Italy has the advantage that can produce locally most of the weapons systems it needs, so their production would actually boost the Economy putting back in circle the expense and can be boosted internally if necessary. And as someone else said, italy doesn’t need powerful tanks. The alps are are an incredible barrier to pass for heavy vehicles. the only need for tanks is to participate in the defence of our northern allies in case they need it outside our borders. In that case much better to use their same platform, for commonality of spare parts and weapons systems. Italy also doesn’t need too many ground troops. Needs good quality mountain troops supported by helicopters and artillery. The navy and the airforce are the most important. Because if italy controls the sea around the peninsula and the sky above, is almost impossible to take.
Alpine troops are the best of italian infantry... and italy also make best helicopters in the world that works pretty good on mountain landscape. Also boats are self made and we speak about state of the art boats. Simply i don't understand the needing of so many tanks... we should invest on fast and capable artillery and rocket launchers. About planes i think the eurofighter is better of the f35, the f35 is full of problems and very expensive but still one of the best planes in the world. The only lack of italian army are drones... but i think italian factories will have the know how to make something good. Piaggio made a really good drone, but the prototype get stolen from saudi arabia. But italian scientist also have knoledge on secret weapons and super advanced tecnology like antimatter. In case of a big war i think nato has many non conventional weapons that completly change the way of making war. But i think diplomacy and friendship are better of any weapon.
The Centauro it's an old style tank destroyer. It's extremely effective when you have air and technological superiority, or when you are on a lower intensity war situation. It's not a first line vehicle capable of engaging modern tanks in a frontal fight. The real ace is the Draco AA gun, because it's not an AA gun. The 76/62 cannon is by far the best naval gun in the world in its class, and has a unique advantage, the DART ammunition. It's a radar guided artillery shell, precise enough to hit a supersonic missile at 6-10km distance. The capability in the AA role are comparable to a short range SAM, but every round is about 1/10th of the cost of a SAM, and can be used against land or naval target as well. It's a unique middle ground between an expensive land based SAM, a short range, cheap AA gun and a small artillery piece. The idea behind modern drone attack is to use something cheap that you can only shoot down with something expensive. The DART shell is the counter: a cheap(ish) artillery shell that can shoot down even expensive missiles from a safe distance. It also has a surprising long range (20+km) and very good accuracy against land target, even if the damage is limited (you can blow a ww1-style machine gun nest, not a fortified bunker). The 76mm anti armour round should be able to penetrate the ceiling of a armoured vehicle as well, so the guided version (under development) should be able to score a long range kill on armoured vehicles as well if outside recon (drones, helicopter, aircraft, infantry) is available to designate the target.
@@12garkMaybe the Centauro 1, the Centauro 2 is currently the most modern vehicle in service with the Italian Army and packs a heavy 120mm gun that fires the same types of ammunition avaiable to mainline NATO tanks. It might not face directly enemy tanks but it is capable in dealing with them. The Draco SPAAG was just a mere prototype made for display by Leonardo years ago, but it never entered service, and probably never will.
I particularly like the 60km+ fire range of the Arty system. For mobile Arty that's a damn good fire range. Did Italy send any of these weapon systems to Ukraine?

We do not need to waste money in Tanks, Italy is a peninsula surrounded by water and with the Alps protecting the northern borders. Also most of the country has difficult terrain with hills and mountains. The Centauro2 is already very good in this environment. That's the same thought we had in WWII with only light tanks to fight in the alps...it didn't end well. What is going to happen if Italy has to fight outsidethe country?
Despite I agree with you about Navy and Air Force being our two main priorities, it has to be clear that our NATO partners could need help on the ground too. We should be equipped to deploy up to at least 3 brigades in a potential high intensity battlefield scenario. Think about our eastern partners needing assistance. Not being able to provide for that, on the ground too if necessary, would definitely undermine our geopolitical weight.
It’s true, but we have a weak spot on Friuli’s mountains. We only have hills to protect us in the east side, and the east side is the closer from danger
@@thomaspozzatello9602 realistically speaking, no one is going to enter our territory from land borders any time soon. Serbia is the closest Russian proxy in the region, and we still have a buffer in between. This is not exactly the same picture we had during Cold War. In terms of “personal defense”, for us is paramount to be able to deny our airspace and maritime area. Instead in terms of “expanded defense”, meaning how far away we can project any meaningful military power, allowing us to exert a political role, it is required to have ground assets capable of eventually fighting inside an high-intensity battlefield. Ask yourself this: if in the next 6/12 months Poland was going to send troops into Ukraine, would we be able to provide our troops to keep a defensive stance on Poland borders (vs Kaliningrad/Belarus)? If the answer is No, then we need to develop the capability to play that role. And we need to do it fast (next 5ys at most).

