    My biggest issue right now seems to be just having a steady hand. Especially during the lining steps such as edge highlights and in general painting around deep edges, it seems my hand just can’t hold a brush. Any methods or mindsets to sort of relax the hand or train it to be more steady?

    • @alexpaintstinythings
      @alexpaintstinythings  2 месяца назад +2

      Absolutely - the mindset part is about not worrying and being OK with messing up - but the physical aspect is about getting a braced, comfortable position. For me this is elbows by my side or resting on my chair's armrests, wrists against the edge of the desk, and I usually have my fingers resting against either a part of the model that's not been painted yet, or a part of whatever I'm using to hold it (or sometimes even my other hand) - that gives me an anchord to use which doesn't move independently of the miniature - then all brush movement becomes relative to the model. It's probably not the easiest to explain without showing you but you're welcome to jump onto the discord and I can elaborate. I could also do a video on it at some point since it's a small, but quite important thing :)

    this video was far far better, really well presented with really valid and good points. Everything you bought and used is easy to get and while your experience shines through that is really the only difference.

    How do you put the paint from the tub onto the container lid without wasting too much?

    • @alexpaintstinythings
      @alexpaintstinythings  2 месяца назад +1

      Thank you - glad you find it useful :)
      To answer your question, honestly I got used to how much paint I use - and it's always less than you expect - but the reality is, I still probably waste a fair amount. It's all relative though - I don't think I've ever got to the end of a paint pot - MAYBE a nuln oil wash, or a black or white, but generally even if I was to scoop out 3-5 times as much paint as I needed every time, I'd still only be using a small amount and I don't stress too much about wasteage. A few quid for a new tub of paint isn't the worst thing in my book. If you err on the side of less, you can always get more - so if it's a concern, definitely put less on the palette than you expect to use, and you might get used to knowing ahead of time. Hope this helps! Happy to elaborate further if you like - feel free to jump on the Discord, and we can chat in more depth :)

All the brands are the same for new painters, just avoid the ones that give you extra small bottles, reaper and duncan come to mind. I recomend a bottle you can squeeze to get some clean water, so you dont feel tempted to thin with your cleaning water.

    Crazy timing. Just bought this set last week as my first attempt to get into the hobby.. Just laid down the 2nd base coat.
    My question. I noticed you did a black base coat and then did the blue sections. Do you still do 3 base coats and then go for details? Seems like you did the black base coat and then went straight for edge highlights and some of the easier details. How many "base coats" do you do normally ? Outside of the limits of the introductory kit .

    • @alexpaintstinythings
      @alexpaintstinythings  2 месяца назад +1

      Hey welcome to the hobby! Good question - I guess for me the black was strong enough because very little was going to end up black in the end (just dark recesses mostly) - so it was less important for me to get that coat looking good - when a coat of paint is going to be visible, it's better to get it looking nice and smooth with good coverage - that might mean 2 coats in some cases, but lighter colours often take more (i've done 5-6 coats of yellow in the past!!) - darker colours usually need less, but really it's also down to the coverage on the paint itself. The more you thin the paint with water, the more coats you'll need but the smoother it'll look when it's done - the less water, the less coats, but the thicker the paint and the more bubbly and texture-filled the finish will be (which is generally less desirable) - normally outside this starter kit I'll prime, then I'll lay down 1-2 base coats and each layer will get a few coats, depending on the colour and thickness of the paint. - sadly there's no easy answer here, but I'd be happy to help more if required - feel free to jump onto the Discord and we can for sure discuss further :) - thanks for the comment!!

    It's kind of weird how this starter set technically doesn't include enough colours to finish both to 'table top' standards by GW definition.
    Especially considering there's no flesh colour for the face.
    Also : why the heck isn't GW including contrast paints in these sets ?
    It really feels like these kits have the potential to destroy enthusiasm for the hobby instead of acting as a starting point when you look at the quality of the things in them. I suspect that buying that starter paint set is more value and fun for a beginner.
