The US, British, Soviets, Australians, etc. would all have attacked at once.

I never worked with Japanese Defense forces, but from the interviews and training these men are incredibly well-disciplined and professional. No false bravado, just confidence. Those are hallmarks of outstanding soldiers. Most certainly they have an amazing military tradition. This is the nation that has made it a habit to shock world powers. In the Middle Ages they defied the Mongols. In the early 1900's, they trounced the Russians. In World War II, they were the first navy to execute what we now think of as modern carrier doctrine. I'd argue that there are few nations that have as long and as proud a military history as Japan.
And to those pacifists that don't want war: that sentiment is understandable. However, whether you want war or not, war will find you. This is the one truth that you can see at every turn in recorded history. You cannot avoid war by disarming, all you do is make yourself a target to those that have armed and have bad intentions. History shows us time and time and time again that those who disarm in the vain hope that it will bring peace are inevitably victimized by those that armed. The best guarantor of peace is through military might.

Many Japanese people are positive about defense spending and the US military. This is because there are many people who understand the reality that even if the constitution states that a country is not to be aggressed, it cannot be prevented from being aggressed. In particular, they are aware of China, North Korea, and Russia as neighboring countries. On the other hand, many Japanese people have no interest in politics, voter turnout is very low, and it cannot be denied that even though it is their own business, it is someone else's problem.

Right before that they were trying to extend a hand to America and wanted to continue trade. Japan never had an issue with the United States, the United States had an issue with Japan encroaching in America's pacific and Chinese interests that it was investing into. Small matters turns friendliness into rivalry. Considering a major nationalist-western-leaning figure like Shinzo Abe could be assassinated in broad daylight, maybe realize it's all a bout of economic distress, diplomatic turbulence, and a regime change for the nation to become an enemy. I'm not for or against, but you got to be naive if you think someone is your pal just cuz they are polite and smile.

Japanese people love peace, they don't like war, only the leaders who made a bad decision in the past (thanks to the stupidity and arrogance of one of their past leaders). Now they face a new challenge, a stubborn nuclear-mad North Korea, and an aggressive China, so It's just fair to prepare and defend themselves. Not only them, but the whole world should prepare and not disregard the growing threat of totalitarianism and dictator regimes, who just bully and oppress smaller and weaker nations, and unlawfully grab any territory they want, and no respect for human rights. I hope nations, who love peace and stability, should join together to fight this egoistic, self-centered nations. Ganbatte Nihon. Good luck Japan!

Ask yourself, why are there British people living in new zealand where you currently reside? Why is it that the Japanese people were the only people that ever got hit by an atom bomb? Why is it that the vietnamese people were the only ones to get hit by napalm? Why is it that whenever a country decided to have a worker’s revolution, for some reason a fundementalist fascist was aided by the west to counter those revolutions like in Korea, Cuba, bolivia, etc. ? Could it be that, the leadership in the west have some ulterior motive as to why they’re really pushing this china bad propaganda? I think so. Remember, that the West has a united interest between capitalists and arms manufacturers.

If you want peace prepare for war.
Deterrence is a delicate balancing act, a game of psychological warfare waged between nations. It's about creating fear in the mind of your enemy and convincing them that the consequences of attacking you outweigh the potential gains.
This fear acts as a shield, protecting you from harm and ensuring peace. Sterling Hayden captured the essence of this strategy perfectly in his quote. The art of deterrence is about making your position secure so that the enemy will never even consider launching an attack.
In today's world, deterrence is more important than ever, as tensions continue to rise and the threat of conflict looms large. By understanding the power of deterrence, we can protect ourselves, our families, and our nations, and ensure a more peaceful future for all.

But the fishermen here remind me of every working class father in the smaller midwest American city I grew up in. They way they carry themselves, the cadence of their voices, their expressions, etc. All so familiar. Seems like the cultural differences are even smaller than the difference between a rural person and a city person in the same country.

Today, they have a new generation of people who only wants to live in peace, however, there’s always a bully around to take advantage of others especially if they know they cannot defend themselves! I had a Mazda (Matsuda) car for nearly 10 years and I often felt some connection to Japan while driving it as it was built over there. Also the refinement of it, the feeling of quality, enjoyment and intent behind it from those who designed and built it. Supposedly, many Japanese cars are blessed by some kind of shinto prayer as they roll out of the assembly line. Kami (like spirits) were with the car, I think.

