BMW M5 F10 | Get Your Warranty Ready

- We review the 2012 BMW F10 M5 supplied by our viewer Jason. This generation M5 ditched the lovely NA V10 in favour of a twin-turbo V8 making roughly 560HP. When new this M5 was around $100k. But after 6 short years, prices have sunk to around 37k which make this an interesting purchase for those who want to live dangerously. With prices so low many would consider skipping the Porsche, Mustangs and Camaros for this 4 door option, we look and see if it's worth it. We look at the good and the bad of this poor man's supercar.

Had F10 M5 for 3 yrs. It was troublesome and luckily I had extended warranty. Some issues: Coolant leaks x 3 ,condenser, charge coolers defective x 3,faulty fender cams, ignition coil issues, herky jerky DCT was never fixed but they tried, front suspension clunk x 2, total shop times over a month. This car is fast but dangerous as hell because the rear tires would spin at almost any speed. My 10th and last BMW M car was dare I say fast but unreliable.
That's actually not all that bad for an M5.
This shit is why I bought the 4 pot diesel. Beyond normal maintenance, all I've had to do so far is toss in a pound of refrigerant every couple of years. Could be the Schrader valves, could be the evaporator -- it's slow enough that I don't care to diagnose.
Speaking of slow, sure, the car accelerates like a Camry. But put it in the twisties and that BMW chassis comes alive. I've pulled full-on Miata lateral Gs hooning it through California forests.
And that, ladies and gentlemen is why these cars are called money pits.
LOVELY cars but big but spend money like pissing DOWN the toilet hole ,,
The car is not dangerous. You just don’t know how to drive . Go buy a Prius.
Just like to say I have had my 2014 model for 11 months, no issues whatsoever. It had a major service when I had it and no oil has been added since. People normally just post up issues with their car but I wanted to balance it with my positive experience of my car.
How is it now
@@JAY-wl6qq In the end I sold it after 22 months and had no oil or battery issues. Only one issue which was to the iDrive display (lines on screen), replaced under warranty and the screen is common to other 5 series so not a M5 fault. Only reason to sell the car was to buy a 4 year old Cayman 718.

I have had my 2014 F10 M5 for 72 000km. She is an absolute beast and apart from shredding rear tyres she has been rock solid. The only issues have been new battery at 55 000km, new discs and pads 60 000km, replace coolant lines by turbos and front right wheel bearing 70 000km. Other than that she puts a smile on my face every day! I extended the motorplan for 7 years/ 100 000km so all was fixed under warranty.
gareth brown how much was your extended warranty
Agreed the only glitch for me is the replacement of the cooling line to the turbo. The thing has never let us down and such a total enjoyment. Materials and build quality are top rated too. Definitely lots of bangs for the buck especially if you got a used non abused one. The M engine is not typical problematic regular BMW.
You still have this beast?
@@brekkottchapman3569 unfortunately not I sold her 2 months back because of escalating fuel costs. No regrets though. Very special machine

Never had any problems with my F10 M5,
No oil consumption, no problems with the battery, just had it sitting for 3 months and It started right up, not even a low battery warning !!
Car now has almost 30k miles on it and is also tuned.
But I do recommend to everyone getting one used to get an extended warranty on it !!
agreed no problems on mine after 72 000km
I think the one they tested is a pre LCI. I have a 2015 LCI with 72k miles on it and never had any issues.
Yeah, actually managed to total mine last week, shot off a cliff and rolled like 10 times, lucky to be alive, props to bmw for making safe cars

My 2014 F10 M5 beside some minor issues such as leaky inter cool .. line and AC needed to be recharged at 40k miles so far has been having zero problem with any drivetrain components. Steering wheel noise over bumps is another annoying issue at random. Other than that a very fun, exciting, confident car to cruise especially for long distance trips. Took mime across Dead Valley California and Las Vegas in the summer heat with no issues. Never lost a challenge with street idiots when they parked next to an M5. Still loving it a lot.

i also have an f10 m5 and alot of those problems happen on the PRE LCI model. I burn a little bit of oil but not much just coils and spark plugs other than that i love this car.i have 112k miles on it and running strong.
Steve FOX Hi Steve, what does LCI mean? I am currently in the market for an F10 m5 and trying to gather as much info ahead of time. Would love to chat with you about your ownership experience
Had my 2014 LCI M5 for 4yrs and done 30,000 miles in it. The only problem I have had is the air conditioning condenser replaced when I first got it, (a known 5 series issue).
The car has not had any of the issues you raise. It represents amazing value second hand and plays the role of luxurious daily driver and ridiculous hyper saloon. I never worry about it not starting or an engine light coming on, because nothing ever goes wrong with it. It'll even do 30mpg on the motorway, and the high speed acceleration is insane. Equivalent AMG mercedes and Audi's are quite a lot more expensive and don't really offer anything extra for the money (you could argue the sound bit and traction in the case of the Audi).
Bought one 13 months ago, still got it and no oil or battery issues. Love it to bits.

