    I think it's a possibility that if Siegward committed suicide, a fitting end would be poison in his toast to his friend. He takes a nap like always...thinking of his friend, duty fullfilled.....only he doesn't wake. His final toast.

      H I think he wanted to give him time, time to rethink and retry to relight the flame, time for him to evade upholding his promise, having hope that his friend would willingly go on to do his duty... That's the tragedy here, even when he saw his friend evading his duty, he still held onto hope that the Lord of Cinder he once called friend, would once again uphold his duty.

    Abyss Watchers: Are kind of busy murdering each other.
    Aldrich: Is doing his own thing devouring gods and seeking power to go to the deep.
    Yhorm: Linking the fire screwed up his kingdom the first time, why would he do that shit again?
    Lothric/Lorian: Actively do not want to link the fire, believing that the coming of the age of dark would be for the best.

      @TheStraightestWhitest 4 года назад +360

      @@rangopistacho6928 No that's not the reason. Lothric was meant to, but unable to (likely). Lorian was more than capable, but chose instead to share his brother's curse. Even in their crippled state, they could absolutely do it (in fact, Boss VS Boss battle shows that the Twin Princes beat the Soul of Cinder). They simply chose not to. ''Mind you, the mantle of Lord interests me none. The Fire Linking Curse, the Legacy of Lords, let it all fade into nothing. You've done quite enough, now have your rest.'' - Lothric
      Though it is heavily implied that Sulyvahn and Kaathe influenced their choice, it is a willing process.

    Watching these videos, it just struck me that dark souls is one of the few games that embraces tragedy. Not just as part of the quest of some hero, but as the status quo of outcomes. Everything ends in misery and it's not clear whether anything really can be done 'better'. Somehow, that makes Siegward's quest even more profound to me.

      That was definitely one of the big reasons I love the games' tone and story. I'm honestly tired of games where you fix everything by the end of the game, because a) that feels cheap and unrealistic to me and b) I feel no need to replay the game to manipulate outcomes, since everything turned out okay.
      Dark Souls, on the other hand, was the first game in a while (since Chrono Trigger, in fact) to make me truly think about how to arrange the best possible ending for the game, and I realized that hey, you can't give everybody a fairy tale ending. Siegmeyer's "happiest" ending for him was honestly the best outcome I could arrange for any of my fellow wanderers of Lordran while still helping them quest for their goals, and by giving him that "happy" ending, I was able to give Sieglinde a happier ending than she would have obtained otherwise. Heck, the games don't even do what most horror games and movies do, where you can at least return things close to the "normal" they were before things went down.
      tl:dr: I like that Dark Souls doesn't let you give everyone (or really anyone) a fairy-tale ending, adding to the dark and depressing tone that makes the series so iconic.

    • @Hesloth_the_indolent
      @Hesloth_the_indolent 7 лет назад +4

      Dark Souls for me ended up being that extravagant cake laced with slight amounts of cyanide. It was one of the best things you have ever tasted(played) but with each successive bite(play through) you bring yourself closer to death(depression).
      But all said and done, I would have it no other way for that is why from the multitude of games I have played, I still remember Dark Souls.

    • @DarkLightGaming117
      @DarkLightGaming117 7 лет назад +9

      Dark Souls has always felt like a world you enter after all the REALLY bad stuff has happened and all your doing is trying to figure out exactly what all that bad was. And realizing you can't do anything about it. Your a part of the world, not a hero of this world. Your nothing special and nothing you can do will fix it. Man, this really puts yhorm into perspective. Imagine being told constantly that you were inadiquate, and then after sacrificing everything to prove your doubters wrong you woke from death to find they were right. No wonder yhorm sits alone in his throne room, that's heavy shit even for a giant.

