Duncan Rhodes manages to explain and demonstrate three separate painting philosophies many different painting techniques in a 24 minute stream. I shouldn't be surprised at this point, but I still am. Well done, sir!
I first started painting minis 24 years ago. Went through the blotch-painting phase and got somewhat better... slowly. Then... life happened. Studying, career, house, kids. Along the way the hobby faded. But about 6 months ago I started watching these painting tutorials and was awestruck by the skill guys like Duncan have. By now I must've watched hundreds of videos from DRPA, Table Top Ready and Squidmar. So, finally, just a minute ago, I clicked "purchase" on a sizable order of paints, brushes and a box of Space Marines (tactical squad). Thanks for reigniting my interest in this hobby. Cheers!
That dip method really creates a fantastic result for such a quick and simple method. Gives me some inspiration to finally assemble and paint the Tyranid half of my Leviathan box.
This guy is the nicest looking and sounding guy ever, he walks through and gives step by step instructions and has the colors that he's using everywhere.
Funny thing: while Nids are an army where you wanna be able to paint things fast due to how many models you'll be painting, I won my first painting competition by going completely ham on one. Was a Hormagaunt that I painted in the style of Behemoth, going a little old fashioned with a very vibrant version of the model. Now, the dip wash model is awesome for how fast it is. You can easily set up a kind of assembly line and bang out 10, 20, maybe even 30 dudes at a time like this.
I just wanted to state, i finally got my hands on some Two Thin Coats paint. And after using every other brand of paint. I think it's the best paint i have ever used. Thank you for producing them. And i hope you get more of your brand out there. I had a devil of a time finding your band thru online stores. I found them at Warpfire. And man i was elated. And satisfied. Its an amazing formula. It flows very well and coats like a dream. It takes very little paint to paint a mini with it. Love it.
I've been watching your videos fir a couple of years now as I love watching them coming to life, and you have an incredibly calming voice that I could listen to for hours. However I've just started collecting the odd miniature here and there myself and I'm looking forward to hopefully one day being able to paint as well as this
Love these videos. I just got into Warhammer a few months ago myself and I usually find myself putting one of your videos on when i sit down to paint my Black Templars
Another amazing video!! Much appreciated as I bought the ultimate starter set a few weeks ago and need to get started painting on them. Your videos are amazing and I have watched this one a few times already.
If you are painting and army get an airbrush and then spray the varnish through it. Use AK or AMMO Mig ultra matte varnish, it will look amazing and not take long. An air brush will save you so much money on primer spray cans too.
I was literally just debating adding some Tyranids to my collection but was worried about hours spent painting all the little details on these guys. Thanks Dunc!
I’m a long time Tyranids player. Contrast was a massive win for mass painting hordes, and it’s what I would recommend. It’s worth using the GW sprays as your base over a cheaper product. They hold detail well and something about the surface they give works better with something like contrast that needs to be able to flow.
@@Queldonus Thanks for the advice. Do you add anything to the basecoat spray like a drybrush before adding contrast (something like slapchop) or just allow the contrast to do their job? I've rarely used contrast myself so I'm wondering about what works best. I don't mind spending a little longer on models so long as it's not hours of edge highlighting :)
This could not have come at a better time, I just restarted my Journey with painting models again after almost 10 years now. Beating myself up about getting rid of my first models but hoping that i can rebuild a new army and make it look after better then the slop i made when i was 12. Got myself some Nids with the ultimate set and ima be battling my Dad who's laid claim to the Space Marines, i'm very excited to be painting and playing this awesome game again. Thanks for the Tutorial DRPA
If you ever consider doing this for a future video, I'd definitely like to see a conversion of a Chaos-corrupted AT-ST, I'd be curious to see what direction you could take with that "what-if" concept as a model
Just might have to buy a small box of Tyranids just to try out these methods, also to help my painting techniques. Thanks for the video Duncan.../Cheers!
Just started painting as it’s helping with stress and anxiety, I decided to go with the Behemoth colours and wondered how this would work with the technique you mention in this video due to starting currently with a black base coat
I love the shading the dip methods creates but I don't know if I like that dull, dirty look. I think it could work for certain models but I like the brighter white for the Nids. Still a wonderful, easy technique. Love the video!
Really good video! I personally use a combination of speedpaints and slapchop to paint my mini's because I have a bad shake in my hands and it works well for me. I taught it to a friend who also has a bad tremor and he painted his first mini 50 years after being convinced he could never do it.
