What makes DSG Farts Happen?

- Today we talk about why (DSG) Dual Clutch Transmissions Pop (Fart) inbetween shifts. If you have ever heard a MK7 GTI or an Audi S4 zoom past and let out a popping noise in between shifts, you know exactly what a DSG transmission sounds like. Everyone likes to call them "DSG Farts," and today we explain why they happen.
Thanks to everyone from Facebook/Instagram who submitted their cars DSG farts for the video!!

That's a keeper.

Underrated comment, my guy! 🤣😂
NO, as it burns in the exhaust.
So unchecked combustion hmm how did that pass emissions and also surely that would reap havoc on the catalytic converter
Oh and with DSG farts, check for skid marks.
I always wonder why childish humor like this ends up being the top comment on videos like this ?
One might say that the absence of skid marks may indicate the absence of driving enjoyment 😎
@@birdmannichols939 So he didn't mean the drivers of a DSG then?

Shifts are so fast; the engine has to cut spark between them... DSGs are better for fuel economy; throws raw fuel into the exhaust.
Things aren't adding up here.
I think the amount of fuel they throw out to the exhaust would be substantially lower than the amount of fuel you waste while holding in the clutch pedal in a regular manual
just bought a Golf 7.5 GTI upgrade from a polo 6r GTI, and the DSG farts on stock are soooooo sick dude !!! love the farts! farting all the way to the petrol station
Papa Mabotja I thought the 7.5 GTI has no DSG farts anymore? But the overall sound is louder and better i heard. I ordered one too.
@@Codename.996 bro! 7.5 GTI farts are so loud on stock especially shifting from gear 1 to 2 at 4k-5k rpms woohoo its awesome you'll love your 7.5 dude
Papa Mabotja Haha okay, i hope they sound as good as you are telling me. You sure you got the 7.5 with OPF an DSG7 ?
@@Codename.996 just check my instagram @papamabotja you'll see I've added a couple IG stories of the car under "Lynk" I have a video there from outside doing a small pull you'll hear the dsg far on that video and you'll see photos of my car ... you'll confirm if it's the correct version or not.
However I'm in south africa so we dont have any laws and regulations for loud exhausts. So maybe VW turned it down for your side of the planet.
Farting all the way to the petrol station 🤣🤣🤣🤣🤣😂
You can go without DSG-Farts, but it is something the customer of "sporty" cars want. It is an additional function of the engine ECU, just like the farts you hear when you lift your foot off the throttle. Here, a more or less random pattern is used to inject some gas which is not ignited by the spark plugs. So not mandatory, just for the sounds.
So what you say is we can have the same effect by cutting fuel and not only the spark right? And the car wouldn't burn unnecessary fuel (and of course no farting noises)
It is and it is not... The thing is, all DSG cars, or cars with double clutched automatic gearboxes, can produce those farts. Mostly those farts are absorbed by the resonator. Once you delete the resonator, the farts are audible. You would be able to code it away, but then you'd increase fuel-consumption and stress on the engine and transmission.
It sounds so bad i can't believe people it's cool when its not
I think it sounds good
Sounds great
Sounds expensive to fix 😄
What sounds good is something like a Porsche 917 going through the gears. This sounds like a sound glitch in a game except its real life.
So then is this phenomenon on female driven dsg cars still farts or can they opt for queefs ?

