"Being a geek is not about what you love, but the way you love it" 🙌🏻💙 What a lovely human, seems just so kind-hearted and I so appreciate how open he was about mental health and trauma in his life (really means something to put that out there, especially for men!). I also super appreciated the discussion around productivity and self-accountability with writing -- I'm a writer (arts journalist) and yep it can be a struggle, you have to find what works for you. I'd say that's generally true of most creative endeavors (with exceptions of course). Anywho thanks as always guys! I bought my tickets to see the hobbits in Boston this summer and I'm so excited!! 🤩
Actually, it's "nerd"
8:41
Will is wonderful to watch here, he is so animated and passionate while he talks. He's such a nerd! 😁
Can I just say how much I love that Dom, Billy, and Will are just “people” and nerds and passionate about real life. I’m a huge fan of LOTR and TBBT…not to mention how many times I’ve seen Stand by Me. These are shows/movies I’ve been sure to show my children because of the timeless themes that run through them. I’m so grateful to have found my people…unapologetic nerds who are passionate about the things they love. And also, I wanted to mention the elephant in the room: Will’s adult version of Gordy was a writer and now real life adult Will is a writer…Gordy has truly come full circle. Thank you all so much for what you do and the impact you have on the lives of others.
"I try to be the person that I need in the world." It was hard for me to hold back tears listening to Wil's compassion! What a wonderful human to accompany two of my favourite people!
This was fantastic! I love Will's enthusiasm! Can we get him back again please?
Will Wheaton - Your Geek Cave Is Kick@ss. I was geeking out just researching everything you had on your shelves man. You just jumped from 200% awesome to 400% awesome in my 3rd viewing of this video :)
WW, DM & BB. LOTR, TNG & Stand by me. This is the path of my life and what an absolute joyous thing to listen to. Absolutely fantastic thank you. Thank you.
Thank you Nerds for that conversation. I'm a fellow Nerd, who loves Star Trek and Lord of the Rings equally and fully (my 2 most favourite imaginary worlds). Listening to you, talking about all these awesome topics was just brilliant.
As a former extra in the theatre for 10 years (and today as stage manager for 15 years by now) I can also relate to that.
What I am saying is: Everything you talked about was beautiful to learn and hear from the 3 of you. It really made me feel to be part of your world, which I kinda am. Thank you for affirming that. ^^
wow, you have once again outdone yourselves in the guest department! Will Wheaton is such an absolute treasure! Medicinal strength!
Man, to see people who were part of some of my favorite things ever be as great as these three are. Loved this episode.
LoL. When Dom asked for D&D lite, I immediately said Fiasco. Gave me a pleasant degree of satisfaction when Wil said the same thing.
I have so much respect for the perfect colour gradient across Wil's games/book shelves. Even that he has the clear delineation between the games and books/GNs, but still kept the colour gradient aligned... So much respect. Edit: I also love that moments after posting that comment, Dom mentioned the same thing 😊
It reminds me of something said to me as a kid, "are you filing for storage, or for retrieval?" seems to me like the color coding aids in retrieval, since you would naturally remember the color of the box the game came in. nifty!
“Stand by me” will always have a special place in my heart.
This was lovely! Admittedly my main exposure to Wil has been Big Bang Theory and then just generally on the internet but it's lovely to hear him talk so passionately about things and it's rough hearing about what he went through as a kid I'm really glad he's in a good place now he seems like a great dude.
There have been a LOT of fantastic guests on this show, and I have loved every single one of them. But I honestly think this has been my favorite thus far! And that's not just because I am also a huge fan of Star Trek. I love Wil's passion for so many things. I loved how he described his writing process (I do a lot of the same things, especially walking around to either generate ideas or to think through characters and plots). And I especially love how he tries "to be the person that I need in the world." I already love Wil Wheaton for many reasons, and this has made me love him (and you two!) even more!
I could sit there listening for another few hours of that conversation.
Wil is such a pleasure and so open and transparent. I will be following his career and creative outputs. Love it
Listened since the very first Episode and this is the exact thing I needed to hear in my life. The LOTR movies//books/world saved me during my darkest times. Then after getting out of that and helping others who deal with their own darkness. To hear Wil talk about going through every single thing I did growing up and we both felt subpar to a parent cause of a sibling. I couldn't be happier knowing it's not just me. Followed Wil since Big bang/Tabletop and always wanted to meet him. Now if I ever get the chance it'll be even more special. Thanks Bill, Dominic, and Wil for everything you guys have ever done! Me like millions of others respect you with the highest of praise. Thank you for eternity! Would love to chat someday
Same... have you checked out the LOTROnline game? Free to play and expands the universe according to the books...
