Y'all should ask Daniel for a commission of a map of Billy's hand, with all the places y'all have guessed exactly where you guessed them. That would be some amazing merch. :)
What a lovely Tuesday to watch Billy and Dom on The Friendship Onion right now 😁, when I watch them on the podcast every time it always keeps me super happy 😊
Regarding commercial labeling of eggs: if you don't have your own chickens or access to local farms, then "pasture-raised" eggs are the most healthy and humane choice. This means that each hen is given 108 square feet of outdoor space to roam and forage during the day. While "cage free" hens are not in cages, they are usually still crammed in a building without outdoor access. "Free range" hens have outdoor access, but there are no requirements for what the outside space is like or how much time they spend there.
Loved hearing Daniel's story! His work reminds me of Karen Wynn Fonstad's work, specifically The Atlas of Middle Earth. I was introduced to her and her work when I joined the Eowyn Worldwide Challenge where we use our fitness miles to walk Middle Earth.
This podcast is my happy place in this crazy world. I’m so grateful you’re doing it. I love that you’re great friends and how honestly you are just being you. I’d just love to sit and have a pint with you both. And Billy, when you get serious about things, that’s my most favourite thing of all. I wait for it “Did you know, Dom?….”
Wow thank you Dom for asking the question and thank you Daniel for answering it! I have always wondered when it was more appropriate to say The Netherlands over Holland when referring to the country as a whole. Turns out all the time!
I would love to see Deborah Ann Woll as guest in the show, talking about Dungeons and Dragons. Even more i wish to see Dom, Billy, Elijah, Sean, Orlando and Deborah as the Dungeon Master playing D&D. Surely would be the funniest D&D session ever.
You can also check the beautiful "Table de Peutinger", which is a copy from the 13th century of a map from the 1st-4th century. The Armorial de Revel also depicts wonderful views of medieval towns from the center of France. Great interview with Daniel, and thanks to you two for your wonderful podcast, à bientôt !
About eggs, the best way to know what you're buying (in Europe - not sure about USA) is to check the code printed on the shell. The 1st number means: 0 = organic egg production , 1 = free-range eggs , 2 = deep litter indoor housing , 3 = cage farming (then there's a 2 letter code for the country of origin - and a code for the exact establishment) Or maybe just don't eat any? And go for tofu :p Anyway. Love you guys!!
Actually the first maps discovered were not map of land but map of stars ! Then a few thousand years later drawing and carving of first hills and town appeared! It's only in the ancient greek times when Ptolemy drawn on of the first large scaled map of the world! Always lovely to listen to your show guys, keep going foreveeeer
I honestly wish the LOTR swearing segment became part of their regular podcast. It's hilarious and there's just so much you can do with it! Banana mayonnaise= pass for me, not being a huge fan of either bananas or mayo, but to each their own. I'm gonna have to side with Dom on this one, though. LOVED the quirky worky segment this week. Making fantasy maps for a living is the coolest job ever!
I don't know the origins of mapmaking, but there are two interesting tidbits I am aware of. John Fremont would boil water every night and time it in order to tell his elevation when he was exploring the American west in the 1840s. When I was a tall ship sailor I was told the swivel guns mounted on the stern of my boat, which was based on a 17th century ketch on deck, were used not just for fighting, but when exploring new bays they would systematically fire gunpowder around the bay and time the echo in order to make an accurate chart of the area.
The family of french-italian cartographers you were looking for are the Cassinis. They worked for the french kings during the 18th century, who needed maps to have a better idea of the territory they had to defend, first on sea, and then on land. Maps already existed before but they were not as accurate as the Cassinis'ones.
You guys are the best! My problem is that I've gotten caught up and now have to wait for new episodes. I also have to admit that I love the episodes with just Billy and Dom the best/.
Hello guys! I have been absolutely loving your podcast since I found it last week! It's one of only two podcasts I watch and listen to regularly, the other one being Normal Not Normal with Oliver and James Phelps. So I was thinking it would be lovely if my four favorite podcasters from my two favorite movie franchises came together as guests on each other's podcasts! Just something to think about. No pressure. Sending my love! 😊
lol i live off grid and am doing some chores today and totally forgot about cleaning out the ash from my wood burning stove until i heard that riddle read
Here You go. :-) The map of Cassini or map of the Academy is the first topographic and geometric map established of the Kingdom of France as a whole. It was compiled by the Cassini family, mainly César-François Cassini (Cassini III) and his son Jean-Dominique Cassini (Cassini IV) in the 18th century.
I'm a huge Elvis Presley fan, I have been all my life. Growing up, I have always heard that Elvis ate Fried Peanut-Butter Banana Sandwiches. But a handful of years ago, I saw a video of an interveiw with Elvis's daughter, in which she states that she Never saw her father eat said sandcwich even once.
Hi Dom and Billy! Before I became vegan I was eating eggs from two brands called Happy Egg and Vital Egg. These are both “pasture raised eggs” and are the most ethical I’ve found on the market. Vital Egg, for instance, requires its farms to provide 108 square feet of pasture per hen AT MINIMUM! You can find these eggs all over Southern California! Target, Albertsons, Whole Foods, Sprouts etc :)
Thanks ❣️ Loved it again❣️ Love the fictional maps!! About the chickens and eggs, here in Finland we call them “the eggs of the free chicken”. Always buying them!
There is a scene in “Leonardo” on Amazon Prime that shows the technique of measuring long distances with precision (using a sort of a wheelbarrow thingy)
I was so proud that i got the ''Black when you buy it...'' riddle before they even finished reading it, first time ive gotten one of these riddles so quickly but it was so frustrating watching them trying to figure it out xD
Dominic, you should get Billy THE LAMP as a present! Dominic knows, Billy will after he watches A Christmas Story 😉 Also, my confession - I've never seen Die Hard....I know, I'm horrible!!!!! Love you guys!!!!
Like now you see a surveyor with his laser measuring device on top of a tripod looking through it to a guy holding a striped pole with a mirror on the top. They're still called chainmen, from the old practice of measuring with chains.
