She was so beautiful. My mother was in love with her and her music. When she finally got her own place in her late 40s after growing up in a very stressful house with 4 siblings and a shi##y father then a nasty marriage to my father while raising 3 kids, she would blast Janis Joplin’s greatest hits in the mornings. Smoke a joint, clean and sing at the top of her lungs. I remember feeling so proud and happy for her. It was my first time seeing my mother feeling so free. She passed away 4 yrs. I can’t listen to Janis without thinking about my mother and wanting to cry. Hope they enjoyed a joint together.

Literally old-people music that she sang. Not ahead of her time. Maybe with the race thing, but a lot of people thought the same, especially outside of the USA. Ahead of her time for a Texan maybe. Texans are fu'ng stupid though.

I bet they didn't. Life isn't all about becoming rich and famous. We just know a very little about Joplin. They would've had a better idea of who she was as a person. Probably a lot of them went on to decent lives, and just saw her being a whore, doing drugs, drinking, and eventually losing her life due to her stupid behaviour. They're probably even still alive today, with big healthy families.
I remember years ago watching a film clip of when Janis returned to Port Arthur for her high school reunion. She was all feather boas, bracelets and bravado, pure Janis, until something, a deeply personal question about her past, from a reporter maybe, cut her deeply, and then the smile and confidence disappeared, replaced by a look of hurt and anguish, she began to stutter ,withdraw and the media sensing blood were all over her with more questions. It makes me recall something Jesus Christ once observed in the book of Matthew, that a prophet is not without honor, except in his hometown and in his own household. Ironically, the city limit signs now read that Port Arthur is THE BIRTH PLACE OF JANIS JOPLIN.
I remember in high school I saw one of her interviews on Dick Cavett and she brought up that her high school reunion was coming up soon and she said something to the effect of "they laughed me outta the school, they laughed me outta the town, they laughed me outta the state. So now I'm gonna go home" and it always stuck with me. Something about the way she seemed so proud of herself but in a humble way was rather charming. Edit: I wasn't all the way through the video when I commented this, I had a good chuckle when they mentioned the same quote in the video!
From what I understand, Janis went to the reunion to show off her accomplishments. To her dismay, the kids that had made fun of her in high school, did it again.
Daily Slip, Jesus spoke at his hometown synagogue and was denounced when he read from the Book of Isaiah, declaring himself the person the prophet was referring to, the Messiah. Even his own brothers refused to defend him.
Janis, my Janis. I was 17 when she died. Living in SC. I cried so hard when Janis died. I was in love with her. My mother-in-law loves Janis (she's from Sweden). I remember seeing a documentary about Janis and the reporter asked, "Have anything to say to your friends in Texas?" She said, "Who's laughing now motherfuc-ers?" Classic Janis.
She was charted to die. Most people ahead of their time dies young, because they came her to do what they had to do. Also they are old souls. That's what I think.
Most of the people in the 27 club die of overdose. I've always thought they were taken before their time. Seem like very broken souls hope they all find healing one way or another
I never ever saw Janis as ugly, in fact from the moment i saw and heard her, i saw her as a vision of loveliness! Ive been listening to her since i was born since i born in 72 in Monterey,,.whoever thought it was cute to cut her down saying she is anything other than beautiful has no soul! I wish i would have never heard some of the things on this video!! How rude!
Janis was one of the very few singers who sounded better in person than she did on a record! Her voice literally hurt -- she could put me into tears with "... it just can't be." The woman broke my heart when she sang; I miss her more than I can say...
Janis Joplin died on my birthday: take another little piece of my heart, now, baby.... (you know you gotta it, if it makes you feel good) My favorite song by Janis Joplin. 💖💯 Janis Joplin was quite a character and a tiny, lady with a big booming voice. RIP. 💐💔 I learned something new today, I didn't know about Bessie Smith🤔
Have you listened to the Erma Franklin version? Much better imo. Don't see the big deal with Joplin, sang mostly covers & not the best versions that are out there. Only thing that separates her is that she was white.
She’s not ugly! She just isn’t the blonde blue eyed typical popular girl! Boring. I was teased in school too. It really hurt me! I would NEVER hurt another kid!! I think it’s beyond cruel. It’s abuse for sure. I wish she hadn’t gone through the abusive 😥
Every time I heard a story about Janis Joplin I shed a tear, she was so misunderstand by her xenophobic classmates and people around her, now this time there are little singing stars and maybe some divas who earn millions but after couple of years nobody remember their songs, Janis Joplin's music still around and alive as new generations love her music, she still the indisputable Queen of Rock-Blues , she has gone for almost half century after her nobody has replaced her
And no one ever will be as good as Janis !!!! He powerful voice. Her moves. Her laugh. Omg I loved her laugh. She knew she was better then all her classmates and the entire town. But sadly she could not show it. She could have done more at that class reunion for sure. I feel she was scared to. Due to how low they made her feel. No matter how big Janis was to the world she was always a spec of dust to her home town. If only she really knew. If only. ………. Pearl. When you passed away. You know you took a piece of all our Hearts. But Thank God you also left all of us A Huge piece of Your Heart. Forever. RIP Janis.
She was definitely a "Free Spirit" for sure. She lived in a time of when that's how it was with a lot of the younger generation. Who is to know if she hadn't died tragically at 27, if she would be alive today, there are NO gaurentee of tomorrow. I believe her influence on music would be a big factor today. But we will never know what impact she might have had.
Tye Eggleston, Now people are blinded by the overabundance of cookie-cutter music with no substance. Very few heard or will hear of Janice Joplin. In fact, music as an art form is almost extinct, relegated to deep obscure niches
She and my mom we're friends in highschool...she was an amazing artist and a true visionary...wise beyond her years...and all of the torment she endured no doubt gave her the raw emotion that is evident in her voice and comes through in her songs
I read to treat her severe acne, Janis got dermabrasion treatments when she was younger. Not the painless microdermabrasion we have today but the kind where the doctor literally “sands” your skin down. Sounds horrific
Yike! Does that explain why some people have 'crater faces'? I never understood that but I never had acne but always felt sooo bad for those who did/ do :(

