    It wasn't Mao who quashed the Taiwanese rebellion in 1949. It was ROC's Chiang Kaishek, who had just lost the mainland to Mao and retreated to Taiwan.

    The VN-20 is basically China trying to create their own version of the Israeli Namer IFV, without any real consideration as to why the system doesn't meet their needs. A super-heavy IFV is great if you have a smaller nation, as the logistics of supplying the vehicles is easy, but China is huge and so supplying a large fleet of giant non-tanks is going to be a huge issue. Also, connected to this, it is going to be VERY hard for China to deliver enough of these to Taiwan to make a difference given the weight, and the current Chinese sealift capabilities.
    The forward engine is a good idea, but there is a reason why the Israelis are pretty much the only ones who use it. It provides superior defense, but requires you to work out how to not roast your electronics and optics with radiant heat. The US had a hard time dealing with that issue for our Booker M10 (a copy of the Sabrah light tank), and I seriously doubt that China has had time to work out these issues.
    Also, Chinese APS systems are completely untested, and failures in them would render a heavy IFV a liability. In the absence of effective ATGM defense, super-heavy vehicles just consolidate more forces into larger groups to be killed.
    The fuel tank and machine guns in the back are just embarrassing. That sort of thing is much less of an issue where you have a rear engine, and thus soldiers are dismounting through a top hatch, but putting that on a vehicle with a rear hatch is amazingly stupid. That design flaw exposes that whoever drew up the final plans for this IFV may be able to copy other IFVs, but their understanding of even fundamental design philosophies is non-existent.

    • @rwouwenaarrw
      @rwouwenaarrw 3 месяца назад

      Honestly im not to sure about that if you take into account it has enough fire power to reliable act as a ifv and a mbt in urban environments logistics might opt for bringing these guys into taiwan rather than mbts. Unlike the video states it isnt really that underpowered or over engineered it weighs as much as an mbt with an equal engine.
      Only the rear guns seem silly. It will be largely facing pattons bunkers javelins etc so changing the rear guns for aps might be the move.

    • @thesarcasticliberal
      @thesarcasticliberal 3 месяца назад +1

      @@rwouwenaarrw Yeah, it's based on a Namer, which serves that role as part of a heavy urban combat strategy. The thing is, the PLA's training doesn't yet integrate the vehicle in that role. It treats it like a normal IFV.
      As we see in Gaza, APS is no longer optional for heavy urban fighting. Without the Trophy, the IDF would have taken significant losses. As-is, they've lost 1 tank permanently, with a couple damaged, none of them to ATGMs/RPGs (the one that got totaled had a 4 story building dropped on it and a couple rolled over IEDs). We don't know how effective the Chinese APS system is, as it has never been used in combat or publicly tested. Hard-kill APS are VERY difficult to do properly, which is why the US and Germany bought Israeli Trophy and Iron Fist systems rather than rely on a domestic system. If China based their system on the Russian Arena (as the rumors are), it likely is non-functioning, and so a heavy IFV is just not viable.

    • @rwouwenaarrw
      @rwouwenaarrw 3 месяца назад

      @@thesarcasticliberal we saw north Korea test their hard kill aps with succes its a short step to think they got the tech through China.

    • @thesarcasticliberal
      @thesarcasticliberal 3 месяца назад

      @@rwouwenaarrw Show tests like that are meaningless (Russia had them with their Arena too) because they are so easily faked. Also, North Korea CLAIMED to have an APS on their tanks, but didn't actually do a live demo of it. They claim a lot of things, almost none of them are accurate.
      There are two ways to prove an APS. Actual combat is the best (which is where the Trophy got its reputation after going 36-0 against Kornets in 2014), and third party demos are second best. In the case of Trophy and Iron Fist, the IDF literally invited the US, Germany, and the UK to come and fire live ATGMs at a test turret equipped with the system. China hasn't done anything similar with their purported system, so I'm holding out judgement on whether or not it's effective. It could be everything they claim, but it could also be just another copy of a Russian system that has proven to be ineffective.

    The main gun on this IFV is not 100mm. For reference, the Abrams uses a 120 mm main armament. Originally it used a 105, but was upgraded to ensure penetration of MBT's of other nations. The Leo 2 and Challenger also use 120 mm main guns.

      It wouldn't be precedent-setting to use a 100mm gun on an IFV... the russian BMP-3 was originally designed with a 2A70 100mm low-velocity gun as its main armament. In serial production, they switched to the 2A72 30mm autocannon.

