The Tamron 18-400 is an incredibly versatile lens crop sensor lens. In this video, I take it whale watching with San Juan Safaris in Friday Harbor and compare it against the Sigma 24-105 and the Sigma 100-400 telephoto lens.

Were you using Continuous mode for most of this trip? Great review btw, thanks a lot!
Sir plz help me tell me which lens is better image quality canon 18-135mm or tamron 18-400mm forget about focal range I just want to know which lens is better image quality plz plz plz reply
@@nitinthakur4407 If you care about image quality than neither. Never get any wide focal range "super zoom" type lens.
Just so you know this lens actually does have a focus limiter as well. You buy the Tap-In console from Tamron and set it up through your computer.
@@nitinthakur4407 I have used the Canon 18-135 for about a year now. It's a good lens, not the sharpest, somewhat versatile. I do need some range so I'm considering the 18-400mm, but that's just me.
just tossing around lenses on a boat like they're socks, raising my blood pressure every other shot, thanks for that
Was thinking that the whole time brother! Especially when he has a PD restraint clip attached to the camera body.
I took the Tamron 18-400, the Canon 70-300 USM II and rhe Bigma 60-600 Sport to South Africa s Kruger. My daughter shooting the Tamron 18-400 on her 1300D, my girlfriend shooting the Canon USM 70-300 on her 77D and me the Sigma 60-600 on my 77D.
The verdicht?
. The 18-400 most versatile, weaker IS and thus harder to shoot sharp hand held @ 400 mm.
. The Canon @ 300 mm top IS and sharpest. Like the reviews say: AF speed, Sharpness at L quality lenses level. Cropping on 24 MP will easily bring it in the 400 mm range.
. The Sigma the absolute master on long 600 mm range photo and it IS is simply amazing. Hand held sharpness at Tx speeds @ lineair mm ranges (1/600 @ 600mm) in lower light no problem. I am deeply impressed with the lens.
But they all have their role to play in my lens bag.
With lenses like these, what I often think is that: "Who cares about sharpness if I can take the shot nobody else can take?" xD
Except everyone else actually can take. 400mm isn't all that impressive. It's more of a convenience like Swiss Army knife so I would get over yourself and not act like an uppity manchild.
@@KandiKlover or the fact of ease without having to change lenses. I find the 18-400 has good telephoto only if the object is close. Farther away and it gets fuzzy
@@cringecrew101asmr8 You also have to consider shooting over water at a distance will introduce atmospheric distortion and haze - nothing to do with lens IQ.
@@chrisguli2865 true, but sharper optics will handle the distortion much better
@@cringecrew101asmr8 Distortion is distortion doesn't matter how sharp your lens is, unless you like your water fowl or watercraft with wavy lines through it. A polarizer might help cut through the haze though and increase contrast. Please note I am talking really distant objects over near the surface of the water - about 20+ feet above the water helps. Cooler is better too so I really talking during the hotter months.
Was totally scared when you were holding the lens by your armpit/elbow on a rocking boat and snapping photos at the same time.
also scared me how he managed to get 135mm and 400mm out of that Sigma 24-105 lmao
Whoever edited this did a really lazy job.
Thanks for showing the real world zoom / reach of this lens rather than just quoting numbers that some reviewers do. I’m new to interchangeable lenses so this helps a lot.
Incredible lens. Used on my Nikon D500 and very pleased with results. Would recommend.
Seeing you on the ferry without a camera strap around your neck makes me nervous. :) Great video, thank you.
:) I like to live dangerously!
I was about to say the same thing. Good video i am considering this lens.
That's nothing. Watch him change lens at 7:28.
haha made me nervous too haha :-)
glad I'm not the only one. I had a Nikon D300 and a Tamron 18-270 be tipped over on a tripod into a river. I got back all the equipment because of a nice fisherman that could grab the tripod legs as it was upside down, but the camera and lense was destroyed. I cringe anytime I get close to water now
I would like to know how this lens compares in the 18-300mm range with the Nikkor 18-300mm f/3.5-6.3
Love your video! I own the 18-400 and I am impressed with the images it produces. This is hands down the most versatile travel lens ever made. This is now my go to travel lens where you can be prepared for anything.
