With the amount of hype, it’s hard to imagine magnacut “living up to the hype”, but this is close. Thanks for doing the work!
Heyyy everybody, Nick here ^
@NickShabazz I said it earlier in one of your videos and I’ll say it again. MagnaCut it’s by far the best super steel I’ve ever owned and I’ve owned many. It literally stays sticky sharp for month of hard use. I’m also rocking a 64 hrc Dawson fix blade which is around 500$ so it has the absolute best heat treating but still.
Considering the hype is coming from actual data comparing different aspects of knive steels I am 100% sure it can live up to the hype
What makes magnacut so special is that its not specialized its good at everything.
A jack if all trades knife steel. Good edge retetion, toughness, corrosion resistance, to sharpen...
There are no weakpoints
And for a general use blade I dont want a one trick pony like rex121 that has crazy good edge retetion but bad toughness and isnt stainless
Generally you have to do a compromise with each knive steel but not with magnacut
@@martinerhard8447 don't be too fast there,
Have you seen 3V Delta?
A new heat treat on 3V!
Magnacut is in serious trouble 😅
Except for maybe stain resistance!
@@eliteknowledge7298 Jup I have already got the chance to use it
But both in edge retention and corrosion resistance cannot keep up with magnacut. Also harder to sharpen at same hrc.
Its overall very similar to regular 3V that is heat treated correctly and well its is basically 3V just a different heat treatment.

First time I've seen an allusion to a Classical philosopher in the comments on a knife channel!

Hi Pete, thanks for this long-awaited test.
I've got a tip for you on the slippery cutting board: I put a silicone baking mat underneath my large cutting boards when I'm butchering. The tackiness of the the silicone makes the wood and countertop stick and prevents any real sliding. That might help with your cutting board issue.
Also, what do we have to do to get you an adjustable height rolley office chair with an appropriate height range so you can find a comfortable seat height while you do a cut test?
Cheers
A damp towel works great too! Cloth or paper. That's what most commercial chefs do
@@awwwshucks443 chef here mate, and you're bang on. Wet Chux cloth is perfect.
That’s dedicated in pain and still willing to go thru more pain just for a video that I watch whilst eating my lunch.
Top man keep it up.
I would love some micarta scales made from the cut ropes from your videos. Idk if you do anything with them after. Sounds like a nice idea
That would actually be super neat
This idea exists since years! Make it Real
Can't wait for a Magnacut "To The Max" episode. The steel has been optimized for edge stability and toughness, it should take more extreme angles than you have done before. Also, I think you should get a microscope to start showing us the damaged area of the blade.
Yeah
Sterling offering mate!! Definitely looking forward to your Double Magnacut Mule Deep Dive. You are unquestionably one of my favorite influencers and I value the time and wit you share with us.
Man. Magnacut is even more impressive than I was anticipating.
I can't wait to see the steel he said he was thinking about working on, that is focused more towards edge retention. I bet that will be some crazy stuff.
Holy crap. It's amazing how well it slices paper even with a wear spot.
Even as a long time viewer, I appreciate the intro to the steel and testing method. Well done!
Shelf liner would help the cutting board from sliding.
You could raise the height of you bench with some timber and re-install the wheels. Also add a non-slip matt for you cutting board
Those are sweet toolboxes
they really are! zero regrets
That's a crazy amount of cuts on a factory edge.
Shawn Houston tested his 2 @ 62 & 62.9 with the resulting difference.
Appreciate the hard work in validating Magnacut, Pete! Great work. I'm only a little surprised at the number of cuts you achieved, but continue to think this is a blade steel game-changer. Kudos to Spyderco for the quality heat treat. (Halpern Titanium's Mule scales, which can be temporarily attached, and used on multiple Mules, would be a great long term investment).
I own one of the Magnacut Mule Teams as well. I had a similar experience with the factory edge lasting much longer than I was anticipating. It seems to hold an edge better than most of the other knives I own.
Lucky!
it was tough getting one. so I got two 😜
You might want to add a stand up work station. Have the desktop about upper stomach height. That way no bending over. Bring the work to you instead of the other way around.
Really impressive for factory edge. I was expecting 4V level of 4she retention but it did even better. Great job by Spydecro.
DAMN! 😲 Can't wait to get my magnacut in a few days! 👍🏼👊🏼
The hype is real. Excited for the “Magna Cut Unleashed” video
Receiving a Native 5 in this steel today. Very nice test
Curious what this will do with the mirror polished edge. Maybe blow our minds and try the dual grit sharpening method? We like to see you in pain! Haha
That's impressive. I may have to have a look at another Salt.
they are going to do the native salt and also a manix lw (I think)in magnacut
Thank you for the video Pete. I really appreciate your dedication to the community!!!
Nothing brings me more joy than waking up for work and seeing not one, but TWO video notifications from the cutmaster himself! Thanks for the video Pete! Can’t wait to see what magnacut has to show us.
Cutmaster Pete sounds like a scratch DJ.
