I never worked with Japanese Defense forces, but from the interviews and training these men are incredibly well-disciplined and professional. No false bravado, just confidence. Those are hallmarks of outstanding soldiers. Most certainly they have an amazing military tradition. This is the nation that has made it a habit to shock world powers. In the Middle Ages they defied the Mongols. In the early 1900's, they trounced the Russians. In World War II, they were the first navy to execute what we now think of as modern carrier doctrine. I'd argue that there are few nations that have as long and as proud a military history as Japan.
And to those pacifists that don't want war: that sentiment is understandable. However, whether you want war or not, war will find you. This is the one truth that you can see at every turn in recorded history. You cannot avoid war by disarming, all you do is make yourself a target to those that have armed and have bad intentions. History shows us time and time and time again that those who disarm in the vain hope that it will bring peace are inevitably victimized by those that armed. The best guarantor of peace is through military might.

As a Chinese Malaysian, I grew up on stories from my parents and grandparents on the brutal invasion and occupation of Malaya during WW2 by the Japanese. My father was witness to weekly decapitations in the local marketplace of any Malayans that the Japanese soldiers thought were not respectful of them. It could be something as simple as not bowing quickly or low enough to them when they passed by. And we are not even talking of those Malayans that actually resisted them. Further, as Chinese Malayans, we were singled out for especially brutal and barbaric treatment due the support we gave to China during the Sino-Japanese War (1937-1945) that predated their invasion of Malaya. That is why, I and probably many others from countries that suffered under the brutality and barbarism of the Japanese during WW2, do not welcome the rearming of Japan. Remember during WW1, Japan was part of the Allied powers and fought on the side of the Americans and British against the Germans in Asia, where the Japanese Empire seized German possessions in the Pacific and East Asia. Yet, only 2 decades later, they were at war against the Americans and British, and invaded and conquered their colonies in Asia. Who is to say that in another 2 decades time, Japan would not become a militaristic nation again with desires of conquest in Asia?
British historian Mark Felton claims that up to 30 million people were killed, most of them civilians:
"The Japanese murdered 30 million civilians while "liberating" what it called the Greater East Asia Co-Prosperity Sphere from colonial rule. About 23 million of these were ethnic Chinese. It is a crime that in sheer numbers is far greater than the Nazi Holocaust. In Germany, Holocaust denial is a crime. In Japan, it is government policy."
Yet, all you hear in the West is the Jewish holocaust where only 6 millions Jews were murdered by the Nazis. You hardly if ever hear any discussion about the staggering numbers of ethnic Chinese killed in China and South East Asia.

    • @中段チェリ王
      @中段チェリ王 7 месяцев назад +3

Did the Japanese military kill 30 million civilians?
      That's stupid propaganda.
Please don't blame Japan for anything.
Then the British army killed around 60 million people?
If you look at British history...let's drink tea with opium.
90% of Japanese soldiers died from starvation.
      There's no food.
I mean, I don't have any weapons or ammo, so how can I kill you?
At the time, China did not have an autonomous government and had two military gangs similar to Mexico's Los Zetas.
The Communist Party and the National Party.
The other is the Japanese military.
In fact, Mao Zedong killed 100 million Chinese people.
      Why do you worship it?

    • @mmktn
      @mmktn 11 часов назад

I am saddened that Japan liberated Asia from colonialism, but also saddened that so many people lost their lives. But we are also horrified by the fact that 40 million of our own people were murdered in the madness of Mao Zedong. It is unlikely that Japan will attempt genocide again. But when people think of what the communists are doing to Hong Kong, Taiwan, Tibet, and Uyghur, they are horrified by the insanity of the Chinese Communist Party

The "Manhattan project" built the atomic bombs that were dropped on Japanese cities was lead by Oppenheimer, he was assisted by physics theorists most of whom like Oppenheimer were Jewish who had fled Europe before WW2. In the choice of target cities, Oppenheimer wanted to bomb several cities on the same day. Kyoto the city of temples was to be the first target. Kyoto was saved by Edwin O. Reischauer an american Christian born in Tokyo in 1910 from missionary parents who was an expert on Japan with the secret services. When he learned of the choice of Kyoto, he opposed the Jewish lead choice very emotionally. Kyoto was replaced by Nagasaki. Nagasaki was chosen because it was a port that benefits countries other than Usa in trading with Japan and because it was a historical center of Christianity in Japan which the US deep state secretly opposed, like it opposed JF Kennedy later.
Contrary to what is commonly believed the nuclear bombs were not dropped to force Japan to surrender. The Potsdam ultimatum declaration to Japan was published July 26 1945, but the Manhattan project and the american deep state already insisted on dropping the bombs earlier, and Truman approved the order on July 21st. before the ultimatum was made. The bomb were to be dropped when the weather allows. The decision to drop nuclear bombs on Japan hence did not come from the military, neither was it taken by a fair representation of the Us population opinion but it was a political decision taken by a small minority in the US deep state.