Awesome. Nice to hear it Stan. Thanks!
Stan Obert what gear do you own?
+Stan Obert is the 18-400 sharp at all focal ranges? thanks
Massimo Cavalieri d'Oro Yes, it is sharp enough. Obviously not a prime but Tamron is producing excellent lenses these days. For a complete vacation package I would combine this lens with their new (not the older version) 10-24.
The lighthouse at 10:40 is the Lime kiln lighthouse and it was exciting to see as it was 11 years ago I proposed to me wife just to the right of it.
Great! I have the 24-105 and 100-400. I was debating on the 18-400! It seems useful. I am going to buy it for my mother who does a lot of casual photography And cruises etc. A great crop sensor lens value and all!
Tamron 18-400 is a great lens. Sold my Nikon 18-200mm for the reach and frankly I like the Tamron better than the Nikon not just for reach but also for image quality...
Jeff Cameron what camera do you have?
Felipe Santander Nikon D500
Would you recommend this lens?? I’m looking Into getting my first dslr and a decent lens for it instead of the kit lens. I’ve looked at this and it seems really good. As you have used it would you recommend it, does it produce good images.
I've had a Tamron 18-270 for some years now and it is a very versatile lens which does let you get images that would otherwise be missed. However, the images do tend to be bit soft throughout its range, even at its supposed sweet spot of F8. I'll be keeping it for now, but I will take a lot of convincing to invest in the18-400 - stretching it out to a magnification ratio of 22:1 does seem like pushing any lens just a bit too far.
Some of the images had captions that read “Sigma 28-105 400mm”
9:00 or so Happy to hear I was right to order the 100-400mm for an airshow soon from LensRentals.com and NOT the 18-400mm due to focus speed concerns. Not to say the 18-400mm isn't good, but I have a great close-up lens to use...
I owned this lens. I won it in a photography contest. I was overjoyed to get a 700 dollar lens for free. I used it perhaps 10 times in the first 3 months, it had satisfactory performance. After 3 months, the lens became stiff in the mid range of extension 150-250 mm. I just lived with it, since i got it for free. Over the next 18 months, it became more and more stiff, and I continued to live with this condition. About 3 months ago, it froze completely and became unusable. I had been told that tamron has a 6 year warranty, so i checked into it. They OK'd the return, so i boxed it up nicely, then sent it via FedEx, with insurance for 1000 dollars. A few days later, i received an email from Tamron, saying that repairs would be 400 dollars. I want to point out that this lens had absolutely no physical damage: no dents, no scratches, no broken glass, in other words, on the exterior, it appeared as brand new. I have photos to prove it. Tamron tried to tell me that the lens was physically damaged, so they would not honor the warranty, as it was my fault. They had no response when I asked, why, if I damaged it, did this condition progress in a gradual fashion over the period of one year?? They told me they have the finest warranty in the photography professional business, 6 years. I told them that their very fine warranty is worthless if they don't honor it. So, to make a long story short: TAMRON DOES NOT HONOR THEIR WARRANTY, at least in my case. I have told them that I will report this story to everyone in my photography community.
The Tamron is a very impressive lens for everything you get from it. I think I'm going to buy one soon. The only 2 things I don't like is the amount it extends from 18mm to 400mm (understandable for the type of lens it is) and not being able to manual focus without having to fiddle with the switches.
Just one tip, when you are showing the photos side by side you should zoom in for us to see better the differences (maybe up to 200-300%) ;)
Thanks - I don't feel like RUclips does a great job showing the slight differences so there are full RAW files for you to download and inspect.
That's also true..
@@photorectoby that's why you show 100% like he said!
After watching this video I was beginning to consider this lens, and then I saw the price and was blown away by how affordable it is for what it can do.
It's pretty impressive for the range AND he quality!