    If you've finished watching the video, i'd love to direct your attention to this thread by /u/mythanksdotgif, who pointed out that:
    a) Before he "kills himself", Siegward doesn't sleep/snore at the end of his dialogue, like he usually does.
    b) Instead of saying "our sworn duty" as he usually does, he wishes you luck on "your duty".
    These two little points help flesh out the conclusion that we both drew - which was that he must end his life after fulfilling his duty. I think that in a way, death or absolute hollowing might be a relief to many characters who succeed in their goals before "passing".
    I wish I had seen this earlier! It would have made a nice addition to that scene in the video.

    I think that what happened when Yhorm linked the fire isn't normal because of the way it is described in more detail then other linkings. The best explanition for it to happen is in my opnion the fact that he is a giant and probably also has larger soul wich might have made the flame overflow and consume the people Yhorm had ruled over.

    Have you ever considered that Yhorm is the descendant of the Giant Lord in DS2? The Giant Lord being the conqueror that suddenly left, and the "oracle" being Nashandra before she came to Drangleic. That would explain the abyss in the profaned flame. As far as imagery goes, we see the humans on the bottom of Yhorm's throne similarly to the golems near the Throne of Want.
    Alternatively, could Eleum Loyce be the Profaned Capital? The oracle being Alsanna (a shard of Manus), and the Profaned Flame being a tainted Old Chaos? That would explain to me why the surface, Irythill, is completely frozen. If this is true, what implications does this have for demons who still survive off of the flame of the old chaos? Do any demons still survive off the old chaos?

    I have a theory that the one yhorm wished to protect, was siegward. siegward Is ash, and we know that means he tried to link the fire at some point, we also know the fire started fading somewhat before yhorm started using only his blade, considering the fact that it seems like not much time passed between yhorm getting rid of his shield, and him becoming a lord of cinder. My theory is that siegward tryed linking the fire, but failed and died. This then made yhorm toss away his shield and ad a notch to the opposite end of his blade so it could easily be used with two hands. We also know that ash can keep there weapons on their revival, so siegward could still have the stormruller that yhorm gave him. And when you and him defeat yhorm his mission is complete. With yhorm defeated, his cinders returned to his throne, and with you going to link the fire, siegward ends his life using the stormruller, the same blade he used to kill his friend. Knowing that his goals were completed, and his promise was fulfilled. maybe in death, siegward could meet his old friend again.
    Also, @SushiJaguar made a comment about this as well, I just thought I could add a bit more to it. Also credit to @[Ecchi] for the idea that siegward used the stormruller to kill himself.

      Hey ! Just passing, I know you posted this a while ago, sonI don’t expect an answer, but who could be able to predict the future, right ?
      So, I really like the theory that Yhorm’s loss is the death of Siegward, but it also raise a problem. Vaati presents the events in this order: Yhorm loses his famous unknown but precious person ; the profaned flame appears, and he throws of his shield ; he then decides to link the fire, and before that he gives a Stormruler to Siegward and asks for his word to kill him if he fails. Presented this way, Siegward has to be alive after his friend’s loss. The only possibility for Siegward to being Yhorm’s loss is that Yhorm gives the sword to his friend’s body, and asks for his word upon his tomb, without truly knowing if Siegward will fullfill hiw duty (but he could have felt that his friend was a knight of honor, being able to keep his word even in afterlife).
      That’s my explanation, to anyone who passes by, feel free to answer and corrects me, i would be thanksfully grateful.
      P. S. : I am just asking for compassion for my possible mistakes, english isn’t my first language.

He felt that he was unable to uphold his old friend’s promise alone so turned to us for his support. Not only did he want to help somebody on his journey to the Profaned Capital he also wanted friendship, somebody to laugh and have fun with much like those he knew back in Catarina. He died happily with the promise of his old friend being fulfilled and by the side of a friend he found along the way.

