    Using this lens on D500 and could not be happier. Zooming to 400mm to shoot surfers and handholding while watching other guys with their 3X larger and heavier 200-500mm and 80-400mm on monopods/tripods..... I think this may be the best super zoom lens currently available.

    I've tried many different lens combo for my holiday trips over the years:
    18-55mm +85mm
    18-55mm+ 70-200mm
    24-70mm + 70-200mm
    24-70mm + 85mm
    35mm+50mm+85mm
    18-270mm VC PZD version
    While the super zoom gave me the worst result, but I've chosen the super zoom as my No1 holiday lens. For me, when I'm on holiday, my focus is on the holiday itself, I don't need to get the best possible images. If it is a photography trip, then I'll get my pro gears.
    The superzoom gives me an option to travel light, remove the need to change lenses and provides good enough IQ to record the fun times with my family and friends. It really depends on what you need or looking for. It is not about being lazy either. It is hard to carry an extra bag, with about 5kgs worth of camera gears on a hiking trip.

      "Jim Huang when I just want to capture normal family pics I just use my phone or a small cam. No need for a DSLR at all there if not going creative"
      There is a lot you can do with a DSLR type camera that you cannot do with a phone. It's fine if you make the decision to use your phone, of course, but a phone will not work for everyone.

    For the price and maximum range you have to kinda take an L and use a tripod or at the very least a monopod. Given how expensive canon lenses with i.s. are at these ranges, it's just unreasonable to expect from a superzoom style lens. The great thing about this lens is one of its bigger flaws, not being able to shoot in low light/indoors, can be offset by just carrying your nifty fifty in your bag/pocket.
    Sadly can't be speed boosted on to mirrorless cameras for an aperture boost but still. This is, arguably, the best 'kit lens upgrade' type lens. Particularly if bought used/refurbed. Some people are paying the same prices for small kit lenses in 2.8 or the modern 55-250s and 70-300s.
    Only reason to not get this is if you're specifically shooting low light like events, in which case Tamron still wins out with their 70-210 f/4 that can be speed boosted. Then you just get your wider primes and you're set, basically.

    I have a question please, for Nikon D5300, which do you recommend Nikon 18-300 or Tamron 18-400 ?

    • @learningcameras
      @learningcameras  6 лет назад +1

      I have not compared them directly so hard to say. I'm usually not a fan of these super zooms for there lower quality BUT if it gives you all the range you need, at least there is some advantage. That's why I like the 18-400mm because there were a few times I actually used the 400mm length for the eagle/tiger/eclipse and I would not have been able to do that with any other lens.

      Dan Watson I see, thank you very much for your reply! Actually I prioritise zoom since I like to shoot sceneries.

    Is this lens parafocal? Thinking about getting one to use for videos when needing to have a wide range. Just can't have the lens loose focus when zooming.

      Almost every lens except expensive cinema lenses will lose focus when zooming.

    I recently purchased the Tamron SP 70-200mm f/2.8 Di VC USD G2. Would you recommend buying the 2x Tamron converter on this lens, or for about $200.00 buy the 18-400? Using this on a Canon 80D

    • @learningcameras
      @learningcameras  6 лет назад +1

      The 2X converter on the 70-200 is probably a better bet from a quality perspective...it's just a matter of convenience

    I use this lens. Sharpness is acceptable but at telephoto it has a LOT OF FRINGING. Without the proper lighting conditions the fringing is always noticeable, specially at photographing wildlife. A great lens for a traveler amateur photographer.

    Nikon 18-300 is awesome own the f5.6 version and love it. sharp enough and really usefull when you travel. Why wasn't that compared to the tamron? O well. the 2 stops vibration reduction is way to little on the Tamron. At 300mm I even struggle with my lens and the nikon has 4 stops of VC.

    • @learningcameras
      @learningcameras  6 лет назад

      +Wrensch Dev honestly this is the first superzoom I have used because I'm usually in search of the best quality glass. But this lens has changed my perspective that maybe living with less Sharpness but greater range has its advantages. Especially when the images will likely just end up on Facebook anyway lol

    • @Tool1903
      @Tool1903 6 лет назад

      +Dan Watson. Thank you for taking the time to reply, much appreciated. You should really try the Nikon superZooms. They are far from sharp that is why i mentioned sharp enough. I love superzooms as they really open up traveling. I also dont know how the focusing speed compares. Is the Tamron also quite heavy? I was very interested in this lens for my wife and her camera but alas, maybe will look at the nikon 18-300 f6.3 for the same price here. then for my wildlife i am saving for the tamron 150-600, because if you go big go home.
      PS. keep up the lovely videos you really provide good reviews

    • @learningcameras
      @learningcameras  6 лет назад

      Thanks! The tamron weighs 1.5lbs so heavy if you are used to kit lenses but it's actually lighter than most lenses I use and it would balance well with a Nikon 7000 series or Canon 80D.

    I am getting ready for a trip to Africa. Part of the trip I will be on a safari I want to pair down the lens to take because of the weight restrictions. I've been looking at the Tamron 18-400mm because it would cut down on the lens I would have to carry. I also have been thinking about sucking it up and pay the extra fee and get the Tamron 150-600mm Di VC USD G2. Any suggestions? I have a Nikon D7100 also.

    • @learningcameras
      @learningcameras  6 лет назад

      You definitely will want to be careful about changing lenses on a safari because the sensor can get dirty fast so it would be great to keep a single lens kit for that as well. On an APS-C camera, the 150-600 is probably way too long for a single lens kit so you would absolutely want 2 lenses. You might be able to get away with a 100-400mm lens though which are very popular. The quality on the 18-400 is a little worse but if you are not printing, you likely will barely notice the difference on your D7100 and can do a single lens kit to save weight and not get the sensor dirty.

    Beware, the ‘400mm’ is only at or near infinity focus!! On super zooms the focus ring causes a lot of zoom in and out.
    ie. a subject 10ft away at 400mm, would be equivalent to say 290mm on a 150-500mm lens at the same distance.
