Amazing step by step guide. I completed by first ever cambelt change on a VW Golf 2.0TDI (BKD 140) after it jumped a couple of teeth, caused by a failing cambelt tensioner. It took me 5hrs and started first time.
5 hours for your first go aint bad, my first timing belt about oh 22 years ago (not a mechanic btw), took me from 4pm friday night to 9pm sunday evening, instructions never were my thing, as a result it went to a garage afterwards and the repair bill for missing the timing was a propper sting, i followed instructions after that, the garage that fixed her give me a Hayes workshop manual for her!
To change the screw from the tension roller of the timing belt, must the blocking paste be put on the thread that is screwed into the engine block? The screw came in the box without the locking paste on it. And when tightening it in the engine block, do you need a torque wrench or is it tightened by hand? The other screw from the small roller has the blue blocking paste on it.
Mine does the exact same rattle on start up. I was wondering what it could be. Did you end up sorting the dual mass flywheel? Thankyou for this video too
@@diydaly . My JETTA BKD does this also. So you have to replace both dual mass flywheel and clutch in the DSG? EXPENSIVE and time consuming ? What if you left this noise longer?
I can see both your intake & exhaust cams adjustmens are advanced far to the right.m does this car have a good mpg? Curious as I am dealing with a smoky bmn engine.
Not necessarily , if they are leaking think it the time to do them though , I’ve not done and guides for the replacement on this engine , only the crank seal for the later engine is on the channel 👍
@@diydaly thanks alot for the reply. Good to know as long as the pins are in the cam cogs themselves have movement. Do you have to keep the cam pins in and locked to undo the cogs to replace the cam seals? Ordered all the bits just wondering if it's wise to replace the seals whilst in there.. those 90° torque wrenches are expensive hey can we get away with just the torque setting or FT SPEC?🤣
@@gavinfisher8049 tbh I can't remember the last time I did any, you should really hold them with a pulley holding tool to undo the centre bolt but id think it will be ok if not, if there not leaking I dont think id bother, never really had much both with the cambshaft seals, the crank seal would be with doing 👍 I do like to torque the cams correctly but I have just done them with the buzz gin before 👍 , you can just get a cheap angle gauge rather thank angle torque wrench if need be
I never thought there was a cover by the crankshaft pulley. I can't believe my eyes. I guess when they remove it they forgot it. Incredible! My screws are not in good condition. I coudn't put them out. Any solution?
The lower engine mount looked like it gave some trouble? A bit concerning doing this job when the cams float whilst trying to get belt on. What if a belt has jumped one or 2 teeth just line up cam marks to top at 12 o clock?
Erm neh it’s not bad really , little bit tight but maybe looked worse on the video .. the cams are not as bad as you think .. it’s only the outer pulleys that are floating the pin is locking the main shaft still so you can’t go wrong .. the only reason for the floating pulleys is to give a nice even pull on the belt all round.. it’s making fitting the belt quite easy you need to remember to nip them back up! Any issues with belt timing etc and just simply just need to re align the pin holes
Do you ever change the studs, I've heard it's risky on these BKD engines as they can strip the thread in the block easily. Any advice would be great thanks.
yeah I always check them and replace if they look abit worn , mostly its when they haven't been toured correctly.. always worth changing if your got one
HI DIY DALY. I ordered the SKF DRIVE BELT TENSIONER VKM31023 . It's wise to replace this I'm told when changing all the other tensioners? Can this be fitted seperate to the timing belt kit? ( The drive belt TENSIONER May not arrive in time when my mechanic mate does the timing belt this week). Also the dual mass flywheel issue on start up.. is that a big job to replace and cause big issues if left too long?
The tightening pulley screwed off on my A3..while on highway. I just got it as my first car a month ago. I'm motivated to do everything myself, i got the valve cover off yesterday, today i wanna get the head out to assess the damages. Any tips? Anyhing i should be aware of? Thanks in advance guys

Is it possible that the timing belt is too tight even though the arrow is in the middle of the gap ? I can hear a whine between 1000 and 1500 rpm and to my research it is the timing belt. I don't know what I did wrong since the arrow is in the correct position. I used Gates powergrip.
If the tensioners set right it can’t be too tight , I’ve only once had a fault water pump that was noisy but it came after about 2 months.. have you taken the auxiliary belt off to check if the noise goes away? That will confirm if it’s on the timing belt side or not
@@diydaly I changed the timing belt 3 years ago but I never associated the noise to it, thought it was something related to the gearbox.