    What if the Profaned Flame is actually the Chaos Flame?
    In DS2, the Chaos Flame was discovered underneath Eleum Loyce, a cold and frozen land; to reach the Chaos Flame, you had to travel downwards. Similarly, Irithyll is a city wreathed in winter and you travel downwards to reach the Profaned Capitol where the Profaned Flame is. Not only that, inside one of the jail cells, you find Karla, who is pretty much Quelana 2.0, and you give her the Quelana Pyromancy Tome. Anyways, Prince Lorian fought the Demon Prince and drove him away, but what if the Demon Prince had tried to invade Irithyll and the Profaned Capitol to reach the Profaned Flame? I mean, Lorian loved his brother so much that he carried the burden of merging his soul with Lothric and supported Lothric's decision to not link the flame, so why would he travel all the way to the Ringed City just to fight the Demon Prince? Unless the Demon Prince invaded Irithyll, which is part of Lothric's (the city) domain and inhabited by Pontiff Sulyvahn, an important person in Lothric's hierarchy.
    Quick side note: Sulyvahn is pretty similar to Aldia: both are scholars and have a relationship with royalty, both are fascinated by Flames (Aldia and the First Flame/Bonfires, Sulyvahn and the Profaned Flame), and both don't want the linking of the fire (Sulyvahn persuaded Lothric not to, Aldia presents a choice but only narrates the ending where you leave the throne, implying that he wanted that). Something interesting is that Aldia says "Many monarchs have come and gone. One drowned in poison, another succumbed to flame. Still another slumbers in a realm of ice. Not one of them stood here, as you do now. You, conqueror of adversities. Give us your answer," which coincides pretty well with the Lords of Cinder: the Abyss Watchers are fought after passing a poisonous swamp, Aldrich is found behind Irithyll, a city covered in snow and presumably ice, and Yhorm is plagued by the Profaned Flame, and you who killed them all and brought them back to their thrones.
    The gargoyles are also similar to the demons who have lost their flames like the stray demon. On another side note, why is the Stray Demon found on top of a wall for no reason? It is possible that it was trapped there after the Demon Prince was defeated, as the Farron Swamp is pretty close to Irithyll. The birth of the Profaned Flame is also pretty similar to how the Chaos Flame was created, a group of women triggered a curse and was transformed into monstrosities (but perhaps they had reawakened the Chaos Flame instead and now called it the Profaned Flame). The women were also relatives of "an Oracle from a bygone age," possibly referring to the Witch of Izalith (or her daughters), as an oracle in one religion/domain is often also referred to as a witch in another. And lastly, I read from somewhere that the Profaned Flame is called the Flame of Sin in Japanese (this is pretty shaky evidence at best as I can't find the original text anymore and may be untrue) and the Chaos Flame was born when the Witch of Izalith tried to recreate the First Flame but failed, which is pretty sacrilegious and worthy of being called a sin (hence can possibly also be called a Flame of Sin).
    So, yeah. That's what I think, but there are plenty of holes in it though.

    • @PunkZombie1300
      @PunkZombie1300 6 лет назад +27

      TheEndless8 I didn't read the entire comment but I wanted to address Lorian going to The Ringed City to kill the Demon Prince. The reason you fight the Demon Prince there is because the last two demons (Demon in Pain and Demon From Below) are there. Per the Demon Prince's soul description, all demons essentially carry the DP's soul within them (the exact wording is his "pride"), so that he would be resurrected when the last one died. So regardless of where the DP was slain, he would be revived wherever the last demon ever was killed, in this case it's the Ringed City.

      Gargoyels are always protecter and no demons. The Chaos flame is like the first flame and gives the Demons power. In Ds3 the chaos dies with the demon Prince but the flame in the capital is still there.

      On the point about Aldia's foreshadowing of lords, I believe he was referring to the three DLC areas representing three kingdoms of the past "Sunken King, Old Iron King, Ivory King" whom resided in a poisoned city, a burning tower, and a frozen wasteland respectively. As for the similarities to DS3, it's possible that they just reused these themes as they've done with many other storylines in DS games, particularly the time-traveling.
      It can also be inferred that the monarchs he mentioned have never actually linked the flame and thus aren't lords to begin with, as he says "not one of them stood here, as you do now" right after you gain access to the flame, thus access to becoming a lord of cinder.

