In this video we did a timing belt job on a 2004 VW Passat 1.8t. the timing belt process it self will be the same for 2001.5-2005 vw passat and 2001-2005 audi a4(for the a4 the serp belt routing and pulleys will be different) just the difference in bumper removal...

As a mechanic myself, this is a good real life repair.. he knows what tools are required for the job and work at consistent speed
you prolly dont give a damn but does any of you know a way to log back into an Instagram account??
I somehow forgot the login password. I love any tips you can give me!
@Anders Bodie Instablaster ;)
@Chaim Esteban Thanks for your reply. I got to the site through google and I'm in the hacking process now.
I see it takes a while so I will reply here later when my account password hopefully is recovered.
@Chaim Esteban it did the trick and I actually got access to my account again. Im so happy!
Thank you so much you really help me out :D
@Anders Bodie No problem =)
not all average mechanic move that fast I'm really impressed
hey man! big thanks for making this video. i am 4 years in to my mechanic career. never have done a vw timing belt. your video made it so easy. id been so lost without it. Huge thanks and Keep it up!
Just goes to show ya how proper tools can make any job lightning fast great video!
I just finished this job on a 2003 VW Passat with a 1.8T engine and did it following your video. Because of it, the job was VERY straight forward. The only difference was the bumper support bolts on my car were T45 Torx instead of T30, so that set me back 20 minutes while I ran to the auto-parts store. Used break cleaner to clean up the gunk and used an oil filter tool with a piece of rubber as liner (bike inner tube) to hold the fan pulley in place. THANK YOU for taking the time to make and post this videos.
sorry for the confusion, i probably called it wrong in the video... the t45 is what should be there...
This is a preemptive thank you. I will be doing this soon for the first time and really appreciate your work both on the car and in sharing your knowledge.
Great video, keep it up ! I just did a valve seal replacement based on your previous videos on my 01' 225 Audi TT. THANK YOU !!
Had a leaky water pump that needed replacement, used this video along with some online forums to do the repair myself (along with my stepdads help), it was incredibly useful. I don’t have much experience with car maintenance, but this video was incredibly thorough and easy to follow. The total job took me about a day and a half which includes a lot of back and forth from the hardware store to pick up tools I didn’t own. Saved me about $500-$700, according to my mechanics estimate. Thanks for the video!
would you please put a list of all the tools you needed to pickup so i can do a 1 stop shop?
@@likealayup If you pay attention while watching the video, he tells you the name of each tool, size of socket, open ended wrench, torx and hex key you will need.
🤩 you’re the best mechanic 👨🔧 I never seen before thank you for sharing your knowledge and taking the time to showing us how to fix the mystery Wv
This video was instrumental in me changing a timing belt on a 1.8. Thank you!
I like how you show everything from start to finish this makes it easy to understand all that's involved I just subscribe to your channel keep the learning process coming and I'll use your links to buy tools
Great job. Your Skills are amazing.
Awesome video. Now you need to make one for the transverse engine, so I can do this haha. Good work!
awesome video bro I just finish my auto prgram now I'm taking diesel classes
You are a TRUE PROFESSIONAL GREAT JOB AND EXPLANATION
well done i have seen most of your videos ." keep them coming"
Doing this job at work, this video will save me from running to the repair manual to put the bumper into service mode. And to do the timing/tensioner. I'm a dealership vw tech
Wow man you the best I have ever seen yet I watched it til the end
you are awesome and very generous to share your skill. I appreciate so much. thank
.
Excellent instructional. Well Done!
Amazing video, super informative. Thanks!
80 minutes on this. Nicely done. All the while I used to think it was senseless for VW to make the 'service position' fiasco, but your video gives light to the brighter side of their madness.
How you pros and noobs manage to pull this job off with the radiator frame in the way, is beyond me. I just pull the entire face off for full exposure. No need to crawl under the car or lean over that frame back and forth. It's hard enough without the frame in the way. Good job for doing this so quick.
Very nice job. I wish to be as skilled as you one day.
Awesome video. Want to come to Florida and do another one? I can’t believe the shops down here charge for 8-9 hours of labor when it can be done in under 2
Great mechanic@
good vid, Iv pull the core as hole on a a6 and a passat by just removing headlights and fog lights to get access to the hidden bolts before. bought to do a belt on a 1.8t, so should only use a plastic water pump from the dealer.
Great video, very detailed and helpfull
Awesome job !!
