I really can't explain why, but every time i hear her voice scream out "take another little piece of my heart now, baby," tears start uncontrollably streaming down my face. She was truly one of a kind and has never been replicated. Please please please do a video on Rush!!
I've been watching your history channel for quite a while but I'm just discovering your music channel. Very well done, and I'm a Janis fan, but a lot of the details I didn't know about. I'm so excited for this!
matt, i'm from brazil, and I love your videos! you forgot to mention joplin's friendship with my favorite cartoonist, robert crumb - even the author of the cheap thrills album cover :)
Janis is such an interesting person. I would encourage anyone who has not seen her in the video for Monterey Pop doing ball and chain to do so now. And then go and find Kozmic blues. Among others. Janis is a force and one of a kind. Amazing. She was drinking buddies with Jimmy Page when he was in town and they were great friends. I read about this as a teenager who was a total Zep head in the mid 70s I do remember the Cheap Thrills album cover. My brother and I were rock fans since I was in first grade with the beatles. And mom let us be so. As a kid of 10 with my brother we would look at album covers in the music stores and Cheap Thrills always stood out.
Mr. Beat, could you please make a video about Chuck Berry, Fats Domino, or Little Richard? They were key performers and Rock or Rocknroll would be nothing without them. Thanks!
If you want to learn more about Janis Joplin, I highly recommend the book 'Buried Alive: The Biography of Janis Joplin' - it was written by someone familiar with Joplin herself (having worked on Albert's staff) and features a lot of interesting details and personal conversations - it's also a period piece from 1973, and is pretty readable for a biography.
The first recognized member of the 27 club was actually Robert Johnson, a blues guitarist who was arguably the most influential guitarist of all time. Influencing Hendrix, Clapton, Muddy Waters, BB King, and many more. You should do a video on him!!
She was born the same year as my mom..who recently turned 80..yay mom...wish Janis could of stayed with us a little longer..God Bless to all of those in the Struggle. ✌️
@@standrew131 Guess I'm just not into his folk that much. His voice to me doesn't help his efforts. Liked his words and message with Don't think twice, Hurricane is good. I can do without Highlands. Maybe reaching a bit by saying the word terrible. Can't deny his greatness.
I didn't knew Janis Joplin before but after watching your video, I really like her, Thank you for such a great content. And a small request can you make a video about Pearl Jam ? Have a beautiful day❤️
Kosmic Blues is my favorite but hard to select just one. What was left out was her 10th year High School Reunion and her San Francisco home is now a Museum. I was 9 years old when she passed and I can tell you which direction I was facing and what I was standing next to. Honest about herself, including mistakes she remain real and relatable. I Love and Miss Her!
Hi sir Love the content. Extremely well put together. Could there be an episode on the short lived, bit meteoric rise of the band WHAM! Have a great day
Great short doc Matt - well written and produced - lots of photos I've never seen. and I've been a Joplin fan since 1969 - but although Albert Grossman managed Janis Joplin and Bob Dylan - Jimi Hendrix was managed by Michael Jeffrey and Chas Chandler and kudos to you for reading Myra Friedman's book on Janis - my favorite of the many books Janis has inspired
Good video. Janis Joplin is a 60s artist I have enjoyed listening to but never knew all that much about before. I liked previous comments suggesting Bob Dylan and Chuck Berry, and I might add the Rolling Stones and The Who to that list.
Great job. As far as other bands/singers you should do, I don’t know what kind of musical tastes you have. Some ideas: The Who, Fleetwood Mac (starting with the Peter Green era), The Police, John Coltrane or Miles Davis (if you like jazz), Cream…….so many bands, so little time!
Another great video!! Could you by chance do a rolling stone video, there are other ‘history of the stones’ videos out there, but I can’t be bothered to sit down and watch a 40 minute documentary 😂
Who’s here after hearing that Shailene Woodley will produce and star as the legendary late soul singer Janis Joplin in a finally-long waited musical drama biopic film about her life & career? Hope they name it “Piece of My Heart” or maybe “Pearl”. Give the film a 2hrs or maybe 3hrs long if needed. Who should direct, write & produce the film? Which studios should distribute the film? 20th Century Studios (formally 20th Century Fox), Fox Searchlight Pictures, Universal 🌎 Pictures, Paramount 🏔️ Pictures, Warner Bros Pictures, or Sony Pictures/ Columbia Pictures or TriStar Pictures? I sure do wish & hope singer-songwriter Pink, at least, appear in the film. Probably playing a different character since she’s also a huge Janis fan herself. Maybe she could play her mother at least.
Great videos!I have watched and enjoyed them all. Could you do: The Rolling Stones, Jimi Hendrix, The Doors, The Velvet Underground, The Sex Pistols, The Stone Roses, Oasis, My Bloody Valentine and Spacemen 3 / Spiritualized please?
Thank you for this! I am of course familiar with Janis, but only for her name and some certain songs. It's always interesting to hear the story behind the artist. One band that seems to have been influential for many artists, but seems to be in the shadow of so many other bands is Sparks. Their history is really cool, maybe one for you to dig in to. And to make things even better, they're still active recordin new material and touring the world 😀
Is it weird that the only two people I can think of with the surname Joplin are both musical figures born in East Texas? And they aren't related? Mr. Beat you should do a video on Miles Davis.
The algorithm introduced me to your channel today and now I'm hooked. Looking to see if you've covered Frank Zappa and the Mothers of Invention and Weird Al Yankovic which seem strangely familiar.
Mr. Beat, you should definitely do a brief history of Stevie Wonder in a future video! I want to know how he became an R&B singer since he was born blind.
good video. Couple very small mistakes - Grossman never managed Hendrix, and Janis & Kozmic Blues Band were not on the Madison Square Garden bill with Tina and the Stones. She was just backstage watching when she ran on to do the duet with Tina.
The popular song “American Pie” by Don McLean is thought to reference Janis Joplis’ death with the lines: “I met a girl who sang the blues and I asked her for some happy news. But she just smiled and turned away.”
If I could go back in time I'd go back to any year from 1966 to 1978 just to checkout legends in concert at Winterland in SF. Sadly that place closed about 8 years before I was born.
This was a great choice for a singer. But, I know I keep saying this again and again, please to a video on Elvis Costello, he has an interesting history.
What is your favorite Janis Joplin song? Also, what did I leave out that I should have put in this video?
cry baby. 100 percent!

Best singer ever I first discovered her singing Ball n Chain on the Monterey Pop Festival blu ray set.
That's how MANY discovered her. :)
That's the best singer ever? I feel sorry for you. Take meds.
Janis and Tom Jones' live perfomance of "raise your hand" is insanely fun and both of their voices are amazing. I just love it
your videos are always amazing and well made i would love if you do one on jimi hendrix and frank zappa and the doors
Thanks for the kind words and great suggestions!

Love her music but didn’t know much abt her life, banger video dude thumbs up
Thank you Mr Beat for all these wonderful music documents - they are fun and stuff 👍🎈🛀
The fact that Jimmy Johnson and Janis Joplin went to high school together blows my mind.
The most iconic unforgettable voice in music history.

Great video ! Could you do one about the Runaways ? It would be the occasion to continue talking about women rocking !
Bob Dylan? Widely regarded as one of the greatest songwriters of all time and the only singer/songwriter to have received a Nobel Prize.
I thought he was a terrible song writer. Also. A Nobel prize means you are popular with the media. Look at the winners.
