  • I tried this lens out on my Nikon D750, both in FX mode and DX mode. With a huge focal length range and a moderately small size, what will we be losing over lenses designed for shorter focal length ranges? This is not a review. It's a simple overview with a few details about the lens with a focus on handling.

I owned this lens. I won it in a photography contest. I was overjoyed to get a 700 dollar lens for free. I used it perhaps 10 times in the first 3 months, it had satisfactory performance only. For 700 dollars, you are not going to get a stellar ultra zoom lens. After 3 months, the lens became stiff in the mid range of extension 150-250 mm. I just lived with it, since i got it for free. Over the next 18 months, it became more and more stiff, and I continued to live with this condition. About 3 months ago, it froze completely and became unusable. I had been told that tamron has a 6 year warranty, so i checked into it. They OK'd the return, so i boxed it up nicely, then sent it via FedEx, with insurance for 1000 dollars. A few days later, i received an email from Tamron, saying that repairs would be 400 dollars. I want to point out that this lens had absolutely no physical damage: no dents, no scratches, no broken glass, in other words, on the exterior, it appeared as brand new. I have photos to prove it. Tamron tried to tell me that the lens was physically damaged, so they would not honor the warranty, as it was my fault. They had no response when I asked, why, if I damaged it, did this condition progress in a gradual fashion over the period of one year?? Clearly, the lens had an internal manufacturing defect, which progressed over time. So, to make a long story short: TAMRON DID NOT HONOR THEIR WARRANTY, at least in my case. I have told them that I will report this story to everyone in my photography community.

Do you still have the lens? It would be more effective to make a video about it than to post comments that likely few will see.

@@ScottJWaldron no, i no longer have it. i sent it in for repair, and they wanted me to pay to have it shipped back to me. no point in that, it is nothing but a paperweight at this point.

I had one but i send back because of heavy misfocus problem. I couldnt calibrate it. For example on 18mm to 3m distance you can adjust maximum - 20 offset but i still had backfocus. Tamron will investigate it and maybe send back a better one.

I always personally prefer 1st party lenses over 3rd party whenever possible.

Can you manually set the F stop and focus on the lens body? By this I mean are there actual scribes on it for those. I purchased a lens when I first got into photography and it has nothing on it other than the mm so if you are not using auto focus etc it is a nightmare.

This lens does not have an "aperture ring". You have to adjust that with the camera's controls.

any sense if this lens would improve long distance shooting compared to the Nikon AF-P DX NIKKOR 70-300mm f/4.5-6.3G ED VR lens (on a Nikon D5600)?

You are getting is an extra 100mm at f6.3. Up to you if that's of any value or not. There are a lot of other lenses in ranges like 150-600mm that would give you a larger range at wider apertures through the range. Of course, they will likely be quite a bit more expensive. One example of that would be the Tamron SP 150-600mm f5-6.3:

Though I think if price isn't a concern the Nikon 200-500mm f5.6 is probably the most consistent and reliable option available:

@@ScottJWaldron Due to weight and cost, this Tamron is all I can get; just wondering if, due to softness at 400mm, if cropping the the Nikkor at 300mm gives similar results to this Tamron at 400mm; thanks

@@deeber35 My opinion is that I tend to use 1st party lenses because they are the most consistent with autofocus, especially on traditional DSLRs. Also, looking at information provided by the manufacturers, the Nikon gives more detail/contrast throughout the frame at 300mm than the Tamron does at 400mm.
These two pages linked below show the MTF charts. Basically, if the lines are toward the top and stay at the top, that means more contrast/resolution throughout the image. The pair of lines for 10 lp/mm is measuring contrast and the 30 lp/mm is measuring resolution.

Sorry, I don't have access to these lenses to test them out on my own, but basically any lens that has a huge focal length range will likely produce worse image quality unless it's over engineered. The only reason I'd get the Tamron is for convenience of having that huge focal length range. I do think you will take a hit on overall image quality.

It seems like you already decided to buy the lens. I'd say look for a store that will allow you to easily return the lens if you end up not thrilled with image quality. That way you can see for yourself. Charts and such are decent guidelines, but first hand experience is ideal.

I have an old Sony A55 DSLR, is this compatible? and I hate the cropped image like what you have on the video mode, this is not the case for my camera is it? if this doesn't work, any other all-in-one lens you can recommend, please? thanks for helping.

Hmm, there is something wrong with the comment system on RUclips. I can't link any specific lenses. This lens is not available in your mount. Sony 18-250mm, Tamron 18-250mm, and Tamron 16-300mm. Though you might have to buy them used.