N Marra, Most people with minds capable of thought and reflection (about 15% of population) get depressed. The reality, especially as applied to humanity, is depressing. I remember Bono commenting on Leonard Cohen said that Cohen stood at the edge of reality, peered over the edge, and still managed to smile. Bono found it remarkable. This should tell you something. And this something isn't pretty
Not only depressed, but also suffering from low self esteem. That is why they need the approval of the audience! Janis was the same, as well as all the others in the 27 club. They all needed the approval of the audience to boost their self esteem. They felt happiest on stage performing.
@@mightymeatmonsta Homemade psychologist, aren't you. There is no evidence of depression in Janice Jopplin. nor did she need the approval of audiences. She as clearly smart and quick-witted. And she was a performer. Performing was the way she expressed herself. At least she had something of value to express, unlike most people. Jim Morrison wasn't depressed either. He was just excentric and sadly fell victim to alcoholism, neither was Hendrix. Hendrix was a bit of an introvert and didn't enjoy being surrounded by lots of people, not even mingling at parties. It doesn't mean he was depressed. He was creative and talented and preferred spending time in his own company.
Janis was such a badass. Gifted, brilliant, remarkable... I've said it about other artists, and I will say it again- it seems like the most unique, beautiful, charismatic, people blessed with special God-given gifts are sadly quite often the most tragic. Rest in Peace, Queen.✌💖💙
Jenna Leigh's Beauty Slam, Yes. The reason is they are highly intelligent, so capable of better understanding of what goes on around them. The majority, especially in Anglo cultures are being ostracised for their intellect, in the attempt to tear them down. It's usually successful. You can't take a good mind out of a person but you can destroy a person's spirit and a will to live.
@@danutahanyga4834 man...that is an eye opening perspective. And absolutely true. I am of above average intelligence- nowhere in sniffing distance to a genius, but I am always eager to learn about new things. I was bullied horribly as a child, and I have seen other people treated much the same way. In many cultures. I feel like that may be a uniquely American phenomenon, but of course I don't know that for sure.
@@JennaLeigh This phenomenon (bullying) is not uniquely American. It is a scourge in Australia. I wonder if you've heard of Dolly Everett, the daughter of a Northern Territory farmer, a sweet-looking girl who at some stage was selected to be the face of the Akubra brand. The girl was bullied so badly and relentlessly, she committed suicide two years ago at the age of 14. The staff at the school she attended chose not to react. Quite typical for Australia. I worked with a girl who wanted to become a baker. She was badly bullied in her first year of apprenticeship and decided to exit the industry, My observation is that this sort of behaviour develops and is encouraged for some weird reason in countries with the culture and economic system is of "dog eats dog" mentality. People feel threatened so they fight for survival, best done by taking down anyone who might be in competition: ho is brighter, achieves more, or are more ambitious, in a good sense, by setting high standards for themselves. Out of English speaking countries, only New Zealand is different. Europeans, on the other hand, tend to cooperate, work together and together look after the good of their country. When I was at school (in Europe) even the slightest sign of bullying was nipped in the bud by anyone who spotted it" the fellow students, teachers,. anyone who saw it. Any form of bullying is socially unacceptable.
@@danutahanyga4834 wow. No, I most certainly was not aware, and I apologize for my ignorance. I think I've just become jaded by the utter brokenness of every American system to the point that several other countries seem like a step up. My heart breaks for the child who felt there was no way out at 14. 14!! Emotions run so high at those formative years, It crushes me to even think of the pain she was in....and her school did NOTHING? i see where you called that a typical Australian response. By that, do you mean that they practice the British act of "stiff upper lip", don't show emotion? Or is it perhaps something darker you see? And for the sweet person who wanted to be a baker....seeing someone's dreams get crushed is agonizing. I'm a makeup artist and have had numerous apprentices and assistants over the years. Some were amazing and have long surpassed me. I am immeasurably proud of them. There were some who just weren't cut out for it....and for them, i worked to guide them into what they were best at. One young lady just wasn't great with people. She has Asperger's and it made for some uncomfortable interactions with clients. However, when she made face charts (literally just where you sketch out potential looks/products used) she was an absolute rock star. Soooo, i introduced her to a friend of mine who does special fx work. Now she works in a studio, sketching out and creating masks and effects....and she is unreal good at it. She made me some zombie skin and wounds for a photo shoot I was working on, all on 2 days notice....and she killed it. I got emotional seeing her in her workshop, working, totally in her element. And she was so proud to show me what she had made for me. I'm in tears thinking about it. You make a fantastic point with capitalist/"dog eat dog" societies and how that conditions behavior. Too often, what happens is precisely as you said- the most ambitious, the most talented, the most promising get bullied and beaten down by insecure, less talented, or even just lazier colleagues. I don't know the solution to this, sadly. Sorry for the novel- your comment was incredibly thought provoking!
@@JennaLeigh Well done! Humanity needs more people like you. The owner of the Beauty and Deportment school where I used to work introduced extracurricular subjects of Fantasy Make up competition and Nail Art competition just to give girls who weren't academically gifted, a chance to shine. As for Dolly, you can look up the story on Wikipedia. It's there. She is gone so doesn't suffer anymore. I just feel for her parents who have to live with the pain of losing their child to suicide and they couldn't protect her. Australians are remarkably envious/emulous people. If one is good at something or even has an ambition to be good at something, others will bully this person no end. And they are pretty horrid too. I was left speechless after an American visitor commented to me that Australian kids are evil. Before that, for some reason, I thought American kids behaved worse. Then again I met an American family who came to Australia with the father who had a work contract in Melbourne. They only stayed 3 months. The father decided he didn't want his children to go to school here. This surprised me too. But there you are. Sorry to take so long to reply.

