I don’t think she was hated. More like she didn’t fit in with the “in” crowd at that time. I doubt they actually hated her, although she probably felt that way because nobody paid her any attention. She was a painter who wanted to be recognized and adored and her painting wasn’t satisfying that need. That’s where the singing came in. She never actually sang. She screamed out all her lyrics as she was screaming for the attention she wanted. I think she was pretty happy with her life and not many of us get to leave this earth happy.

It seems like most of us here are just chasing after those lost pearls that spilled down the streets of San Francisco so long ago. There's defiantly a community that still exists around the songs and the time period that Janis shaped. She's one of those people that, even though she's gone, the impression of her still shouts. She feels close enough to touch, but impossible to reach. I wonder if those who knew her felt the same way.

All they were trying to accomplish was to make you feel bad. It didn't really matter what they said or did then. If hitting a soccer ball on their head would have made you feel bad then that's what they would have done. If all else fails, try to pray for them. Who the fuck is this interviewer? He's trying to make her say negative things about either herself or her former classmates, who are listening to her right there. And he's asking her why and how she's different? What kind of question is that? How does somebody answer that without sounding either conceited or (the other extreme) having low self-esteem. Janis pulled through, though. God. I love her so much. She's so beautiful, in every possible way.

She had such a self-depreciating sense of humour. And Janis was lying when she said her parents were at a wedding when this was filmed. They were so embarrassed by all the media attention her visit was bringing, on top of her wild reputation that preceded her, that they purposely stayed out of town until she left. They also turned off the lights and pretended they weren't home. I remember watching it on one of those biographies floating around here on RUclips. When Janis answers the reporter's question about what her parents think of her now, she looks at her younger sister, who says something to the effect of "they always talk about how exceptional you were, and that they agree, you should be here ", Janis says "Yeah, Mother? Really? She never told me that". They were always disapproving of her.

This is the worst interview ever. She is so bubbly and confident in other interviews. The questions they ask her she cannot even relate she doesn't like sports. They know or at least have an idea how bullied she was. Yet they ask her questions that make her uncomfortable. They are practically mocking her. Why go back to a town that murdered her self esteem. These people are prude and rude. They are jealous of her success so now they want to bring her down for doing better. Before it was cuz in their judgemental "normal" eyes she wasn't good enough. I am disgusted. This brought me to tears especially when her answer was "no comment." I love you Janis. You are beautiful but I don't need to tell you that because you already know that.

You can tell from the look on her face that some of the questions bring back painful memories to Janis. I believe a lot of young people from that era had similar feelings, and even today teenagers and young adults have the same feelings. They feel different, but the fact is we're all different, but the same. Over fifty years later and we really haven't advanced, have we? FYI, June 4th, 1970, I saw Janis sing at the Fillmore West in San Francisco. She gave everything she had in that performance and it was something everyone there would never forget. She wore her emotions "on her sleeves", as the saying goes. There will never be another like her.

Someone should have told her it was a bad idea to go to the reunion but she was probably determined at the time. It's likely true that she wanted to flaunt her success in their faces but sadly it seems she also really wanted their acceptance. As it turned out, she ended up more emotionally hurt from the experience. In hindsight though she was setting herself up for that bad experience. Showing up in her stage gear with the feathers in her hair was never going to win those former classmates over. She should have skipped the reunion.

I am a big Janis Joplin fan. I am friends with one of her lovers from San Francisco on her first visit. I've lived decades since she passed and as one matures your perspective opens up. Janis was a young girl who went through physical changes in high school as well as cultural. She was not attacked by everyone in the school. She was not looked at with disdain and discouraging actions by everyone in town. What teenager doesn't feel different or an outcast at some point. Just as Janis was an enlightened and free spirited young person in Port Arthur there were others as well. Once Janis had the platform of fame.. She openly attacked the city and it's inhabitants at every chance she had. This did not sit well with the people of Port Arthur. This did not sit well with her own parents and siblings. She also promoted openly , drug use.. which eventually killed her. She made a lot of youthful mistakes with her fame in her judgment. She paid the ultimate price for these mistakes. There may have been a small group that tormented her back in high school but it wasn't the whole town or the whole school. For people years later to still talk about them as one entity and put them down doesn't show much growth on the observer's part. I think had Janis lived and made the changes she needed to to survive... She would have found peace with her hometown just like her siblings have. IMHO

How do you know all this for sure? I'm old and I read books yrs back which claimed she was ostracised in school, and in Port Arthur. Did Janis personally tell you the opposite or what? If not, then nobody can be sure. ✌️

@@EllaJay To answer your question... I am very good friends with her former lover Jae Whittaker . I also have had conversations with her sister Laura. Laura and her brother Michael have publicly stated that Janis went through a turbulent stage in her high school years. Janis herself, invited much of the negative attention due to her actions. There was a small group of primarily boys that taunted her as they did many who were considered outcasts. Both of her siblings have stated that she also had a small and solid group of friends.