I loved this episode. As someone who grew up in a cruel household as well this episode touched me. It makes me sad he had to find familial relationships from others and not with his own family.
Will Wheaton is such a awesome actor and person. Awesome podcast. Thank you!
I was first drawn into this podcast by the LOTR connection. But I must say, the guests that you have had have genuinely become the best part of your podcasts. Wil's appearance was just fabulous. As most of your fans have noted, his enthusiasm and passion for games, videos, shows and all things "geeky," really brought me immense joy! I would love to see him on your podcast again. It's funny because I never expected that he nor producer Mark Ordesky would be my favorite guests on your show, considering some of the heavy hitters that you've had on. That's the great thing about your show, you expose us to people that we never imagined would "wow" us to the degree that they have. Billy and Dom, keep wowing us!
It's been years but man I miss Table Top so so much!!!!! I still often go back to rewatch my favourite episodes. Loved hearing Wil talk about it! A great episode!
Wil is always a fabulous interview! Loved it!
I'm so jealous that you're doing a live podcast at that con! I was in Calgary and was so hoping you'd have one there, but alas, you did not. Still great to see you all there :)
What a really lovely, engaging and enthusiastic guy. Great chat. Always feel a kinship with a fellow geek. Growing up in 80’s, for me Wil Wheaton will always be one of those iconic young actors, like Sean Astin actually, who’s movies still possess that kind of generation defining magic.
8mins in and already loving The Friendship Onion You Tube. Wil Wheaton a bonus for a sci-fi fan. Am I a nerd in the closet ?
Love watching Will nerd out on the Ready Room. I also appreciate how all three of these guys have embraced their live changing roles and not get upset when these are the roles people want to hear about decades later.
Reading Wil's book annotated "Still Just a Geek"..I was taken aback by his feeling he needed to apologize for a lot of his early behavior. (I had already learned a lot of things about Wil's early life on Mayim Bialik's podcast "Mayim Bialik's Breakdown.") It is heartbreaking but most of his dysfunctional childhood within his family with his parents is a familiar woe to many of us in that era (or lil earlier era mine being in the 60'/70's). It breaks my heart to "hear" him apologize so much. It was a different time. A not so kind time in many aspects. We, who grew up in such times and with emotionally abusive and many times physically abusive parents we all behaved the same as Wil. Thank God the world is changing. Many of us have changed drastically from the people we once were..again thank God. And no apologies, but I do thank God and attribute my personal spiritual journey for that. I tried the church route (Catholic/Lutheran/Episcopalian) but realized that churches hold the most bigoted & heart disconnected broken ppl I have ever encountered. So now I simply meditate and spend time with my Creator & my savior. No, not a religious zealot here. Infact, I am terribly suspicious of any man made religion. Faith however, is a different thing altogether. So now I enjoy reading ppl's books like Wil's who have been on their own personal journey of self reflection and learning to what it means to be truly loving, respectful and kind to their fellow human beings. I just turned 60 (God when did that happen?!!!) I AM my parents age 28 yrs ago but I am NOT my parents (sounding like a broken record but again Thank God!) I attribute a lot of my personal growth to our daughter (she just turned 25.. that's the age I feel like I still am☺️☺️ so how f*kd up is that?! The passage of time is just weird). Our daughter grew up in a different age where the differences of ppl are now accepted. In the 70's when my friends (growing up in the Midwest in rural Indiana) had to remain "in the closet. I never knew the deep agony of being gay or transgender they experienced as they were silent and kept it hidden (I've learned after we had graduated HS in 1980 and in the years afterward.). Reading Wil's book actually felt good...there is still hope for humanity to come together and accept and love one another specifically bc of our differences. Jesus was the original Ted Talk about kindness, forgiveness and Love. He said "Faith Hope and Love with Love being the Greatest." Love to Will for sharing his heart, his journey to rediscover his true self..who he was created to be bc it really does help others who lived thru a very similar life (obviously without the Hollywood aspect). We should no longer carry around the heavy baggage of guilt, shame and sense of worthlessness. I do a little exercise where I pack all that hurtful, harmful stuff to my soul..into a large steamer trunk. I place it as a train station (okay..full disclosure it's King's Cross bc I am a MASSIVE Harry Potter fan☺️☺️ only 2nd behind my absolute LOVE of Tolkien and LOTR!) The train pulls up and a footman struggles to pull that heavy steamer trunk onto the train and then the steam whistle blows and away it goes. Taking away my painful memories that threaten my newfound sense of Peace that I have found in the last 5 yrs. For anyone looking for a great book that will be a helpful step towards setting you free of the guilt or pain of abuse..please do take time to pick up a copy of Wil's ANNOTATED version called "Still Just a Geek. God Bless Wil🙏🏼✝️🥰🙋🏼♀️ Keep up the good work in everything you bring to this planet..Kindness, Love. We all need to forget politics which is only designed to work thru an absolute division of humanity. We are all perfect creations...