That certainly sounds like the media.

From what I understand, Janis went to the reunion to show off her accomplishments. To her dismay, the kids that had made fun of her in high school, did it again.

Depression and comedians are also almost always intermingled. Take Robin Williams one of the GOATS of comedy was deeply depressed his entire life.
I think with comedy, you have to have pain. Just like with a little genius theres a little crazy
N Marra, Most people with minds capable of thought and reflection (about 15% of population) get depressed. The reality, especially as applied to humanity, is depressing. @@mightymeatmonsta
Homemade psychologist, aren't you.

The fraternity 'bros' who described her as such were certainly mean spirited and (internally) ugly themselves.
Some people can brush off comments like that, but it can be deeply wounding for most.
I'll often make self deprocating remarks about my looks, but the thought of a group of people voting me ugly en masse would be quite upsetting I imagine, never mind the fact that they voted her an ugly man.
Shame on them.
Ian Macfarlane yes I agree
Who where these guys? It was ut in 62 I'm sure they are still around. Would love to ask what they think of their behavior now. Maybe that's why Charlie gave them a Whitman Sampler in 66.
@@celladora31 A lot of them probably are still around - they'd be in their late 70s/early 80s.
I'm guessing that it wouldn't be the worst thing that most if them have done, but I'd hope that as they look back on their lives they'll spend a moment thinking about how they'd feel if Janis had bey their daughter or granddaughter.
Didn't immediately get the Charles Whitman reference as Whitman's Samplers aren't sold in the UK, but I got there in the end - naughty 😉.
Fun fact...... Jimmy Johnson, NFL coach, was a classmate of Janis.
She was a cute girl, I think her personality was different. Better to step to your own drumbeat instead of everyone else’s
I love Janis her heart was so pure and honest. This is what bulling people does. It destroys a beautiful person's soul until the point of no return.
Janis objects to her life being labeled as 'tortured'. She says she had some rough moments, but she had a good run. And, yes, she knew she was being called home. ⚘💜⚘
@Sophie de Lune Because I've been blessed with the intelligence and conscience from a very young age to realize that I have the potential for Divine Connection and Communication and unlike some, I've actually engaged and nurtured it. Therefore, I've been able to communicate with her Spirit as well as many others.
I adore both Bessie Smith and Janis Joplin. so when I read that she placed a headstone for Bessie, I was in complete awe of Janis’s good character and heart. What a selfless thing Janis did for a such a good woman, who too endured so much unnecessary pain in her life. I can definitely see why Janis felt so close to Bessie. Both were absolutely amazing and inspiring women ahead of their time. May they both Rest In Peace.
Well she be close to 80 years old today. She probably would have had a long career in music . Had a small roll in a Quentin Tarantino movie and have done some commercials for AARP.
Summed up nicely.
Adam Lemus No she would not be that old, I am 63 and she was no more than 5 years older than me,,,, she would be close to 70
Beverly Balius She was born in 43...so she’d be 77.
January 19 1943.
Hard to know exactly what she'd be up to if she was still around, but she definitely wouldn't be tough to find.