Desert Storm and it's use in Ukraine has demonstrated it's excellent mobility counters much of this disadvantage. The VN-20 being so heavy is going to affect it's mobility, making it a pretty inviting target. The US military has been focusing on making purpose built vehicles - the M1 Abrams for lethal anti armor, M2s for scout and recon in force, LAVs to move troops, and the new M10 Booker to provide direct fire support.

      I think the issue with this logic is that the mere threat of tanks means the enemy has to setup their defenses in a certain way. Remove the tanks. Then the war front changes to fight against other threats and suddenly tanks would've been effective if you had them in that situation. It's weird to think about it like that. This is why an adaptive and versatile combined arms doctrine along with intel is so important. Experts have been warning that Ukraine is not equipped to use western tanks to their full effect because they lack the air power, let alone whether they have the expertise to put it altogether in a unified assault.

      Plus to sort of point out something with m1, the Ukrainian operators of it did not have the same skill set as say an American m1 tank. It also does not have the integrated support forces for it. And it’s not the latest model the USA uses.
      Yes technology is advancing, but it still needs fully trained and experienced crews. The m1 is not an easy tank to use or crew. Compared to say the t series which are easy to crew. When the USA goes to war it learns from all other conflicts before hand. Ukraine is giving them lots of experience and information on drones in warfare.
      An example of this is the actual losses of tanks by the USA compared to other countries that have the export models.
      One last point, the importance of combined arms. Western armies never fight alone anymore. They don’t go just as an infantry unit or tank unit. They now go as mechanized units etc. they bring everything. And they employ it all as one. You can’t say the m1 is terrible and outdated just on 1 conflict where it was taken out.

    Not defending chinese vehicles but diesel doesnt act similarly to petrol. Diesel doesnt ignite from even being exposed to fire but if enough pressure is introduced alongside ignition then you have a similar explosion to petrol fuel. The only issue i see with a foot soldier drenched/tank crewman in diesel is that the barracks will stench of it for atleast a week

    The one thing everyone keeps overlooking about China when they talk about their equipment and tactics is this. Shawna is learning and is modernizing quite fast faster than anyone thought that they would. And if you notice about the evolution of their equipment they are learning they are testing new ideas. Yes these ideas have already been figured out by the list and it took us decades to learn these lessons but China seems to be learning a much faster than we did and are quickly catching up to our capabilities. They have managed to actually produce better equipment of higher quality than the Russians. and they actually have the manufacturing base to do so Walk the same time getting a lot of foreign military equipment sales. Whatever new equipment rush you can produce but only in the ones and twos China on the other hand is able to produce new equipment in the hundreds and thousands. They are actually slowly becoming a real threat to the west that Russia could not have ever been. The only real threat Russia pose was its nuclear arsenal. China now has a nuclear arsenal and a military capable of facing the West.

    The Nazis, particularly Hitler, had a greater and greater obsession with giant vehicles, from the Tiger 1 and Tiger 2 tanks, to the Maus. Ridiculous petrol guzzling machines (that Germany could hardly fill their fuel tanks just once), that could not cross bridges in many cases and were slow and subject to limpet mines attacks by light infantry. Plus, they sucked up more manpower than making two medium tanks. Not the best choice for waging mobile warfare.

      No, the Namer is amazing. The issue is, Israel has the best APS system on earth deployed on it, and they are a country the size of New Jersey, in the desert. China is giant, so the logistics will be horrible, has high altitude areas which are going to be hell on the engine, and lacks the sealift to effectively deploy them to places like Taiwan. Also, their APS is completely untested, and they don't exactly have a history of following the IDF's ethos of extreme quality over quantity (ie. you know the PLA is skimping on the electronics, armor, and weapons quality on paper so they can provide more of these).

    Correction: VN20 is a foreign trade armored vehicle, a supplement to VT4 tanks, and a product of accompanying combat. China will not equip such expensive armored vehicles. The basic VN20 has outstanding defense capabilities, with a frontal defense of 700 millimeters, a top defense of 200 millimeters, and a side defense of 300 millimeters (additional armor and reactive armor can be installed). Optional 1200 horsepower, 1500 horsepower, and 2000 horsepower engines are available. This is a heavy-duty personnel protection vehicle sold to wealthy individuals.
