- With the arrival of our latest project car, an F90 M5 we've dubbed 'Lycan', it's time to say goodbye to our F10 M5.
Many of you will be familiar with this car, having owned it for 4 years, but most of it was before we started producing project car videos. It's been a great car, and in this video Imran reminisces about his time owning and modifying the car, and the many triumphs it achieved, not only in power and top speed, but also in practicality and family duties.
We also consider if the F90 M5 is really worth the money over a good F10 M5, as we're sure many of you own one, and who doesn't want the latest new shiny thing!

Oddly enough, more I see the older gen' m5, the more I seem to like it. Anyone having similar thoughts?

Tell you what, the more I see the new m5 the more bland it appears. It's crazy but in dark colors the new m5 just looks like a new 5 series.

I had an F10 M5 year 2015 and I changed it for an F90, I configured it especially with ceramic brakes, seats with massager, Bang & Olufsen sound and other extras, I ordered it white and with a carbon fiber roof, but when it arrived and I was going to deliver, seeing it I did not like! The wheels, the spoilers and the lines were not what I expected. It was not the same as with the F10, where I admired every inch of its design lines. Finally I returned it, I did not buy it and I changed it for a black 750i with wheels. I miss my M5 F10 for me, much more beautiful than the F90!

Nice video. The F10 M5 is the only real spiritual successor to the E39 M5. I had the E39 M5 for over 14 years and moved to a manual F10 M5 and I am in love with it. I never thought any M5 could be on par or match my much loved E39 M5. Reliability has been the same experience as yours, rock solid and no issues.
Great to hear Larry! The E39 M5 is an iconic car at this point, and it makes sense that the F10 is the spiritual successor as they both have a V8. The added turbos are a nice little bonus too 😉

very similar to me. I had an E39 M5 for 8 years and then changed to a F10 M5 which I have had for 4 years now. Agree with everything in this video.

Loving my F10 awesome car all around and great value. Raced my friends new F90 and went toe to toe for a fraction of the price. Going to enjoy my F10 for 2-3 years and see how the F90 depreciates.

Great comparison - when I saw it was Imran, knew his comments would be valuable. I’m a fan of the understated appearance of the stock cars, especially when coupled with some subtle modifications

Great review. I like the fact that you used the car for everything. My beloved e46 330ci was totaled 2 weeks ago and I’m currently looking at the e39 M5. However, the looks and value ($43 to $49K in the U.S.) of the F10 M5 are moving it to the top of the list. Its beginning to look like the perfect garage mate for my wife’s F30 335i Msport!
Get the E39. The N63 engine and all its variants are deeply flawed. Do the research, decide for your self.

Would like to hear your thoughts on the ability of the stock rods and transmission to handle more torque with future tuning. Any reassurance?
Awesome video as always . I have my f10 m5 2013 for 2 months now. Used it as a daily. It has 136 000km . It run perfectly so far . No oil consumption or comments. Thank you for encouraging me Imraan. Just curious why the usa videos show it as unreliable .

How do they compare on rolling performance once you’ve got traction (stock vs stock) ?

Considering getting aaln F10 M5. Want to know if the engine and dct can reliably handle about 580-600tq? Want to do a downpipe and tune.....nothing ultra crazy.....not going to dragstrip or anything.

Totally concur Imran. I sold my F10 as lack of traction was an issue I couldn't live with plus the interior was nothing special to look at (it is comfortable,well built and good quality materials, just lacks piazzas!)

James Templeman i have no issues with traction ps4s rocks! And a lot depends on type of tune you got too!

Quick question, given your experience how many f10 get the bearing problem? A lot of people lately are getting caught with a hole in the block from it, without any rhyme or reason
I bought MPS4s for my M5 and the grip is pretty amazing. The traction is still not adequate in first and second though.
Yeah only grips fully in 3rd with these tyres.
I’ve been very close over the years of getting an F10 M5 , but never made the jump as I used to own a E60 M5 and thought it was one of the best cars I’ve owned!
Looking at the F90 M5 I think it has more lines which follows the new generation , I think you said the F10 M5 was a bit dated , but correct in saying it’s been out for many years !

Thanks Neil! The F10 M5 is an excellent car, especially in Comp Pack form. If you're still considering it I'd try and get a test drive in a comp pack M6 GC, the mix of luxury and performance is fantastic.

Imran's is a '13 and therefore pre LCI M5. There were a few cosmetic changes with the '14 model.