    I find the profaned flame so fascinating, it's like another immortal flame, similar to the first flame, but seemingly less powerful. For one, the word profaned implies that it is goes against god (or the gods). Unlike the first flame, which seems to benefit the gods more than man. It has traces of the abyss too, which is different from the first flame.
    Some spoilers below, read at your own risk.
    My current theory is that the flame's creation was inspired by the witch of Izalith's attempt, but actually (somewhat) successful. The Oracle noted could have been another fragment of Manus. (If they sort of represent the seven deadly sins, this one could represent envy, someone who is jealous of the first flame's power and importance). Of course, just like the witch of Izalith, the ones who created it become cursed, and transformed into those hand monsters.
    Why the profaned capital was destroyed after Yhorm linked the fire I'm not sure of. One super far off idea I've had for a while is that the first flame is somewhat sentient and has some power, and after it was powered up by Yhorm it attempted to destroy the profaned flame. Unfortunately fire can't put out fire, so the rest of the profaned capital had to pay the price, while the flame itself lives on.
    Finally Sulyvahn is such an interesting addition to this, I wonder if seeing the profaned flame, another everlasting flame, this one that isn't linked to the gods, could have inspired him and set him on a path to try and destroy the gods using Aldrich. He could be thinking of harnessing the power of the profaned flame, so he can live and rule without the first flame, and destroy the gods entirely, eventually leading to him ruling the world.
    Also, if you believe the idea that Sulyvahn was the first scholar and mentor to Lothric, it would play into his plan to have Lothric not link the fire, not give the gods more power, and leave them open to be destroyed and replaced by himself.

    Interesting theory on Wolnir, I hadn't considered that possibility for his pre-game history.
    Had another one for your consideration, if you decide to do a whole video on Wolnir or the Catacombs of Carthus. It struck me as I was discussing the Crowns Trilogy DLC for DS2 with a fellow Souls mate of mine -- I was wondering why the Bearer of the Curse, both immortal from being Undead and eternal from his immunity to Hollowing, wouldn't be a more prominent figure in the history of DS3.
    Then it hit me: there *is* someone who harnessed Dark, who took the crowns of rightful lords, and who persisted even after death, senses intact, staving off a fate that threatened to consume him. Someone like the Bearer *could* stake a claim to lordship with his power, *could* conquer kingdoms as the Fire faded, *could* establish himself as a powerful figure even before Lothric rose from the ashes of Drangleic's era.
    If the Bearer is *anywhere* in Lothric... doesn't it kind of make sense that he'd be High Lord?

    • @haltorn2611
      @haltorn2611 7 лет назад +25

      Good theory , even the description of the crown of Wolnir hints that , with: "Once upon a time , such things were bequeathed judiciously to each of the rightful lords , until Wolnir brought them to their knees, and ground their crowns to dust. Then the crowns became one..." which reminds me like a LOT the trilogy of the crowns of Dark Souls 2.
      The only problem here is the size of Wolnir , which in fact is not a problem cause in dark souls size can mean how powerful a being is (Gods in Anor Londo , Vendrick etc...) And other problem the fact that Wolnir is somehow linked to the Abyss
      Sorry for the faults , English is not my native language :D

    • @Nitrinoxus
      @Nitrinoxus 7 лет назад +17

      No worries about any faults.
      I took the size into consideration, yeah -- size seems more an indication of strength than anything, since even the human king Vendrick was enormous. And someone who'd seized the Crowns of Want and the four Great Souls (seeking strength, as Vendrick advised) could, by that same rule, tower over even the giants. (Of course, this assumes the skull used to make the goblet wasn't Wolnir's, in which case he'd definitely be human.)
      And as for the Abyss, it's been observed before that the Abyss and the Dark are intertwined to some extent, with some positing that their relationship is akin to that between Chaos and Fire -- the pitch-black void threatening to swallow Wolnir whole may have arisen originally from the Darkness of his own soul, perhaps a byproduct of countless centuries of gaining strength. Nobody really knows what would happen to a human under those circumstances, and if they can even maintain control over the Dark they harbor... or if it inevitably engulfs them.

