Japanese planes of the war get flack for being underarmored and lacking self sealing tanks but this was addressed in new designs after 1942. There’s some deep seated political reasons to have an axe to grind against Japan in China. Relations were actually pretty good between the two before the Chinese killed all those folks in Tiananmen Square. After that the Chinese government decided they needed a common outside enemy for their people to hate, and Japan was a convenient scapegoat given past historical atrocities. China also uses past Japanese aggressions to justify their current territory grabs in the Pacific and elsewhere.

Those bringing up Japanese history hear me out. Tbh, I actually think only reason we villainize Japan is because they lost. Yeah they were unethical for what they’ve done in imperialism but so was US, France, UK, Spain…
And if you think about it, Japan didn’t really start the war with the US either. It was the US that colonized the Mariana Islands, the Philippines etc… surrounding Japan. They attacked these places with out warning them - a surprise attack. Making a big military base in Hawaii - which isn’t theirs originally. They were slowly making its way to Japan slowly, to the West of the Pacific. It’s very clear it’s the US that was expansionist first. So Japan’s reaction is expected and why can’t Japan attack when the US was attacking everywhere else.
In fact, Japan was a completely closed country, a samurai governed country in a traditional system until 1868. Surprisingly, less than hundred years before World War 2 started, Japan was still in Edo Period. And the only reason it ended was the US forcing Japan to open by threatening with them with fire - which showed its intention of colonizing them if they can. (Japan could’ve been the next Philippines or Hawaii).
So yeah what Japan did to other Asian and Pacific cultures and people need to be held accountable. To the US and its position as a global power, I feel like it can be justified and much better than other Western powers.

Making a big military base in Hawaii. They were slowly making its way to Japan slowly, to the West of the Pacific. It’s very clear it’s the US that was expansionist first.

I think Japan should get the VARS system for their V-22s. This will allow their Helicopter Destroyers to provide significant assistance in a natural disaster, allow them to supply their fleet from longer distances & allow their F-35Bs to have an extended range without using land based refueling aircraft. The Pacific is unbelievably large, having the extended range would make their fleet much more versatile.
    On a side note:
The US army is developing & testing a nuclear power plant that is a series of 20' shipping containers. They are connected together & produce 1 - 5 MWh of power. I've been told you can make synthetic liquid fuels (like JP-5) with just air, sea water & electricity) I don't know if they would ever use it, but having a self-filling fuel tanker would be quite useful, both in the military & in providing aid during natural disasters.

That's not the only issue. At least not for China. The Japanese navy is becoming a truly magnificent force in and of itself. Now suppose a crisis comes around where the aggresive China will suddenly have to face both the US and the Japanese navies working together full force. That would be one very dangerous and well armed enemy to contemplate. Especially since China is not unaware of both countries being high quality, high production, high yield weaponry if the economy will suddenly shift towards a war economy, while China is to a large extend far behind in both production and quality, not to mention that even though they have electronic knowledge far surpassing Russia, they are still not quite up to par with either Japan or the US, meaning that they can produce guided weapons, but they would still be a generation, most likely 2 generations behind.
Not much in terms of years and ideas, but a significant disadvantage in a war. They can employ defensive countermeasures through guerilla tactics to a degree most unpleasant to Japan and the US, but this also means that they cannot have the strategic initiative at the same time. And that would leave only nukes to regain initiative. A choice that even China has to recognize as a less than desirable choice because they are fully aware that the US can redirect their nukes to be targeted on China within minutes (Don't tell me that the US are not already in possesion of a full target resolution plan for both infrastructure and military hubs in case of a nuke threat). And Chinese are not dumb. They are fully aware that even if they manage to hit some missiles before reaching their target, the cost to China would still be so humongous that it could ultimately cost them the victory. Not a total defeat and occupation, but an attrition that they would never be able to break free from.
So meating a naval threat like the US and Japan put together, and aided by other nations even if less impressive might just be the challenge they don't need.

Meantime I'm excited we get to help many of these Asian countries from South Korea, the Philippines, and Japan, very proud that both the Philippines and the Japanese are stepping up to the task. That said I worry about South Koreans, unlike the Philippines who have embraced Japan in this new role, we might need to find a way for the Koreans to trust Japan. In the meantime I'm interested in how put relationship with India will form, they have a ways to go but I'm putting my bet that if the country can strengthen itself, it has a good future being more involved as a possible superpower. It would be nice having another superpower to help relieve the stress from the US, the Indian government seemed to have wanted to be a more peacemaker but China has pushed them too far it seems.

I am surprised to learn the favorable rating for Japan in Taiwan isn't overwhelming. Though China put Taiwan on its map in the 17th century, China had NO desire to cultivate Taiwan. The conquest of Taiwan was only aimed at eliminating its enemy who fled to Taiwan following a civil war. Essentially China ignored Taiwan for 200+ years when Taiwan was part of China on paper. In fact, China placed a travel ban to discourage its people from migrating to Taiwan! This is why though Taiwan and Korea were both Japanese colonies during the 1st half of the 20th century, the Koreans still today hold a strong animosity toward Japan because the Koreans didn't exist under the Korean kingdom in name only. When China ceded Taiwan to Japan in 1895 as a permanent Japanese sovereign, the Taiwanese learned to read and write for the 1st time in history during this colonization. Taiwan went from a godforsaken fringe territory under Chinese rule to a model colony under the Japanese empire and became the 2nd strongest economy in Asia by the end of WWII, only behind the Japanese homeland. As a result, many Taiwanese held a nostalgic sentiment toward Japan long after the latter was expelled by the Nationalist Chinese who came to occupy Taiwan at the end of WWII. The word, occupy, is so chosen because NO ONE ever signed a treaty to transfer Taiwan back to China! If I have to guess, I assume the unfavorable rating is given by the Nationalist Chinese on Taiwan. Unlike the Taiwanese, ie. people who have been in Taiwan for centuries and are the beneficiaries of the Japanese expansion, the Nationalist Chinese are the victims of this endeavor since they were still on the mainland during WWII.