BILLY, regarding your interest in the UNDERGROUND, read about Hezekiah's Tunnel in Jerusalem. It was built around 800 or 700 B C. by King Hezekiah to protect Jerusalem's water supply from the Assyrians under King Sennacherib, who were preparing an invasion of Israel and in preparation for a long seige. An inscription in the tunnel states that it was built by starting at either end and meeting in the middle. It's not known how they achieved this (it's 1/3 of a mile long) but it's been postulated that they did it with sound signals from the surface. It's mentioned two times in the Bible that I know of, II Kings 20:20 and II Chronicles 32:30.
Another perfect end to a fairly average (neither especially good nor particularly hairy) day. Although I did start rereading LOTR today. And then I got distracted by a conversation about brains and maps. Thanks Dom. Thanks Billy. Thanks John. Thanks Daniel. We love you guys. Please send me a Lawnmower 4.0 ASAP 😇🥰
"Cage free" eggs just means the chickens aren't in cages - but they can still be crowded into large, dark, dirty buildings. "Free range" eggs means the chickens technically have a means of access to the outdoors, although whether they ever actually get to GO outdoors is not a requirement! "Organic" means the chickens were fed an organic diet, with no requirements about their living conditions. "Pasture raised" or "certified humane" are the best labels to look for.
I just read "Gone with the Wind," but I've never seen the movie It was my understanding that the maps grew as the story went, because Tolkien wanted to make sure that his timelines were accurate, and he drew out the distances to help him work that out during the revision process.
This podcast is always such a great pick me up for Tuesday :) a suggestion would be to have a forum on a platform like Reddit where you can build a community of Friendship Onion fans. Considering we're interested in your quirky discussions, I'm sure we all have some really interesting thoughts to expand on them! It would be a great next step for this podcast in building a community.
Ragnick's at the wheel, at the wheel, Ragnick's at the wheel, la-la-la-la-la-la-la-la-la :D But on a serious note, all things maps is very interesting, kudos for brining such an awesome topic and a great guest ))
Great episode guys!! I loved it! I will definitely be looking into Daniel's Maps!! BTW You should come to the Land of Enchantment, New Mexico! I live in the south central part of the State in Alamogordo (Close to El Paso TX) . There is so much to experience, from adventuring (make sure to have water), Wild West history, and lots of Spicy foods to try!! Green Chili on everything you want!!
Did you guys know the movie little Nicky has an Easter egg on the DVD of the lord of the rings. It shows scenes from all 3 movies. Little Nicky released before Fellowship of the ring.
As a person from the southeastern US, I can tell you there is a HUGE difference between Duke's mayonnaise and any other mayonnaise. It is a topic of heated debate which mayonnaise is the only acceptable mayonnaise.
Whoa-boy is this my episode! So much useless info for you! Is the map you’re referring to the Cassini Map? My Dad used to survey for oil maps back in the day when I was really little, like 1980-83/84 and then did some when he was getting his second masters in anthropology when I was in middle school. I only know you have to use special tools and you really need 2 people need to do it, but bonus - I can read topo-maps so that’s cool. You can have chickens in coyote-dense areas! I’m grew up in and returned to the same small farm community in KS after college and was married to a farmer in my 20’s and early 30’s so I’ve got some knowledge of all that stuff. Farm wives were expected to do all that crap so we had classes through the local extension agency. I worked full time, raised two babies on my own, and got a MLS all at the same time, so I wasn’t a typical farmwife, but I still had to take the classes. Anywho, we have coyotes EVERYWHERE - including a couple of dens in town where I live. Cats, small dogs, chickens, rabbits, basically any small animal will get eaten if not locked up. If you have a fenced in chicken yard with their coop and some yard area inside a total enclosure including roof to keep them in at night - our coyotes only only come out at night here - you’ll be ok. To protect them during the day if you let them roam the yard, and to keep predators away from the locked chicken coop, some may find this gross - but if men pee around their yards throughout the day, coyotes won’t come around. I read somewhere it only works with men. Something about how male animals mark their territory and they can tell male humans from female. Might have to research that for my nerdy collection of useless information later. I don’t know how possible this is where you live, but my parents live on a farm and my Dad pees in the farm yard whenever he has to go (unless it’s f*cking freezing) and the coyotes stay out of the yard now. They used to kidnap all the stray cats my parents would take in but not anymore! My Dad does it in different locations around the yard and rotates each time he goes. It’s hilarious - and no, we’re not white trash even though we live in KS and my Dad, and I think BIL, both pee in the farmyard! I read a thing about it long ago because I read everything and told my Dad who tried it out, and bam! It worked! Now, as for eggs themselves - every egg in the grocery store, no matter where they come from, has to be washed due to FDA requirements, hence the need to be refrigerated. I always get (because I was married to a farmer who farmed beef so I know how much crap they put in those animals) organic, antibiotic free, cage free, free range brown eggs if I don’t have any friends who have extra eggs to give. Idk, I just like the brown eggs better. Finally, as a librarian, I also recommend researching the brand and/or farm your eggs are coming from to make sure everything is good, because as you said, they can say just about anything unless it’s Kosher certified or nut free. There may be others, but those are the ones that come to mind. Love your show!
Y'all should ask Daniel for a commission of a map of Billy's hand, with all the places y'all have guessed exactly where you guessed them. That would be some amazing merch. :)
This is a genius idea
Great idea 🤣🤣
this is an amazing idea
Good idea
Brilliant!
Billy reading my Treebeard comment has made my day! Thanks for the entertainment, little orcs!
Ditto dude!!
Imagine Treebeard saying: “There is no curse in elvish, entish or the tongues of men for this f*cking treachery!”
Guys… I need MORE of this show. I’d gladly watch/listen to a 2 hour (maybe longer) show. Anyway, great job and keep doing what you do best ♥️
The movie you're imagining at the 35 min mark already exists and stars Hugh Grant, The Englishman who went up a hill but came down a mountain
What a lovely Tuesday to watch Billy and Dom on The Friendship Onion right now 😁, when I watch them on the podcast every time it always keeps me super happy 😊
I could listen to the f-bombing LOTR all day. Please make it a weekly thing. I'm piddling myself!
Why was it censored this time, though?? It wasn't in the other. I was bummed by that because it was so funny!
Regarding commercial labeling of eggs: if you don't have your own chickens or access to local farms, then "pasture-raised" eggs are the most healthy and humane choice. The cartographer was Cassini! A naturalized french-italian. Also a very accomplished astronomer.