2024 and I'm considering this lens, in the era of digital sharing we don't need that superb quality and ultra sharpness but rather versatility to get the shot
I use this lens for all my pics. It's plenty sharp and versatile. Nice travel, all around lens. I like mine.
7:48 vs 7:50 that aperture really shines on the Sigma though. I don't understand how it shoots at 270mm, since apparently, it's only between 24-105.
270mm in a lens that is 24-105?? What? At 7:53 But that's a great review! Really liked your vídeo. Congrats!!!
The tip I picket up with the Tamron bigger lens, is to increase f - stop about one more for same or better sharpness. I was still tentative to buy one from other reviews, but the outcome here is more positive. Feedback welcome.
Great Video, Excellent Audio especially at the end. Keep up the good work.
Thank you!
Loved it. Great comparison between the two lenses.
One of the better reviews of this lens, lots of comparison shots and thanks for not boring us with the"unboxing" 👍
I am researching it to replace the very good Sigma 18-250mm f/3.5-6.3 DC Macro OS HSM. I need more reach for my Canon 90D
for surfing shots and video. Any comments on the comparison?
Been with Tammys in all sorts of mounts since pre-digital days, and this model seems to fit the bill.
LIKED!
Did you get this lens? I also have the Sigma and am very happy with it except need for more reach also. Would be interested in your comparison if you do have both.
Proper review. I think for the price this is a great lens. This will be my first upgrade lens for my canon sl2.
I think I’m going to invest in the 18-400mm for my kit! I was going to bring my 70-200mm for the same tour this video is on, and I have a 2x teleconverter but I’m having problems with it being really jumpy when I focus, both auto and manual. I also though about renting a 150-600mm lens for my trip too, but don’t want a bunch of heavy lenses when I’m wanting to shoot both landscape and wildlife (also only doing carry on luggage, so space is a factor)
Yes I rented the 150-600 but for the landscape you need to switch lenses....
Great video! Would this be a good lens for a beginner/first-time DSLR purchase along with the Nikon D5600 (Body Only) in lieu of the kit lenses?
Excellent review.. curious to know is there any chance to use this lens on sony mirrorless?
Great video!! Looking to buy this lens for an all rounder for when I go to S.A in the summer. Its annoying swapping between the 18-55 and 70-300 so was thinking just get something like this. But thanks for the amazing video!! You really speak in a way that makes sense to the environment and the video purpose! Rather than just spouting out pointless numbers! Like some other channels or sites.
Great review, thanks! Is that the D7200 You are using?
yep - Purchasing now. thanks for the review
Glad I could help!
I recently purchased the Tamron 18-400mm lens for my Canon T-6 Rebel. It has been a great investment for the style photography I do.
Hey, I’m thinking of buying my first dslr (canon T8i) I was thinking of getting this lens for it, would you recommend it?? I shoot landscape, portraits, street photography. Would this lens be able to shoot anything? Does it produce good quality images. Is it worth buying?
Great review as always. I have a question. Would you use this on a professional photo shoot or just for your own fun?
While a very convenient lens it isn't something I would use professionally.
Thank you again for your wonderful reviews and taking the time to answer my question.
Wow.. This would be a great lens for a trip like this. I went whale watching last year and was changing my lens all the time
Jeeping.Net This is the perfect lens for whale watching.
Because you have no skill or any idea what you're doing. I kept a 100-300mm on the entire time.
@@KandiKlover Wow such a nice polite comment.. have a good day
For what it is, the Tamron is very good. The Sigma will be better at longer FLs anyway since it's "twaked" for the 100-400mm focal range, whereas the 18-400 has more ground to cover and when you have such a wide zoom range, it's more difficult to balance out image quality, cost, size and weight, and usually image quality suffers a bit in those cases over cost, size, and weight, but as we see here, still not bad for an 18-400 extreme "travel" zoom. For casual travel, the 18-400 would be a good option, obviously lenses with a narrower focal range (narrower meaning less of a gap from wide to telephoto) will do better but are more limited to just that focal range. And for the money, with the Tamron, you are effectively getting the equivalent of two (possibly) three lenses in one, for about the price of a telephoto zoom from Canon or Nikon.