Nice explanation! One question: why doesn't this harm the catalytic converter? On carbureted cars from the 90's, running too rich could cause the catalytic convertor to get too hot (burning raw fuel), resulting in an expensive repair (new cat, to replace the burned out one). Why doesn't DSG cause this problem? Is is because the # of shifts (and therefore # of DSG farts) is so low, when compared to rich running cars which let raw gas into the cat on every cycle?
It's tiny so it only degrades them instead of destroying them like anti lag
The DSG farts in my s3 with decat is naughty 😍
Don't get a DSG tune. It took mine away :(
@@911airsoftdude no way! Who was it tuned by. Its soon to be stage 2 mine with the TCU tune so im hoping it doesnt 😕
@@cameronjamieson2651 just the regular COBB tune. Yeah, I have to hold the revs out before shifting and it will do it but its definitely not as loud as pre-tune.
@@911airsoftdude try to use manual. i had a dsg tune it doesnt fart when transmission is in sport but in manual it farts like pre-tune
Thats why I will never get a DSG. I dont care if they're faster than manual. They sound so bad.
Honestly I've never noticed that sound on my '09 A3 Cabriolet. Might just take it for a drive now and see if it does it.
Thats what driving means to me rather it be fun and sound good over being the fastest
Not a huge fan of the DSG sound, but it’s growing on me. Upshifting on a manual car with an exhaust sounds so much better with the snap, crackle, and pops
so if it can upshift without farting as evident from the launch control videos, then why does it not use this method all the time? Perhaps due to more wear and tear?
Is there a benefit to the ignition cut as opposed to using the clutches to slow down the engine? Is the second method how DSG's work on TDI models (since there's no spark to cut?)
I thought dsg sounded good before. Now after watching this video, all I hear is farts!
You have ruined this for me! 😂 Haha
My manual S1 makes similar farts on up shifts if I get close to redline.
Connor Robinson my manual A3 started doing it once i raised my rev limiter to 7000
I see a GTi golf Manuel that does
Let me first start to make you clear that not only dsg or dual clutch cars make those farts.
I have a bmw 328i f30 with the 8hp zf gearbox and it farts even louder than those golf's. My car is no dual clutch and yet it shifts very quick and makes loud farts. Launch control as the same, it doesn't fart anymore. Instead of calling it dsg fart, we should call it dct fart.
I've owned a MkV GTI for 7 or 8 years and I still love the sound it makes
How do you get a mk7 with DSG farts? I tried to buy a few but they are all quietly and no farts :(
Do you know why?
@@soulmateseverywhere6309 put it in sport mode and use the flappy paddles and give it a good rev between changing gears

Anti lag is awesome though 👌
Who loves the smell of their own farts?
Gawd I breathe so deep I almost pass out ,irs akin to a good hit from a bong. 😂
Also,as long as you dont get any fart particulates on ya I dont see a problem 😂
I hear this at night sometimes I always know what it its straight away :)
Yes. It's the sound of somebody who bought a car on finance. 😹
I'll never get the fascination with upshift 'farts'. Why would anyone buy a $50K luxury-sports sedan to amuse themselves with 3rd grader antics.
I just drive around and fart on my own.
Hey Guys, there is a lot of misinformation in this video.
First of, the "farts" are purely for aesthetic purpose, they do nothing for the speed of shifting, it is all for show. Same goes for downshift crackles on for ex AMGs or BMWs
Secondly, you might have noticed that when you use launch on for ex a Audi S4, you will not hear the farts, that is because they use the inertia in the drivetrain to help acceleration. They to this by simply slamming the cluch closed on the nest gear without cutting or limiting torque, you will get a "lurch" but it will aslo make you accelerate faster.
And lastly, its not about ignition timing, it's all about DIRECT INJECTION timing, the nice crackling sound you hear that you call farts are only possible on direct injection engines. This is why older cars cant really produce this noise.
What happens is that the direct injection timing is retarded and basically shoot a very small amount of fuel info the cylinder while the exhaust valve is open, making a nice small pop in the exhaust when it self ignites.
Bangs from retarded ignition and/or Ignition cut on regular port injected engines are significantly louder, and much more violent in nature since its basically fires of a full cylinder worth of air and fuel after its been compressed. There is no way to regulate the amount of bang like in the DI systems
Also, stop referring to these sounds as DSG farts, they are called direct injection exhaust crackle
Great video I love to fart 💨
"What are pops and bangs?"
"engine misfire, but deliberate"
Hey Paul, funny enough, my mk7 golf 1.8T makes shifts farts too above 3K RPM even though it is not a DSG :) I had to install a GTI exhaust to be able to hear them
Did you do the Downpipe as well or just the Exhaust? I'm thinking of doing the Exhaust on mine for the same effect.
@@MatDupuis3 I have a resonator delete as well, so I still have the stock gti rear muffler
This is true. I have the same car. 2017 Golf TSI 1.8T. Non dsg. And it pops just like DSG. I think you only need a gen3 TSI engine. I have downpipe, resonater and muffler deleted. And it pops so loud lol
Why doesn't a cla 200 petrol with Dct7 gearbox fart?
but mercedes could do same but without farts at all go and listen
Merc make exactly the same noise🤔? Go listen to an A45 AMG with a big exhaust system. Merc still run a lot of auto transmissions in their cars though so maybe that is what you are comparing to?
pk3012 i am talking with stock exhaust not 3rd party one look c43 amg,c63 amg,s63 amg all of them doesnt have fart noise okay maybe a bit but not like all others and upshifts are more pleasing than golfs,...
What about on ZF automatic transmissions? I have a BMW ZF8 speed and it makes lovely farts between shifts
4:50 that clip is the painful reality of thinking you have a fast car lol
lol
I dont think so .. maybe something related to the direct injection stuff why? cuz r32 with dsg makes no farts while both passat 3.6 fsi and Audi 3.2 FSI Quattro does fart 3 of these cars has literally same engine but r32 has no fsi or direct injection. thats what I think :)
Conclusion: ignition cut. Something thats been present in the performance world for years with sequential gearboxes and flat foot shifting
Pretty cool that they managed to get it into automatic and paddle shift transmissions
I have a DSG VW - the best auto transmission there is - I have driven many auto cars - DSG is incredibly smooth. Cannot go without DSG now.
As much as I love my 6MT, I've had DSG envy for a while and next after my GTI will likely be a DSG R.

