Janis Joplin by Myra Friedman. I was lucky enough to find the book at a thrift store. I’m sure some library’s have it, if they don’t they will help you find one to read from other libraries. Usually for free.
@Julie Furaitor - I read the 1992 edition of Buried Alive. Myra Friedman came across as obsessed with describing Janis’ drug and alcohol abuse. After Myra resigned from her job at Albert Grossman’s management company, she refused to get another job in an office. She mooched off Janis’ memory from 1973 until her death in 2010.
Not a good book at all. It was very disrespectful of her memory.

cwb0051 Can’t really compare. Don’t know about Mozart, but Paul speaks of his brother often. Paul also had a wonderful upbringing. His father taught him to play piano, and fully supported Paul in his endeavours. Janis didn’t have that support.

Even after being bullied, when she could have turned cold and hateful herself. No, instead she touched the lives of so many people in such a positive way that you have no idea of her impact.