Another fan-TASTIC episode!!
This episode was deeply enjoyable. Wil's enthusiasm is infectious, and he's full of great advice. I was sad to see the interview come to a close. He makes it exciting to be a geek!
Wow this is Gordie from Stand by Me he's the only one from the movie I didn't know and for the first 40 min of this podcast I thought he was just some random successful gaming dude lol I love that movie sooo much, and a really amazing episode! Cheers🍻
This was a legendary inrerview guys. Please can we have a part 2? hopefully we get to see you's play board games or League of Legends one day. Fantastic episode guys! :)
Excellent show! This is one that definitely warrants the extra run-time.
GREAT interview! Wil is an amazing person. He has an infectious passion for his work and working with him must be a real joy.
Listening to these three talk was absolutely wonderful. All three of you are uniquely inspiring. I feel very grateful to be able to watch such creative and respectful gentlemen talk about being an entertainer, artists and creators. All three of you have inspired me to be a better man and to stay enthusiastic and authentic.
Always a pleasure to hear from Wil, so passionate - great episode boys!
My dad is an Ur-Nerd and I brag about it constantly, which is probably the single nerdiest thing about me.
I also relate to assuming everyone knows something that’s actually quite niche. I remember I was trying to make a joke that involved singing the Pokémon wild battle music and no one got it. I legitimately assumed everyone knew what that song was and what it meant
This was superb. Will needs to come back for an encore! My favorite episo so far.
Amazing interview. My son has just started at drama school, and I am very aware of not being pushy or totally obsessed with his acting. He wants to do it and I live him for it. I would live him if he did anything. It was interesting to hear from a child acting perspective.
My friends and I often use the concept of "future me" 😂. I'll fully be like "future me better be happy because i really don't want to do this" 🤣
I miss Tabletop, I've since found others but that's what got me into more board/card/dice gaming. Nothing beats banging the table to mess up the trains prior to scoring lol.
I am a huge Wil Wheaton fan. I had the privilege to meet him at a GenCon convention along time ago. I watched him in Stand By Me then in Star Trek Next Generation. Yes Wil is in Season 2 Ep 10 of Picard.
Lovely stuff as always 💛💛💛❣️
And congratulations and happy first anniversary to you all 🎉💛🎉💛❣️
Hope that we’ll see the live podcast here too❣️
Enjoy your weekend there in Orlando ☀️❣️
I will be there for your live podcast! I cannot wait!!
Were you there and what was it like?
Would love to see these 3 play board games! Maybe a bonus TableTop episode! (I can dream, right?)
What an awesome idea! I'll be dreaming with you 🙂🤞
I'd be happy with a LoL stream
Yay for the "In Search of.." call out. And I LOVE watching Discovery+ right now. I'm a huge fan of Finding Bigfoot, Treehouse Masters and River Monsters.
To be honest I had no idea who Will was when the episode started (since I'm terrible on celebrities). He was still very captivating and seemed like a guy I could totally hang out and nerd out even as a almost 20 years younger gal. 😄 I'm just smidge of jealous of his game collection though! I only have one closet or warderobe or what ever it's called in our livingroom filled with board and console games since we don't have more room 😃
Probably the best interview so far. Loved this!
What a lovely guest! To be honest, this was my first time really getting to know Will, and right off the bat, what a brilliant person. Thank you Billy and Dom for always bringing on wonderful people. I love learning more about all of them and their interests.