CPM cutmaster Pete.
I know I was literally going to bed Monday night and said man it has been a while since a Pete cut test. Woke up and bang way to kick off a morning.
I didn't believe the hype till I saw Pete test it. Looks like it's great. Thanks
If i am not wrong the heat treat can vary by 1 hrc point and that makes a difference if i remember correct triple b did note a difference
Putting some high density EVA foam underneath the cutting board would help a lot with keeping it steadier.
Good stuff. Without your efforts we wouldn’t know how good. Thanks Pete. The feeding the rope cramp 😬
It IS a sickness. Well, a malady, anyhow. It’s called RSI! Thanks for your dedication, Pete.
Definitely a serious risk with this type of testing.
Thanks! I can't wait to see how they perform with 17-degree edges!
Use a damp wettish T-towel under your chopping board, it won't slip. Old chef trick from the kitchen.
Very impressive, especially for a factory edge! I'm impressed. Guess I need to get me some magnacut.
In a few months there will be some other overhyped super steel..
@@dieseldabz7104 So you’re saying this is “overhyped”? It may at this point be appropriately hyped. Who knows, yet?
From this point onward all pre-existing stainless steel is obsolete, people will keep making old stainless due to cost, but functionally anything made out of old stainless is now purely out of date archaic technology.
@@budthecyborg4575 the only limiting factor will be patent law rights (monopoly pricing).
@@mdubb4855 In 20 years that won't be an issue either, we're at a pivotal moment in blade history, like the invention of the Bessemer Process or the discovery Stainless Steel, though not quite as revolutionary as those examples, this invention is still similar enough in that it radically changes what is considered "normal" steel performance from here on.
Noice. I know that Magnacut is on its way, just don't know how long I have to wait.
That was quite a lot better than I expected, I thought maybe in the 500 range. Not surprised that Spyderco Mules are well ground though, that's expected. :)
Now I'm starting to regret I didn't try harder to get this mule.
Just started watching this channel. Going to subscribe. You got me with that Final Fantasy 7 track!
The video we have been waiting for
Looks like MagnaCut really might be the bee's knees
Not really. Its good but not that good.
@@tacticalcenter8658 Based on... ?
So far with what I'm seeing it's the best balanced stainless steel. I have one on order, no first hand experience yet.
@@rajun50 dont base your whole world around 1 test on one brand. Its certainly a good stainless steel with high toughness. But I implore you to see more tests and don't think that every magnacut will cut as much as a mule, as many manufacturers were saying they are only heat treated in the low 60s. I'm not suggesting its bad. Im just suggesting its not the bee's knee's. There are other tests showing more information on the steel than just Peters videos.
@@tacticalcenter8658 I'm fully aware there's more info out there. I've looked at quite a lot of it. I mainly buy Spyderco knives, so other manufacturer's heat treat is of little consequence to me. I can clearly see what happened in this test (which is impressive), and coupling that with all the other good things I've seen about MagnaCut is why I said Magnacut MIGHT be the bee's knees. We'll only know for sure once it's readily available and thoroughly real-world tested. This test certainly went well.
Sal said the Magnacut Mule Team average hardness was 62.6 HRC, so you're right on. Great test.
I tried to link my source but then my comment gets deleted. It's in the Spyderco Mule Team forum titled, "Magnacut Mule Team Rc" by Sal.
…not just rope cutting, but rope and wood board test 😄 …and jerking arm endurance test, well done mate! I’d love to have a fixed and folder in this sweet steel!
You should paracord wrap those bad boys
400 knife tests is enough to go around the world 7 times! :>)
Yeah, science!!!!
Thanks for the info. I just used your steel test in a public speaking class!
Thanks for sharing Pete. I really enjoy your tests.
Thanks for sacrificing your arm for the good of the collective knife knerds. Now we'll be able to reference Dr Larrin for metallurgical metaphor and you for accelerated actuals.
I would gladly have 3D printed you some scales. Let me know if you would like some. Thanks for the Magna cut testing.
A trick to help against blisters if u put a piece of tape beneath the glove a truck runners use
What do you do with all the cut rope? Should cast it in resin and make some handles for those knives
Sell tinder kits under his Utube name
Great to see another episode Pete glad you're doing well thanks for the review it'd be great to pick up some magna cut it seems to do everything well now if the price will come down that would be awesome.
Don’t hold your breath! With Brandon in the picture, prices will likely rise and availability decline.
@@waltv6385 ouch!
Hey Pete we see you doing the Michael Jackson impersonation with the one glove where's the sparkles and the sequins?
Would brickie approve of glitter being involved in this process?
Thanks again for your devotion Pete to the knife steel nerds in all of us!
It's also good to see Larrin's formula being adopted by the knife gangster industry 😎 aloha
Your pain, our pleasure. Thank you.
G'day Pete, the workshop is look'n good mate !!!. Plenty of room to swing a cat, hehe.
