Thanks for the video, I have had this same car since it had 84,000 km. Now it has 365000. I've had the timing belt changed twice, but I think I may try it myself next time.

Good job as always so there is no other way to do the job unless you got to have the timing tool ah. cheeeeeers

I have done it without. You can use a drill bit for the top pin and line up the mark on the crank sprocket to the left side of the dowel hole in the lower housing. Mark it before removal and put it back in the same place. Holding fixture on the crank just makes it easier. Thanks for watching...

@@ahmedston2807 they are pretty decent, good on fuel, make sure thebtiming belt is done around 80,000 miles or 120k.

ok video, only left out the important parts (timing marks and setting the timing). guessing the gray thing with mark on it is the tool? but thanks for posting . ive owned this same make model car since new and ill tell you, its a pile of crap. started with water (lake) under the pass. side carpet from front to back. always wondered why the transmission was shifting while idle at a light. because the trans control unit was under water. pass. cv axle went at 35k , driver side cv axle went at 40k. car wont start if its below 20 degrees. have to crank the crap out of it. mind u this was when the car was new. needed to have a winter kit installed , if there is such a thing ive never found one. cant even find a dipstick heater for this car. every fluid for this car is special, only dealer or online. oil change cost around 75-100 bucks if u do it yourself. cant check the trans fluid level/ add fluid. thats just to name a few problems. pass. rear tail light filled with water for some reason. and the list goes on and on. only reason i still have this car is, i dont have 50k to buy a new car. vw shouldnt be allowed to sell cars in u.s. period

The Germans are still mad about the war... Most TDIs here have oil pan heaters for cold starts here. They stick on the bottom of the oil pan and are pretty effective.

Wow this is a salty post. I could barely be considered a DIY mechanic and have less to complain about this car, even when doing all my own work. Here's some tips. Clean out your sunroof drains, that way it doesn't flood the inside of the car. Don't crank the wheel all the way left or right, not sure in how else in the world you trashed both CVs by 40k. Get a frostheater (they've been around a long time), it warms up your coolant during the winter and makes starting in sub zero temps a breeze, or maybe you should've paid attention to the recalls that upgraded the glowplugs and gotten that issue solved for free. Mine without the frostheater has started in negative temps without much issue. Do you cycle your glowplugs before starting in the winter? I would hope so because that diesel 101. I spend about $40 (in today's inflation prices) on my oil changes, maybe spend about 30 min-hour doing them in my driveway. And I'm using top quality oil with an OEM quality filter. What are you buying that adds up to $80?? The water in the tailight could happen on any car, you likely cracked it somehow. That's just a dumb one.
Could VW have made a better car? Maybe. But these are still amazing cars that I personally have seen go way above and beyond 250k miles with a little extra TLC.

The crank tool is the wrong one…it never must be oval….u clearly can see that the tooth are not properly fitted

I'm not sure what you are referring to but it worked just fine. I've used it on multiple jobs with no issues. Possibly it was the angle of the camera.

@@PhillipBailey There are 2 versions…one is a little bit oval and when you use the wrong one it does not perfectly fit.
