I'd personally add a little bit of black to that blue for the first layer, just to make it a bit deeper and then build up from there. You know, doing the most with what's available, if the challenge is to only work with the 4 colors the set provides.

I got this set from my girlfriend for Christmas, had some time off work this week and finally got around to painting them. Absolutely loved it. Ordering my next set soon

Optivisor, used to be Baush and Lomb. Easiest to just put on head and flip down and when you need to see, flip up. I have tried all you have and more, and still the optivisor is my go to.

10:15 is it weird that i like the first one better? i just think the paleness of the white makes it feel more alien to me. when i paint mine i would probably keep the first color scheme and add the dry brushing you did on the second one to the first

My daughter got me this very same kit a few days ago for my 41st birthday, I haven't painted any warhammer models since 1997 but I have thought about it now and then. I have been doing a lot of research of different painting techniques, back then all I had was the eavy metal pics in the codexes and I did what I could to emulate, never even heard of wet pallets and I remember the paint drying up fast. This time around I have decided not to be so strict about the colour choice (I was very strict back then) and I never really liked ultramarines so they will be in different colours, I have bought black primer spray but I want to use the paint included in the pack and as I suspected the brush is not very good so I will order a new one before I start so I have one less thing to blame if it doesn't turn out as great as I imagine it will despite being almost 30 years since the last time..😅

As someone just breaking into TT games and painting, and who very much enjoyed your style of humor in your videos, this was incredibly helpful. I have not braved anything Warhammer to date, only Battletech, but I'm getting my nerves up and having some concept of what I'm stepping into after watching this, I feel moderately more prepared. Might sound like faint praise but it's actually substantial so thanks mate!

Quick question. Do you recommend pre-cleaning the parts with an Ultrasonic cleaner before paint? I do this with my Gundam models and it works great to remove grease and oils.

I've been miniature painting on and off for a few years now - starting with some LOTR orcs and elves, and recently my wife got me a pack of the Assault Intercessors to paint so trying to get back into it Not done any table top gaming since I was a teen, and that was back with the likes of Hero Quest - something I'm trying to find again as I lost access to all the miniatures my Dad had painted for it.

Big fan of Army Painter now. I started, as most people probably do, with Citadel, but I found them a pain to work with in those bottles. Might have just been me, but I found that they all too easily tipped over, and worse still, they had a habit of leaking when shut. The droppers bottle design of Army Painter is far better as you can squeeze just a small amount, and with the mixing balls, a good shake if they have ben sat for a while will soon get the paint flowing again.. This was another issue I had with Citadel in that I found their paints had a habit of either separating beyond repair or just drying up and had to throw a few pots away.

Great video. As someone who not only paints, but does a lot of electronic repairs, I have a set of "YOCTOSUN LED Head Magnifier" lenses from Amazon that I use. Like some of the ones you shows, the downside is the clip on lenses as they can ping off. But the trade off for me, being someone who wears glasses, is that you can swap the legs for an elastic headband and this makes them a lot more comfortable to wear. No batteries needed, as they come with a USB charge lead They do the job, and are far better than a lamp which I found just got in the way and was forever bumping brushes into it which made a mess of the model!

One of the most important thing I learned is that our hobby paints are transparent. Don't fight it, use it!

Friend of mine sucked me to WH40k (I was always more pen and paper rpg guy). After first mini, he told me to wrote date of finish on every base. Within 2months I can already see progress made between my Poxies and a recent War Dog. Imho most important thing should be: do not care about YT vids. You will build up unreasonable expectation of what you should get. Paint it way you like, and fck what others think. You paid for mini, paints and it was your time wasted on it. Screw everyone else :)

I’m going to try the fixes lens glasses, maybe in a couple of different strengths (or Powers). 2.5 and 5 probably. Thanks for this comparison. I use something similar to the changeable/flip lens (you show a picture of them), and yeah after a while, it starts hurting the nose and the headband stretchy part wears out as well. But I like the idea of fixed lens, including safety reasons! Great Video and we’ll done, thanks!!

Really great video, loved the chart @9:20 with the games listed out. For those wanting to start the Warhammer stores are brilliant. The guy who runs my local one is always willing to teach you any of the current games if you go in and ask. Alternatively he will talk to you for hours about paint schemes :D

On those 5x glasses, like you, I’ve also found moving the brush to my palette or water was difficult, so I got a finger palette…just gotta rely on muscle memory for the water😅

I settled on the same one from your thumbnail, but after a year, the rubber on nosepiece disintegrated…so I repadded it with hotglue😅

First model still looks pretty darn good! Shows that you can still achieve good quality minis with a basic starter set. I wonder how long before the brush starts splitting into two points like some of my starter brushes back in 1998 or so did. With no money I just kept using it, added a certain quirk trying to do fine details with one of the tips at an angle haha!
