So basically the Army Painter starter set does what the GW set does not. Gives you everything you need to start. I have never understood why you would have a starter set WITHOUT primer. it is a very basic item for painting.
I’ve been hoping you’d do a starter set comparison. I like that you touch upon things a season painter does as second nature, but a newbie would seriously benefit from knowing. Plus these videos always put me in a great mood 😂
Paint the included miniature too! I picked this starter set up and just primed so far. Having trouble putting paint to plastic though in fear of mucking it up. Would be inspirational to see someone who knows what they're doing to give it a go. Thanks for another great video!
I don't use a brush-on primer, since I live in a place with a nice amount of fresh air, so I use a spray-primer. But it is nice to see that there's a starter set from Army Painter that is worth getting, since I'm a fan of Army Painter to begin with.
Yeah it’s handy for sure. I prefer spraying but for some I guess it’s not possible (or practical) - the starter set is good though and the paints are grand :)
I’m a convert to fanatic and Speedpaint. This set is incredible it covers the essentials well. Reminds me of the old citadel starter sets from the 90’s.
After seeing you use a Hawk brush I ordered a couple...and was so impressed ordered lots of them 😝. 6 x Hawk brushes cost less than one W+N s7 and are just as good if not better. So thanks for that golden brush nugget Alex 👌👏👍😘
GW really needs to work on that starter brush. Like any random Chinese made taklon brush you can get at your hobby store for a dollar or two is better than it. It's really baffling how bad they made it.
I was lucky when I got my starter set 2 years ago. There was a 'sable' brush (definitely natural hair, but not sure it's Kolinski) in mine. That was the standard I came to expect from G.W. brushes. I was very disappointed when I got my wife to pick me another brush up from the local G.W. shop. I asked for the same brush from the starter set, but it was not the brush I expected 😂
i got an old death guard starter set a few years ago and the brush was SO bad to the point i only use it for picking up paint from the pot to put on my wet palette or just as a wash brush... the brush split so quickly within a few weeks :( even the cheap synthetic brushes do better
Bit late watching this. Was going to make the same comment about R&Co brushes. I picked up a few Kolinski Sable and the difference over synthetics is fantastic. However, their Red Dot synthetics are surprisingly good and make for nice workhorse brushes. Very affordable too.
I recently hit the reset switch on my paint collection. Picked up the Fanatic starter, plus a few basic colors its missing (purple, orange, flesh, bone, and a warm brown) i got the speed paint 2.0 starter set as well wtih corresponding colors. In a way its really liberating having a smaller pallet.
@@alexpaintstinythings I never had a starter set I always bought big combo boxes. But so many times I’ve just not started projects because the mountains of paint in front of me. Choice paralysis. Now if only I could find a way to get myself motivated to try airbrushing again.
another great video. I would love to see something on brushes and your technique for keeping the point strong (as best as the brushes allow). But im learning with each video so thank you!
Hey no stress! Glad you liked it - and of course: a good 50% of my audience are in the US, so I like to make sure I can help out with links and stuff where possible!
I've been using AP Speedpaints only so far in really want to get into regular paints like these. Is there an AP warpaint set that's close to a Tau colour pallet by any chance? These are nice as well but not as useful to me right now.
Hmm, I don't think so - it depends on your sept of course but you're probably better with some sort of foundation/beginner set for a black, white and primaries - and then picking up a few specific paints for your Sept's colours.
@@alexpaintstinythings Guess I'll just get this one then and see what else I'll take after. I want to do the red&white ones from the Box art. Thx for the input.
@@ralfsstuff So the red, black and white here will help - you'll probably want an off-white to help with shading on the white panels (something like Citadel Apothecary White will be good) and maybe a few greys on the scale, so you can highlight your black parts, and shade your white parts. :)
I’ll have a look but I’m not sure. I know the Squidmar dudes have curated sets of paint which are great (and some are improved vs the regular bottles you can buy outside of the sets) but they’re just paint and an exclusive mini, no brushes or primer or any other kit. Worth looking into though!
But where would you have got your space marines eh?! - All good, these sets are reasonably affordable for what you get inside - worth picking up IN ADDITION to the GW starter set :)
It’s because the brush is synthetic fibres. I don’t know what the actual process is but it doesn’t happen with natural fibres. If you find out let me know!!
But the brush-on primer was no different to the base blue paint they make you put on the ultra marines to prime them. I am confused about why would it be any better.
Primer is designed to stick better to plastic than non-primer. So it acts as a bond between the miniature and the other paints. Depending on the miniature it will make your paint easier to work with and less prone to "falling off" after drying.
Don't waste your money on any pure synthetic brush, they all suck, even more expensive ones from art stores. The best, cheap brush range ive found so far is the rosemary and co sable blend series 401. These synthetic and real hair blend brushes are great all round, large size selection, and very inexpensive. i bought mine for roughly $5 Canadian each at my LGS.
Nice video, but I think you'd be better off comparing this set to the paints + tools sets that GW sell - this is very similar to the AoS starter paint set, and while that doesn't come with a free mini, if you're new you can get a free one from any (official) warhammer shop so it works out about the same aside from the starter brush lol
You're not wrong - I probably should. I don't have that set so was just comparing the Army Painter set to what I had already - great point though, the Citadel Paints/tools set is probably on par with this if you ignore the paintbrush :D
I take it as my civic duty to be the person in the comments to answer the question no one else dares: to the best of my broad but shallow 40K knowledge, space marines do not, in fact, get aroused. Except maybe the Emperor's Children, but that's Slaanesh territory and honestly you're a braver man than I if you paint a Slaaneshi's nether regions.
I’d say probably more than 25% better too but as someone pointed out I probably should have compared it to the citadel starter paints set but still. :)
Black before silver, BROWN before gold. (makes it warmer and keeps them from looking green-ish) Great work - glad to see the channel grow!
Good shout thank you! :)
Black isn't always a good undercoat for metal, sometimes if you want a bright metal a white undercoat is good
I mean, no hard and fast rules basically. :)

Insane isn't it?! It's literally one of the first htings you need!
It’s so you buy it at their premium price ofcourse
@@sorrysirmygunisoneba sounds about right!

hilarious commentary as always, criminally undersubscribed

Oh hey don’t be scared to go for it - it’s the only way to learn :)
The mini in the set is the first mini I ever painted.Didnt look amazing but turned out well.Just take your time you can do it

Monk chant back - yes! Great video as usual.
haha, had to bring it back :)
The the way you did this video very helpful i am just starting up painting again after 22 years and im excited to try these new paints

Thank you very much!
I just ordered this along with my warhammer starter set, so I have a good array of paints and a variety of minis to practice on 😁
Perfect, have fun! Welcome to the hobby!
Love the video! Great comparison.
I really like Rosemary & Co Brushes they are beautifully made and great value!
They are - good to know they're working for people too :)

Ultramarines wear chastity cages so no worries there

Quick tip: try base coating your gold with brown. Different shades of brown can change the colour of the gold you get.

I am curious what it actually is that creates the hooks on the end of the brush over time? Does anyone know?

Yup as others have said primer is designed to stick to plastic (and other materials) better than regular acrylic paint :)