Awesome video and great info. Thank you so much. Now I'm ready to tackle my chicks 02' Passat. 👍
Man what id do to have a guy like you up here in Milwaukee Wisconsin
amaizing!! perfect! thank you
very helpfull! thank you for posting!
Супер обожаю смотреть ваши видео!
Great video !
Words to live by... dont lose it... and dont brake it lol.
Also ill have to say you are lightning fast. You could probably do this in your sleep
When you work on german cars a lot then you will learn that : patient and knowledge , I took a week on a same b5 to replace the whole front suspension & wheel bearings and oil pan and the engine breather and thermostat and flush transmission fluid and finally replaced the headlights lol that's because I'm not a pro mechanic plus I have to wait for the parts . thanks for this professional video
Wow! Youre so good!
This dude is a straight up vibe
Excellent job, very helpful thank you for providing this.
I wonder if a piece of that water pump is still in the block reducing the flow of coolant lol. Probably broken down into bits by now though.
Most likely it is still there and t will not break down.... but the big enough pieces that might cause a problem will not fit though the passages out of water pump seat,
👍🏼 super ! Thanks a lot !
Have you ever used a vacuum coolant filler? They are very quick and leave almost no air. I used one on a 09 mercedes benz S550 to fill it and now i only fill collant using it
🌟🌟🌟🌟🌟, five stars good knowledge constant timing and easy to follow thanks for the help
That was fast!
What a nice video :)
Perfect explanation guy! If possible, I would like to your opinion... I also have a passat 1.8T 2002. This car is very clean and new, but the old propietary didn't care of the mechanic part it. I noticed that it has power loss and it's consuming a lot of gasoline like 17mpg and I can hear a lot of noise of the pre detonation. The hose from fuel regulator pressure to admission coletor is not so good, but I can't believe that's just it.
Do you have any idea what is happening?
I'll be very glad if you can help me.
Thank you !
Got another question. Ever hear of gauges ticking after shutting off the car and pulling keys out. It stops if I turn the accessories lights. Just unhooked the battery
Hi! I have the same passat but only year model 2003. I have to change the timing belt also because it's already too old. In this video you did't take off the thermostat. I read from some repair guide that thermostat needs to be taken off and placed back on in order to avoid excess air in the cooling system. I wouldn't want to take off it as it is located so cramped. Does one need to take it off or not? Thanks for this video, very helpful!
Wow!...you made it seems so easy...and it is not...thanks!
Very PROFESSIONAL!!!!!!!!!💪5💪💪💪💪💪💪
Man, you are an awesome mechanic. How do I get the radiator out? Trying to do this for my son`s car. Leaking so bad, can`t drive it far. thanks
Great repair video, thanks for sharing. Is it the same/similar for 2004 VW Passat 2.0 ?
Nice video tnx
Nice Job! How do you get all that extra coolant out of the filler funnel at the end of the video?
I wonder if I heft to remove all the belts and tensioner, because I already replaced them about 15,000 miles ago. My car is just over heating after about 10 miles or idle to long with my a/c on. I just want to replace the water pump only with out all the belt work.
You did that so quick your coffee was still hot when you got done👍
My personal record 35min while my buddy went to get beeeeer:)) on a A4 though....
@@EDGEMOTORS I'd pay you the book time and some beer anyday to work on my 03 passat just to get it back faster than what my local shop would do haha:)My car needs the same work done as you did on this job and i also need the egr system replaced
@@EDGEMOTORS unbelievable. Great job.
I adjusted the belt tensioner with the tool handle right past the cam gear bolt. After everything was done with the timing belt job, I drove the car a couple miles and checked my work. I took off my timing belt cover and noticed my hydraulic dampener is suppressed completely. it is a brand new oem hydraulic dampener. Is it a faulty part or is it suppose to be fully suppressed? and why would it do this.
Nice video but can't really see the work from camera angle. The one you did with the 2006-2008 audi A4 2.0T turbo wad great with eye ball view with camera
Hi,
What is the best timing belt kit according to your experiences? You mentioned factory water pump, but I found so many different ones in the web even with factory parts, or mixed. Where do you buy yours?
Thanks.
Is the process similar on 2004 audi A4 1.8t as well? Also when replacing the timing belt on 04 Audi A4 1.8t with 167k milage, is it worth replacing the cam and crank sproket rubber seals with the timing belt kit... nothing has ever been changed!