The focus that some of these nations put on Japan's atrocities often deflect their citizens from the ones that they themselves perpetrated. In reality... both are horrific.

A beaten nation can choose NOT to change, after all. Certainly, the Japan of today feels like a completely different nation than Imperial Japan... but I suppose that's true of many nations. It is important to create a situation where war does not occur, as West Germany once tried to do.
Balance of power is the iron law of peace.
Japan alone cannot cope with China's ship-building race and missile deployment.
Perhaps a framework that includes Vietnam, the Philippines, New Zealand, and other countries in the quad will be necessary.
The F35A with shared B61 bombs and four strategic missile submarines leased from the U.S. would be a realistic approach to deter war.

NATO would win within about 6 months. That's how long it would take NATO to fully exhaust Russian equipment that means on land sea and air but it would come at a cost to NATO. It won't be easy. It won't be like going into Afghanistan or Iraq. Russia has an air Force and missile defense and they can produce munitions faster than NATO but NATO would take out their capability to make these munitions causing Russia to pull munitions from its already exhausted reserves thanks to Ukraine. NATO would also disrupt Russia logistically by gaining air superiority and denying Russia the ability to send equipment by air or rail. Although Russia has air defense America and NATO have ways to trick and fool their air defense systems. NATO wouldn't want to conquer Russia though we just want to dismantle it's corrupt dictatorship of a government because it's just too much of a thorn in the side to NATO. Not Russia itself but the government of Russia.

12:22 Japan has never been a colony of Western countries, and many Southeast Asian leaders of the time see Japan as a pioneer that liberated Southeast Asian countries from European colonial rule during World War II. From the postwar period to recent years, Japan has been actively involved in infrastructure development and human resource development in Southeast Asia, and as a result, it is still the most trusted country in Asia today. This is the result of a public opinion survey published annually by the Singapore think tank (ISEAS). Although China's presence has been increasing in recent years, no country in Southeast Asia can match Japan in terms of trust and investment.

Similarly, anti-Japanese sentiment remains strong in China due to Japan's invasion during World War II.

War is all about $$$ and it always has been. Imperial Japan wasn't all about the money (on the cultural level) but after having been "reinvented" by the USA after WW2 it is moreso now will be. This is what makes me unsure of Japanese fighting abilities regarding, moral and unit cohesiveness being anywhere near what they were in the 2nd World War. Japan at the time of WW2 had about 200 western modeled division sized units of about 17-18k men each based on a population of around 100 million people. The IJA also had six armoured divisions and various parachute units. The IJN, and lets face it, had many ground based units usually of regiment to brigade sized, engineers, artillery, flak, etc etc.. Then there were support units of and for both branches of various sizes also. Anyway, that was 80 years ago and what we really learned from Japan in WW2 is just how big a military Japan can form if they really have to expand to their maximum strength. Organizationally, what they retained from their Army of the pre-war era and what's new and/or American modeled needs some serious investigation. Which I haven't done yet. As far as the lessons learned from the war time IJN, fighting the USA and the UK just about all of the time, with a few skirmishes thrown in early in 1942 with the Dutch Navy, they are likely be far more interesting, lasting and useful. As Japanese rearmament proceeds, (they already have a BIG, though non-nuclear Navy) just how and what they prioritze going forward for both offensive and defensive operations with their Allies, that being the USA, Taiwan and just what kind weaponary they'll be needing for those operations. Also, if Japan wanted to build a partilly nuclear powered NAVY they can do it pretty easily. I'm sure they have the blueprints, ship designs and everything they need to do it with. "Friends" of the USA in East Asia are going to, whether they like it or not, be needing Japanese military assistance against China and/or (in every conceivable war scenario. Is Japan going to be able to maintain it's very fearsome military reputation well earned in the 20th Century moving into the 21st Century? That is the GIANT question to friend and foe alike when and/or if East Asia becomes a major warzone yet again. This is the question that our finest military mind, Secretary of Defense, (formerly known as "the War Department") retired Full General (4-Star General) and former Chairman of the US Joint Chiefs of Staff of the most powerful military in World History! Things are moving very fast nowadays and we, the American people have to have the answers to these extremely important questions from our top soldier if only for reassurance if for nothing else.

Japan is to valuble as a friend to let anyone take them from us. pretty much everyone wants to be thinr friend and we should spend more time nurturing our friendship with them.

I don't see why any Japanese citizen would consider themselves to be a colony of the U.S. though, and think the idea is ludicrous. If most of the Japanese people wanted us gone, then we would be gone. We don't need bases there to be their ally, but we're better allies with the bases, as they are very convenient for reaching East Asia in defense of Japan.

@@NightnDay402 you forget how the US helped them rebuild their country after the war. and that they even promised to defend the country in the event of any attacks so they could focus their efforts to rebuild as well. i am not naive about the past, and Japan were no saints either during the war or the past leading up to the war. but post war they had a pretty intense turn-around in ideology and way of doing things. and the americans aren't occupying their country, they have signed defence treaties wich had them make army bases in certain areas in order to defend japan as well as keep an eye on Russia and China, so it was for mutual benefits.
