LORE NOTE: It's not 100% confirmed that Havel is the "Brave Dragonslayer" who served both Ornstein & the Nameless King. It's up for speculation. Personally I think he is the most likely candidate as:
    a) Havel Knights are summoned by the man-serpent summoners
    b) Havel is rumoured to have an occult plot against the gods
Another likely candidate is the wearer of the Dragonslayer Armour. I confidently say it is Havel for the purpose of storytelling, as Prepare to Cry is about interpretation - not speculation.

The camera is flawless, just don't lock on during most parts of the first phase. They gave you all the tools you needed long before this fight by giving you bosses such as Wolnir, the Greatwood, and even the Old Demon King and Sulyvahn. Your mistake for not picking up on it. These days I like the first phase as much as I like the second. It's grandiose like nothing else.

We all know that you have to remove all your armor to use a dragon stone, and Ornstein’s armor can be found not on a corpse, but on the ground, discarded. This could mean that he joined the Nameless King and became a dragon.

From countless hours in the game and doing soo much research I finally figured out why nameless king betrayed gwyn and sided with the dragons. It was because of two reasons from which the main one was because gwyn sacrificed fillilanore to trap the darks souls in the ringed city, nameless king had undying love for his youngest sister, now how does this make sense ? If you look closely at fillianore's church you'll see circle like curvings on the walls, ground which matches the ones at archdragon peak where nameless king stays. This proves his dedication and love for his sister even in a state of hollow.
Second reason is he somehow realized that the dragons were the only creatures that can consume the dark of the abyss and stop its spread, just like darkeater midir. Gwyn couldn't believe and for being racist against the dragons he exiled his firstborn and stripped off his title as the god of war.
For me I think Gwynsen's (NK) betrayal makes sense and if I were him I'd probably have done the same. He sacrificed everything for the greater good and if only gwyn would've listened all the tragedies wouldn't have ever happen in the first place. But oh well, its dark souls soooo.. 😬

I dont think gweynsen did nothing after his exile. Maybe he fought i other wars in different lands earning him the name Faraam and the floressa lion knights worshipped him. Only a theory but i think it checks out.

Dragons is more of a kids show as we all know so of course he forgives the dragons and doesn't exile his son but if we look at it with the eyes of logic and reason then we begin to see that given the chance and option which he had in the movie, he would have exiled his son for his perceived betrayal the same way Gwyn did with the nameless king. Like I said its a kid movie so some kids wouldn't understand the concept of betrayal or banishment. Us adults and some kids would however. Just my thoughts on it.