Great video, where would the feel of the Audi s6 and potential of the s6 compare to the f10 and f90 M5 in your experience?
I find the Audi S6 and RS6 dull in comparison. Design of the cars and interiors are great but they lack something in dynamics for me.
Bought my F10 in March and I agree it’s a perfect all rounder, can have my daughter in the back in her car seat then when I’m on my own it’s an animal with not a lot beating me! I’m 24 so I’m getting used to the car and power for about 6 months then I will be in touch for some work at Evolve!
Incredible value for money and wise to get used to the power as standard before going for more. Once tuned they can definitely bite back if you don’t respect them.

Looking back at this and in my opinion the F10 is the better looking even till this day, so much road presents.

How is the gearbox holding up the stage 1? Isn‘t it already at the max. amount of torque already with the stock map?
On the F90 M5? Deep in to Stage 2 tuning now and the gearbox is fine

Have you had issues with rod bearing? Do you recommend to replace it with king rod bearing as a prevention measure or just leave it stock

They are not flat plane crank, they just have a different firing order to what you may associate with ‘V8’ as in a traditional American engine.
F90 M5 sounds very lumpy V8 at idle

Whats average consumption on daily runs and maintenance costs.. looking to buy m6gc ,
Can speak from only mine and a friends experience. very reliable car tuned or stock. avg city driving i get 11.5L/100km while on highway ive done 7.5L/100km. Great car def get it if you can. You wont ever regret that purchase.
Very impressive car is the F90. Tops the F10 in a alot of ways in tech, interior, and all wheel! But when it comes to swag, the F10 body style, especially when you add the front lip, rear spoiler and defuser, and the right set of wheels and tires, hands down the F10 is the better body style!

There is nothing more beautiful and soo manly like the F10 M Sport/M5 design! Its just perfect in all around 360 degrees! What a true BMW should look like.
Now all newer BMW are not distinct and not that special looking like the F10 is, and u can't tell they're a BMW unless u get really close to it and see the badge. Yet on the F10 you know its a BMW right away the moment u spot it from far away! ,,--- FACTS...

Does the F90 look like an 'M' car enough to You? I.e. are the wheel arches less flared out and does it look more like a normal M-sport more than previous models?

@@EvolveAutomotive Yes, both 2012 mod. Sold the first one and regreted it, so now I am waiting for the next. The g-series was considered, but a bit high prices right now.

Thanks for watching! The M6 interior (and in theory upcoming M8) will always be a little nicer than the M5 as it's aimed at a more luxury market, and has a higher starting price.
We'll see if any issues start to appear as they get to higher mileage/age, but certainly a well looked after one seems to be pretty reliable in our experience.
Good point - the m6 interior has really spoiled me as the other M's just dont feel as luxurious inside (a requirement for me) But yeah so far so good, i've got a stage one tune and my m6 is at 53k miles right now, stock clutches! Keep up the great vids!

Personally, I still think the F10 is the better looking body style! I've loved the F10 body in the 535 Msport and M5 both! The E60 body didn't turn me over either! When I started to like it, the F10 body blew the doors off of it! I might hear some flack from E60 lovers on that one! Lol

It’s part of the model code, and more recently sort of distinguishes what generation it is.
Only thing that stopped me from buying one is the ones we get in the USA aren’t that good on reliability. And all the cars have 2-4 owners which is never a good sign

I've had my F10 M5 for a little over a year now and love it. If I was buying a dedicated weekend b-roads car, I'm sure I'd have gotten something else, but when you need a DD that can tear it up and then take the wife and another couple (or the kids) out to a nice dinner, there's not much better. Not to mention that for the price, it's pretty ridiculous, as long as you do your homework on the particular car you're purchasing.
Handling fix is as easy as KW V3 coilovers and Dinan sways.
I'm never sure why people always applaud older cars, i mean, the F90 is distinctly more beautiful than the f10 by the clouds, i mean the f90 is just the best looking 5 series, ever.. I'm not going to talk about perfomance..

I bought an F10 M5 recently. I love it. It's stupidly fast already so I do wonder what the point is in adding even more power to a car that already cannot put its power down.

To be honest if owner has a 700bhp F10 competition pack I don’t think it’s worth jumping the bridge for the F90. The F10 still looks stunning and as for the F90 I feel it’s nearly 5 years late as Mercedes had released the 2014 E63s it was a game changer and even that E63 today would give the F90 a run for its money. In the F90 all your paying for is Tech..