    • @Nitrinoxus
      @Nitrinoxus 7 лет назад +18

      That's always been the trouble with DS2 -- it's so loosely connected to the rest of the canon that one could argue that Drangleic isn't even in the same world as Lordran, and write it off as non-canon, as many frequently have. Now that we can see the entire series, though, it's easier to look at it and say, "Okay, let's assume that DS2 *is* canon -- how does it influence things elsewhere, and where are its major figures?"
      And the connections aren't just limited to speculation about Wolnir, either. There's two high-ranking soldiers in upper Irithyll, past the Pontiff's chamber, that appear to have come from Drangleic -- if the King of Drangleic wanted to conquer Lothric piece by piece, cutting off the head of the Pontiff and seizing Anor Londo would be a strong place to start (and if I'm right about Wolnir, then his presence at the other side of the city could mean he was leading the charge, and the two are reinforcements). Additionally, there's an iron-clad knight in the Smouldering Ruins, apparently pinned between the local wildlife, a pool of lava and one of Gwyn's old soldiers, who's wielding a blade last used by one of Drangleic's two greatest swordsmen -- if Tsorig was acting on similar orders, and not just wrecking things up for his own gain, then it could amount to a pincer attack on the keep at Farron from below, striking both from the ruins below and the city beyond (this one's slightly more of a stretch, I'll admit -- Tsorig's more likely a mercenary knight who killed the sword's previous owner, hence the epithet Knight Slayer).

    • @accept8988
      @accept8988 7 лет назад +12

      Yeah I personally never understood that insistence in trying to make DS 2 non-canon.
      Wolnir being the one that conquered all the crowns un DS 2 is great idea, I like it. Also it seems very strange that such a powerful being like him was not tempted to link the fire. I think he fell to the abyss way before Pontiff, The Undead Legion... He wasn't even bothered in killing the Demon King at that point.

      @Nitrinoxus 7 лет назад +21

    I realize this is late, but I've been thinking about the demons. There origins, their history, and the effect that they and the chaos flame had on the world of Dark Souls. If you think about it, makes sense that by DS3 demonkind is dying out. They were not really supposed to exist, given birth by the Witch of Izalith's failed attempt to go against nature. The demons were at their strongest in Dark souls, lost power and numbers by Dark Souls 2, the only real possible demon we see is the smelter demon and demon of song, and are on the brink of extinction in Dark Souls 3. So it makes sense that in the upcoming dlc, the demons would make one final appearance......one final attempt to save their very existence as a race.

    The Profaned Capital is Drangleic. The oracle is Alsanna, The Silent Oracle (fragment of Manus). The sisters of the oracle were the other fragments. The conqueror is the Last Giant / Giant Lord.
    The crack in the mountain is meant to remind us of Things Betwixt. The treasure strewn around the throne room is meant to remind us of the treasure strewn around the arena where you fight the two Dragonriders. Even the crumbling tower where you find Laddersmith Gilligan (also found in Drangleic) is the same tower that's a part of Drangleic Castle. Also, you can find Karla (likely another fragment of Manus) near the Profaned Capital.

      The difference between Siegward and Andre, Irina, and Cornyx is that Siegward is out fighting alongside you, while the other three just sorta mind their own business in safety. They are incredibly helpful, but they aren't on the frontlines with you. They aren't fighting horrors every day and aren't being driven crazy by dying over and over again.