Many Japanese people are positive about defense spending and the US military. This is because there are many people who understand the reality that even if the constitution states that a country is not to be aggressed, it cannot be prevented from being aggressed. In particular, they are aware of China, North Korea, and Russia as neighboring countries. On the other hand, many Japanese people have no interest in politics, voter turnout is very low, and it cannot be denied that even though it is their own business, it is someone else's problem.

This is the most willfully ignorant thing I have ever heard. There has been peace in Japan for the past 80 years because of America's military and America's security guarantees. Pacifism only works if EVERYONE agrees to be a pacifist, which means pacifism has NEVER WORKED. Every nation/culture/tribe that has relied on pacifism to protect itself has disappeared off the face of the earth, either by being fully annexed by a greater power or by having its people exterminated. To think that a passage in the constitution is the reason you haven't been invaded is sheer fantasy.

If you want peace prepare for war.
Deterrence is a delicate balancing act, a game of psychological warfare waged between nations. It's about creating fear in the mind of your enemy and convincing them that the consequences of attacking you outweigh the potential gains.
This fear acts as a shield, protecting you from harm and ensuring peace. Sterling Hayden captured the essence of this strategy perfectly in his quote. The art of deterrence is about making your position secure so that the enemy will never even consider launching an attack.
In today's world, deterrence is more important than ever, as tensions continue to rise and the threat of conflict looms large. By understanding the power of deterrence, we can protect ourselves, our families, and our nations, and ensure a more peaceful future for all.

As a Japanese, I don't see this as a good thing.
If you were an American, Southeast Asian, or other foreigner, you would be happy to see Japan as a lid to hold back China for free.
But Japan's economy has been in constant recession for 30 years and has one of the poorest youth and lowest birthrates in the developed world.
In such a situation, Japan goverment is cutting social security spending and increasing taxes to pay for military spending.
This will further increase Japan's declining birthrate.
If Japan wants to prepare for war with China seriously, it must first fix its low food self-sufficiency rate and low birthrate, or there will be neither soldiers to fight nor food for soldiers to eat.

They have yet to formally apologize for their war crimes and continue to deny many of their horrific crimes to this day, with former prime minister Shinzo Abe being one of the worst offenders. Allowing the Japanese to build up an army is a mistake, and will come with grave consequences when they decide its time to start pushing forth their imperialistic agenda again. Had the US not ended the Japanese during WW2 who knows what further atrocities they might’ve committed against the whole of Asia pretty much

    • @115islandscompass6
      @115islandscompass6 Год назад

I don't think that the Japanese Army did not anything terrible in the past, but I also don't think that everything that is being touted today is true.
The Allies circulated a lot of propaganda(fake news) to raise their fighting spirit, like recently.
For example, one of them was the Nanjing Massacre which was fabricated by anti-Japanese activists Missionary John Magee in the United States.
He did so in order to make the Americans, who were reluctant to war, accept the war with Japan.
Later, it has been distorted and used by the Allies repeatedly.
Also, there is the case of Palau.
Palau was ceded to Japan after WW1, Japan treated Palau like a regional city in Japan not colony.
After WW2 it was occupied by the United States. After destroying all the structures Japan built for the people of Palau, the United States made Palau textbooks write about "fictitious atrocities committed by Japan". Palau reverted to the fact-based textbooks they knew after the US left.
From 1999 to 2007, under the Japan-hating and pro-China Clinton administration, the so-called Interagency Working Group (IWG) report on the German-Japanese war crimes review was carried out.
At this time, the IWG investigated the following war crimes allegations:
      - The Japanese military systematically forcibly kidnapped 200,000 women, made them into sex slaves, and killed them when they fell ill.
      - Unit 731 conducted human experiments.
The United States spent a huge amount of money(about 30 million dollars) and eight years trying to find evidence and materials about them from confidential documents of about 8.5 million pages.
However, the objective evidence that was thought to be available in this investigation was not found.
In the 142,000 pages of confidential documents held by the United States about Unit 731, there was no evidence that Unit 731 conducted human experiments or engaged in germ warfare.
This means that everything said about Unit 731 after the war has been proven to be an unsubstantiated fabrication.
Conversely, the study about comfort women revealed that:
-The comfort women system was an extension of the legalized prostitution system in Japan at the time.
-The Japanese military initiated this system to prevent general violence against women and the spread of sexually transmitted diseases.
-The U.S. military did not recognize the criminal nature of the comfort women system of the Japanese military.
As we can see from those things, the Allies has made people believe "Japan's fictitious war crimes" as if it’s true in order to justify their actions during WW2.

