    I do want to note that this lens is also gasketed for moisture resistance throughout the barrel with 5 other O-rings (which do contribute to your damping issues, it's true), plus the back end. The mount itself is metal and well seated and the front element is fluorine coated so liquids don't stick. Because of these things, I think it would be safe to say that the weather sealing on this lens exceeds that of most other hobbyist level lenses; with the exception of the new 10-24 VC HLD, a lens that shares the same architectural aesthetic.
    We're really going for a better construct, even in entry level lenses, when it comes to our new design philosophy.
    One other thing to add: we have had excellent success tracking burrowing owls in launch and flight when using 200mm-400mm range. They're pretty fast :) and it's about the only action we've been able to get near since I received my samples but the lens exceeded my expectations in doing so. Of course we cheated by using a Nikon D500, which is an AF powerhouse but it was still a pleasant surprise.
    Thanks for the review, Master Abbott. Always good to hear your voice raised above the madding crowd, sir. Excellent as always.

    Thanks for the review. You are the first of the best reviewers to post a review of this intriguing lens. I recently purchased the Sigma 100-400 lens on your recommendation and I am very pleased with the sharpness of this lens. It is a winner! This new
    Tamron 18-400 isn't in the same class as the 4x Sigma zoom but it looks like a good lens for my Nikon cropped sensor cameras for an overseas trip combined with the latest excellent Tamron 10-24 and the Nikon 35mm 1.8 DX lens for trips where weight and portability are paramount. A good example would be a tour in the thin air of Machu Picchu for example. Thanks for your time and expertise!

    Such a GREAT review! I got so excited when I got notified that you are reviewing this! So many people started shitting on it BEFORE the lens was even shipped out just because it is a SUPER zoom lens. But I gotta say these images look really good! Maybe not extremely sharp, but the color is pretty nice and the photos don't look "cheap." I was hoping to see a little bit more images in the video though! I know I can view your gallery, but more images in review videos would be cool imo!

      Dustin, as an aside, while this review is chiefly for stills photography, did you have insights as to how the lens behaved in live view or video mode, on an EOS with Dual Pixel AF, for instance in AF Tracking, face tracking etc, or possibly on a Cinema EOS 100/300.
      You mentioned the zoom barrel was a little stiff from the box but seemed to get smoother with a little use. When zooming in live view mode did the image flicker as the aperture values changed?
      Usually, zooming on a stills lens while shooting video is at the ones own peril, because so much is asked of a stills zoom lens, the non par focal build means the AF is working, the IC controlled aperture diaphragm is working and the Image Stabiliser is working all at the same time and that's a lot of instant processing, my experience is Sigma and Tamron lenses often hiccup eventually with the stabiliser getting stuttery or the AF motor choking, or in the case of the Tamron 16-300 complete failure to communicate to the body.
      For instance I find the Image Stabiliser usually works best for video after you hold the lens as stable as possible then button on, that's when it kicks in, so zooming and/or panning while recording video is tough for these lenses to handle.
      (Sigma 18-250, Sigma 18-300, Tamron 28-300, Tamron 16-300)
      That said, I'm talking about using these on my EOS C100 and soon on the new C200, these may be a little different application than on a 7D or EOS 80D.
      Since you review so many of these lenses I'm interested in your thoughts please.
      Frank

    Hi. I'm so glad to have found your videos. I am looking to upgrade my OLD canon lens for an upcoming safari trip. Watched your video on the canon 70-300mm IS II and now this one for the tamron 18-400. Wondering if it is worth it to go for the tamron to get the 400mm? and just bring this one lens for all of our vacation photos? Thoughts?

    • @DustinAbbottTWI
      @DustinAbbottTWI  4 года назад

      Hi Annie, it really depends on your priorities. If you are going on safari, I would strongly recommend going the 70-300 route if image quality is at all a priority. You'll get better results cropping the 300mm from the dedicated telephoto than shooting with the superzoom. It's impossible for anyone to make a truly exceptional optical instrument with that big of zoom range (Tamron).

    Hi Dustin, great video! You did touch on it, but how quiet is the autofocus for video work? I would primarily use it for nature videography in virtually silent environments. In a nutshell, will my shotgun mic pick up the autofocus sound? Thanks

    • @DustinAbbottTWI
      @DustinAbbottTWI  6 лет назад

      Remember that I'm working off memory from 8 months ago, but I remember it being extremely quiet, and I doubt with an external mic you would have an issue.

