- Billy and Dom talk to Entomology Professor Richard Zack of Washington State University, in which they discuss how he got involved in the field, insects' connection to the greater ecosystem, before specifically exploring house flies, mosquitoes, and even hissing cockroaches!
Richard Zack is a professor in the Department of Entomology where he also serves as curator of the M. T. James Entomological Collection. Rich has received many recognitions including distinguished teaching awards from his college, Washington State University, and several professional societies. He was named as one of the top five instructors at Washington State University as chosen by the students.

Great guest, great interview, great episode. Sorry to look like a downer but the moth that visits Gandalf is only in the film. In the book Gandalf does not visit Saruman on his own volition. What happens is Saruman lures him by telling Radagast the Brown that he has news he wishes to discuss with Gandalf. So Radagast (who appears in The Hobbit film) passes on this message and Gandalf goes to Orthanc, but before he departs Radagast he asked him to ask Gwaihir the Windlord to come to Orthanc as he knows he is short of time and needs to ensure the Hobbits have left the Shire. That's why the Eagle turns up. (They're not really eagles, they're Valinorian spirits in Eagle form.)
Favourite word, well I suppose it's a phrase but it's relevant. It's the French word for moth, Papillion du Nuit, which literally translates as The Butterfly of The Night.

Hearing your discussion about inebriated insects made me want to share a fun experience my mother and I had. We were working in the garden in the late fall/early winter. The compost pile was full of apples that had fermented a bit. Many paper wasps were enjoying the fermented apples. They would fly clumsily away from the compost pile, with lots of drops and apparent dizziness. As we were working in the garden, the wasps would drunkenly fly over to investigate us and bump into our faces or arms and then continue on their drunken way. Reminded me of a drunken uncle smooching my cheek at a family function. We joked that they were drunkenly thanking us for our work in the garden.

I’m so glad you guys were able to get an entomologist on the show! I love Dom’s enthusiasm for insects and arthropods in general. I feel the same way about cephalopods. I think they’re the most bizarre, lovely, fascinating creatures on the planet. I once went to the Monterey Aquarium and spent an hour staring at a cuttlefish. I just fell in love with the little guy. ❤️
Oh, yeah. Cephalopods are amazing. The way they move and investigate their environs is endlessly fascinating to me. It seems to denote a genuine curiosity about the world around them. THey're so clever about overcoming obstacles, too. Watching them problem-solve is pure joy. I'd love to spend a day living as one of those chameleon-octopi.
Cephalopods are my favorite things in the ocean!

What a fantastic episode! I never thought I'd overcome my roach phobia, but Dr. Zack is not only a master entomologist, he might be a wizard as well! Thanks for this amazing guest, a wonderful episode, and a great podcast.
Aaaah this is my bread and butter! I have a minor degree in entomology and worked in an entomology lab for 5 years sorting mosquitoes to species and doing some work with West Nile Virus. I also keep tarantulas, 7 of which are just little tiny babies right now. Thank you for having Dr. Zack on your podcast, this was really fun to watch!
One small correction though is that urticating hairs on New World tarantulas are only found on a spot on the abdomen called the mirror patch. The longer hairs covering their body are setae used for sensing their surroundings. The urticating hairs act like fiberglass and have barbs on them that dig into the skin, causing irritation. There is no evidence that any chemical irritants are involved. Old World tarantulas are much faster and more inclined to bite, with stronger venom, because they don't have urticating hairs.

As a huge nature enthusiast this one of my favourite episodes. This should have been a two-parter!

Dom, for your fungus gnat situation you should buy a sundew or a butterwort. Very effective carnivorous plants for fungus gnats and almost too easy to care for and look great!

Wow, Im getting more and more surprised at how parallel mine and Dom's interests are)) I wish you would tell more about your terrariumistic and gardening experience) I love millipedes, I got err 5 species at the moment and 4 species of pillbugs and 2 species of roaches and an insectivorous snake :) Well... and a dog and 5 cats... one more dog... and plants are everywhere and a garden... when i say it like that it looks like a handfull, but its lovely! I think you may invite "Clint reptile" or "Snake discovery" or "aquariamax" it would be amazing!!

