I've seen dozens of videos about drybrushing. This is by far the best tutorial. I really need to make a drypalette to check the amount of paint on brush before applying it to the mini
Thank you I was worried people would just think “oh, another drybrush video. Big deal.” So it’s good to hear you thought it different to others you’ve watched. As for the texture board, yes. Get one, it’s so helpful to know you won’t ruin the mini with that first stroke. As for making one, go for it! And in case you just never get round to it, you can always just buy one 😉
I made one out of a cheap food container then hot glued a heap of different things. Timber scraps, mdf, seed pods, sticks etc and even glued some sand onto a smooth surface. Coat of black and ready to use.
I was in my local Warhammer shop yesterday and I was asking about dry brushing techniques because I’ve only been painting minis for a few weeks. Brushstroke was there and offered some advice which has already improved my painting overall. To which I would like to personally say thank you and I will make slowly make my way through your videos and eagerly await any newer content! 👍
The mistake I see a lot of people make is to use one or two shades only. This results in the bristles leaving streaks, even on a properly dried brush. If you want expert level dry brush, use several shades. I use up to 5 on figures and miniatures. As each coat gets lighter, and you dry brush a little less. If you do it right, it looks fantastic. If you do it wrong, it looks crappy and rushed. Done properly you will never see a brush stroke, or streak.
OK, there's two answers to that The first is, a quick clean can be achieved by simply brushing against your texture board. Just brushing like that actually removes 99% of the paint and is the method Artis Opus promotes. Yes, absolutely. You’re spot on. As I said in the video, the illustration was very simplified but intended to make people consider how the brush contacts the surface will make a difference. When choosing between the flat and rounded brushes I did say that they can both achieve the same results but with the flat you need to be more aware of your strokes and contact. I was introduced to tabletop gaming in 1993, but didn't get into it until 1997. Back in the day, drybrushing was used even by the Heavy Metal team! It's really sad that it is such an underappreciated painting technique. I mostly use drybrushing on bases and terrain, but at least three of my armies as well as all of my BFG fleets are painted almost entirely with drybrushing.
Yes, you can paint anything over the top of drybrushing. If you mean, can you use other types of paint to achieve the tinting of pre-shading? Then the answer is still yes but they need to be transparent enough so that when you put them on you can still see the drybrush shading through them. So, you could use inks or washes for example. Just want to ask : if this metallic dry brush also work with larger piece without much small details? To be more precise, i want to work with the armor of the Legend BB Knight gundam
No, I don’t believe that is true. I’ve never had varnish affect my drybrushing. You’re applying the same paint whether it’s with normal application or drybrushing, how can using varnish know the difference? Now! I guess there could be some truth in this if you’re talking about weathering powders. But that’s not down to them being drybrushed on, that would simply be down to them being a powder. It is possible, that if you applied a varnish by brush over weathering powder you could end up brushing off the powder and thereby remove the effect. So, if you’re varnishing weathering powders either airbrush or spray can on the varnish. Other than that, no drybrushing isn’t removed by applying a varnish. I hope that helps
Don't bother with special hobby "drybrushes". Just go to your local dollar store/poundland and get small makeup brushes. They work better and cost 1/20th the price. AO are a way overpriced rip off. You can get the EXACT same brush from Rosemary & Co. for less than 1/2 the price.
Brush choice is very much a personal thing. I firmly believe everyone should find what they like best. Personally I prefer a natural bristle and don’t get on well with synthetics 🙂
@BrushstrokePaintingGuides Natural is superior to synthetic, but for dry brushing, it doesn't matter. My point is don't get talked into buying branded overpriced hobby supplies. There are better and much cheaper options out there.
No, don’t add more water to your paint. Keep your bristles damp and don’t use an absorbent surface to load your brush. It’s likely your paint is having moisture sucked from it by your bristles being too dry.
Because the first section is just explaining what drybrushing is, and I then go on to explain why it’s better to use a texture palette. It’s all in the video 🙂
which is exactly what this video goes on to recommend. The first example was purely to set the scene of "what is drybrushing" The rest of the video then goes on to explain and demonstrate what to do to improve on this out dated method

@@MiniatureMasterClass totally get where you’re coming from.
Appreciate you checking out my channel and taking the time to comment.
@@BrushstrokePaintingGuides Other than my comments, your guide was great. Thank you for posting it.
@@MiniatureMasterClass cheers man
Appreciate it
A very good post. Great figure.👍
When I try drybrushing, my paint dries within a few seconds. Should I dilute it with water??
No, don’t add more water to your paint.
Keep your bristles damp and don’t use an absorbent surface to load your brush.
It’s likely your paint is having moisture sucked from it by your bristles being too dry.
Why did you use a paper towel instead of the dry pallet you have?
Because the first section is just explaining what drybrushing is, and I then go on to explain why it’s better to use a texture palette. It’s all in the video 🙂
4:24 between the man who has thrown a knife 30 times and the man who has thrown a pebble 3,000 times, I fear the man with the pebble more.
Subscribed.
I just bought a airbrush. It's useless now.
Thank you, welcome to my channel.
It’s great to have you aboard 👍
GW's dry brush line is bad.
Dont use a paper towel man get a dry pallet or make yourself a texture pallet
which is exactly what this video goes on to recommend.
The first example was purely to set the scene of "what is drybrushing"
The rest of the video then goes on to explain and demonstrate what to do to improve on this out dated method
My bad man was watching it just first thing i know about drybrushing is to use a texture pallet @@BrushstrokePaintingGuides
You did a good job on the video i was only halfway through the video @@BrushstrokePaintingGuides