As a stainless lover, the Magnacut really appeals. I expect pricey though, especially inclusive of spidey tax. I must say their leaf shaped blades are far more attractive and practical IMO. It will be interesting to see how you go with sharpening the stuff and the difference it makes in performance. Cheers Duke.
I am going to share it and come back! Wait a second!!!
really nice cut test demo with some truly amazing results. Awesome work as always Pete. Im not that big of a steel freak, but its hard to not get excited about Magnacut with its properties and performance that defy all logic. I absolutely want a small fxed blade in it for EDC. Do let me know if there is a maker you recommend for that. Cheers mate.
That was a good one, sure your hands & shoulders are tired by now. I want to see more with the 17 degree, mirror finish... just don't injure your self with too much, too soon
amazing stuff we will have to get that magnacut for sure, willing to see next video
Wow! Thanks for doing this for us.
Good test can’t wait to see what it does with your edge.
I love your videos man. Can you do a cut test on the new Overland by TJ Schwarz?
For Pete's sake (heh) wrap those handles with something before the next test. Duct tape. Burlap and zip ties. Anything. The community needs you alive.
You absolute bloody masochist haha :) Love your dedication, Pete!
Great test also I noticed bricky in the background, you know I had to get the phone case and a T-shirt representing in south Florida
Yes definitely a sickness if you couldn't put off that marathon of repetitive motion. I & thousands appreciate your sharing this with us. Get back to chickens & cooking as soon as you get enough results to satisfy your obsession.
Cant wait. Strong work man.
Now I want a magna-cut blade for my endura.
I would love to see you try hogue’s magnacut deka to see how it compares
if you posted this tomorrow it would've been epic.
2 magnacut mules on 2/2/22
Id be very excited to pick up a para 3 in this if they ever release one.
Waiting for my pg mako in magnacut.. rumor is there will be a manix salt with magnacut.. I'll be buying that ASAP as an avid kayak fisherman.
When will magnacut really hit the market 🔪⚔️🗡️
Great progression!
I'd like a t-shirt with a Bricky motive saying "Shut up & knife!".😃😃😃
*thanks for all the hard work!*
Im pretty sure the hrc is 62-63 and can vary with one point of hrc that makes a difference as triple b pointed out
To the infinity and beyond :D
Thanks Pete!!
It appears moreso like you wanted it to stop, can't blame you at that amount of cuts
You need a motorized feeder to give your left hand a break. 😎
Wondering if you would consider a vintage knife series cut test. I was thinking the Buck 2 or 3 dot which was the last year they used the better Bos 440C steel. I've been carrying a 3 dot for years now and love it and they can be had for $40 still everywhere in prime condition. Also the Schrade Old timer 165 or the Schrade Old Timer 152 Sharpfinger or 150T (I believe in 1095). I was recently gifted a 1984 152 Sharpfinger and it is the sharpest blade I have now, insanely sharp to the touch!
Great results!
Great steel and designed for cutlery. I am keen to buy a fixed blade knife down the track when some other company makes a more practical shape. Spyderco blade shape in general are suited for rescue situations so not practical.
I think they said they were aiming for 62-63
I show up for the edge tests .. but I stay for the prog rock.
Well I feel bad for that poor shoulder this could end up turning you into a bit of a one sided monster haha. Then again you could end up on the arm wrestling scene. 😉 thanking you very kindly for this information my arm started aching just watching 🥴 stay safe and healthy Pete have a absolutely beautiful day 😘👍🏼
I'd love to get one of these Magnacut Mules, to build "the One" knife, but after a lot of searching, they're almost impossible to find (atm), here in England..
Put a moist towel under your cutting board. It's keep it from moving.
I’ve been waiting for this 🙂
my mule came dull AF. it was my 1st mule and almost seemed like it was left dull on purpose to put our own edges on them but apparently not
2 WEEKS = 6 MONTHS? While we recgonize the the best steels produce the worst pain aversion, we still hope to see how your 17deg polished edge compares to the Golden edge...
Hey Pete,
Have you gotten around to doing the KME edge tests?
Thanks!
Isn't this almost the same results as the S90V mules ? 😲
With much more toughness and corrosion resistance ? 😲
Better shirt haha keep going man as always I'm just trolling alittle!
SOOOO THAT IS WHAT THE MULE TEAM KNIVES ARE FOR EHHH!?!?!? Sheesh and here I thought all this time they were specifically made for everyone who is able to buy them directly from spyderco to snag up as many as they're able to get then relist them on Ebay for 5 times the original price 🤷♂️🤔 who would've thought the people buying them were actually supposed to do testing on them and then report their results!
magnacut vs vanax? best of the super steels
The clap is equal to 200 cuts.
Magnacut is alien technology.
No music in your Workshop? I would die to death
Did the steel make the cut?!?🤣🤣🤣
No body is doing magnacut at more than 60-62 besides spyderco.
When you’re deciding on music for these videos do you think “Could this have been used in a Lethal Weapon movie?” Yes = Good to go
Pretty sure it's usually Final Fantasy music.