Italy has been a strong middle power since WW2 ended. But with their fertility rate dangerously below replacement level I don't see how they could ascend to great power status. If anything they'll have to rely extensively on drones just to maintain their armed forces at current strength

One thing people often miss is that while Italy's population is 60M, Italy has very laxed citizenship by descent laws (Jus Sanguinis). Every year, thousands of people outside Italy become Italians by naming ancestors who once lived in Italy. If the motherland is ever attacked not only would Italy have a manpower of 27M, but it could call up on millions more living in countries like the USA, Argentina, and Brasil.

The number of Leopard 2A8 ordered are 132+140. The Ariete will be upgraded to the C2, not the C3 version that was never official. The turret will not be changed, but all the electronics will be the same as the B2. There is little point on developing a tank that has been out of production for more the 20 years and which life is determined by how long the spare parts and the donor hulls will last. That is why it was chosen to not replace the 120mm breach with the one in the Centauro B2. 8:26 the vehicle in the picture is not a B2, possibly an UAE B1 export variant: the B2 is not an upgraded B1 Centauro, but a completely new vehicle with a different hull, engine, transmission and turret. The Lynx the Boxer (if ever) and the CV90 are no more options: the agreement with KNDS for the Leopard 2 includes a new armoured infantry vehicle co-developed between Leonardo, Iveco and KNDS with Italy as leading program contractor.
but Italian Lince protected the crews better then Humvee's, it was bought by so many countries incl. Israel and Ukraine/Russia! the Dardo is from 98, they want replace it, but for any countries this would still be a "new" vehicle!
On the other hand, one is a modern platform with a long development ahead, the other is a older vehicle that is mature but doesn't have a lot of room for improvement. If you have to fight a war tomorrow, the CV90 is better, but if you have to use it 10 years from now, the Lynx is a much better choice.
I am Italian and as much as I appreciate it if my country is not underestimated, I think buying vehicles from other countries is not the way, we have no funds to waste in the army at the moment
Apart from the fact that Italy should be a peaceful country by constitution, if we really want armaments we should encourage our industries rather than buy them

Italy has industries that can be converted for war reason at any time and leading productions in many military fields (Ships, trucks, helicopters, planes, mines, handguns, eletronic defense systems…). But no nuke at all, won’t ever be a real threat I. The big scheme. I’m surprised by the lack of drones, till the 80’s the development was at the same level of Israel and USA.
We got 60 nukes from the usa... i don't think are "old type" like a bomb getting out if a bomber, cause today a bomber would be taken out very quickly in another country air space, so i suspect are some sort of missiles. But i doubt they are in silos. Those can only be launched if the president of the usa say so.
We don’t need nukes. There are a lot of nukes on our territory, all of them Americans. As part of the NATO, others are in charge of nukes. We train Marines, even US Marines, and we are in charge of building a naval fleet that can defend the Mediterranean Sea.
Italy here. Really happy to know that, Italy needs to rebuild its national pride even throught military might. I would like italian media said that to the population but given our mentality is way better to keep it quiet and just give orders.
would love to see an overview like this on France, i know you just did one but it only focused on their Army needs, we really need a deep dive on their Navy and Air Force
You can just open GFP for a quick run down. In short they're both the best in western Europe, only challenged by the British for the navy. Our conventional ground forces however are very, very lacking
Italy will NEVER be a super power. Not since the Barbarians. And can't happen now. Unrealistic. To compete with USA, China, and even what is left of Russia is unattainable. Hell, the Russians loose the Italian army's entire inventory within a week in Ukraine. And that is with Ukraine out of almost everything.
I hope no. Being a superpower is just tiring for the population, and btw we haven't got a big population, and the avarage age here is over 50 (that means we got more old people (that can't fight or help in the industry) than young people.
@Knight_Kin of course, being a regional power is good, maybe the best position for a nation (as long as the superpower that has your region under influence is accomodating towards you). Nowadays, Italy hasn't got the characteristics required to be a regional power, maybe in the future... but I would not be so sure. Japan is the one that I see more capable of becoming a great superpower. Even though they have got the same problem of us with ageing population.
but is it a diverse army? Feels like we have missed the mark and we (Canadians) are all gonna die. Fortunately, Trudeau imported a lot of people to replace us.