While this video is nicely presented, I think you're underestimating how purged and brutalized the dragons really were. As we can discern from Seath, the Everlasting Dragons were a sentient, sapient species much like the "gods"/humans who had souls. After the war, the only dragon-like beings present live in tiny numbers at the fringes of society, such as the Valley of Drakes, and they only have two wings -- some don't even have arms or forelegs anymore. Even the Nameless King specifically "tamed" the Storm Drake rather than allying with it like one would a fellow person. Added together, this means that Gwyn so thoroughly devastated the dragons that the remainders literally regressed (or negatively evolved in their case) into mere ANIMALS. Their sapience was lost, as well as a chunk of their sentience. The dragons themselves were forced into a sort of hollowing that removed even their limbs and turned them into not just slaves, but beasts of burden. As such, I don't think there's any kind of begrudging or hypocritical alliance or coexistence in cases like the DS II Dragonslayer and the wyvern outside his arena, or even with the Nameless King and the Storm Drake. There is only a constant reminder of how far the dragons have fallen.
Even worse for the dragons, the one possible survivor of old might not be a real dragon. As per the Dragon Head and Torso Stones' descriptions in Dark Souls III, warriors who partook in dragon worship "from ancient times" visualized Archdragon Peak as they meditated. This is disconcerting, as the Stone Dragon at Ash Lake is in this exact same pose, and as such may merely be a transformed human. This would certainly explain why the Bonfire down there is already Kindled, as well as why Maneater Shells, seemingly Seath's creations, are down there but the area is otherwise abandoned by the world above. As we can see from the deceased, crumbling dragon people all over Archdragon Peak, this meditating transformation ultimately does nothing to make someone everlasting. That revelation might explain why the Stone Dragon is left undisturbed by Seath, as well as why the Stone Dragon's presence, even through acolytes, vanishes after DS I.
Even more worrying is that the Twinking Dragon Head Stone might be saying that the mirage head is of the first human to become a dragon-like being, meaning that the entire root of the Path of the Dragon groups is just worshiping fellow humans, not even the dragons themselves. What's especially damning is that this mirage resembles the giant stone dragon on the mountain that oversees the altar with the Twinking Dragon Stones, meaning that even this colossal stone life form might be a human after all. With that in mind, the Twinkling Dragon Head Stone's note that only one person can complete the journey to the old dragons is suddenly not knowledge, but a deranged guess of a cult that can't produce results, and that would further explain the inherent violence of fighting to the death to "ascend" -- something that certainly hasn't seemed to help the adherents stay alive any better than the genuine dragons did.
Taken together, this might explain why the Nameless King, who seems to have been afflicted with the Darksign, is hollowing at Archdragon Peak. He may have realized how thorough the genocide really was, how utterly lost the dragons, their beliefs, and everything about them was, and that there was neither no one left to apologize to nor anything to potentially gain from the denizens. With time, he learned that there were only cultists who became miserable goat-like things, cultists who became pitiful snake men clad in rags, and a bell that pretended these transformations and Highlander-esque fights to the death were worthwhile. Perhaps that despair might be why messages warn that ringing the bell is against the Path of the Dragon, as the Nameless King now decides to just strike down anyone foolish enough to pursue that wasteful endeavor.

The dragons were sadly victims of their own might and brutality. Humanity knew they would have to utterly devastate the entire draconic race, the humans couldn't just beat them and sow for peace with them afterwards. The dragons were far too ruthless for such a thing, instead beings like the nameless and Ornstein fashioned not just a war upon the dragons but a merciless Holocaust. The dragons were so adamantly annihilated, pulled down from their lofty seats as it were, that it literally changed them on a genetic level. They carry with them a racial scar that had been ingrained so deeply by humans, so as that no living dragon would ever dream of trying to subjugate the human race again. Mankind humbled the draconic race so utterly that most breed of current dragons are mindless animals, where once even the least ancient dragon would've been deemed a god by the ignorant. But like I said, the dragons had to be beaten down like this, they ruled far too cruelly and possessed far too much power, the Lord's knew that so they had to grind the ancient dragons into dust so they could never rule over humans again. It's really interesting stuff.

Can you think of a more suitable and likely name?
It's in line with the tendency of most of Gwyn's children to carry "Gwyn" in their own names. Not to mention, it sounds like Mal-Gwyn, like a malform of his father's ideals.

Some random guy on facebook told me that by ethymology, the nameless Kings real name must be "Gwyndalf" (given the danish root, and paternalist conjugation; thats why it's "Gwynevere" for the female, also i was shocked that a Lot of girls in denmark actually go by that name :o )

"Gwyn" doesn't necessarily have to be in the name -- Filianore and Yorshka are his daughters, after all.
Plus, if his real name is actually Faraam, it would pair nicely with Filianore, Gwyn's youngest.

Gael with the entirety of the dark souls could beat him I suppose but I am not sure.

As the Lord of Hollows I would accept the nameless king as an ally. We'll set up trade agreements, visit each others kingdoms for gatherings and shows of good faith in our continued alliance, set up arranged marriages between our children who will grow up together as kids and friends first so it's not entirely against their wills. Well will also fight many a war side by side as allies and crush all who oppose us.

I don't know about you, but I've always believed that the nameless king betrayed his family because he knows that what his father did to the dragon was unjust, that's just my opinion. To me, dragons are not the "real" bad guys and never will be. The way of the dragon is an honorable and brave way. By the way, I love your videos, they are so detailed and accurate, and then you translated my mother tongue :) it's just great.