    • @115islandscompass6

      @@BananaPhoPhilly
      Yes, I have.
As found out in the U.S. survey, the story about Unit 731 is a communist fabrication.
Unit 731 was originally an anti-epidemic unit. During the war with the Qing Dynasty, 90% of the Japanese casualties were due to mainland epidemics. For this reason, Japan later became to set up a unit to research water supply and epidemic prevention. Unit 731 is just one of them.
After invading Manchuria, the Soviet army unfairly detained some members of Unit 731 and forced them to testify at the trial that "outrageous things had been done" using torture and other means. But this was a forced "confession" through death threats and unwarranted interrogation and torture. There was also an environment in which they were brainwashed as if the story they wanted POW to admit was actually done. Therefore, those veterans's confessions are not credible.
It was in the 1980s that the story of Unit 731 came out again.
It was through the novel "Devil's gluttony," which was published in a newspaper published by the Japanese Communist Party.
The author of the novel said that he was inspired by Unit 731, but that the content of story was fictional. However, the communists took it as if it were true and made a fuss.
And a report that seems to prove that the content written in the novel is true was also "discovered".
The report said that this was a summary report of a confidential document signed an affidavit of 19 doctors of Unit 731.
Because of this report, the Chinese believed Unit 731 had actually done something outrageous.
The Chinese thought that in the archives of classified US documents, which had a habit of recording everything, there should be an affidavit signed by 19 doctors of Unit 731, objective evidence of human experiments, etc.
President Clinton was backed by a big Chinese group in the United States, so he responded to demands of Chinese supporters for the investigation by spending about $30 million in U.S. tax dollars to conduct an eight-year exhaustive investigation.
However, the "affidavits of 19 doctors" were not found.
In short, it has already been revealed decades ago that such a terrible story of Unit 731 is all propaganda fabricated by communist forces.

What you are saying is illogical.
The US investigation was very thorough.
Bill Clinton, who was the president of the United States at the time, hates Japan and is pro-China. Together with his Chinese-American supporters, he must have believed that evidence of Unit 731's war crimes would be found.
The President of the United States has the power to disclose classified documents. Yet no evidence was found.
      You can't understand why?
After the war, many Japanese soldiers were executed without even a proper examination due to slight suspicion.
For example, the company that published the newspaper admits that the news on "100 people killed in China" was fake news written to raise the morale of people, and increase sales of the newspaper.
But the soldiers who were written to have done it were put to death by firing squad.
If those Japanese soldiers of the Unit 731 had done what Hal Gold wrote in his book, they could not have escaped execution.

Right before that they were trying to extend a hand to America and wanted to continue trade. Japan never had an issue with the United States, the United States had an issue with Japan encroaching in America's pacific and Chinese interests that it was investing into. Small matters turns friendliness into rivalry. Considering a major nationalist-western-leaning figure like Shinzo Abe could be assassinated in broad daylight, maybe realize it's all a bout of economic distress, diplomatic turbulence, and a regime change for the nation to become an enemy. I'm not for or against, but you got to be naive if you think someone is your pal just cuz they are polite and smile.