    It was just last week that I beat Yhorm without the Storm Ruler when I was fighting with Catarina... I almost felt bad* after killing him so many times so easily with it... But it really is sad, I never knew the true story of Yhorm... My question is, Who is doing this hollowing? Who is the real *King* of hollows that keeps bringing them back? Will we find out in Ringed City? I want to know, who is really pulling the strings in the lands of the hollows...

      @OraOraOceanMan 7 лет назад +13

      I personally think the hollowing is actually the curse of the very flame everyone is so deperate to link.
      Think about it: Gwyn linked it for the first time, becoming a Lord of Cinder. But when we fight Gwyn in the end, he is mindlessly storming towards us, lunging his sword at us, dedicated to strike us down. Don't you think he's been hollowed? He definitely looks hollow to me, and the fact that there is no intro to the fight whatsoever makes it more obvious for me. Sure, it could be that Gwyn is protecting the flame from those who wish to end the age of fire, but since the flame is fading anyway, Gwyn doesn't really have many alternatives. So instead, he could accept the Chosen Undead as a worthy successor. You beat every other lord in order to get to Gwyn, that should mean that you're powerful enough to serve as fuel for the flame.
      As far as I can tell from the game's design, Gwyn stays in the kiln (as does the being known as Soul of Cinder in DkSIII) in order to preserve the flame. So maybe the flame is using Gwyn's energy as a kind of fuel, which would make sense because Gwyn is a god (as far as I know) and thus a very powerful being.
      So why would the flame cause hollowing? Well, what does fire do? It burns, of course.
      In one of his "Secrets about DkSIII" videos, Vaati showed us that Ludleth has nightmares about something that burns him to the bone and hurts unbearably. I suppose that this is the effect of the fire that was linked. If you look at Ludleth, his skin is shriveled and he seems very weak.
      If you take a look at the other Lords of Cinder, you might think "they're not showing any signs of weakness" which is true, yet, it is said that they have been revived. Add to that that none of them -- besides Ludleth -- ever speaks a single word to you (and Lothric, who did not link the flame) and instead is out to kill you just like Gwyn. Maybe Ludleth is clinging to the Art of Soul Transposition because it's the only thing he has left, sensing the hollowing that he will soon fall victim to.
      The Abysswatchers probably fight for all eternity because they swore to stand against the dark that comes from the Abyss. But seeing as their armor is corrupted already, they've probably failed.
      Yhorm awaits the fulfillment of Siegward's promise, so he can rest again and not be involved in the fate of a world he no longer cares for. He has no purpose to live for, but given the fact that he waits when Siegward is at your side -- contrary to when you're fighting him alone -- he might just be at the brink of hollowing, still able to recognize Siegward as his friend.
      Aldrich dreamt of another age but has most likely succumbed to his gluttonous drives, meaning he only wants to devour whatever he desires, until the age of the Deep arrvies. I think that because he devoured gods, he withstood the curse for the longest time, since he is so mighty. He might know that he will outlive the fading flame, regarding his dreams of the age of the Deep.
      Note: I am not sure whether Gwyn linked the flame before of after the undead curse struck Lordran.
      And while I reference Gwyn in the first part, I am heavily focussing on the lore of DkSIII, so I did not really think about much of the lore of the other 2 games.
      I am looking forward to contributions, corrections and opinions on my theory! :)

    Wolnir conquered the ruling lords and ground their crowns to dust to make his. That's exactly what the player does in Ds2. Maybe the abyss is how he finally met his end.

    The reason why I love watching your video is because it explains the well written stories of the dark soul games that so many of us miss because we’re so focus on leveling up and defeating all these hard bosses that we don’t bother paying attention to the amazing story line the game tells.

    The Giants in all of Dark Souls always make me feel sadness for them. They seem so exploited and enslaved and yet are usually so kind and docile. Although the Giants in DS2 somehow feel different so idk. Im confused about them but I know I never like killing or hurting them but I usually justify it by ending there suffering. Idk I suck at this lore stuff and usually can't coherently understand.
