For the record, according to knifesteelnerds both Vanax and Magnacut are rated at 10/10 for stainlessness, but we saw a difference in the real world results, which is why I would also like to see LC200N compared since it is also rated 10/10.

I wonder if you inadvertently decreased the corrosiveness of the solution by mixing an acid and a base. They will react and off gas that horrible smell, but are also neutralizing eachother. Vinegar is acetic acid 2-3 PH. Bleach is sodium hypochlorite a Base with a PH of about 12. Either way, it did its job and showed valuable results. Thanks for all you do.

My main camping blade is uncoated (since I stripped of the black coating) and is made out of 1095 carbon steel (which people claim is notorious for rusting) and funny enough, there's not a speck of rust on it and I've been using it when camping for about 7 years now. That just goes to show ya that taking care of your blades matters more than whether they are made out of a fancy supersteel.

Excellent comparison, Pete. Magnacut and Vanax continue to impress. For everyone's knowledge: breathing chlorine gas will give you chemical burns. Chlorine gas (Cl2) is unstable, and wants to react with EVERYTHING, and quickly. It reacts with water in your cells to produce hydrochloric acid, and hypochlorous acid. Your eyes and nasal passages will get chemical burns that will really smarten-you-up. About the only thing you can do is administer oil of peppermint to ease the burning sensation until you heal. Super serious stuff.

Unfortunately for the knife world it will still be about 2 more years before we start seeing Magnacut become more mainstream. The fact that Benchmade is only releasing one model with it and it’s in August, just shows that we are still a ways away form that. But I’m personally hoping it becomes as common as S30V. I don’t think the cost of production is much higher but we shall see what companies do price wise.

Another great vid and man I wish more people in the knife world would watch these or do their own tests, especially the hypebeast types that seems to run terrified from any steel that isn't super ultra god-mode corrosion resistant. So many people seem to act like any steel that can rust at all shouldn't be used when, in reality, you truly have to fully neglect or intentionally put effort into actually damaging a knife from rust, even basic 1095 or 1084. Been camping and kayaking and hiking with carbon steel knives for years and I've never even seriously pitted a knife... not even on a multi-day kayak camping trip that rained most of the time. I have no idea why some people seem so scared of rust-able knives.

@@RUclips-Censorship-Police Dude if you're going to lie at least make it believable. All you have demonstrated with this comment is that you have so little knowledge and experience with carbon steels that you don't even know how to lie about them believably. Hell I have 1084 bar stock I keep in my shed, in a state that gets lots of precipitation, and none of it rusts. I have carbon steel Mora knives I've left out in the rain over night that didn't get more than a few pepper spots that wiped off. I've been using high carbon steel knives for 20+ years in all kinds of wet conditions, including working in a brewery and taking them on river trips, and none have ever once pitted or got more than surface rust. The evidence is in the video this is commented on.... D2 sat in corrosive liquid for 2.5 days and received no damage beyond discoloration.

I am actually quite surprised that the quiet carry doesn’t have titanium thumb studs, it almost seems like an oversight that they missed and it also makes me wonder how it’s hardware would fare in extreme conditions. If you want to guarantee any steel will rust first remove the oil on the blade by wiping down the blade with acetone, acetone is a strong degreaser and leave behind no oily residue like dish soaps do.
The next step is to pickle the steel by soaking it in white vinegar, I believe what this does is mildly scores the steel on a microscopic level to create more surface area, though I am not certain I do know that this makes it rust evenly across the surface.
Finally, the best solution for rusting steel is taking hydrogen peroxide and then stirring in salt in until the solution is saturated, you will know it is saturated when no more salt will dissolve in. To apply this peroxide-salt solution use either a spray bottle or a cotton ball.
I learned this from rust bluing steel the old school way and though you wont be able to blue stainless steel I believe that this preparation will rust any steel on the market.

Someone said the thumbstud is made of titanium (more noble metal) so there could be some galvanic corrosion going on but the thumb stud has a much smaller area than the knife which means galvanic corrosion is less of an issue. My guess is crevice corrosion.

So, you mixed a base, an acid, and water. The reaction you made was them neutralizing and off gassing chlorine, and then you made it even less reactive with the water. It would be more torturous to the steel to do any one of them by itself(besides water), because mixing them lowered the strength. The one benefit of the way you did it is that you probably made layers of different mixtures that acted in different ways at different depths on the steel all at once, giving a more diverse test all at the same time.