    Thanks for the candid and helpful review, Dustin. And many thanks for posting the image gallery. I had my doubts, but was intrigued. Having seen the results, I think I may have a better suggestion for the market that would be in the hunt for this lens.
    To me, the image quality is about what I'd expect from a good point and shoot superzoom, like the Canon SX60 HS. And if this is really made with the casual-shooting traveler in mind, I think I'd point them to something like that. Heresy, I know. But that camera costs $200 less than this lens, is lighter and smaller, and takes images that are as good (better, in my view: A bit sharper and with less noise, surprisingly). And there's no full-time manual focus on that camera either, so what do you lose? Yeah, the sensor is itty-bitty, but I'm not sure that an APS-C sensor attached to this lens has any advantage over that sensor. And that camera gives more than twice the effective focal length: 21-1365mm.
    If a person is getting this lens because they don't want to switch lenses (even if over the period that they're travelling), just get a dedicated camera that does that. Perhaps something for potential buyers to consider.
    Again, great review. Thanks.

    • @DustinAbbottTWI
      @DustinAbbottTWI  6 лет назад

      Interesting perspective. I'd have to compare them head to head to determine the accuracy of that. I would say that autofocus is often an area of lack with superzoom cameras

      I have been actively using a (small, lightweight, travel-friendly) Panasonic FZ80 bridge camera (20-2000 attached superzoom). Last week, I purchased a (used) Canon 7D Mark II and this Tamron 18-400 as my next big step up. Today, I ordered the Tamron Tap-in console to improve the focus, which isn't as nearly as crisp as my old bridge camera. I hope that these $$$s, new devices, extra steps and added weight/bulk will be worth the while.

    I've had this lens for about a year now and I agree with most everything Dustin has said. I did a -2 correction for my particular camera (Nikon D7200) and it worked well. If you're wanting to take a photo of a sparrow sitting on a fence post 100 meters out and then crop in to have the sparrow fill the frame, well, it's not going to hold up. But if your expectations are realistic, the lens performs far better than its price would suggest. I find for wildlife, deer size animals at 100 meters work well, birds at reasonable ranges (less than 25 meters) work fine. It really shines as a near macro lens (wildflowers an bees on flowers mainly). At 18mm on a crop body it's not a true ultra wide angle but it does well for landscapes. On a recent trip to Alaska, I took 2 lenses. This one and a Sigma 150-600. I had everything covered.

      It's called "Fine Tune" in your camera body, and it is the way to make minor adjustments to focus to make sure you are getting consistent results.

    • @JeffandLeslie
      @JeffandLeslie 5 лет назад +1

      @@davidplasenciamendez2459 David, see Dustin's response below for the answer. With that said, the amount needed (if any) differs with each camera and lens combination. Just because -2 fine tune adjustment was what it took on my camera and lens, does not mean it will be the same for yours. I tested the heck out of it shooting test subjects and test targets (plenty available on the internet) at different focal lengths and different focus distances and different F stops. Pretty time consuming task. At the end of the day, a minor correction (and -2 is pretty minor) gave the best results over the focal length ranges. I do not have the Tamron TAP-in dock so I rely on the "fine tune" in the camera. With the TAP-in device from Tamron, you can make minor corrections for each focal length and multiple focus distances. Unless the lens/camera combination is really off, I think it would probably drive you crazy trying to get that many settings all dialed in. Your results may vary.
      Hope this helps.

    Have a question. I really like my 70-300 VC but always find myself reaching for my wide angle lens at the worst times. • @DustinAbbottTWI
      @DustinAbbottTWI  7 лет назад +1

      Optically the 70-300 will be better over equivalent range, though this lens is more about the convenience. You'll actually have it ready for that moment, which could potentially be worth more than a bit of extra resolution.

    Sir, I know this was an older review but when you have the lens facing down. Does the lens start open [zoom] out, because of gravity putting it down? My old tamron 16-300 does that.

    Hello, thanks for your reviews! I like how you don't evade the technical stuff and stick to the point :) I have a question to what you said in the beginning:
    I get it, if a lens is design for FF body the reference point is obviously 35mm film. Put that lens on a APS-C body and "functional" focal length (what you can see on the image) is different. Around 1,5x for Nikon and 1,6x for Canon bodies, right? BUT when a lens is specifically designed for APS-C cameras, isn't then 18mm (or whatever) just 18mm? When you still what to compare it to, or put it on a FF body then the "functional" focal length DEcreases, to the point where you "see" inside the lens (almost like a negative focal length) and thats what we call vignetting, right? One can achieve this also e.g. with extension tubes. How am i wrong here? Help me out..