Hello, what's important and interesting for me, what f-stop did you shoot then pictures, esp. the 18 mm. Thanks
Best place to review this lens 👍 thank you for information
Great video....what Nikon did you use?
Hi. Is the Tamron 18-400 lens good for sports and does it work with a Nikon D15600?
Can anyone tell me, from personal experience, if you think the images this lens can produce will significantly sharper than Canon's 70-300mm kit lens?
Great review! After watching this I will be looking to trade/sell my Tamron 70-300 VC to get this lens. What body did you use to test these lenses? Looks like D7500.
I spent a week at anacortes in June and spent the day at Friday harbor. I saw killer whales and loved it. This video just makes me want to constantly return to Washington. You're a lucky man to be surrounded by such beauty and a community that truly embraces three arts. Thank you for your videos Toby. Cheers!
Sounds like you had a great time. Hope you can visit again soon. I do feel lucky to live here - today was really clear and the view east toward the Cascades was awesome!
I think your review was good, I usually find your videos pleasant to watch and informative. Not sure if you it's been mentioned but your titles are wrong after about the 7 minute mark when you were showing the shots taken with the Sigma 100-400mm but your title says 24-100mm, hard to take a shot at 300mm with the later lens... Also glad you didn't loose your grip either on the camera without any kind of strap or the 100-400mm tucked under your arm while you shot with the other lens. But I did find your review useful and am seriously considering this lens. This lens would be great for go light travel coupled with a lens in the 11-16mm range.
Hello' I DL your Images for Nikon Tamron 18-400mm I also bought the lens arrival Today ? 5/29/22
I used Affinity Photo to process RAW Files and then I use d Nikon software Capture NX-D and NX Studio .. Amazing results with Nikon Software Not not so good with Affinity. I don't use or own adobe Products so... I've always used Nikon software'
Awesome Images ! I'll be using the Tamron with D7200 ,D500 and D5300. I don't recall the Nikon used In your Video?
Thank you for the DL's your Images helped me decide Into the Buy of the Tamron 18-400mm
thats a lot of air movement zooming in and out, hows the moisture and dirt? and how did that shallow hood do zoomed in with the sunlight?
7:24 how do you get a 24-105 to zoom to 400? Nice video.
lol . - a little typo there. Sorry about that.
So glad you asked. I thought, "whoa! What don't I understand here!"
I'll be happy to have this lens. It's an all around do it all lens for vacations. Thank You for the review.
Thanks, awesome review
Thanks Beeeso!
Are you related to Curtis Judd? Thank you for the review of Tamron 18-400.
Good review and you went out and about..great lens...Cheers!
Thanks Todd - we had a great time.
I am going to buy new lens for my Canon D650 SLR for hiking and mountain biking in nature, what kind of consumer prize range lens you recommend for nature and star pictures and video too? Now I have Canon kit lens 18-135 STM, it is great for close range pictures like flowers and scenery views, but not so great for zooming nature pictures or wildlife.
Which lens has better stabilizer for video Sigma 18-300 OS or Tamron 18-400 VC, how about AF which one is faster to focus? Only Canon lenses I can think of are Canon 55-250 STM or Canon EF 77-300 USM which one is better for video and photo?
There isn't any Canon lens for wide scenery pictures like 18-300 or 18-400? What kind of zoom range is maximum zoom for handheld, not going to carry tripod or monopod with me, perhaps some kind of bicycle camera stand would be possible.
So how would this lens do for shooting birds in flight? All I currently have is an 18-55 and 55-200 kit lenses along with a 35 1.8. I am wanting a lens to replace the 55-200 which I haven’t had much luck getting good focus on flying birds at 200. Thanks for your videos
hi can you tell me if i can add a tamron converter to a canon 80D with a tamron 18-400 lens if so what would i loose
Appreciate your channel and this video. I’m going whale watching and don’t want to screw up my photos can you please give a few tips. Thanks
I'm an amateur photographer that comes from a bridge superzoom camera (which gave me great National parks shots) and loves to travel with as less engoumbrance as possible.
