      The LOTR DVD set really did have the most incredible body of additional BTS content, multiple commentaries etc!! Added SO much to the all-around experience of the films, and as an artist it was incredibly inspiring to see the high level of artistry and commitment that went into creating all of the unique resources. I regularly go back and watch the appendices to the movies every couple of years, and still really enjoy them.

    Boy, Richard is so awesome, I think he's a genius! I'm absolutely fascinated by his and Tanya's, and Weta's work in LOTR. Before even watching the "making of" movies. But when I did watch them, it brought so much more magic in the story, you know? It doesn't make sense whatsoever, but this is how I feel about their work. Stunning.

    • @annastevens1526
      @annastevens1526 Год назад +1

      I absolutely agree! Seeing how much thoughtfulness, enthusiasm & creative skill went into the creation of the props, sets and SFX really elevated the films even further in my opinion!
      I'm not a huge fan of the goofier elements of Pete's film-making (Legolas shield-skateboarding & the whole of the Hobbit trilogy springs to mind 🙄) But I do adore the detailed cultures which the creative team developed for the LOTR trilogy, and the skill with which the physical manifestations of those cultures were realised. I hope all of the amazing permanent props they created have been saved as museum pieces, because they really are a remarkable part of NZ's history!

    I get it 100% when Richard said he knew he would be miserable if he didn't follow his passion. I have a normal "day job" but I *have* to sit down and write/work on my novels 2-3 hours every day. I'll probably never be published and most people think its a massive waste of time but I need to write for my mental health and that's all that matters. Kudos to Richard for actually turning it into a successful career, bet it took so much hard work to get where he is today.

    • @thomasroeder1
      @thomasroeder1 2 года назад +1

      If writing is what you love and you want to mak a career out of it, then I would say you should start believing that this is possible! If/when you've managed to write a novel, maybe you could start sending it to publishers to get your foot in the door

    • @pyrpyr5Wolf
      @pyrpyr5Wolf 2 года назад +3

      @@thomasroeder1 Oh I fully believe my stories are worth reading(my critique partners and beta readers do too!). Today's market is, however, oversaturated and you need an agent unless you want to self-publish and while I've had good feedback for those novels I have queried --I've finished 7 books if we only count what I've written in English -- but not had an agent bite yet. Maybe I'll get a promotion and have money enough to self-publish one day or hit the right agent at the right time but even if I don't, writing is like breathing to me and I'll never stop creating new stories.

    I've watched the making of LOTR more than the movies at this point. Richard Taylor is one of the most inspirational persons I've ever seen/heard! So exciting to see him and hear about his life and work! Love the show guys

    I really enjoy how you ask questions and let the guests answer. And you listen to the answers. Much preferred to those who make statements and expect the guest to simply agree (whether correct or not). Thanks for the lovely time. :)

    Try a celebrity stream of LoL for a good cause. Invite Elijah and Sean. If they refuse to play you can shame them for being bad ppl 😈

    You guys can do a League of Legends charity game to get Sean Astin and Elijah Wood. It would be fun to see the hobbits working together! And if they have fun doing it maybe they will want to play more :)

    Dominic! The first thing I ever saw you in was Hetty Wainthrop Investigates, ages ago. I remember how excited I was when I heard you'd been cast as Merry! (I was one of those nerds who followed TheOneRing .net)
    Your gravelly voice, today, was a bit of a shock, but I'll get used to it.
    Bill, you remain a Tookish delight, and your cadence is the perfect compliment to Dom's growl.

    I love Richard talking about the Triptych. It's so fascinating to hear about his inspiration and process.
    I'm a songwriter and I definitely find that some people don't think of creative jobs as an actual profession. People kind of wrinkle their noses at dinner parties when you're asked what you do for a living.

      I can't imagine having Bosch as a bedroom wall decor!! 😆 Richard clearly has a very high tolerance for the macabre...
      You're right about the difficulties of creative professions, alas? 😢 Although people idolize the members of some fields such as acting or singing, I think even then they are mostly distracted by the glitz & glamour and rarely recognise the very real hard work that is entailed.
      I think part of the problem is that there's this deeply ingrained socioeconomic refusal to accurately recompense just how much time & skill really goes into artistic work of any kind...? I'm not even sure why this is a thing! It seems to be viewed as not "real" work, or something artists should be happy to do for love of creativity or desire for audience exposure?
      That then leads into the issue of creatives often having unstable job prospects and relatively poor pay, which makes a lot of parents & teachers discourage kids from pursuing such careers for fear they may not be able to economically survive. Creatives in many fields seem to be poorly unionized, & are often solo freelancers, so negotiating for better conditions and recompense remains difficult...

    Absolutely fascinating to hear about Richard & Tania's personal & professional journey - all the previous interviews I'd seen had just focused on their current work? Had no idea they'd been a team from such an early age! Or that potentially, barring the vagaries of fate, Richard could conceivably have ended up stuck as a construction worker or kids' TV creator... Would be awesome to hear the journey from Tania's perspective as well!
    Also, margarine sculpting?? 😂 OMG!
