I don't think Blizzard's upscale was bad. The cinematic was grainy cuz it left more to the imagination and therefore we imagined more detail. The upscale takes away all of the imagined detail and makes it look worse tbh. Blizzard should have just remade the cinematic, Blizzard makes such good cinematics.
It's amazing when after all of these years, this ending still gives me the chills and sends me right back on the feelz train I received when I was so young. I miss the old blizzard, amazing job BTW!
The zoom out where you see Arthas sitting on The Frozen Throne gives me chills to this day. Warcraft 3 and the build up to this scene plus WoW vanilla through WotLK were Blizzard at it's finest. Back when they could still tell a story. Best villain of the franchise too in my opinion, precisely because in spite of all his power whether as Paladin or Lich King. He got to where he was precisely because of being a human with human faults.
Even his death was fitting, a human death, afraid, understanding what he had done. He fall because of his humanity and die as a human but now they made the expansion for wow and changed everything
I miss Ner'zhul. People didn't seem to realize, but the OG Lich King was actually subtle. The only non undead/demon character who knew about him was Illidan, and only after he was manipulated. He was the final key to defeating the Legion, by manipulating Illidan to remove the skull of Gul'dan, and (more importantly) kill Tichondrious, who was the most paranoid and intelligent of the Dreadlords. From there he subtly sabotaged the Legion's efforts through their own minions, giving the other races a chance on Mount Hyjal. He even pulled out of Kalimdor after the Legion's defeat because he had no interest over there, leaving the Night Elves and Orcs no real reason to care about the undead after their victory. In TFT he was mostly just trying to hold his forces together as Kil'jaeden (through Illidan) continued to try and kill him. Arthas was his ace in the hole and freedom (Again, subtly. Nobody knew or cared about Arthas outside of the undead cast). In WotLK he just becomes a big evil bad guy who wants to kill all life... because reasons... And now it's revealed that it wasn't Arthas or Ner'zhul all along, and just some new big evil bad guy who wants to kill all life... WoW's story isn't just bad, it's lame. I doubt we'll see Ner'zhul again, maybe a cameo at best. He definitely won't be doing anything important if he ever does show up.
Well he probably wanted some vengeance in wrath as he took his time to get his force back but yeah the jailer is Just Dumb lore retcon because you need to sell content
he didnt entirely "forsake" Kalimdor. He has a lich doing some nasty magic with a old god and the most widespread race of the barrens at the time (quilboar). I agree tho Ner'zhul is a very good character, and the Illidan bits shows he isn't infaillible either.

And this is the heart of my critique. Lich King Arthas doesn't act like Arthas or Ner'zhul, at least in their portrayals in WC3. I'm sure back then they purposefully cut corners and leave some parts "less polished" because in the final render, the low res actually made that parts actually looked a bit realistic because it blends with the surrounding. Still looks good. Seeing the closeup details like in 1:19 really made me appreciate how this was made in 2003.

Don't get me wrong, I really do love WoW up to Wrath of the Lich King, and after that the rest of the expansions are pretty decent aswell (especially the music and art), but to me WoW as a game is basically fanfiction with self-insert characters (the player controlled characters) about a time that COULD have been, if Arthas didn't become the Lich King and eventually conquered the world.
The upscale is far more crisp but oversharpened and it did muddy a lot of granularity in the background. Pros and cons. This cinematic is one of the saddest things now because it really was the end of an era. My whole WC3 community broke up after WoW, going to different servers to play. And Blizz did Arthas very dirty after Wrath of the Lich King. Things will never be the same, and I'll always wonder what could have been.
I was kinda pissed off when they killed of Arthas in WoW instead of a WC3 sequel but with the way Blizzard is going nowadays I don't really give a dren about WC4.

I hate when Blizzard released the Shadowland CG, I know something is off, and it's all about aesthetics and atmosphere. I hate when I see Sylvanas fight Bolvar my first reaction is "wow she's like magically lvl up to beat the Lich King, she capped". I hate nowadays you need to pull out a fancy fight scene to show how your product is attractive. Our world is becoming shitter every second, and good times never last.

Tbh, upscaled it shows the lack of detail in the original, and emphasizes it - introduces aliasing in places, lack of detail in textures is more apparent (icicles, arthas's armour when he's climbing the stairs, etc.)

The upscaled shot of Arthas on the throne looks pretty untextured. I guess keeping it blurred benefited this cinematic after all.