Theory: Ornstein actually the storm drake. (Explanation) Lighting = storm and in order to turn into a dragon you must take off your armor. And all of it is just a fun guess.
Edit: Also the Nameless king stabs the head of the dragon to gain a lightning buff which Smough did as well, but one problem is, is that The storm drake breathes fire instead of lightning.

At least this time, the nameless king seemed to show his respect to Ornstein before killing him for more power. This also helps me accept that smough would so quickly kill the still moving Ornstein in DS1, because that one would’ve just been one of Gwendolin’s many illusions

I know it's almost 3 years after this video was posted buuuuut
I think Ornstein found Nameless King, and took his point of view about dragons, that's why he's cooperating with them in Dark Souls 2 (he drops Leo ring, which is "beloved ring of a dragon-slaying knight", and his soul says that he was mentioned in old legends, so he's someone important, not some random dude with similiar armor). Don't know what he was doing there, though. Also, when defeated, if we fallow to the balcony, there is a guy from Sentinels of Blue. His halberd says that there is "to others, the distinction between the two [good and evil] can be quite unclear" and that this knight was shepperd to a lost souls. So what if Ornstein found Nameless King, learned his point of view, and then got confused, cause he didn't knew what's right anymore. He was great dragonslayer with his, let's call it, friend, and now his friend is dragon's ally. I think he searched for answers, and that's how he found Targray.
I know it's late conclusion and maybe someone already found this out, but I'd like to share my thoughts.
Btw love your whole work with DS lore.

The most amazing thing about these games is that I love them all even though I have no idea what's going on. I figured Miyazaki's style was leaving tidbits here and there, to flavor the world and leave us speculating about what could be. So I figure, "the Nameless King is a cool boss fight; I wonder what he's all about" and then watch your videos and realize there is a huge, well-constructed plot beneath it all. I have no idea how you constructed the timelines and all this information, but mad props, these videos are so entertaining. I almost wish I watched them before playing, so I could appreciate the weight of my actions on the story more.

DS1 expansion took place 300 years before the main game but Gwyn lighted the fire 1000 years before. Undead Burg hasn't been built in the DLC so that would mean the broken statue you see in the castle would be built and then destroyed AFTER the First Fire was lighted. Gwyn wouldn't be around decommissioning statues if he's busy being burned alive. It wouldn't make sense to build a statue and then destroy it. It means that Gwyn didn't exile his son but rather someone else. I believe that after Gwyn gave his life to light the fire, a power struggle ensued for the throne and his son ultimately got banished because of his alliance with the dragons. As for the one who did this, I think it was Lloyd, Gwyn's uncle, who eventually took the title "Allfather" even if it was inaccurate to say he's the one who started it all - just like Odin of Norse mythology is the "Allfather" when he has a father before him. His image is on the gold coins so that means he became king after Gwyn by exiling the next one for the throne to treason.

I liked this video really do 150%
I just feel there is 2 things that is off or not actually given about this however.
1.I don't think Havel was just a Single knight,I believe that Havel was Infact the first person to have the armor, shield, and weapon to fight off dragons. and within that more and more people joined in causing a bunch of others to become Havel Knights.
This would sort of make sense to why we find Havel armor and or Havel Knights in such places.
2.I'm quite surprised you didn't bring up that the Nameless king id the Founder of the Sunlight Warriors which could speculate to being that his inclusion in Dark Souls 3 is what lead to Sunlight Warriors being even CAPABLE of invading other worlds. This would add on as through 1 and 2 we had all assumed it was Solaire and Sunlight Warriors during that time were just a cooping covenant.

Maybe that's because VaatiVidya deals far less in speculation than you do. And when he does, he makes very sure to say so. This is why his videos are so good. His lore is easy to follow because he doesn't assume massive leaps like this, even if there is some evidence suggesting it. Some evidence is not the same thing as IS. Vaati knows this, you don't. That's why he's sitting on over a million subs.