I'm pretty sure at 2:14 that's me on the left standing on the light post column.
Its unburnt fuel being dumped into the exhaust intentionally to make the noise. It’s part of the ECU calibration.
Non sporty DSG equipped VAG cars don’t make the noise.
It’s theatre to make the sporty cars stand out.

Nick C If you dont have a hot catalytic converter then there will he nothing to burn the raw fuel
James Medina catless
This can’t be good for turbos. Also, wouldn’t that be an emissions issue? How do they get away with that part?
It's a Volkswagen. In due time.
It's probably largely burning and catalysing in the catalysts, but short answer, no it's not good for emissions. It's also probably not good for the turbos lol. But like the other commenter said, "It's a VW. In due time" xD
VW and making emissions? You can only have one
@@NickDittes the catalyst is fine. It's designed to take care of unburned fuel. And it isn't necessarily bad for the turbos either, because the primary effect is simply that they stay spooled when the next gear engages, which means more power.

My manual mustang sometimes does this between shifts.
The fart sound is unacceptable
Great video, i love the farts lol
Who tf drives an GTi/R at Stock tho
Right on seeing this vid , I thought about cutting off fuel, instead of spark. Going thru' the comments, someone already said the same thing - to which a reply was about lean mix. BUT - Is 0 fuel lean mix? No fuel = no lean burn issues?
I tend to agree with that. Nothing here is really radical anyway. Stability control systems also control engine torque by modulating fuel, throttle and timing to suit. Obviously no throttle in the case of diesel engines.
The DSG fart is probably the most annoying thing i have heard in a long time.
It’s not really the fart that’s the worst part it’s the acceleration noise in general from all the new turbo engines 👎🏻🙉
I love DSG farts, but unfortunately they're no longer heard in more recent models fitted with an OPF - it's more like a "pop" now...

Manual stands for pure driving pleasure...🕹️🕹️
Manual is the best by far. Maybe not for the traffic light grand prix, but there is far more involvement and fun driving a manual that far outweighs any benefit of shaving a few milliseconds off an gear change.
Maybe if people spent their entire lives at a drag strip and every fraction of a second counts.. but in the real world there is much more to a drivers car than getting super fast shift times.

It sounds simply bad and ugly.
BMW’s do this that don’t have dct boxes but full auto
Because we have come so far with Automatic transmissions, it shifts really quick that they need to cut timing thus the farting noises.

Why do some sound like a shap short crack and others sound like a longer burble? How can you modify the sound of the DSG “fart”

@@nocll34 Without spark, there is no combustion. Without combustion, there is no heat. Am I right?
@@Sk1ds87 My bad, I didn't even read it properly but there probably is still a reason auto manufacturers don't do that
@@nocll34 on the channel engineering explained, Jason had an official answer from Hyundai: the fart have for purpose to keep the turbo spooling during shifts and minimize turbo lag. Personality, I can understand the reasoning behind this if those farts were limited to a "sports mode" and only happen during high load, launch control, etc. But actually, it seems that modern cars tend to fart all the time, at any load, any mode and even in traffic, which is imo just unnecessary and somewhat pathetic. It ruins fuel economy, is very irritating if you live in a neighborhood infested with cars like these and almost none of those drivers will ever make their way to a circuit where that gadget probably makes sense. But hey, some (dumb?) consumers like it, so auto makers will ofc deliver👌