Finaly, a shop, that actually, cleans.. each part it touches..
would this be the same for a 2000 passat ?? with a atw 1.8t I know the water pump is not the same but the rest close??
I want to say BIG THANK YOU for this movie. Today I change all 3 belts, tensioners and water pump on my 1.8T AWT. It took me 4,5 hours. Great tutorial, you save me a lot of money. My 5 cents: It is much easier to spin the engine when you remove spark plugs, I did it since I was changing them anyway and I can see position of the piston all the way up.. What brand is this angle impact tool that you using(red with battery)
The tools are either ingersoll rand or mac tools
what is the name of the tool at 38:14 to pre tighten the tensioner
Hi. BTW you used a special glue on tensioner screw?
Very good mechanic and very good video, shows most things a new DIY'er needs to see and know. Unfortunately I have some screws that are stripped and I'm stuck...Help
Which once?
If you only needed to replace the water pump could you just remove the three bolts holding it to the block. Pull that out, replace with your new water pump and not worry about adjusting the tensioner, belt , etc?
Why you removed the bumper? Can't see the need for that?
You're doing great job and I can't believe how fast you're going thru the entire job! I'm going to do that next weekend and I estimate at least 15hrs for myself. I'm not a mechanic but learn from videos like this! Awesome keep up the good work! Regards from Edmonton AB
+Casper Werner
It takes 10min to remove the bumper, which saves allot more on the work, and if you donuts see good what you doing in there, it could save allot more time:)
what is the name of the part at 11:10? Something support, but I couldnt understand what you said. Thanks
thanks for all the videos, i share and like em. needs to top off the coolant on my b7 a4, whats the proper way to top it off. thanks
george aguilar it all depends if you drained the system or not... if you didnt, then just bring the level to the max marking at the coolant tank, if you did, you need to bleed it... there are two bleeding points, one on the coolant pipe that goes along the intake manifold, and the other one is at the heater core outlet.
Good lord man! You should have been a brain surgeon. Awesome!
AC belt tensioner is easier from the bottom..esp with a lift
I went to Auto tech school but I mostly do work on Hondas and most other Asian models. I have been doing more and more work on Volkswagens lately however. German cars are way different than Asian Cars Lol
My car is a 2001/5 but everything looks the same. I hope the water pump is external.
good video! hey how did you learn how to Repair cars, did you attend Automotive school?
Can I get the specs for the torque pressure I should be using
perfect explanation, very well done!
mowisz po polsku?
He is russian!
VW would of charged 8-10 hours of labor. You’re lighting fast, impressive.
Literally just went to the dealer, they wanted 1200 in labor smh. Thieves
Only 6 hours and parts. I'm a VW tech
this is true asmr for mecanichs
You save some time by not disconnecting the intercooler pipes under the rad when you move carrier to service position, I see you have enough room.
.Question: how often do you see the need to replace the cam and/or the crank seals for the AWM engine?
i only take one hose off, thats the throttle body hose... to gain access to the bolt on the clutch fan .
the cams seals are leaking some times... the crank seals are very rare....
Hell of a mechanic, thanks again bro. Quick question so every time we drain the coolant and refill it we have to bleed it? I’m sorry I’m new to this I bought a 2004 Passat 1.8t GLS for a commute car, and one of the hoses was leaking so I drain the coolant to replace the hose.
Yes every time, if not there is s good chance of overheating.
Ok thanks and good fucking job bro, excuse the language but I was amaze at how quick you got it done. Keep up the good job sir and I just subscribed. I hope you get a shit ton of subscribers
I have a 2003 Audi A4 1.8T. I noticed the other day when the crankshaft is on top dead center, the mark on camshaft sprocket sits one tooth off to the left of the mark on the valve cover. Would correcting this involve doing the timing belt again?
Stentorian Media yes...
Can the camshaft oil seals be replaced at the same time without removing valve cover?
Yes, you can pry it out VERY CAREFULLY so you don't scratch the camshaft... And put a new one back in STRAIGHT...
i have a 99 vw passat 1.8t. that is overheating after 10 mins of driving. I've try my best numerous times t9 get the air out the cooling system. i have redone the head gasket, water pumo, timing belt, aux fan relay, coolant fan switch, temp sensor. i can't figure why it still overheating. i do notice the the aux fan isn't coming on when it is overheating. im thinking about replacing the fan clutch. can you please tell me your thoughts? does the aux fan supposed to come on when overheating? how to know for sure all air is out the system? im not losing coolant. .thanks in advance
you ever figured out the problem?
