I think Sean Astin calling out to play LoL with you boys is one of the greatest things ever. Especially since there's kind of this stigma around him that he wasn't one of the super tight Hobbit bros (understandably due to fatherhood, etc.). I would like to hear more endearing anecdotes about Sean being nice and cool.

As much as I adore those films and I do, I love all the extra stuff as much! It's amazing to me. It's so fun and amazing to see all the work and details put into the films to make it real.

Brad Dourif is such an incredible and versatile actor! He played the doctor on Deadwood as convincingly as he played Wormtongue in LOTR. Would love to see him as a guest on the podcast! 👏
He guest starred on The X-Files back in their first season and he was incredible. Amazing actor
I remember him originally for his performance in Dune.
I just finished watching deadwood for the first time and it enrages me that it never got finished. He is arguably the best actor in that show.
Much like the voice actor Billy West (Bugs Bunny, Futurama, REN and Stimpy, Howard Stern, etc), Brad Dourif always seems to have at very least a loose connection to some of my favorite stuff. His presence alone has got me interested in Deadwood, and I’m typically not a western guy.

Hi guys, fun fact: salty herrings from haribo are a german thing (not as salty as anything of the same description from scandinavia), but it seems we only enjoy them in the north of our country, when my son was living in the south he struggled to find any decent "Lakritz " at all. And yes, here it would be pronounced at the end like the Ritz hotel, no ish :)
Am German and lived in the Netherlands for a time: Apparently salty licorice is indeed something for the Netherlands, northern Germany and Scandinavia (had some Scandinavian friends in the Netherlands)
Yeah when he said those were popular in Scandinavia i was like huh? I have never seen that packaging before! So thats explains why if they are sold in Germany.

Just caught up all the shows, and here is my BUTTER story.
My brother and I grew up big midwest eaters (Grew up in Michigan). Our grandparents on dad's side lived in FL and we would alternate visits with them and mom's parents in West Virginia. For big eaters could there be a better value than a buffet? Our loving grandparents took us to our first ever called "Duff's Smorgasbord". We were quickly assured the cost per plate was not as accurate as "per person" because we were free to eat as much as we could. Dad enforced the Christmas/Easter rule that we had to start with some "real" food before destroying the dessert table. My younger brother thought he hacked the rule getting his starter salad, for on the salad stand was a large bowl of what looked like little scoops of french vanilla ice cream. Dad tried to hint at the disappointing mouthful about to occur by asking, " how many rolls are you getting with that first plate?" As we sat, the entire family watched my little brother took a full spoonful of scooped butter. The assumption was strong enough to drive his mastication a solid three chews, before the proud face melted into disgust. We all laughed as he asked, "what is wrong with this?"

My brother and I love pomegranate, and my father would also lovingly bring us cups of the arils from the store sometimes on his way home from work :) We’d eat them with ice cream most of the time, but they were also lovely mixed into different drinks

The LCS is the pro scene for League of Legends, they're in LA, and I'm sure would love to incorporate you guys into an appearance at the very least! Your people should talk to their people, I'd love to see these two worlds I love come together
Trivia, the specific product Katjes Salzige Heringe, salty herring, is a German based candy, and has very little to do with Scandinavia. You won't (easily) find any Katjes salty herrings in stores in Sweden or Norway. More likely in Denmark. There are other fish-shaped salty licourice candy to be found of course! In Sweden the most common is Cloetta's "Malaco Salt sill". Norway is not that salty licorice-loving in its candy (the way Sweden is). Finland (a Nordic country but not Scandinavian) is a big licourice consumer but has more "sweet" salty licourice than the hard-core salty ones (with higher concentration of Ammonium chloride, salmiak). With that said, great podcast!

Actually the ship vs. boat thing is much harder. There are various definitions depending on who you ask, but to me the most convincing clear-cut definition is that when going in a curve a ship will lean outwards while a boat will lean inwards. That's to do with the shape of the rump, whether or not it's got a keel etc. ... that's one of the few definitions that rely solely on intrinsic qualities of the vessel, so a ship won't turn into a boat if you remove all the lifeboats and a boat won't turn into a ship if you can construct a small enough boat to fit on the larger one.

Since this came up, although I'm no linguist, I understand that in some parts of the US there is something called the Mary, merry, marry "merger." The vowel sounds of these three words are coming together over time. I understand that it's mostly just people in the northeast US who pronounce all three of them differently. I make a distinction, but I grew up around downstate New York (Long Island and Mid-Hudson Valley).

When I came upon your channel, I was ELATED ❤ To be able to spend this time with you both, is beyond amazing. To say that I am a lover of ALL-things Lord of the Rings, is a major understatement! I have read "The Hobbit" & the trilogy at least 15 times ( I am showing my age in saying so😊) I also am a collector of various copies of "The Hobbit" & the trilogy, beginning during the happiest time of my life, when I was fortunate enough to be an assistant manager of a book store. I believe that the movies are THE BEST depiction of the source material EVER!

Huge fan of this show! It is bringing back memories of my high school experience when I used to watch LOTR (including the commentaries) with my BFF. I wanted to clarify the "marry" versus "merry" pronunciation. In the US, it is regional. Being originally from Georgia (in the South), I too pronounce both of those words as the same sound; however, having lived in Massachusetts (in the North) for the past ten years, I can tell you people up here distinctly pronounce "merry" different than "marry." It's the exact same thing with "pin" versus "pen." Hope that clarifies things a bit. Again, love the show! Tuesdays are now my favorite day of the week!

I'm a native/lifelong American English speaker and I honestly don't hear a difference between "Merry" and "Mary." It's really strange, because I know they're being enunciated differently thanks to context clues, but they sound exactly the same.

When I turn on these podcasts no matter what I've been doing, in couple of minutes I find myself turning my head to watch the screen and a big smile appears on my face. What is this sorcery?
Liquorice is a root, but it looks a lot like sticks. Had to look it up to be sure, because here in The Netherlands they are called liquorice sticks. And the Dutch term for liquorice itself translates to 'sweet wood'.
Love your podcast :D my suggestion for 'eat the world' is something we call 'salmon bellies'. It is made in the shape of an eel and sold as a substitute for eel. Because fishing eel is very problematic and they are close to extinction.
It has a very nice smoked flavor.
Ooh and if you want to try more liquorice, we have tons of choices of course. Some of my favorite are 'zoute rijen' (shaped like little doll garlands), 'tikkels', 'panda drop' and 'piramide drop'. And last tip: soft cinnamon candy canes