33:32 spent so long trying to pause to see what that was aha, just media missing! Love the podcast as per usual
Absolutely lovely podcast. I’ve never laughed so much. Massive crush on Dom now too. 😉
You guys are amazing. Thank you for doing this. Does miracles for my mental health.
That fantasy novel inside of a fantasy novel Daniel was talking about sounded interesting! Wonder if it was ever published
You can also check the beautiful "Table de Peutinger", which is a copy from the 13th century of a map from the 1st-4th century. LOVED the quirky worky segment this week. Making fantasy maps for a living is the coolest job ever!
The timing of this is uncanny. I just created a fantasy map for my retelling of Julius Caesar.
I don't know the origins of mapmaking, but there are two interesting tidbits I am aware of. The face Dom makes when eating the sandwich. You can tell he does not like it.
And Billy's majo face.
Priceless 😊
You guys are the best! My problem is that I've gotten caught up and now have to wait for new episodes. I also have to admit that I love the episodes with just Billy and Dom the best/.
Treat your significant other the way Billy treats Dom for his birthday 🎂🥳🥰 I loved it when Dom said he felt romanced!!! 🥰🥰😍😍 soooo cute 😍

Just found this one after rewatching old LOTR behind the scenes and interviews, and I love these guys to bits
Best podcast on the internet right now.
agreed

Another fascinating and funny read on the digestive system is Mary Roach's "Gulp: Adventures on the Alimentary Canal." Love the podcast!

Graham Robb's book The Discovery of France has a chapter or two detailing the mapping project of France that Daniel mentioned, for the curious.
Charcoal was the answer that popped into my head right after you read the riddle. 😃 I love riddles!
Billy having food all over his face feels very on brand... I tend to be the same way though lol
Thank you for the content, loving the priceless chemistry! Hoping for many more episodes
Thanks ❣️ Loved it again❣️ Love the fictional maps!!

