    Just bought one of these. It is pretty good. The zoom ring is a bit stiff but I am sure that will loosen up with some use. Images are surprisingly sharp! Needs a lot of light, like most zoom lenses I have used...

    Remember that the VC can be optimized for video when creating a profile when using the TAP-In Console. Set it for Viewfinder Priority and the stabilization in video smoothes out nicely.

    if this has close to the quality of optics of the old canon ef 100-400mm and has a reasonably fast focus it could greatly impact the price of that lens and many other canon and sigma and even sony lenses. it would have been fantastic if it could have been used in a full frame camera and potentially put a huge strain on all lenses within the zoom range for soo many cameras such as nikon, canon, sony and others that could use adapters for this lens.

    What about focus breathing? The 16-300 indoor at 300 has less zoom that the 55-250kit lens from Canon.
    And the Focus switch is it a Manual/Auto-manual like the 16-300 or just Manual / Auto and in Auto you can't manually adjust?

  • @dietrichnissen9603
    @dietrichnissen9603 7 лет назад

    @digiDIRECT Excellent review! You always do a great job of informing viewers and I appreciate the time you take to do these. Two questions:
    1. Do you know if the Canon version is an EF or EF-S mount?
    2. Are you able to use a Metabones speedbooster with this lens?

    • @DarkLord61636
      @DarkLord61636 7 лет назад

      The Canon version has an EF-S mount only, and I'm not sure about the second question personally.

    • @dietrichnissen9603
      @dietrichnissen9603 7 лет назад

      DarkLord61636 Thanks for the reply! I realized after I asked this that without an adaptor for my particular Metabones booster this would not work since my booster can only accept full-frame EF lenses and this is a EF-S lens for APS-C camera bodies.

    • @KandiKlover
      @KandiKlover 3 года назад

      Yeah but only when you get really close. Any wide focal range lens that has close than normal focusing distance does that because the element moves so much when focusing. Not a real issue.

    • @wellingtoncrescent2480
      @wellingtoncrescent2480 2 года назад

      For my Canon M6 II, I have a Canon 18-150 (M mount), 55-250 (EF-S), and Sigma 150-600 (EF), and all are sharper than the Tamron 18-400 and have faster autofocus. That said, you can't beat the reach of the Tamron in a hand-holdable lens. NB: There's quite a bit of focus breathing; at 20 feet, it's maximum zoom is probably 300 mm.

    Hi well after waiting for almost 2 months I was excited to lay my hands on the new Tamron 18-400 today, but my exuberance unfortunately turned to disappointment when I discovered the Auto Focus on the new 18-400 does not work on my Canon Cinema EOS C100.
    Works on an EOS 70D Dual Pixel AF in video/Live View Mode no worries and the other Canon DSLRs but not on the C100 with dual pixel AF.
    Sadly I would have expected Tamron had tested the lens on the Cinema EOS range because lots of shooters use these super-zooms for run and gun shooting. In my desperation the boss let me try 2 x lenses just in case one was faulty, but not so.
    Please Tamron tell me when the firmware will be updated so that I can buy mine? My Tamron 16-300 and 28-300 work, as well as Sigma 18-250. So notice to Cinema EOS owners, don't buy this lens unless you test the Auto Focus first ...

    🤔So what’s gonna happen to m43? Essentially this lens has reach the same reach as Panasonic 100-300 and about the same size. Is M43 dying? I don’t see Olympus and Panasonic making any smaller lenses. Heck even their bodies(G9) are as big as a Nikon D7200 now.

  • @chaosyoshi55

    Coming from my previous experience with the Canon 18-200, these wide-super zoom lenses have horrid sharpness not only on the edges. Just my input

    • @bertiewooster4043
      @bertiewooster4043 7 лет назад +1

      I have a Nikon 28-300mm f/3.5-5.6 and the image quality is not horrible at all. Sure, it can not deliver the same quality images as my Zeiss Otus 1.4/85mm can but it is also smaller and lighter and more convenient when traveling..
      You do not buy these lenses for their superb image quality but for the range they have. Example: 500px.com/photo/100620083/can-you-see-me-now-by-b-wooster

    • @setaside2
      @setaside2 7 лет назад +2

      chaosyoshi55 your Canon is notorious for poor image quality. Tamron invented the superzoom optical genre and consistently make lenses of this type of a higher quality than other companies even have a desire to.

    • @alberttatlock5237
      @alberttatlock5237 6 лет назад +2

      chaosyoshi55 I've got a canon 70-200mm l lens f2.8 but for its cost and small gain on image quality I don't think it's worth it.
      I prefer the canon 55-250mm cheap lens with I. S, it focuses closer and further the only real advantage of the 70-200 l lens is slightly better in real light.
      I'm a photographer and not a pixel peeper, I'd sooner have a fairly good shot of a heron with a fish in its beak than a technically perfect shot of a handful of of lego bricks thrown across the floor.
      These shots are often well planned in a studio with multiple light sources, ok if that's your kind of thing, but to me it's sterile and isn't really capturing a moment in time, it's a well planned studio shot that's made to look like it's not.
      Hey ho different courses for different horses.
      How are images viewed? Or printed out?

    You lose so many shots with lens changing all the time.
    This looks to be a good compromise.
    I've got a 170-500 and without is it's an absolute pig to get a clear shot without a tripod.
    For teleshots I use 55-250 with is. Walkaround an 18-55 f2.8, or a 50mm f 1.8 so that's 3 lenses.
    I shoot mainly in good light so this looks perfect for me

    It is a major issue for me. I hate being a slave to auto focus especially in low light conditions or lightning photography. So if it has no gauges to set distance to infinity on the lens body it is totally worthless to me and a real pisser that again I will miss out on an other great solution to not having to carry around multiple lenses.