We had the opportunity to do some training with them when I was stationed in the Pacific during the late 1980's. They were highly motivated, intelligent, and dedicated group just too small in numbers. As an American who served in the Armed Forces, I can say without a doubt the US considers Japan a great Allie and friend. I know that there has been a lot of tension over the years between Japanese citizens and the US military personnel stationed on Okinawa, but just wanted to say most of us have a lot of respect for you and your military. I have been in Japan on a long-term visa since February to learn first hand about the country that I could not accomplish on a 90 day tourist visa. I'm guessing you are a chinese bot because you are GROSSLY misinformed. Except during the pandemic, I have visited Japan annually, and have very much seen that food, transportation, utility prices (according to my neighbors), etc., have NOT "skyrocketed". Inflation in Japan just reached a high of 3.2% in March, where it has been 'averaging" 0% for the last 20+ years. Hence, as my neighbors have said, there has been no real impetus for wage increases (but you must have a "dark" agenda, even an idiot would not say/suggest there has "not" been a pay raise for a "century"). Plus, from experts on the issue, the increased vote for the Japan ending her pacifist outlook is coming from younger voters, NOT the elderly as evidenced in the video. Plus one should not assume that "kids" in Okinawa, reflect that of those in Tokyo, Osaka, etc. The Okinawans have a somewhat different perspective because of the extent of military facilities, their history in WWII, and the fact that they are closer to Taiwan.
But let me point out some telling statistics. Japan's government debt is just under $10 trillion, while the US is at $31.5 trillion. On a total basis, the US has much more debt relative to population. Relative to GDP, it is somewhat higher, but much of that amount needed to be spent for technology-driven upgrades Japanese infrastructure in order to alleviate damage from earthquakes (which appears to have been a good decision as evidenced by the relatively low amount of structural damage during the 2011 9.0 magnitude earthquake, as opposed to that of what happened in Turkey).
Furthermore, the total gross amount of personal savings assets in Japan is estimated at $18 trillion (well over 2 quadrillion yen), while the US has 2.3 trillion in gross savings assets (a definitely significant difference when comparing the much lower size - 37% of the Japanese population in comparison to the US). Plus, personal family debt is much lower in Japan than the US because of the strong inclination of the Japanese to use cash, and the lower amount of residential mortgage debt. Total gross Japanese corporate savings assets is about $5 trillion, which is estimated at more than 3 times that of US corporations. And Japan holds the highest amount of foreign government debt instruments, such as $1.2 trillion of US government bonds. Finally, for more than the last 20 years, the "standard" 10 year Japanese government bond has been less than 0.5%, which has allowed them to spend where mostly necessary. It doesn't take a mathematician to conclude which country has the overall better overall financial metrics. This is a reason foreign banks from other countries like the US, European, etc., have been trying for years to be able to enter the Japanese banking industry, because of the extremely high amount of Japanese savings. If these are a people who "are going to be crushed by their economic burdens", your simple-minded conclusion stands in stark contrast to the empirical data above.
Regarding the declining population, it does appear Japan is making the necessary changes. In the 3 months that I have been here, I have observed a higher use of technology to solve this issue, in grocery stores, banks, airports, etc. Concerning that the unemployment rate in Japan has mostly varied between 2.5% and 3% for most of the last 25 years or so without have to heavily import foreign workers, I would say that they have done quite well. Japan is about the same physical size as California, but has more than 3 times the population on only 33% of available land (due to the forested mountainous nature of the country). My neighbors are not worried about a lower population given this last point.
From what I have read and heard from experts thus far, they are continuing to innovate toward solving their internal issues, while keeping the attributes that the world envies, such as safety, low crime rates, cleanliness, etc. The only major threat to Japan (and democratic countries in the Asia - Pacific region, come from 2 Asian countries that have ABSOLUTELY NO HONOR or appreciation for international law.

Why is it that the vietnamese people were the only ones to get hit by napalm? Why is it that whenever a country decided to have a worker’s revolution, for some reason a fundementalist fascist was aided by the west to counter those revolutions like in Korea, Cuba, bolivia, etc. ? Could it be that, the leadership in the west have some ulterior motive as to why they’re really pushing this china bad propaganda? I think so. When China retaliated with its own military drill, Japanese politicians will use this as an excuse to expand its military to counter China. The US will be glad to allow it as they wish to use Korea and Japan to batter China in a battle of attrition. The US plan is to use Japan and Korea as battlefields so that their mainland could be spared from destruction. Ukraine is a fine example of how the US supply them with weapons to battle Russia without even sending a single soldier to defend it. The naïve majority of Japanese still think The US is their savior and helps to defend their territories. Taiwan and China's relationship have been status quo for decades, only in recent year, does the tension seems rising. It has to do with the rise of China as a global power, directly threatening the US position. As part of the plan to halt China's grow, upscale the tension and use Taiwan to contain China's grow in the South China Sea. The security they offer is just a form of money made empty talks. The more Japan strives for peace, the more dominant countries with hegemonic ambitions perceive Japan as incapable of taking action and become emboldened. What have they learned from wars? Do they want to return to a world dominated by violence once again?

