The bolt is NOT supposed to unscrew from the barrel shaped nut. At the factory when that assembly is made, the thread at the end of the bolt is upset so the bolt cannot back out and drop the spare tire carrier onto the ground. I own a '69 that I bought new and am the only owner. To drop the spare tire, you unscrew the bolt as far as it will go, lift the carrier up with the jack handle by inserting the tab on the end of the handle in the little rectangular slot in the carrier, and then push the bolt over toward the passenger side disengaging it from the slot and lower the carrier to the ground with the jack handle. And there is supposed to be a lock that fits on the hex end of the bolt that is keyed the same as the door lock tumbler so no one can steal the spare tire. Yes, the upper cover was in there backwards and there are two bolts that go thru the two holes at the forward end and screw into rear crossmember.
I mounter the spare on my 1973 with the valve stem up so I can easily check the air pressure. Does it matter how it is mounted. On this video the spare had the valve stem on bottom.
@@stevekapp6462 You are installing it correctly with the stem up. Otherwise, you have to take the tire out of the carrier and flip it over to access the stem. Actually, I removed the plastic 'tub' from the steel structure on my car and put the spare in with the stem down. That way, I can check the pressure and add air if necessary without lowering the carrier.
Thanks for your reply. I just ordered the lock for the spare. It’s pretty easy to drop the carrier without the jack handle. But I never knew it could be lowered with the jack handle. Thanks again!
Nice clear video and audio. Thanks for sharing. The more C3 videos on "how to do" the better. I just came across your video and kind of chuckled as the spare tire carrier was the first thing I removed when I brought my one owner 79 Vette home last October. It wasn't to put it right but rather the first step in a complete rear suspension rebuild over the course of our long Canadian winters. Doing a complete steering and front suspension this winter. Just love my C3 and, restoring it mechanically, is not rocket science, just pricey. lol. A person needs to watch the videos and not be afraid of getting your hands dirty. I look forward to all your educational video sessions.
I enjoyed your video. My spare tire has been out for the past several months because I had to change the fuel tank and sending unit. I also changed my differential fluid because the diff was banging something terrible on turns. The additive must have deteriorated since I had it changed about 8 years ago. So your video is a refresher on how to put the spare tire back in. One thing I wish I had done was to leave some of the bolts in place, instead of the garage floor. BTW, my car is also a 1969 Corvette 350/300HP w/auto trans. No power window, though. I've been enjoying the video series all summer. Next thing I need to order is the w/w pump. I want to see those darn headlamp washer work! Next, I'll watch your differential fluid change video to make sure I did it right, although I am confident I did. Thanks, Paul
@@johnwilliton2536 Thanks. I used the Purple synthetic stuff with the additive already in it. It's very quiet now on turns. I still have to get that darn spare tire back in though once it warms up in the spring. 👍
Hey guy, I'm currently rebuilding a 81 vette from front to back. Found this vette under a tree at a chicken farm, hasn't moved or ran in about a decade. Got it running, and replaced the computer controlled tranny, distributor and carb. The tranny was shot, so was the carb, distributor worked, but if you replace the elect. carb, you have to replace the distributor. All are now vacuumed instead of computer controlled. Rebuilt the rearend and set it to factory spec. I've been watching your rebuild, and use some of it on mine. I'll be keeping you informed on my rebuild, thanks.
Thanks, and thank you for doing this channel, it helps with my rebuild. BTW, I have the factory build manual that they used at the factory when they first built the car. I also have a good Haynes manual. I normally build on C4 vettes, and this is my first C3 rebuild. Learning C3 as I go.
Good video! My 1980 had its original spare, a T205/80 D15 that looked to never had been driven on, but was totally rotten. After looking up several tire size equivalency guides, decided that a P215/75 R15 should be an equivalent 27.5" tall tire. Went to the local Walmart tire center and compared the original spare with a P215/75 R15 Goodyear and found that they were essentially the same OD. Fit in the spare tire carrier just fine.
Thanks for sharing this helpful information. Some things seem as though they should be simple but that's not always the case. Your videos are very helpful... definitely has helped me with some repairs on my '70 Corvette!
I can't thank you enough for making these videos. Yours are by FAR the best C3 videos on the internet. You've helped me so much, and saved me a ton of money working on my 72'. Could you make a video about adjusting the window glass? My door Windows tip out too far at the top. I have to push in on the top of the window while closing the door so they don't overlap the weather stripping.THANKS AGAIN!!!
What size are your mufflers? A muffler shop installed new mufflers on what was my dad's 1974 corvette in 1989, and I wondered why the spare tire cover was never reinstalled. My mechanic recently was going to reinstall the spare tire cover but said the mufflers were too large to fit the spare tire cover appropriately. In any case, I am about to put new mufflers on the car and just wanted to know what size you have because I see your cover and mufflers fit appropriately.
@@ProblemSolverGarage any chance you in the GTA? Just bought my 68 C3 and not particularly mechanically inclined... looking for some help, anyway I could possibly PM you? Keep up the great work.

Lots of work but easy to do… you are giving me a head start thoughts for my project. Maybe saving me some effort and money. Thanks a lot Tom