I'm starting with a dslr canon 77d, i don't pretend to have the same focal lenght of the old 4:3 258 mm equivalent of a 24-1440. But something for sure better quality of a Bridge and sacrificing a some zoom for all in one package.
Is it worthy?
Thanks man! But seeing you juggle those lenses... 7:26 :)
Thanks, Toby. That was an excellent video.
Hi! I wanted to know if this lens is better than the Nikon 18-300?? Thanks!
I'm a newbie and I appreciate your opinion. I have a Nikon d 4 used. I want to know is this lens compatible or worth the money for my camera?
The D4 is full frame. The 18-400 is designed for crop sensor cameras so you will be losing much of your full frame advantage.
@@photorectoby thank you
Great review, thanks a lot 👍
Hi Toby, another great video thanks. I have the older Tamron 16-300 which I find quite soft, and the Tamron 150-600 G2 which I find excellent, but heavy. Would you say in your opinion its worth selling those 2 and getting this 18-400?
There is no way I would sell the tamron 150-600 G2 to get this lens. Just my personal opinion. It will optically out perform this lens as well as giving you 200 mm more focal length. Unless you are not into wildlife and prefer a more casual photography style. In that case maybe a good Idea.
Remember that with the cropping factor on most Nikon and Canon camera models, the true focal range on this Tamron lens is more like 24- 620 mm, so it is actually very similar to the G2. However yes, because it is a cheaper lens it is not as sharp, although it is much lighter. I would not sell the G2 though, mostly because it is sharper and overall better optically like you said, but if you are judging on range there really isn't a difference between the two.
Agreed. Range is not a real issue here. In fact when it comes to long telephotos the difference that 100mm makes is not as great as some might think, don't get me wrong.... every bit helps, especially once you get to 400 mm. I often consider 400mm on a crop sensor camera a basic entry requirement for serious wildlife photography. But many do it with less. But optically the tamron G2 is fairly sharp. I'm not knocking the 18-400 but its definitely not as sharp as a tamron G2 or even the sigma 150-600 and they do offer an extra 200mm of range. And honestly i wouldn't mind having that 18-400.
so one question would 18mm lens make clip to the frame size?
what's the effective focus length for 18-400 on full frame?
ABout 27 to 600
This 18-400 seems a great lens, for its purpose. You can get a lot out of it, coupled with a decent body. I really wanted it to have full time manual focus with focusing distance window, hoping to see them in the future!
Thank you helped me very much. Great video
At 7:52 270mm with the 105 (Crop factor?).Nice review.
Sorry that's a typo and should read Sigma 100-400
Hi your review about this lens is awesome. I have a question, I am planning to buy Nikon D750 as it is FX will this DX/APS-C LENS will work or do you have any suggestions. Please I want your valuable information. Help me out.
Thanks in Advance.
How is this on the Sony. Is there a Sony mount yet or which adapter do you use it with
$650 lens. Surprisingly cheaper than I expected.
I agree. Quite impressive.
So no lost of contrast at long end ? If it is like that, it is worth considering...
I certainly see a little less contrast - I mention that but nothing dramatically different from the dedicated zoom Sigma 100-400
hi great video i was thinking about selling my canon 70-300mm L IS lens for this because you can go down to 18mm do you think the sharpness on this lens is good enough to sell me canon lens?
that Pd lock on your camera is just there for aesthetics
Aaah...Puget Sound. "Home Elliot, home."
I keep telling myself I like Arizona because there are no frozen water pipes in the winter...sometimes I'm not so sure that's enough!
The Washington ferry system is *PRIMO* isn't it!!!