I’m so happy! I finally caught up with all the episodes and I can honestly say it is one of the best things I listen too! My best friend and I bonded over LoTr back when we were 19 we are now 34 and still love LoTr. She’s my Frodo and I’m her Sam…but we tend to act more like Merry and Pippin 💕
My question for you is If you could go back in time and relive one day (or event) of your life what would it be and would you rather have your conscious mind go back into that past selfs body or have your whole self (as you are now) physically go back in time? Misheard lyrics: growing up my family listened to a lot of Bob Marley. In “Redemption Song” there’s a lyric that’s says “O pirates yes they rob I.” My family was shocked one day when I was singing along and sang “a pirate kissed a rabbi” - it took some convincing for me to believe it wasn’t the real lyric!
plenty of RUclips’s and internet chatter about “bouncer bees” turning away (and worse 😳) tipsy worker bees but I read somewhere once that was because the door guard bees job is to keep out invaders or sick bees carrying disease that might infect the hive and drunk bees acting erratic get mistaken as a danger to the health of the colony 🐝 thanks for the fun guest 😊 missed some funky bug tune this week tho

But it's awesome so far. Dom and Billy are my 2 favorite hobbits as they were a team and my Nan use to call me Pippen and one of my favorite cousins Merry on how cunning and mischievous we were as children. Obviously before the movies.

There is one thing I do feel I should comment on and that’s the segment on tarantulas. The Professor was right in that the high majority of “New World” tarantulas do not have medically significant venom (not every NW tarantula has been tested), however that only applies to New World tarantulas. Old World tarantulas, on the other hand, don’t kick urticating hairs, and most OW tarantulas’ venom is medically significant. You probably won’t die from the envenomation, but the effects will range from ruining your day, to ruining the next could weeks, to needing hospitalization. Also, no matter the species people can be allergic to the venom just like bee stings. That’s a whole other issue. Tarantulas are awesome and I would hate for some to handle an old world T and get bit, not realizing the professor was only talking new world tarantulas.
Can you bring on Howard Shore (or another film composer) and ask them about the film scoring process?? Pleaaaaase!?

When I first looked at the thumbnail I thought that Billy had regrown his beard in the span of one week before realizing that it was just a picture he used for communicating via whatever technology with Dom while he was in Canada.

I absolutely love Werthers Original, but yes, be very careful with them, I actually almost choked on it once, while driving! One of the scariest moments of my life! Good thing I had a bottle of water next to me
Speaking of what makes an insect an insect, I remember at my kids preschool they sang a song, to the tune of head, shoulders, knees and toes: head, thorax, abdomen, abdomen. Head, thorax, abdomen, abdomen. Eyes, mouth, six legs, antennae two, head thorax abdomen, abdomen!
Anyway, I loved it because I didn’t want my kids to be scared of insects. They aren’t. I did other parenting to make that happen, but it was a cute song!

I bet Dom would love neocaridina shrimp. These are little freshwater friends who don't grow more than about an inch long and come in lots of colors. They are a bit more sensitive to water quality than your average freshwater fish, but if you take the time to get your parameters good in the beginning, they practically take care of themselves. They breed pretty easily, and the moms carry their eggs around under their bellies for about a month until they hatch. Mine are dark blue and look like little gems.

I teach my preschoolers that even the 'worst' bugs have a purpose in nature. I'm sure that if we got rid of mosquitos some other animals would be deprived of their food source.

when I was in Prague I took a picture of the name of the tube station nearest to the place I was staying, because as I was waiting for the train to arrive I realised I had not payed attention to the name and Czech names are not as familiar to me as German or English ones. Question about mosquitoes: I understand they are the insect most responsible for human evolution. But that evolution is a response to a threat of illness and death. Survival. But the question I want to know is why we don't try to completely eradicate the mosquito. I would rather humans not have to evolve to survive a mosquito. Do they serve any positive purpose? (I know they are part of the food chain. But besides that.) Thanks
Love this. So much. One thing. Shelob. I mean, the moth is great, but Shelob is so important to the story. Plus so well done as far as how a spider behaves. Great podcast though really. I love all animals as well. I always help bugs in my house escape. Lol Also to me, Werther's are more like toffee than butterscotch. A very hard toffee.
Except Shelob ain't spider 😃 There is no spiders with stingers. It's in the book described (if I remember right) to be spiderlike but never as a spider.

I'm a horticulturist, currently head seeder for an organic herb nursery, but once upon a time I was working for a small business in Los Angeles County, people would bring me bug samples to identify on a daily basis, I was 'the bug girl' lmfao Weird title, but I embraced it xD
Where I work now, we get Tarantula Hawks as big as your index finger and it's one of the most painful stings in the insect kingdom. 🤕

I’m not a big lover per se but I know that all of them are vectors for pollination and if the world went short of insects, we would experience disease and famine.