David Crosby said he was there when she clocked Morrison. In his account, Jim was saying Janis couldn't sing the blues worth a damn, she was a fraud & so on- and wouldn't stop. She came back from another room, clocked him with the bottle. Morrison supposedly laughed, puked & went to the floor only to pass out in his own vomit....
Anyway, that's what Cros maintains...
I used to think Jim Morrison was really cool but the more I learn about him the more I realize he was a huge douchebag
@@chilliecheesecake Jim was a intriguing, intelligent poet and artist when he was sober but unfortunately alchool and other addictions will bring out the monster out of a lot of people and sadly that was the case for him
While he will always be one of my favourite musical artists I am not gonna excuse his behaviour and the way he often times let down his bandmates his GFs and hurt other close people
But he like so many other of the truly greats he was complicated from his childhood his feelings of inadequacy with his family and most people
R.I.P Jim and Janis
@@georgeguja6155 Very perspicacious, you said it better than I ever could have
I've read a great deal about what a miserable reprobate and sorry excuse for a human being Jim Morrison was... I never cared very much for him and The Doors. Their repertoire didn't move me to buy their records nor listen to them very much...
@Benjamin Bradley I think it brings out the douche in you. Lmao
Always felt bad for Janis Joplin. She was ridiculed even when she was famous. She was shunned at her own high school reunion. She was way ahead of her times and a true artist who paved the road for many artists today. Her voice was incredible. Don’t worry Janis your mark on earth will not diminished.
I would love to see this channel do something like this with Judy Garland.
I've been asking for that for a while lol
I would as well!
Yesss
Yes, the similarities are astounding.
My favorit from her was when a reporter asked her what she was going to do at her class re-union.She said " I'm going to laugh "
Its sad to know that the greatest Blues musicians all have such tortured lives.
Ironically that IS what makes them the "greatest" blues musicians
The sad part is how much of it they do to themselves.
Honestly a lot of musicians are mentally not well. Thats also what makes them great musicians though. Its a double edged sword
Janis is the greatest female musician ever Its a shame that she died so young

"Voted the ugliest man on campus"
Wtf she's gorgeous? How tf...
I disagree but how can anyone treat another person like that
Right?? She looked just fine the way she was. I thought she was really pretty in a natural and non-conforming kind of way. She didn't look like a lot of the women we might have found in the audience of her shows, she looked like her unfiltered self.
@@candicehoneycutt4318 she looked "normal". I think that's what I find attractive.
@JRZ Z Its funny how obvious it is that she was just a spoiled brat but everyone makes her out to be a martyr of sorts because she poisoned herself to death.
why theres nothing anymore wrong with than the next man
n..spiteful small people
Amazing lady... Beautiful. And what a voice!
My all time no1 female.
R. I. P. Janis ❤️
Janis
She cast her pearls
Into the fountain
And her tears
Began to fade
Gave up her world
To climb a mountain
Above the clouds
To find her way
The little girl
She was inside
That grew on stage
Before her fans
Became so hard
For her to hide
But paved a way
For best of plans
Now, with her loss
There is a hole
Within a world
That’s spinning round
A distant voice
That wore a soul
As true as blues
That was her sound
Words that spoke
Of what she felt
So deep inside,
The bitter truth
She played the hand
That she was dealt
Then faced the cards
That life produced

