  • Got another one for ya! Today, we're looking at the Nameless King from #darksouls3
I don't like phase 1, but phase 2 is magnificent, so please bear with me through the initial criticism--it's all praise by the end :)

What's been your experience with Nameless King? Do you consider him the hardest boss in DS3? If not, who holds that spot for you? Let me know!

EASILY the hardest boss in the vanilla game. I remember rolling through the game after getting FUGS on my str build first run and then NK rolling me like 50 times in a row lol. Literally the only time I struggled.
      Fuck KOTS though.

that might be the smoothest no-hit NK fight i've seen in a while. your tips on fighting him will probably help a lot for next time- i just sat there and tanked the hits mostly lol

Great analysis. Phase 2 is certainly a treat, and I also had the click moment for this fight with early dodging. Wasn’t as hard for me as Friede, Dancer, or Pontiff, but I’m only in my first playthrough so that might change. Will say I also like the first phase, mostly for story and themes, although the focus on the head makes it more tolerable for me. The camera is def a little annoying. Either way, great analysis!

Shouldve made the king of the storm phase only doable with the storm ruler. Then the demon souls reference couldve been perfect

I've been watching your videos and I think we are the same person 😂. I also finally learned that I had to dodge early for NK and then it "clicked" for me. But what taught me I needed to dodge early was that lightning strike from the sky. I couldn't dodge it until I really got it in my head "dodge early".

Well here I am, a phase 1 defender, you called me, I have arrived.
...Well, that's may be putting it strongly. But I do think that despite the camera being something you have to fight, it's still a pretty good dragon-type boss, better than most dragons in the series. This is because good positional fighting makes hitting the head frequently easy, the low health pool (being a part 1) keeps it from being a sponge - two complaints I have with a lot of other dragon fights. The breath attacks are telegraphed well and don't really push you too far away. I like the dynamism and the simplicity that results from playing "optimally," somewhat even more than phase 2. A lot of DS3 bosses are like this in that once you master them they cease to be difficult, but you can feel a certain satisfaction in trivializing them - a sort of pre-victory victory lap, if you would.
Another benefit of the first phase is that the attacks where the nameless king slams his swordspear down from atop his mount not only teach you to delay/time rolls as you pointed out in phase 2, but also they can teach you that not having the whole boss in sight doesn't mean their movement becomes indecipherable, a skill that really helped me enjoy the tree spirits in Elden Ring a lot more. I think you hit the nail on the head with your analysis of the second phase, I just want to share my appreciation for and enjoyment of the first part (and, like you said, be that guy in the comments).
This may all be tinted by my initial experience with the boss though, as I encountered him first in an SL1 run, so I had a lot more time to get used to the phase 1 than most bosses, and so the camera stuff became less of an issue. You tend to get more familiar with the early phases of a difficult boss far more than with an easy one.

I also found that there are some audial cues as well. When you’re under King of the Storm, I think its roar signals a Nameless King sword spear attack? But I’m not sure.

I think King of the Storms is overhated. Sure, the camera angle isn't great, but I had a MUCH harder time with the camera in Bloodborne for most of those fights. I could lock onto Phase 1 Nameless and kill him with minimal issue. You tend to hear all the time from people that you can just roll through attacks like they're nothing in DS3, so you don't even have to see much when dodging, you can just time the rolls well and be fine imo. I honestly don't see the complaint, although my opinion might change when I do NG+ playthroughs
With that being said, loved the video! We definitely share very similar opinions on our tastes of bosses in these games. Look forward to seeing more in the future!

Thanks! Yeah, I think everyone struggles with certain things/bosses more than others! For me, I just find the King of the Storm way too awkward. He's not hard to kill, but when I do no-hit runs, he's just a nuisance.

    • @chriscastaway

@@jermergerg That's entirely fair. Challenges can have players running into annoyances at the best of times. I guess that's why I always stuck with standard NG playthroughs

King of the Storm where the real boss fight is actually camera control.
It can be nightmare inducing for new players but I just played the game yesterday and yes he still beat me a couple of time but that was due to the fact that I forgot his two/three hit combos. But for the first phase surprisingly I didn't get hit except two times one of which was me running into it's fire breath. But I still remember first time playing him I couldn't get used to the timing of his attacks in second or first phase. But beating him the second time gives you the utmost satisfaction almost on par with beating Gael.

  • @hypotrain

Pretty basic fight but definitely the best base game boss. Honestly should've been the final boss instead of the joke that is SoC. They also definitely should've removed the shitty thunderbird phase and instead given him a different second phase where the attack timings change significantly

Well we don't agree about Twin Princes, but it seems we *do* agree about Soul of Cinder lol. Not liking him is probably my least popular opinion among the DS3 community. Based on your comments, I think you might like my Elden Ring vids better than my DS3 ones; I'm working on more of them. Appreciate you coming back even after our last exchange :)

  • @MakioGoHardio

The first phase ruins it for me ngl.
I’ve played the boss in NG+7 and the actual boss is S tier, but the first phase is so bad and ironically the first phase kills me the most, it’s literally a RNG shit show of a boss, if he does his fire breath then you’ll kill him instantly, if he doesn’t it’ll be a boring drawn out fight that’ll wear you down mentally.
Also the fkn depth perception in the first phase is horrible, whoever designed that arena deserves a demotion.
Also the hit boxes in the first phase are all garbage, literally every single hit box is horrible, and unreliable to position dodge.
