  • Tokyo is the world’s largest and most densely populated megalopolis. It stands as a symbol of our Futuristic high-tech civilisation. Yet over 150 years ago, before it opened up and embraced Western culture without losing its own identity, Tokyo was still Edo, a traditional Asian city ruled by the feudal powers of the Samurai. Twice the city experienced total destruction. Yet each time, like the mythical phoenix, the city rose spectacularly from the ashes. Discover the story of this metarmophosis through never seen before restored and colorized archives filmed in Tokyo from 1905 onward. This film reveals the extraordinary resilience of the Japanese people.

    It always fascinated me how Japan rose and fell, only to rise once again throughout history. As an Asian, Japan's story has always been an inspirational one. To be able to recover only 20years after the war... then goes on to be an economic powerhouse second only to the US just a decade or two later, is such a testament of the Japanese people's aspirations. Despite the obvious bias, looking mostly through the lenses of the western imagination of Japan, this is an incredibly well made Documentary! Thank you for sharing it with us!

      @JustCassually 2 месяца назад +14

      @@RUHappyATM Well, USA and the Cold War certainly helped... But there will always going to be a post war Japan. However, the mere fact that Japan rose to become the second largest gdp in the world by mere decades after a devastating war, is something the Japanese people must be credited for. Not even the US could've predicted that. So much so, that by the 80's, a survey indicated that most Americans regard Japanese economic hegemony a more pressing threat to them than the Soviets... Leading to the Plaza Accords.

    I was also impressed that it was explained in Japanese.
    The only thing is that there are some Japanese words that I can't understand and some kanji that are incorrectly read.
    If you read it incorrectly, it will have a different meaning, so I went back and listened to the video several times.
    I ended up using Japanese subtitles.
    I realized once again that the Japanese language would not exist without kanji, hiragana, and katakana.

      The Filipinos that were forced to sexual slavery by the Japanese were kidnapped from the population and were routinely gang-raped, tortured, and humiliated. Many of them had their breasts cut off or received damaging wounds whenever they fought back against the soldier's sexual advancements. Many were also murdered and disposed like animals.During the occupation, the Japanese were also known to have killed Filipino infants as an act of entertainment and stress-reliever.
      The Japanese also sent "doctors" and "surgeons" to the Philippines, who performed human experimentation of native Filipinos. Some of these experiments included amputations, dissections, and suturing blood vessels of live humans. Surgeons gruesomely performed vivisections on Filipinos. Before such experiments, the victims were forced by the Japanese to dig their own graves first. In some cases, the bodies of vivisected Filipinos were sewed back up, then the living victims were shot dead. In other cases, the vivisected victims were left with huge open stomachs then dumped in their graves along with their intestines and left to die.