Amazing video, as usual. Great close up photography to see actual applications. Your attention to detail is fantastic. Curious, why the switch from Artis Opus brushes?
I tried speed painting some Behemoth Termagants a while back with drybrushing, but the red bodies didn't look vibrant enough. I'd avoided drybrushing with orange because I thought that'd be too much, but maybe I should have.
Your videos are amazing! My daughter and I are getting into minis and your guides help tons! Only flaw is lack of paint for us as I keep ordering the wrong ones as I am colorblind 😢.
This was perfect timing, I have to paint 10,000 points of Hive Leviathan for the Battle Barge Cruise crew. They are basically using the Tyranid force as an NPC faction attacking all other guest armies during a narrative campaign...but I digress...my main issue is painting 10k in a year when I barely could get through my own 2k point orks lol. I am not sure which method I will go with here, probably contrast/speedpaint and accents and washes with these recommended Two Thin Coats since they look so good.
Dip looks great but im curious. Other than the action, whats the difference between dipping and just shading, i.e. why not just broadly paint a shade like Agrax Earthshade over the whole model instead of dipping it? Itll be done faster than 24 hours. Im having trouble understanding the perks of dipping vs just shading.
Good question, but it's the finish it gives. It's an old technique, in fact, some folk back in the old, old days would dip their minis in a wood varnish! Which is something this Dip is similar too (We think lol)
Aside from the finish as mentioned the dip does two other things. First it's a really strong protective layer, they'll take a lot more handling and beating before showing wear and tear. The second benefit it combines the benefits of an oil and acrylic wash. It's sits into the creases and depressions better than a normal wash and has the density to retain a smooth finish when a acrylic wash can be a bit spotty, while also being thick enough to stain everything more evenly than a oil wash would get you without having to put it on thick and wipe off the excess.
Is there a quick way to do hive fleet behemoth in the style of 3rd edition cover art? I'd bet on dry brushing being the best way to do it but I need to give it a go.
Awesome video but can you tell me the shade of the army painter tin of quick shade tried to buy one at local hobby shop & was asked what shade I wanted because there are 2 types, please👍🏻
What's the difference between contrast and the wash? Aren't they both just thin paint that pools in recesses? Can i use them interchangeably? Just built my first box of gaunts since 3rd edition and I'm very nervous to put paint to mini
We did dipping 20yrs ago with regular wood stains (what actually is the army painter dipping stuff just rebranded). I didn’t even varnished to matte, I think the wet-look actually looks quite good and proper for a monster like a nid.
What type of quickshade did you use? My local hobby shop had strong, dark & soft Great tutorial, painting Tyranids has been so daunting, now I actually might get around to it TIA
@@DuncanRhodesDRPA Technical question for you, do you dilute your AP Dips with mineral spirits before use. I had read you should thin it with a 50/50 mixture, but i had semi good results with that. I also went with what I thought would be a more controlled method and brushed it on, but all that did was give it a very dirty appearance. What are your suggestions for proper application of the Dips?
Just a friendly piece of advice -- buy brush cleaner to renew the dry brush bristles. Then you can use the same brush on all colors. Save some $$. :) :)
I literally did that with a sisters squad, so I did a bit of kitbashing and now they’re proxy models for Angela of Death, and I painted up a bunch of Tyranids for NPO models
@ Awesome! I found KT2E a really fun way to explore the Warhammer range, so for example if you loved those Sisters models you could pick up a squad and use them as a team without committing to an army. I know people will argue that there are Novitiates (which are awesome and some of the most fun models I’ve painted), but that’s not the point. Removing so many “basic” options that were fun but not competitive hurt the game imo
@@medugal I contemplated the Novitiates team, but I really like the aesthetic of regular sisters. Since I didn’t realize KT24 dropped literally as I was buying a regular sisters squad, I had to shift gears. I might shift into regular 40k eventually, but so far this seems to be the ticket for me
@ Oh don’t get me wrong, the regular Sister design is sweet and I think you made the right choice. Kill Team is the place to experiment and try out factions you’ve always admired instead of/ before committing to a 40k army (which doesn’t fit my lifestyle due to the time commitment). KT rocks, I just wish GW was more committed to the wishes of their players.

Definitely way more good info available nowadays, almost too much. Happy painting!
The dip method really shines when you show it off. I love the idea of starting out with such bright colors like you've done here.
Great video, I wish one thing, that the 3 figures would have been shown finished together as a comparison.
i came to say this exact thing, bit of a missed opportunity that honestly detracts from the whole video which is otherwise excellent