There are people in Japan who oppose the presence of US military bases. Of course, a country should be defended by its own citizens and military forces. However, if Japan were to expel the US military from its bases, how would Japan protect itself?
They genuinely believe that if we disarm and remain defenseless, invaders will do nothing and understand us if we engage in dialogue. Unfortunately, the current Japan, which can only defend against incoming missiles, is unable to deter violence from other countries.

I'm very happy for Japan. As a Mexican, I know very well how does it feel to not being able to defend yourself against aggressors, specially how a normal citizen is so hopeless when their government cannot defend the country you live in.
Japanese people are one of the few most fascinating societies in the world, one of the few really civilized ones too, so I want them to be able to defend themselves against the bully China has become. The same goes to the Philippines, Vietnam, Indonesia and Malaysia. If they don't want to become Chinese puppet states, they need to invest in their military because of how inflexible and oppressive China is in the region.
I wish the best to them, and a lot of strength for what's to come.

In front of my old man's house in Tucson lived an old breed marine vet, his name was John "Chuck" Chuckleford. He'd been my grampa's friend since like the 70's and was always at my gramp's. I honestly LOVED and still cherich his WWII stories (one of my childhood's best treasures). Something I'll always remember is the fear in those old blue eyes EVERY time he spoke about the japanese imperial army. He felt big respect and fear of bushido discipline, the way he described it. Somehow the image of the two guys running with bushes on camo on 1:07 gave me deep chills, I had to pause for a moment. An image similar to that is what Chuck saw. He passed away close to 15 years ago, a true friend and hero. RIP Chuck. SEMPER FI.

This documentary gave a fair representation of both sides. Well done. I believe two nations can not have proper diplomatic relations without a strong enough military to defend themselves from the nation it is talking to. When a country has respect and trust and is willing to cooperate with the other government, attempting diplomacy with military power becomes an afterthought. Still, China needs to care about these things, and they clearly don't. So to maintain peace, at least over in Japan, it is necessary to maintain a strong military.

Something that tends to be overlooked in discussion of today's Japanese militarization is the longer view of what led the country to be a major belligerent in WWII: in the 19th century they left a long period of isolation when Western forces came with steamships and artillery demanding unequal treaties as part of their colonial projects. The treaties were a humiliation and spurred a vast reorganization of society in the Meiji period, which put Japan on the path to becoming an expansionist industrial empire. The aftermath of WWII was simultaneously an opportunity for Japan to rebuild along pacifist lines, and also a second humiliation for imperialists. So today's rearmament is a kind of echo of the past - "history rarely repeats but often rhymes". Even with the call of nationalist fervor in play, it's not going to have precisely the same outcomes since the demographics and economic concerns are all different: WWII Japan had many young men and its industry demanded oil, today it's rapidly aging, several other energy resources are available, and while elements of colonial interest still exist globally, they tend to use softer power projection methods - base-building, aid and infrastructure spending, etc.
It's become more difficult for tensions to escalate in the way that the World Wars did because Pax Americana has created frameworks for coexistence that, for the most part, everyone still wants to keep. And you can see aspects of that in the Russian-Ukranian conflict: Ukraine's allies have made larger and larger commitments, in essence, to say, "no, nobody in Europe can annex their neighbors anymore". In terms of direct cost-benefit, letting Ukraine get taken over would have been cheaper for just about everyone, so what remains is principle. And that may be tested in Asia soon, too, if China decides to make a move. As much as the BRICS nations are getting pulled together by dint of being pushed away from the American system, there's no illusion of world conquest along ideological lines, since they also experience the same kind of need for coexistence in global trade: it's easier to just punish whoever throws the first punch because they're getting in the way of business.

They were always playing catch up. This is exactly the reason that WWI also started. The issue then as is now, the major world powers only want them at the table and will slap down others trying to level the playing field. Japan lacked a lot of the resources the other nations had, due to its size, and was modelling itself on Western Empires. Of course, that is not vindicating what Japan did, but we must examine why. It is the same as what is happening with China today. Not defending China's actions internally or internationally, but when the Western nations put so many military borders and bases around it, China is naturally going to get a bit itchy.