Loved the intro music. Well done Mr. Goose!
I appreciate this review as i was actively looking into the f10 M5. I’d love to see your honest opinion on the F80 M3’s.
Seems like they are more reliable than the E90 and the F10 which are both on my list.
Having owned both a 2013 M5 and a 2014 M5 with competition package and carbon ceramic brakes they are almost completely different vehicles. I owned the 2013 for about a year I upgrade the roll bars to the competition ones and it helped a little but the steering sucked. They made it so much better in the 2014 M5 with competition and carbon ceramic brakes. I have owned the 2014 for almost 2 years now and can say its like a different vehicle. I have had only 2 issues first the rear axle broke that wasn't fun but AAA helped out and even though I was in the middle of nowhere I was only stranded for a little over an hour. The second issue was the AC condenser had a leak so my AC didn't work. Both issues were paid mostly by the aftermarket warranty which you would be stupid not to get one no matter the cost. In both of the M5's I owned I have never had a check engine light and as for oil consumption the first one used a quart every 2k-2.5k miles and the second one maybe every 4k miles. Never had a battery issue never had a check engine light and I drive the things like I stole them. Hence the broken axle. The F10 M5 is far from perfect, but you aren't really doing it justice by not testing the best version of it which is the competition package with carbon ceramic brakes.
you made my day with this video. a car maker doesn't make crappy cars until a reviewer is afraid of driving it because it breaks easily.
Another great video... really do enjoy this channel... 👍🏽
Had my ‘14 plate LCI in the UK for 18 months and 25k miles (now at 55k). Zero oil consumption, ever. Has an increased battery capacity from factory so can leave for weeks with no issue. Has a different sound symposer so don’t get that fake noise none sense. Had a new transmission within 5k miles under warranty replaced with a different part code, no further issues. Had a comfort access door handle replaced, and that’s it. No check engine lights, no squeaks or rattles. Changed tyres to Michelin PS4S for radical improvement in the wet. Can do big miles, cross continents and see over 25mpg no problem day to day. Enjoy it for itself in the beautiful Welsh valleys when I can. It’s not all doom and gloom you know.
A Camaro ZL1 would eat this thing alive in every performance metric, be infinitely more reliable, and costs about $40k less (new) - oh but I know, it doesn't have the "badge" all the "I'm richer than you" little asshat M boys want. I loathe most BMW owners, 90% fit the sterotype perfectly

Thank you for showing the arrows when describing the controll armes around 5:50 . I really appreciate it. Please keep it standard with the reviews
I've had a 2013 M5 for 3 years now and fortunately, I have not had any significant problems. I also use JB4 and boost 4lbs over stock for around 600hp. It does eat a quart of oil about every 1,000 miles. I've replaced maybe 10 coil packs and 5 spark plugs outside or a change of all of them. At 100,000 I replaced the air conditioner pump. I've replaced 3 of the rubber short hoses for the liquid inner-cooler. The coil packs are about $24. My 335 and my x3 also go through coil packs, not really a big deal. I have 110,000 miles on it now and I've been pretty impressed.
I have not had super-car problems, knock on wood. Any car aside from a Toyota or Honda would likely need as much.
My x3 has 130,000 and runs like a champ. I like BMWs, I wouldn't call them reliable, but they;ve had the 4.4 for years now.
Well done with another solid review!

I never thought about this car like that. It really is Germany's Charger Hellcat.
My 2012 M5 has the same oil consumption issues. I add about 1 liter every 1.5 to 2.5 months. But so long as I keep feeding it, it seems to be happy. I think a third party warranty is a must for peace of mind.
GREAT video!

When people buy a BMW their perspective regarding reliability changes. Instead of thinking “200k miles with no serious problems” is reliable you think “2000 miles with no problems” is reliable. It happened to me, then I bought a Nissan and I’ve realize how catastrophically unreliable and expensive the BMW was. However, it did drive great. Also I don’t think other Germans are less expensive and reliable, I know for damn sure Audi is not.
"Get your warranty ready" needs to be the slogan for German cars
No shit
JDM and domestic all the way.

