  • Hey everyone! This is our second installment of our new series we are calling now officially calling "Gears & Beers" , formerly known as Alcohol & Audi C7 Owners. That name sucked, and I shamelessly stole Gears & Beers from our local monthly VW/Audi Get Together.
    Moving on... Today's episode is a guide for those of you that may be thinking about buying, or have just recently purchased a C7 Audi of some kind. This breakdown goes over all of the typical things that can go wrong with the car, as well as how to spot them. I do not talk about modifications in this video, but plan to in a separate video in the future.
    As always, if there is anything I left out that you want to know about or think I should have mentioned, please comment below so we can discuss. I do realize I left out discussion on the transmission options for these cars, and honestly that was an oversight on my behalf. I guess that's a good excuse to do a video on the transmissions in the future (A6/7's & RS cars got the ZF-8, while the S6/S7 vehicles got DSG).
    Please leave me some suggestions about what you'd like to see discussed in future G&B Videos!
    ---------------------------------------------------------------------------------------------------------------------------

      Seriously thought it was my phone haha. New A6C7 owner here. She does have 130k on her but I got her cheap $12k for prestige. If you happen to see this awesome! But if so any tips of things I should replace or mod asap? I bought from a private dealer and I have the carfax but of course it doesn’t say exactly what was replaced/fixed/updated so thinking of what to do. I was a tech and aware enough of spark plugs,oil change,brake pads and the general maintenance when buying a used vehicle but really trying to start it out right before I go stage one IE in the following week. Appreciate any input from any owner or techs. Thank you.

      Great video. Nearly every item mentioned I’ve dealt with on my C6 A6…which is why I ended up pondering a C7.5 A7/S7. Currently on the other side of an engine replacement, test pipes, and resulting loud exhaust (will and x pipe solve the noise?). Not sure if I want to mess with all this is all again….maybe there’s a selling point for an EV😩

    Absolutely the most comprehensive and thorough video on Audi A6 C7-C7.5 out there. Many videos cover individual A6 issues, but your video hits them all, including issues I wasn't even aware of. Got my CPO 2018 a few months ago, my first Audi. This is from a guy that's only ever had Hondas and Toyotas and does his own maintenance. Having an A6 can be intimidating.

      @@dantespez I bought it CPO from Audi with 17K miles. It's a highway cruiser with a very smooth ride. I upgraded the front sway bar, but it still flt a little boat-like. Got great gas mileage, usually in the low-mid 30's, mostly highway. At 18K or 19K the water pump failed. It was covered under warranty. At 23K the rear-view mirror auto-dimming stopped working. It was covered under warranty. I was anxious about owning it long-term. I usually keep my cars for a long time and put full front PPF and tinted windows, about $2000. The three cars I have owned and later sold had 220K, 256K, and 190K miles on them. I wasn't anxious about what would fail after warranty and the cost, so I traded it in with about 35K and got a Camry V6. I didn't want a hybrid or a turbo and it seems like most cars are going in that direction.

    Great video, one thing for those who haven't replaced their pcv yet is audi extended the warranty coverage for pcv valves on certain model year 2013 to 2016 vehicles with 3.0t and 4.0t engines to 10 years or 120,000 miles. I've got 2 years or 18,000 miles left, I'm willing to bet dealers would try to get you on the thermostat and waterpump since the pcv valve is covered lol

    Being a former Audi tech I think you covered all the issues quite well. Especially talking about the timing chain tensioner issues and well as the oil screen issues on the 4.0 engines. I can’t stress enough about the oil screens especially like you did as well. Just to put in perspective if someone is looking to buy a S badge car with a 4.0 and looking to tune it. Basically if those turbos fail on those engines it’s a very costly endeavor. At my old shop we would quote around $10,000 to replace the turbo pack on a 4.0. That price is mostly the parts. The turbos from Audi where about $8,500, then the remainder being labor on price. So even for a DIY person it can still really hurt the wallet. Again great content and being also a C7 3.0 owner myself, I look forward to more content.