I adored Will’s continuous excitement and passion for the topics and things he loves! I also get super passionate about the Fandoms I love, in particular, so hearing just how meaningful things are to Will was amazing! It felt so welcoming and accepting! His quote about trying to be the person he wants to meet in the world made me tear up. Such beauty in that line. 🥰😇
And I LOVED hearing more about these fun games! My favorites are Catan, Ticket to Ride, and Clue! So, it was cool hearing those mentioned. I highly recommend Catan, Billy and Dom. You’d both love it!!
"Being a nerd is not what you love, it's the way you love it" - Wil Wheaton
I only know Wil from Geek And Sundry (Tabletop, and I think he did an MTG show for a bit? Not the Day[9] one) and Critical Role, but I really like him because he so clearly cares about the things you find in those sort of settings and groups. It's just so visible how much he enjoys being a person and sharing cool games for the purpose of having memories of the people he played them with.
A bit of a shame there was no Billy And Dom Eat The World, but the extra time to have him talk and explain things was very welcome, too.
I haven't seen TNG. I know Wil from TBBT, The Guild, and G&S. I have always really appreciated his passion for geekery, but more so that's he's just wanting to leave the world a better place. What a quality guy.
You noobs are really missing out... TNG is a must watch (except S1) and if you haven't seen Stand by Me... just... just do.
That was one of the most enjoyable onion podcasts to date. I wonder if his Board Game RUclips channel is still available. Great work fellas.
It sure is!
ruclips.net/p/PL7atuZxmT956cWFGxqSyRdn6GWhBxiAwE
I absolutely love Will Wheaton. He was so fun in Big Bang Theory. His passion is so infectious. Love him. This was such a great episode.
@Dayspring Only real geeks think that of the show. Go get laid.
@Dayspring The irony of you watching this whole episode of the podcast with WIll talking about being positive and trying to be kind and enjoy the things you enjoy, then coming down here just to make a comment of pure negativity in response to someone talking about something they like. Congrats on being the problem :')
Wil is the reason for my current obsession with tabletop games. I miss his show so much!
I only know him as Chaos, but watching this, it seems that a lot of what I liked about that character is due to his actual personality
You guys are awesome & you're on a roll with your guests! Doug Jones (Star Trek Discovery!) then Rich Zack (entomologist extraordinaire!) and now the delightful ur-geek Wil Wheaton (Star Trek multiverse, Still Just a Geek memoir)-- thanks for all the joy & entertainment.
Three of my favorite gentlemen of alltime on one podcast - perfection! 🤩
Love watching a new friendship for life starting !
Wow! Will, Bill & Dom...Perfect episode
I love how animated Wil is, and the difference in the explanations for the tabletop games.
This is a clashing of universes I didn't realize I needed but OMG it brings me so much joy
Wil Wheaton is one of those people i have to respect....He's a touchstone for my Nostalgia and a genuinely good person!
He's such a sweetheart! You guys always get the best guests! Wish I could join you in Florida I'll be looking forward to the live episode!
Stand By Me, TNG, Big Bang Theory, The Guild, & Ready Room... have always loved watching him work & now can appreciate his acting even more. He is definitely living life as the best version of himself, but I can honestly say that I went from wanting to be Wesley Crusher growing up, to wanting to be a little bit more like Wil Wheaton. You're welcome future-self!
Aloha fron Hawaii boys. I'm jealous of the people about to find out about TFO at the Orlando MegaCon. They're going to have so many great episodes to watch.
Just finished the episode and I have to say wow. This is an amazing episode of the podcast. You all felt very into what you were talking about. Will's enthusiasm is honestly inspirational.
Much respect to Wil for being so open and awesome!
I can't wait to meet you both and watch the live podcast at Megacon Orlando this weekend. Already purchased autograph pre-sale ticket for you both, Sean and Elijah to sign my map of the Shire. Dream come true.
I just realized it’s Tuesday! Great to hear you guys every week 😌
We're so lucky to have people like Wil (and our hosts) putting so much passion and positivity out into the world!
I’m so excited to listen to this episode on my way to work!
Definition of wholesome!
Perfect Tuesday to watch another episode of my favorite podcast, I love Billy and Dom they always makes my day happy and better 😁
Really enjoyed this episode, your energy was marvellous!
Maybe one of the best episodes ever 🥰
I love his ready player one narration
Best. Episode. Ever.
Yesssssss the friendship onion is here!