There is couple of things you have to do first.
Bleed the system and make sure it's circulating properly,( usually if the heat blows hot all the time and not only when you raving it up,)
Then check and see if you get exhaust gases in to the coolant, you head could be cracked. Take it to emissions inspection station and ask them to check if you have any hydrocarbon in the coolant tank,
And then see what happens.
Good luck
?'s....Is it mandatory to replace the water pump and tensioner when replacing the timer belt? or was it a coincidence that they both needed replacement? Also, what is the dewalt model number of the rotor screwdriver i can find online.lol ( great multitasking skills when ur interrupted)
i always replace all components...
the part number for the screwdriver DCF680N1
One more question. Do you think a 2004 Passat 1.8t GLS FWD is reliable if you keep it well maintained
We have bunch of customers that crossed 300k mile mark and the run ok.... it just gets to the point of, if anything major fails is it worth it to fix....
You guys using Ingersol Rand impacts? Is that W7150 on the floor at 9:13 ??
+Suj its w7000
What product do you use to lubricate the O-ring on the new waterpump?
Figure it out?
@@1Chonn3any kind of lubricant will do
I once watched a tech break the bolts off a Mk2 Jetta water pump and call in the local engine rebuilder to Helicoil the ones he drilled out. It took 2 or 3 days. Once I learned you could remove the alternator, unbolt the entire volute to fight with it on the bench... I could have saved that customer a ton of money from that tech's inexperience and expectation of payment for fixing what HE broke.
Is this the same method for a 01 passat 1.8 turbo with a AUG engine?
yews it is, but the water pump is external...
Is removing the bumper cover/grill etc really necessary? or is it only so you can have more room and be more comfortable doing the work? by watching the video it seemed you could have still done it without removing those extra parts, but I might have missed something.
As always, great video!
it is very possible to do the work without removing the bumper... but it takes only 10min and makes the job sooooo much easier.
EDGEMOTORS
I figured that's what it was and it makes a lot of sense. Last question; what kind of grease did you put on the water pump? does any kind work?
ChamoCandela
as long as its grease...
IS this how you replace the head light bulbs also?
no, you need to add a new one into the oil!! ffs i cant belive this stupidty.
your stupidity? it was said in a sarcastic way
The tensioner piston keeps retracting after about 5 running minutes at idle. I can't figure out why, I've gone through all the steps and even ordered another new tensioner and I still get the same problem. Any suggestions? Thanks!
Cameron McEldoon you probably overtighten the belt... that's why it's retracting...
Thanks for the fast reply! I set the tightness (spacing between the damper and the roller lever) to 8mm (spec. 6-10mm) but then it retracts to more of a 4-6mm gap... I may have uneven tightening of the belt but im not sure how to allow for an "even tightening"? Loosen the cam/crank sprockets? Any suggestings?
wow real-time under 90 minutes! What is book time for all that?
Jon Stevens alldata says 6.7 hours
Kinda dirty looking car don't you think? Anyway, top job mate
also, what are you using to clean the coolant off the engine?
it was a 2+2 gum cutter
ok thnx! you guys videos are the best. very clear and visual.
im not sure when exactly hex bolt became a screw....
+Martin Mcgrogan I don't know about days....but he is very quick and methodical. one of the best mechanics I have ever watched. the last 1.8 timing belt I did took me a little over 2 hours, and I thought that was fast. Haha
+SwollenCranium and if not talking and making a video... just wrenching away, so far my rcord is 30min on a 04 a4...:))))
+EDGEMOTORS Thats awesome!!! i did the valley pan gasket and a bunch of other stuff on my 2005.5 s4 last night. I'm thinking about making a DIY for it since i couldn't find any online. No video but i took a bunch of pictures. Keep up the videos EDGEMOTORS i love them!!
I have Audi A4 b6 1.8t AMB and that car is now misfire and shows fuel sys 1 ol-fault and it’s shaking very bad at hard break.
PO264
PO301
and I think it’s o2 sensor,what you think?
Start with the misfire code.
EDGEMOTORS
When it’s misfire my obd tools show fuel-sys 1 ol fault
Well the codes you got is for cyl 2 injector and cyl 1 misfire. Check injector, connector and everything around... but looks strange that the injector cyl 2 and misfire on 1
But when I re connect my my battery it’s it’s better and no misfire
where can I get the special tool for the tensioner?
for which tensioner
The timing belt tensioner not the actuator.