I saw Janis in concert at "The Atlanta Pop Festival" in 1969. When she came on stage doing "Ball and Chain" it changed my life! Of course the four way hit of orange sunshine probably had a hand in it too. I've been told I even resemble her a little.
Jimi Hendrix actually didn’t die after Janis, he died before a couple weeks before she did.
I don't know, maybe taking these legends' away at early ages was the Universe's way of making sure that they were remembered as legends. Sometimes when people decline as they get older, it causes the public to respect them less. And at the same time, it's a good way to teach the masses about the perils of addiction.
Madonna? Anyone?
the "ugliest man on campus" nomination story was heartbreaking to listen to
Honestly, I do not know a lot of her music although I always wanted to introduce myself to her songs. But since I came across this video, well, the time is now ... :)
Start with Bobby Mcgee. It's a great song.
6:14 Jimi Hendrix died 16 days before Janis, not 16 days after her.
Jimi died on September 18, 1970
Janis on October 4, 1970
This is the kind of stuff that make me doubt about many things said in this type of videos. If they got that important fact wrong I can only imagine else they got wrong lol
@@moonr9023 I agree! I get so angry with stuff like that. You ALWAYS have to go to extra mile & do your research before you spread the information you recieve from YT videos.. That's just what it is, I guess. Take care everybody & stay safe. Ty to the original poster of this comment for stating the correct facts. 👊✌
Jim Morrison July 3, 1971, less than a year after those deaths. These two were his peers, and he saw their fame, then ends. Drugs and alcohol absolutely everywhere for the taking at that time.
@@alukuhito I was born less than 3 weeks after Janis died... drugs were everywhere in the 80's, 90's when I was the age they died & they're everywhere now, too.
@@plm8550 OK. But in their particular positions, they would have had them around them much more than the typical person, not only of the time, but compared to the average person today too. Being as famous as they were, they would've had a lot of people trying to please them, sucking up to them, giving them free things, offering them drugs, etc. Also with their wealth, they would be targets for drug sellers. You get a rich person addicted, and you make a lot of money. I grew up in the 80s and 90s too. Sure there were drugs around, but not late 60s rock star drugs around. Do you know what some of the hippies and whatnot of that generation sometimes say? (Maybe you've heard it, since we're of similar age.) They say, "If you remember the 60s, you weren't there." I think you can figure out what that means.
Such a beautiful, empathetic soul trapped in the body of an addict. I pray the Lord had mercy on her soul.
I do too my friend. She was a beautiful person❤️
Damn, I love Jim Morrison but he definitely deserved that bottle to the head lol.
Sweet, caring Janis died of loneliness. A sadder death I cannot imagine. RIP Janis Joplin.
She sounds like a tortured soul with a good heart. Sad that she went on the path to self destruction.
I can hear my mom singing now!
Oh Lord won’t you buy me a Mercedes-Benz RIP mom I love you.
Ever hear about the book titled "Going Down with Janice"? It's written by her so claimed female lover and heroin buddy Peggy Caserta, who after all these years recanted the drug parts but not the lesbian.
Yeah I saw in another video she was a closet lesbian. She was ahead of her time.
peggy never recanted the drug parts. Far from it.
Myths cling to Janet, and why not she cultivated them. Peggy Caserta's book was pure unsubstantiated trash.
Read JANIS JOPLIN, BURIED ALIVE by Myra Friedman, considered to be, by those that knew her, as the most respectful but not worshipful documentation of her life.
@@brianboisguilbert6985 I knew myra well, and I know Peggy. Both women told their truth as they saw it. Peggy wrote a new memoir last year called "Then I Ran Into Some Trouble" that gives a brutally honest account of her life with and without Janis. Check it out. And Going Down wasn't unsubstantiated - it was all true, just rewritten by the publisher's son in law to ramp up the tawdriness...

There was no one like Janis and that's what I loved about her. The 27 Club called her too soon.
There was so much more to her than singing. She was radiant...like a night star...bright and elusive.
The real ugliness around her was jealous people.
Truly remarkable woman. She will always be remembered

One of my favorite movies is "The Rose" I watched that movie when I was a child and fell in love with Janis Joplin. Boy that little lady had some powerful pipes. I'm glad I clicked on this bc I never knew about the Bessie Smith head stone (love it) #outstanding
