It is, I was super surprised - I will say priming with a spray feels essential though, otherwise you'll wreck a brush trying to cover the whole thing in a good consistent basecoat.
These videos have been instrumental for me starting out at this stuff mate, i went infernus marines now im onto my nids and i go at them in a fair amounts of confidence thanks to you.
Amazing videos. Just getting into this hobby and I’ve watched a ton of videos but you have something special going on here. Love the direction of this channel.
Well done sir. I just started painting for the first time 2 weeks ago. Got the Ultimate Starter set as bday gift. Am I tired of basing in wraithbone? Hell yes I am I need a can.
I've jus started painting miniatures and was wondering if you could try out some of the epic encounters boxes I've recently got the serpent folk minis to paint as I don't play ttrpgs !! Found these videos extremely helpful and down to earth for a beginner to watch and wanted to see the results of the epic encounter boxes ngl
Great news! I've reached out to Steamforged about the Epic Encounters boxes and will do a video on painting up some of the Serpent Folk minis for you! :)
(The community really needed a sweary sarcastic scot imo) ALSO why the heck haven't you done a video talking about your entry for golden daemon just saw it on instagram, cmon lad I challenge you to rescue the most disgusting piece of shart you can find on ebay (the shopping on ebay part could be part of the video also). I challenge you to paint a space marine....err... blindfolded? Left handed? I challenge you to do a wacky kitbash way out of your comfort zone I challenge you to make some scenery out of some random bollocks you find I challenge you to paint something only using base primary colours and mixing yourself Basically just more vids enjoying them, enjoying the shit talking mostly honestly. Feel like you just doing random silly hobby stuff with funny commentary would be ace.
Thank you! I have some skaven from the Skaventide box but I don't have any plans to paint them on video yet - but let me add it to the requests and if there's a technique that works, I'll find a way :)
Im really liking all your videos and here i am in the comments again! My main takeaways seem to be the things you say around the brush, which reaffirm my own recent thoughts and new brushes I recently got and just started using to much greater success. You mention the brush being a size 2. I have found i really like using a size 1 or 2 depending on how detailed im getting. Do you use a size 2 for most of it usually?
Size 1 or 2, depending ont he brand. Some brands are made a bit small, so it really depends - when you get down to mm differences in brush tip length it's down to personal preference :)
This may be beyond the purview of this channel but could you do a video about how to use and maintain brushes and paints? I want to get into painting minis but I haven't picked up a paint brush since I was a little kid and find that I have no idea how to use and maintain any basic equipment i would have let alone anything like watering down paints on a pallet. Your starter kit video really hooked me on actually getting into the hobby but I want to have a basic understanding on what im doing before I open my wallet.
Already got one planned :) - need to make sure I cover plenty though so still in the writing phase at the moment. Thank you though I can definitely work all this in to cover :)
@@alexpaintstinythings appreciate the quick reply, your channel has been a god send for someone getting back into the hobby taking a long hiatus! And your attitude has been amazing love the honesty.
These turned out great. I'm going to get some new brushes soon and see those Cryptic ones are cruelty free which interests me. Other ones I've been eyeing up are the Rosemary & Co. Any idea how they might compare?
Very similar IMO. I’ve been enjoying the CC ones - and they are lovely people too. I find R&Co a WEEE bit long for my liking but I know lots of people who love them.
@@alexpaintstinythings That's really good to know. Thanks dude. I think I'll take a punt on the Cryptic ones when I'm ready - nice to support a UK business too. o7
Would make more sense then buying the kit, just wondering if I should venture outside of citadel paints, dropper bottles are a big part of wanting to switch. Had to rebuy 3 paints this month because of drying out. Wether that’s user error or not
They shouldn’t be drying out that quick but many people do prefer dropper bottles. AK make great paint for sure. I do have all the paints in that starter set BTW so could give you a rundown for sure. Only problem I see for beginners is having to find closest match type stuff for tutorials since many will reference citadel colours.
I saw almost all of your videos now. Im curious about your filming setup. Doing this tiny stuff is not easy and your focus is almost always on point (only sometimes on thumb ^^). If I had to nag, I'd say it's a bit grainy especailly in the backround. Keep it up. I'll stick around, tho I'm on the lore/book side, not (yet) the painting stuff.
@@alexpaintstinythings great. Looking forward to it. I'm doing RUclips on the side for work. Don't change too much in one go. Nothing worse than spending 3 or 4 figures and having the stuff laying around because it's not working for you. As I said, I would try a ring light. If you want more light from the side, I would go for a two tone LED behind a lantern style softbox as close to your model as possible. You do you. But please, show your setup one day :)
Ahhh now i see why people have a 'pile of shame'... I'm currently gunning for Thousand Sons as I love my Dusty Boys however, I've been advised they are indeed the most consistently tedious and infuriating models to paint. Gonna have fun spending an entire 2 weeks painting 1 rubricae a day! Huh, i just found a new motto. 1 Rubric Marine a day keeps the pile of shame away!
Hey Alex! I really appreciate u are maiking many videos for noobs like me. It sure helps a lot when it comes to painting time.
My pleasure!!
I also learned loads about the contrast paint there!
Ah great! - time to buy it ALL! :D
love the quality, voice over, everything mate ! :)
Ah thanks mate! Much appreciated :)
It’s crazy how easy they seem to paint up.
I gotta start looking for a scheme now and slap some paints on the few ‘Gaunts my daughter and I have.
It is, I was super surprised - I will say priming with a spray feels essential though, otherwise you'll wreck a brush trying to cover the whole thing in a good consistent basecoat.
Made up you’ve done the Tyranid one, was waiting for this, great vid
Ah delighted, thank you!

Ah that’s great to hear :) really glad I could help you!!
Fantastic video Alex. I thought the 2nd Tyranid looked the best of the bunch. Keep up the great work!
Ah nice that's good - it was the one I felt had most put into it (although was still quick to do!) - thank you :)
To watch painting with that music... [chef kiss]
Too much fun with the camera there at the end Alex 😆
Sometimes you gotta just muck about eh?! :D

Oehh this is gonna get in handy for the nids I got as a KT solo horde. Big fan of the second one.
Fab!!
Really enjoyed the video - second method looks great and you've inspired me to give it a try! Thanks mate
Awesome! You’re welcome to share your results on discord if you like!

Really fun to just watch you paint while u rant about bad citadel brushes :)

Although i now paint to a display piece standard. I have 22 nids to paint up for a diorama, and this will be perfect.
Oh yeah. 20mins tops a ‘nid. You’ll be done in no time!
I kinda like the first one. Frieza had the best alien color scheme.
I’m torn. I think the first one turned out so much better than I expected that I’ve really warmed to it!

I know you don’t wanna be the “beginner set guy” but would you cover the AK interactive Beginner set of paints? It’s an interesting set of colours
I’ll look it up. I’ve probably already got the paints - I have the full AK set already so could assimilate the set if necessary :)

It was like that when I got here honest!
I swear officer... I never touched it...

I forget Citadel do a paint for Dry brushing, is it worth it?
Nope. Don’t waste your money :D - get the 3 pack from Cryptic Cabin instead!
Tie-ranids does sound cooler!
yeah like dinosaurs. I always assumed that was the case :D

The white is creepier. More fleshy xenos thing going. Ala Prometheus quadrapus. Or deacon. When it comes to nids creepier da betta.
Agreed. I guess it’s also monochromatic because of the single colour plus white. That’s definitely a vibe!
