i think you really see how shy Janis actually was, she wasn't comfortable around other people, you could tell watching any of here television interviews a lot of that had to do with her growing up and being made fun of by her peers and she proved all of them wrong with becoming so legendary with her music. She always fought to be accepted and loved. Sadly she was by a lot of people just never realized it because it seemed there was always people there trying to take advantage of her. :(

This is awsome thanks to the uploader for this. Don Sturdy is Howard Hesseman who later went on to the successful WKRP in Cincinnatti. It must have been great to met Janis in person this was shortly before she passed away sadly from a heroin overdose.. RIP Janis we love you, and thanks for your music and your incredible sense of humor. You are missed and died too young :(

I’m in my mid 20s and wasn’t at all alive during the time Janis Joplin was but my god I LOVE HER. I don’t love or relate to her just because she was a great singer but because her life story is VEEEERRRYY similar to mines. I’ve been bullied in school, called ugly, bullied by my parents and siblings, I feel like I’ve been beat down, chewed up and spit out by this whole world and it’s left me feeling like a hollow shell. I feel like a dead person walking a lot of the time but when I watch videos of her and see her having fun and laughing it makes me not feel so bad about all that I’ve been through and continue to go through till this day. R.I.P Miss Joplin She was legendary and didn’t even know it. What a shame but I guess that’s how the cookie crumbles. 😕😒🌹🥀🕊️❤

Yes, that is indeed Howard Hesseman. He at the time lived on Telegraph Hill in San Francisco and had an empty Sturdy Dog Food bag nailed to his front door, hence the stage name.

Talk about luck and young love. I met Janice Joplin in 1968 while I was in 9th grade - age 15. We met at the Memphis Mid South Coliseum about an hour before the doors officially opened for ticket holders to enter the arena. She was the opening music act (obviously mis-billed) for an all black southern radio station's annually sponsored event called The WDIA Goodwill Review (AM Radio). I was a hired usher for the event & she walked right up to me friendly as can be. We spoke about 10 or 15 minutes then she gave me an autograph which, because of young love, I immediately passed it on to my girlfriend at the time. :/
Neither Janice nor her band, Big Brother & The Holding Company received anything close to a welcome reception as most audience members were expecting tunes by famous or upcoming black artists/bands who would be playing their hits heard on the radio. Although Memphis is a Blues mecca ..an unknown Texas/California Blues band is NOT the same animal. After her set I heard that she swore she'd never play in Memphis again! Though I gave a piece of history away - because it was for love - which is always the right reason at least thankfully no one will ever erase the memory of it!
PS, I also ushered shows for Jimi Hendrix (2 different shows), Sly & The Family Stone, Steppenwolf, Iron Butterfly, Tommy James & the Shondells, Sergio Mendez/Brazil 66 & many others. After a sound check one of the guitarists for The Classics Four (Spooky, Stormy, Traces Of Love, etc.) actually taught me the chords for Spooky ..which happened to be chords I'd wind up using in later years in several songs by Pink Floyd! ;)