      Thank you! I hope you stick around as I could always use the input of experienced techs that work on these cars.
      Side question: have you replaced the exhaust valve stem seals on a 3.0t? M fairly sure mine are toast. Looks like the engine has to come out to remove the cams. I burn about a liter of oil every 1k miles, but only on deceleration.

    • @MrWolverine46
      @MrWolverine46 2 года назад +3

      @@AudiC7Owners I’ve never done any head work on the 3.0T sorry. Have plenty experience replacing the water pumps, thermostats, PCV valves, and a few upper timing chain tensioners for the cams, also plenty of pre coolers due to people getting rocks chucked into them. Usually the senior techs in my shop with 15+ years experience on Audi for the heaver jobs. Even then we usually had the heads sent out to get reworked if needed. But if you do decide on tackling those seats you will need the the timing tool kit which consists of tensioner pins, a couple L type brackets with bolts to hold the cams in place and the crank pin to hold the crank. Also when reinstalling the cams and reinstalling the cam gears and adjusters be sure to follow the procedure exactly. Otherwise you could not get all the slack out from one side of the chains and it could through it out of time on initial start up. Usually it won’t throw it out enough to be detrimental, but it will make the engine run funny and throw a CE light. Also I know that the heads can be removed without removing the engine. It's a bear, but it can be done. It would be a lot easier with the engine out though. I still have access to the factory books for the procedure if you need the step by step guide.

    Wow. Thanks for providing such an in-depth look into the ownership and maintenance of these C7’s.
    I am considering a 2013 a7 3.0T with 90,000 miles. The car is on its second owner who has already replaced the valve cover gaskets, PCV, timing seal, brake booster, water pump, and recently changed the trans and diff fluids. Oil changes every 5,000 with LiquiMoly.
    A few things I hadn’t considered needing eventual replacement that you noted were timing chains themselves (not just the tensioner), control arms, motor mounts, and cats…
    Such a beautiful machine, but man… I’m not sure I can stomach the maintenance without the DIY wherewithal (and probably neither can the current owner lol).

    The problem I have discovered with FCP Euro is that they may have a lifetime warranty but that's only useful as long as they sell the replacement parts. As the cars get older they stop offering the parts and there may be no replacement option there. I'm seeing this with several of the things I purchased for my D2 S8 and C4 S4 (which btw, the 2.2 AAN is the best engine Audi ever built - ha). Anyhow, since the C7 is still relatively new you likely have a few years before things start vanishing and making the lifetime warranty a bit of a moot point. If you're intending to keep the car for the long haul, consider building a stock pile of the hard to find spares. Audi has a rather miserable track record of "supporting" their classic models here in the USA unlike brands like Porsche, Mercedes and even BMW.

    • @AudiC7Owners
      @AudiC7Owners  2 года назад +1

      That's always a risk, but with this motor being so popular in the b8/sq5/c7 community I don't see people stopping support for it for a very long time

    Just wanted to leave my nugget of information that I believe is very important for those of you that may go to harbor freight to get the sandblasting unit to clean your intake valves. I purchased the red 110 lbs pressurized media blaster unit. I realized that there was metal media that must have been used to test the unit at the factory. It was really difficult to take it out of the canister even after multiple runs with water to rinse it out. After figuring out that there was still media inside, I decided I didn't feel safe to use it in my engine and ended up using the zip tie method. I checked other units of the same kind and they all had the metal media inside.
    Be careful guys!

    Quick question, I’ve been following your page for awhile now. Great stuff! But I just replaced my water pump since it failed about 3 months ago. Now all of a sudden I’m loosing coolant again, but no leaks nor can I smell any coolant burning. Could it be my thermostat? Pcv? Or can a rock damage my Inter cooler? If you aren't seeing any visible signs of a leak you need to look into your pcv failing and leaking coolant into your oil. Check the link in the description to VanCity Audi's video to see what I'm taking about.
      But make sure you also remove your skid plates to check for leaks over night so any leak makes its way to the floor.

      No worries. I'm still working on getting to fix it to re-upload the video.
      Believe it or not, but the clicking isn't in the original audio files, so it is happening somewhere in editing/exporting. Super frustrating.