    • @DustinAbbottTWI
      @DustinAbbottTWI  4 года назад

      I've got a specific video on this subject, as it confuses a LOT of people. ruclips.net/video/FNL_QcQWxTA/видео.html. But put simply, all lenses list their actual focal length, but that focal length ALWAYS must be multiplied by the crop factor of the camera it is placed on (1.5x or 1.6x for APS-C). That's true whether a lens is designed for APS-C or for full frame.

    Hey Dustin. YOU HAVE NOT FAILED ME YET!! L O L. I tested the lens and it is in fact SHARP!!. I deliberately tested it on my Nikon D300 a good but older 12 megapixel camera and I tested it in a dark overground conservation park. I will say this lens is best used at F8, F9 or higher in my opinion if shooting at the long end. (you could squeeze a few shots at F7.1) And of course since its widest aperture is F6.3 we already know we need good light at 400mm. I will also say this lens is a VERY GOOD walk around lens it could also be used as a beginner BIRDING LENS! (yes I said that)... if money is really an issue. It does focus breath like most other ultra zoom lens I have learnt about. so you don't really tend to get your full 400mm at some points even though it records that the shot was taken at 400mm. As for your first question, there aren't a lot of lenses that fit your needs. The Tamron 28-300 VC might be a consideration (much better optically than this lens), but you might want to check compatibility with the C200 first, as some of the cine bodies are a little pickier. Outside of that, I would say the Canon 24-105L, but it doesn't sound like the focal length is long enough for you.

    Were one considering using this lens for birding and sports (including video of same) plus general photography and video then one might think of comparing it with the Sigma 150-600mm Contemporary (for birding and sports only).
    Both cost about the same.
    The Sigma is just a bit more than double the length of the Tamron.

      With a lens like this (variable aperture), I like to set the aperture at something like f/6.3 so it doesn't change throughout the zoom range. On the 70-300 you are only going through 1 aperture stop (4-5.6). On the Tamron you are going through closer to 2 full stops (3.5-6.3). That's more noticeable, so if you just set the aperture at f/6.3 you won't have any change when zooming in or out.

    Thank you for your very thorough review. This lens intrigues me; I think it may also serve the user segment that I find myself in - the not quite prosumer but serious enthusiast. I have a Canon 80D and use the Sigma 18-35mm as my primary lens. I also have a 10-18 extra wide, a 24mm pancake lens for travel and street photography and a 60mm macro because bugs and flowers are fun.
    In my bag is also the Canon 55-250mm lens. It has decent quality but I rarely use it as I generally don't shoot that long.
    I think this lens would be perfect for someone like myself who, when they travel, doesn't want to take too many lenses with them. I am likely to buy this and sell my 55-250. Travelling I could see me taking this and the 24mm pancake lens of if my travels are meant to also be a photo trip, the 18-35mm as well.
    Question for you Dustin: are you familiar with the image quality of the 55-250 and if so, is this lens better? I am less concerned about how much light it lets in.

    Hi Dustin, very nice video review!
    Plase give some advice, right now I have a Canon 80D with the 18-135mm Nano Usm and I want a telephoto lens and I cant decide yet between this 2 options:
    Selling my 18-135mm and buy this lens (18-400mm) or Keeping my 18-135 and buy the Canon 70-300mm Nano Usm that you also review a few months ago. Wich option do you recommend?
    Thank you very much

      Since you already the have the 18-135 I would just add the 70-300 unless you particularly want a one lens solution.

      Go ahead and address your questions here. I'm limited by how much time I can give this.

      Thanks for your time I really appreciate your reply. In the same topic of the first question, I really like the idea of having all in one lens, but I'm afraid to lose some quality if I replace my 18-135 for the 18-400. So the question is, in terms of quality do you think there is a very significant difference between these two lens or not? And the other question is, If I make that switch do you think I will miss something that the 18-135 has and the 18-400 does not have?
      Thanks

      Over the same focal length (18-135mm) I think the lenses are fairly close in image quality. The 70-300 will have stronger image quality than the Tamron over the same focal range, though.

    How much I love this lens. I wish it will be designed for mirrorless cameras.

      Tamron is about to release an 18-300mm for Sony E-mount.