Yo that Centauro weapons system is no joke. It's actually very impressive
@@LNMarls No, of the Draco 76/62 probably exist no more that one or two pre-productiom models while the Centauro 1 was never proposed to be sent.
The contents of the Italian weapons packages to Ukraine are largely kept secret. The few ones that have been confirmed are hundreds of surplus M109L, a couple PzH-2000, a SAMP-T system and an unspecified number of Lince LMVs
To say, the us army started to build massively the Stryker seen what was capable to do the Centauro 1 in Afghanistan. Taking after that 16 Centauro in leasing to train their future Stryker fleets.
Italy has one of the strongest Navy Worldwide. They even got 2 or 3 carriers. They are the only country outside of the USA who can and are able to produce F35. Leonardo, Iveco, Beretta and many more are italians. 60 USA Nukes are placed in Italy. Imagine that!

We do not need to waste money in Tanks, Italy is a peninsula surrounded by water and with the Alps protecting the northern borders. Also most of the country has difficult terrain with hills and mountains. The Centauro2 is already very good in this environment. We need to invest massively in Drones, and keep up with Air Force and Navy to protect the Mediterranean.

vero. incredibile che con la nostra manifattureria non abbiamo fatto passi da giganti nei droni.

The rest of mankind: “Aww s**t, here we go again.”
Not really. Italy in WWII sided with Germany after the betrayal of usa in WWI in the pact of London, where to enter in WWI at allies side France and Britain promised some lands to repay the Italian effort, but at the end of the war usa, specifically the us potus woodrow wilson, backstabbed the Italians refusing to give them the promised lands where they sacrify entires of youngs generations for. Guess who was foughting also the WWI? Mussolini, that was present in that betrayal act in London and he sweared it would have never sided again with allies in war, and he did it.
Nah we europeans are mostly chill nowadays...
What a sensationalist video, Italy is a regional power which is slightly arming up after a period of disarmament, that’s all there is to it.

Italians, even when their country does something right they are always ready to ridicule it and belittle that specific thing while quoting hearsays from the 1990 or prior
Most of the hearsays are from WW2. It goes for everyone.

I’m Italian and I can guarantee we do not pose a threat to anyone because 99% of the population bases their entire existence on football and nothing else is important to them. I hate it but there’s no way to change it 😢
Italy is a proud and hounerable nation there leaders are prepared to defend there country and its people against any enemy not like most European nations willing to appease enemies and comprimice with them
What a strange thing it is that, over this past few days, I've been thinking a lot about how Italy has become a superpower in the world of women's volleyball and then this comes up! I hope Italy manages this in the military sphere, too as, to her very great credit, Giorgia Meloni is dissenting from the usual stance of the Far Right in Europe, who appear to be apologists for Vladimir Putin.
Very pleased to see NATO members increasing their militaries. A strong NATO is a goid thing.
Why? NATO is just a tool of USA hedgemony. Independent strong nation states with armed forces answerable to the people of democracies is a good thing.
Brother if you think NATO is defensive in nature your probably brainwashed.

CV-90 is the best, proven in combat in Afghanistan and Ukraine, Lynx has issues that could take several years to get the bugs out.
but Italian Lince protected the crews better then Humvee's, it was bought by so many countries incl.
Bro real life isn't war thunder
Aster Anti-Air in this guys voice. I thought he said a$$ to anti air. I’ve had some heat seeking farts, but that is incredible
as Italy is mostly in the Mediterranean Sea, a bigger fleet could be a solution for it's projection on power
It would be fantastic if italy does come through with these improvements

Yeah like Fiat
@@Idelvion true, but the argument is the objective military power of Italy, not how much it is covered by NATO&co.

would love to see an overview like this on France, i know you just did one but it only focused on their Army needs, we really need a deep dive on their Navy and Air Force
You can just open GFP for a quick run down. In short they're both the best in western Europe, only challenged by the British for the navy. Our conventional ground forces however are very, very lacking
As an italian.....what? I know nothing
I sure hope 🙏 and pray 🙏 that Italy becomes a super power
Italy will NEVER be a super power. Not since the Barbarians. And can't happen now. Unrealistic. To compete with USA, China, and even what is left of Russia is unattainable. Hell, the Russians loose the Italian army's entire inventory within a week in Ukraine. And that is with Ukraine out of almost everything.
I hope no. Being a superpower is just tiring for the population, and btw we haven't got a big population, and the avarage age here is over 50 (that means we got more old people (that can't fight or help in the industry) than young people.
@@achilleventrella194 Regional or Secondary Power Status is healthy for nation of Italy's standing. Good to see some bolstering of this capacity.
Japan and Germany are arming up too
@Knight_Kin of course, being a regional power is good, maybe the best position for a nation (as long as the superpower that has your region under influence is accomodating towards you).