Reckon you should eat some Twiglets!! I've grown up eating them and I love them but they can be quite polarising i think, maybe due to the slight marmite-y taste to them. I don't know how accessable they are in America but I'm sure you guys know what I'm on about.
41:48 as mentioned moths and butterflies are messengers in spiritual way. If some1 got that small creature land on him you know what I mean. I had such a moment about year ago. I been working in warehouse and somehow inside the building was a moth. I spotted it from some distance, it gradually comes my way and landed on my wrist, then simply stayed there. I shake my hand, then get moving to to canteen and further to exit warehouse while moth was still sitting on me. It was perfect sunny blue sky spring day. I shook my hand to let moth fly away, it was still on me, moved further from the building it was still there. I didn't know why that little creature landed and stayed on me for so long as it was easily couple solid minutes but it fell as truly unique moment. In that moment as 35 years old - never something like that happens to me, neither I recall seeing or listen about event like that to people I know. It's not like a stray cats or some other even wild animal that sometimes approach people. Eventually I went far away from building, over parking into the grass area and only then still after some moment moth flew away. It's sad that they are messengers for your spiritual awakening, to let trust your intuition, choosing correct path etc. I'm only spiritual to certain degree but that moment with moth came to me and stay so long feels magical. I even get some pictures saved of it ^_^

People with autism can be prone to suffer from imposter syndrome. It happens because we learn to mask our autistic traits to try and pretend to be neurotypical, (we often dont know we do it, especially when the autism is undiagnosed). The result is after many years of masking our real personality and pretending to be neurotypical we eventually forget what our own personality is which often causes severe mental health problems later on in life because we no longer know who we are anymore. It’s one of the many sad sides of being autistic
I home educate my daughter. She is High Functioning Autistic with Social Communication disorder (Not offically diagnosed but on paediatric papers) with a possibility of mild dyscalculia. I am not Autistic however; but one of the things I love is I get to encourage her at all times to be totally herself, which has been a lovely jouney. She will go shy if she doesnt know a person at first but after that she will openup and be herself. Thank you so much for sharing your experience as its always great to hear insight of peoples personal experiences :) I do hope that in the future that people will become more accepting of Autistic people entirely instead of seeking to change or modify their behaviour and/or expect them to 'act' normal as so many neurotypical people seem to expect them to do. Everyone regardless of condition or no condition should feel and be able to totally be themselves all the time. Hearing about masking autistic traits however, she did this for a number of years when first coming out from school which makes me wonder how many Autistic people actually do this. She now is just herself an accepts that and is confident in who she is. A bonus of Home Educating is that when she does go into sensory meltdown I have fidgit toys and sensory aids and the focus is on relaxing her out of the meltdown and either back to educating or continuing with the day depending onwhat we are oding plus it has the flexibility to be done around whatever we are doing that day or our lifestyle is :) . I am studying a SEND Teaching course at present so I find this really interesting, so thanks for sharing. I hope you have a great rest of the week and a goo weekend to :) x
@@debrajones5183 thanks. Me and my daughter are autistic. We knew my daughter was autistic from an early age but i realised i was autistic last year and am now going through the official diagnosis process. I have always found the neurotypical world very unaccepting of me (i just didnt understand why, i almost felt like either i was of a different species to everyone else somehow). Once i realised i was autistic it made every single rejection and struggle in my life make sense but hasnt improved my mental health. I’ve also found there to be virtually no help whatsoever to be available to people in my situation.
@@somethingfromnothing8428 I wish you the very best with the diagnosis process :) - it is great to hear that everything now makes sense to you as im sure that brings you a certain degree of relief/peace. I think with things like mental health, taking each day as it comes is enough and never feel like you have to live upto what others expect you to be, you are amazing and there is noone like you :) and to also recognise that its ok to not be ok and accept that. I think theres so much stigma attached to mental health within society, but truth be told is that every person on this planet struggles at some point and if we all have compassion with each other and are kind then the world is a much nicer place; there should be no stigma attached to mental health. Its not to say that we all get on with everyone because we dont but we can at least be kind to those we meet :) . My daughter did not get an official diagnosis due to only being slightly on the scale etc but she is nonoftheless Autistic. You mention that there is virtually no help to people in your situation, I acknowledge that because although there are plenty websites and organisations, the only real understanding and support normally comes from others that are neurodiverse. I will always chat when you need a chat x
@@debrajones5183 thank you. I think the lack of understanding and acceptance in the neurotypical world comes from the fact there is no awareness of it. All these videos and articles by autism charities and organisations are only going to be seen by people who are autistic or is related to an autistic person. I would love to see more popular podcasts and shows like the friendship onion or others spend an episode talking about autism with both specialists and autistic people because it would actually help spread awareness to people who normally wouldnt otherwise give the videos a second glance