Ferry system is PRIMO and man I love living up here. Arizona is beautiful to visit but I couldn't live there year round. Also -how often did you find frozen pipes an issue in the Puget Sound area? As a vermonter I laugh when people say it's cold here :)
Twisp _(the High Cascades)_ is where I grew up . . . Puget Sound and Lake Chelan were our play pens!
_(Nunyu Biznezz is my iPhone account.)_
Any experience using this on a m4/3 body? With metabones does it behave well with IS and focus?
which is sharper between the tamron 18-400 and the sigma 18-300 please?
As you did both reviewed the 16-300 and this 18-400.
What's better? Quote everywhere people says 16-300 is sharper. Expecially corners. And smoother for video recording.
What's your opinion?
how would you rate the tamron18-400 compered to the canon 75-300 is usm mkii
@PhotoRec TV,
is this compatible with Nikon D5600? is image stabilized with full zoom of 400mm ? Generally if the zoom is more than 3 or 5x image will not be clean right?
Please advice. Thank you.
I was hopping to see the Raw images as you stated in the video, can you make them available ?
I am sorry - it looks like it didn't get added. I blame the lame in flight wifi I was using :/ RAW IMAGES to download: photorec.tv/2017/10/tamron-18-400-review-handson/
Perfect review for this lense...thx
What camera body is that by the way? The burst rate sounds astounding. (Amateur here! :) )
Hi would like your advice on this lens with the older tamron lens 16-300mm. In terms of picture quality which is much better? Im confused between both as 16-300mm gives me a wider shot
It's noticeably better - It's worth giving up a little at the wide end for the better overall image quality.
So between both this lens and 16-300MM, its ok for losing the wide shot and having the 18-400MM as it provides more better image in terms of sharpness? Thanks for the advice. I guess there always the wide lens converter we can always use to get the wider landscape shots. 🤗
Opinions on this for sports photography?
Very helpful information in sorting through our lens options. Thank you.-RayJ
You are welcome. Glad I could help.
impressive, do you know whether Metabone 0.64 could support this lens for my 4/3....if it could, I would have a 12mm -284mm f.24-4 all rounded lens!!
I was just waiting for a lens our camera body to go overboard he is so much braver than me I always have to have my hand strap cinch down even when I walk around downtown Seattle.
What your opinion about nikkor 18-300mm vs tamron 18-400mm?
Hey There quick question. ARe you shooting with a Nikon D7500?
Used to capture whale that popped up by boat then tracked 300 yds away with zoom. Very handy
Glade you did not drop your camera and lens. Can you say camera strap? I dropped my D500 with the 200-500...
Thank u for this review, i like ur vlogs
but i have comment;
you have Sigma 24-105mm and you got snap by 240mm how com ?? please explain
That was a typo - sorry about that. Thank you
I would have been able to enjoy this video more if he'd had a strap around his neck. Through the whole thing, I was thinking, "Don't drop it. Don't drop it!" But -- many thanks. It was a very useful and enjoyable demo and test of the lens.
Hey photorec Toby. I really love this lens as your super grand whale watching review video really sold me on the 18-400 Tamron. Wow, what a so great focal range and great image quality. The only thing missing is the Full Time Manual Focus feature. With this lens, would it mess up the focus motor if the focus ring were turned by accident while of course in AF mode? Thanks.
Thanks. You physically cannot turn the focus ring - it's firmly locked in with the motor unless you switch it to MF. So yes :(
Great video, but why didn't you take two bodies to save changing lenses constantly?
I did not have two identical bodies to use to make accurate comparisons.
Awesome video...but you made me feel nervous waving the camera around with one hand above the water with no strap at all. Just found your RUclips offerings, and really like them.
Most of the differences I have seen in the different reviews can be fixed in Lightroom are Photoshop.
Hmmm you haven't done a review of the Tamron 100-400 Di VC USD vs the Canon 100-400 Mark II USM yet have ya, it's be good to see some bird in flight and raptors for subject matter using maybe a Canon 80D or 7D II.
Speaking of, how much truth to the adage that Sigma matches well with Nikon bodies and Tamron with the Canon ones? Anything to this?