Would love to come and see you guys as 22nd May is my birthday but as I live in the south east of england I won't be able to make it! 😢 shows a hit, seen every episode and look forward to the next! Cheers guys
This episode is absolutely amazing and definitely in my top 5 of all time so far.
Loved this guys!
Yessss. Been waiting for this one. Big Wheaton fan.
My lord what a sweet dude💜
Back in the late 80's a friend of mine could complete the original arcade game if Donkey Kong on one quarter on fast speed. I'm 52 now and that still blows my mind. Btw Terry had a cigarette hanging from his mouth the whole time that added to the mystique.
can't lie, I would have fallen a little bit in love with Terry for that
What a beautiful man. Thank you Dom and Billy for being amazing, and having amazing guests!🙏❤
I use future me as motivation too! I like to say it out loud either a "don't worry future Rachel, I gotchu." Or a "thanks past Rachel" in the moment.. it sounds silly at first but.. we humans are really wired for that gratitude and you wouldn't think it works when comes out of your own mouth... But it totally does.
Amazing episode, I hope that you and Wil talk more in the future.
Is it just me that wants to see a DnD stream with Billy, Dom, Wil and Sam?
I love Wil. Thank you❤️
I love Wil's after-show thing for Trek. He's such an empath. Now, bring on HIS Star Trek show!
Yikes. No thanks
I'd watch and subscribe.
Finally! Someone else who has to walk/do something to distract part of your brain so I can work on something in my mind in the background! Everyone I know thinks it's so weird!! Thanks for sharing Wil! I wish I knew the psychology behind it, too! Then I could explain it better 😂
It's nice to be getting into the deeper stuff sometimes. And Wil does it so openly, it's great to listen :)
Will’s pure passion and enthusiasm for his work just radiates out of him. He’s adorable, sweet, kind and I loved hearing him talk about his inspiration for Stand By Me because his performance in that movie is iconic and now we know why it’s so incredibly moving…because it comes from a real place of pain. I’m sorry to hear that he had a rough childhood but I’m glad he’s in the best place in his life now that he’s ever been. Please have him back, we could listen to him for hours!
Love Wil Wheaton! Great interview!
I know a bit what Will is talking about with his family experience. His story relates to those people who have experienced what he went through. I hope to have an update telling your experience with board games with Will.
I know what Will is talking about with his family.
Love this interview.
I watched the interview Wil bid with Myaim Bialik. It gives more perspective on his upbringing.
This is such a 6 degrees situation here because Wil has actually sat and played D&D with Sam and the group and you guys were so close to mentioning that with the star trek option that you would have rolled down another path of excited chatter.
Will the live Friendship Onion be recorded ? :o For people faaaaaar from the States as us Europeans .. :( haha
Keep the loving work, love you guys !
Amazing interview, thank you all. If you have a chance to play D&D with Wil you absolutely should. He's also a very talented DM. Just don't let him touch your dice!! He's a legendary cooler.
I am not a fig plucker,
Nor a fig plucker's son,
But I will pluck figs,
'Till the fig plucker comes.
11:20 Mr. Do hittin' me in the feels Wil Wheaton
13:25 near the time I was playing Mr Do and Donkey Kong on the Colecovision/Adam. Time Pilot. Donkey Kong Jr. Buck Rogers.
Loved the episode guys this podcast is getting better and better each week
Best episode ever. When is onion coming back guys?
I've always appreciated Wil's work, he's a very engaging individual. I Haven't seen everything he's done, and I haven't read all of his work, but when I see him or hear his name I'm immediately drawn to find out what he's working on. I even used to communicate with him regularly on the internet about 20 years ago, and I hung out with him a bit at a convention back when _Star Trek: The Next Generation_ was about to premiere. I miss his absence from social media, but I understand why he abandoned things like "twitter" due to people out in the "stupidsphere" (Wil will get that). It used to make me angry?...upset?...when people would leave so many negative and abusive comments on his Twitter or RUclips channel. Two things that I really miss are his _Tabletop_ gaming show, and his _Radio Burrito_ podcasts...those two things that he made _...where a thing didn't exist before,_ got me through a lot of depressing times. And I always wanted to proclaim I was an alumnus from one of his _Star Trek_ cruises, but alas. Wil, if you see this, I appreciate those times you responded to me online, (and answered my emails), and I hope you one day do some more _Radio Burrito's,_ and I agree with Melissa below, can we get him back on some time?