I believe two nations can not have proper diplomatic relations without a strong enough military to defend themselves from the nation it is talking to. When a country has respect and trust and is willing to cooperate with the other government, attempting diplomacy with military power becomes an afterthought. Still, China needs to care about these things, and they clearly don't. So to maintain peace, at least over in Japan, it is necessary to maintain a strong military.

As a Japanese, I don't see this as a good thing.
If you were an American, Southeast Asian, or other foreigner, you would be happy to see Japan as a lid to hold back China for free.
But Japan's economy has been in constant recession for 30 years and has one of the poorest youth and lowest birthrates in the developed world.
In such a situation, Japan goverment is cutting social security spending and increasing taxes to pay for military spending.
This will further increase Japan's declining birthrate.
If Japan wants to prepare for war with China seriously, it must first fix its low food self-sufficiency rate and low birthrate, or there will be neither soldiers to fight nor food for soldiers to eat.

Also, the opposition parties have never had serious time in power so they don't pose any serious challenge to the LDP. We need serious leadership.

The fences are to prevent unnecessary chances of civilian risks under high intensity military operations that we hold. Not just that but it’s there to prevent sabotage should there be Chinese loyalists or spy’s. Trust me, we love the locals. I absolutely love the food too. The Japanese are incredibly lovely people that desire nothing but peace and quiet.

The Government may not share the interest at the people at certain times , but they are doing their best in maintaining security. I grew up learning about the Second World War it’s just so interesting how things have changed drastically the population hasn’t forgotten about the war however their ignorance may be their own downfall I’m not saying be nationalistic, but always be prepared peace is only temporary in this day and age

Germany has become anti war as well. Which I find interesting how both very hostile countries in ww2 became the opposite later. Either way, I support both countries having the ability to defend and sustain themselves if attacked by another nation. The nations who never prepared and chose pacifism. Were always the first ones to be invaded, occupied, turned into slave labor, or forced to fight for the country occupying them. Not protecting yourself brings the greatest regrets by those that survived it. History has proven that many of times.

Something that tends to be overlooked in discussion of today's Japanese militarization is the longer view of what led the country to be a major belligerent in WWII: in the 19th century they left a long period of isolation when Western forces came with steamships and artillery demanding unequal treaties as part of their colonial projects. The treaties were a humiliation and spurred a vast reorganization of society in the Meiji period, which put Japan on the path to becoming an expansionist industrial empire. The aftermath of WWII was simultaneously an opportunity for Japan to rebuild along pacifist lines, and also a second humiliation for imperialists. So today's rearmament is a kind of echo of the past - "history rarely repeats but often rhymes". Even with the call of nationalist fervor in play, it's not going to have precisely the same outcomes since the demographics and economic concerns are all different: WWII Japan had many young men and its industry demanded oil, today it's rapidly aging, several other energy resources are available, and while elements of colonial interest still exist globally, they tend to use softer power projection methods - base-building, aid and infrastructure spending, etc.
It's become more difficult for tensions to escalate in the way that the World Wars did because Pax Americana has created frameworks for coexistence that, for the most part, everyone still wants to keep. And you can see aspects of that in the Russian-Ukranian conflict: Ukraine's allies have made larger and larger commitments, in essence, to say, "no, nobody in Europe can annex their neighbors anymore". In terms of direct cost-benefit, letting Ukraine get taken over would have been cheaper for just about everyone, so what remains is principle. And that may be tested in Asia soon, too, if China decides to make a move. As much as the BRICS nations are getting pulled together by dint of being pushed away from the American system, there's no illusion of world conquest along ideological lines, since they also experience the same kind of need for coexistence in global trade: it's easier to just punish whoever throws the first punch because they're getting in the way of business.

They were always playing catch up. This is exactly the reason that WWI also started. The issue then as is now, the major world powers only want them at the table and will slap down others trying to level the playing field. Japan lacked a lot of the resources the other nations had, due to its size, and was modelling itself on Western Empires. Of course, that is not vindicating what Japan did, but we must examine why. It is the same as what is happening with China today. Not defending China's actions internally or internationally, but when the Western nations put so many military borders and bases around it, China is naturally going to get a bit itchy.