This was the first time I guessed the riddle quickly lol! I almost shouted at my screen 🤣
Lol. Someone needs to send them a map of the US for the studio ;-)
I was so proud that i got the ''Black when you buy it...'' riddle before they even finished reading it, first time ive gotten one of these riddles so quickly but it was so frustrating watching them trying to figure it out xD
God I love this podcast. I'm so happy I discovered it
Love the podcast and the interesting chats you boys have. Really a delight to share some time with you both.
Dominic, you should get Billy THE LAMP as a present! Dominic knows, Billy will after he watches A Christmas Story 😉
Also, my confession - I've never seen Die Hard....I know, I'm horrible!!!!!
Love you guys!!!!
Growing up my grandpa ate peanut butter and bologna sandwiches. Haven't had one in like 30 years but this makes me want to try it again😂
Like now you see a surveyor with his laser measuring device on top of a tripod looking through it to a guy holding a striped pole with a mirror on the top. They're still called chainmen, from the old practice of measuring with chains.
Hi. Will you make any more of these podcasts? Hope you do. Best Wishes 💐💐
I can't believe you guys actually ate banana and mayo sandwiches 😳... Doms face after trying it was priceless
jay foreman here on youtube has a video about the french map! (they used triangles)
When Sam is carrying Frodo up Mount Doom
GOLLUM: Clever Hobbits, to climb so fucking high!
Why are there no comments on Daniel’s hair? That was beautiful 😻
Dead late to the party but shocked one of the lines wasn't Merry to Pippin (at Amon Hen when Frodo is bailing) "he's fucking leaving"

Ooh, I like Bill Bryson's books - I'll have to check out that body book!

I've never shouted an answer to a riddle at the screen as much as I did at this episode haha
Banana and peanut butter is brilliant. Especially on pita bread 😉
awesome guest!
Sam: If I take one more fucking step, it'll be the farthest away from home I've ever been.
Ragnick's at the wheel, at the wheel, Ragnick's at the wheel, la-la-la-la-la-la-la-la-la :D But on a serious note, all things maps is very interesting, kudos for brining such an awesome topic and a great guest ))

Have a crack at Lavender ice-cream, boys.
Wednesday, my favourite day, my favourite guys and my favourite podcast.👏👏👏
As a person from the southeastern US, I can tell you there is a HUGE difference between Duke's mayonnaise and any other mayonnaise. It is a topic of heated debate which mayonnaise is the only acceptable mayonnaise.
Peanut Butter, Banana, and honey is a delicious treat...
Has anyone done a list of all the foods they have eaten for eating the world? Being ranked from best to worst?
Another LotR swearword one; "YOU SHALL NOT FUCKING PASS*. This one really cracked me up, also; "Fly you fucking fools." Love the show keep it up guys.
Thanks, Billy! Thanks, Dominic! 🧅
When I was younger, I really liked to eat cooked ham with bananas on bread. Maybe something Billy would enjoy, too ;)
Try peanut butter with potato chips. My sister used to eat that every day, with a Coke. 😆
Love the new studio!👍👍
I love ya’ll so much. My favorite podcast! Did you see the new Beatles documentary? Absolutely stellar!!
I’m a real world cartographer ☺️ and I do hand drawn maps for people and companies!
Technically I’m a GIS professional, and myself and my colleagues create maps and map software to help people and businesses make better decisions ☺️
Would love to answer so of Billy and Doms questions on the history and science of map making.
[King Theoden seeing a mass of Uruk-hai marching to battle at Helms Deep] “Oooh F@#k!!!… so It begins!”
Apple seeds are only poisonous in extremely large quantities. Also, bananas last longer if you break them apart rather than keeping them in a bunch.
The best of both worlds, a peanutbutter and banana sandwich. Its very good!
Whoa-boy is this my episode! So much useless info for you!

My Aunt loves peanut butter and mustard sandwiches you ought to try it!
Yayyy! A new episode never fails to make my Tuesday!😍
Looking forward to seeing Dom in Critical Role
Wow this is really cool! I love doing stuff like this in my spare time. Also, free range eggs are what we have at least I think.
I lived in the south east of U.S.A. for 13 years, and NEVER heard of Mayo Banana Sandwiches!!!
Outside chickens have problems too if they eat grass hoppers the eggs will be sightly green and have a funny taste
I'm still rooting for a Chris Hadfield episode!
Thanks for the podcast, as always.
William needs to watch A Clockwork Orange STAT
I love the theme song 🎵 it gets stuck in my head
Sat here with my middle earth map behind me 😂