So many owner reviews seem so much more positive than this. I think this particular one is a real lemon that had a haaard life. LCI f10s are reportedly very reliable and much sharper to drive.
No it's because no other reviewers mention actual reliability, this car didn't break on them, it's that the f10s are known to be problematic
I have a f10 M5 competition and it`s a brutal car. Not consuming a drip of oil. Over 300km/h best comfort at high speeds on autobahn You can`t get more car for the money
E70 X5 M is more car and cheaper. Also handles better than the M5. Only in a straight line will an F10 M5 win.
X5 is Only better to go to Markets like publix and walmart for excessive shopping
@@johnrichter2096 There's a reason nobody likes the F10. It has too much power for what it is. The X5 M can actually brake and corner due to its massive brakes, tires, and awd. If yoi don't believe me, look at any curcuit where they timed both. The X5 is always faster unless it's only straights.
I am only interested in cars that goes over 300 km/h

Have been currently searching for an F10 M5 - S63TU though and looking forward to owning one! Great video as always :)
Just incase anyone out there was thinking "maybe the 4 cylinder 2.0 Turbo is more reliable" I can confirm that it has plenty of weaknesses. At 70,000 miles I just replaced, timing chain, timing chain guides, and oil pump. Not to mention steering column bearing, and a couple front suspension components. BMW made good NA strait 6 cylinder engines, everything they make that has turbos is TOTALLY UNRELIABLE.
Antoine Pageau Just did the chains too at 65k under warranty. BMW recommended I changed oil pump too, while they were in there. It was $600. Did yours fail and did it fall under warranty?
Remember the e46 had engine problems too. nothing they make is reliable.
The instant they introduced variable valve timing, reliability flew out the window.
But nearly every (sub-7-series)car before that was actually reasonable in terms of maintenance.
japanwatchconnection Yes the N20 has timing chain and oil pump issue. My chain failed, pump didn’t, but they suggested I replace it at my own cost.
Wiseguy724 not so much. My 328 has 216,000 miles doesn’t burn or leak a drop of oil
I've always felt BMWs develop significant BSRs earlier on than I'd like, given the quality of their materials and cost, but that's also (perceptually) a side-effect of a quiet cabin.
Bsr??
@@harveymorgan1749 buzz/squeaks/rattles- an industry term for noise created by the interaction f parts contacting one another or even inherent within the part. My experience is that BMW has premature bsr issues in the hvac vents and along the ip, A-pillar and ip cover. At least for the price/quality

Awesome review guys, I'm an owner of an e92 M3 2011, 49k miles. And I've become a bit of a BMW fan. I've been eyeballing this car for a few years since its definitely more affordable than it once was. Will definitely take everything in consideration in buying this car.
The oil consumption, failing chains, leaky gaskets and hoses was resulted in the vehicle's running very high thermal parameters, we're talking at normal operating temperature 110*C (230*F) for water, around 120-130*C (248-266*F) of oil temperature and the coolant system pressure runs at 2.0 Bar (29 psi) to compensate the higher coolant temperature. (A normal engine is about 90*C (194*F) for water, 100*C (212*f)oil and 1-1.4 bar (14-20 PSI) for coolant pressure) If you were to run this parameters into a normal engine you'll start having problems soon let alone I can't imagine what are the thermals when you take it on a full day of track it be close to meltdown . I think this engine can be more reliable if we lowered its thermal and coolant pressure operation by installing cooler opening thermostat, oil thermostat bypass and a lower pressure coolant cap.
this is true for pretty much all german engine design. the hotter they run the more thermal efficient they believe it is. problem is most people dont drive their car under lab condition, in real life they use just as much gas as regular engine designs. that why good old cast iron engine last over time, plastic parts are usually only tested for 1000 heat cycles. hence why newer engine break so much sooner than older ones with more solid metal parts
Part of the reason the run hotter is for emissions reasons
@@Dunkaroos248Yeah BMW took emissions way more serious and honest than VW. Their older diesels are still polluting, but rarely a black cloud of smoke like in VW TDI.
F10s look gorgeous
I'm trying to see it, but I just can't.

Best car show on RUclips. No question about it. The quality is way better than what the subscriber numbers show.
I've got an M6 with the same S63TU motor at 55K miles with Dinan stage 2 setup. It's been fantastic. Turbo coolant tubes did leak once but nothing else. It beats motorcycles all the time. GXR1000 and Harley owners HATE on it haha.
