    I have just got back into hobby after 20 years. I was never a good painter, and that's a huge reason why I dropped it, despite loving it so much. Your videos have leveled up my painting in just a couple weeks to a level I genuinely thought I could never achieve. I'm now able to finally get right into hobby while I'm facing some real challenges in life...and this has genuinely helped me more than I can describe. Thank you so so much my brother.

    Absolutely amazing guide, we believe this is your next how to thin your paints, this is an amazing guide, no non-sense, no time wasting, very practical, shows how it is done then you show the theory behind it, why there is problems how to solve them. It is everything anyone could want in a guide and more. We gave it a shout out just after watching it because this is amazing. We know the level of work that goes into these things, and though Brushtroke maybe humble, we will shout him out, he did an amazing level of work to make this guide for you guys. Well done and I hope this video gets the love it deserves!
    Keep those brushes slightly damp, not too damn enough so you can brush it on smoothly even when drybrushing 😉

    These videos are among the best out there! The animated diagrams really help illustrate the point in a clear, no nonsense manner! I know the production of these kind of videos takes more time, but damn! It's not the quantity, but the quality that counts, and your videos deliver this in spades! Keep up the great work man! The mistake I see a lot of people make is to use one or two shades only. This results in the bristles leaving streaks, even on a properly dried brush. If you want expert level dry brush, use several shades. I use up to 5 on figures and miniatures. As each coat gets lighter, and you dry brush a little less. If you do it right, it looks fantastic. If you do it wrong, it looks crappy and rushed. Done properly you will never see a brush stroke, or streak.

    • @BrushstrokePaintingGuides
      @BrushstrokePaintingGuides  3 месяца назад +7

      A very good point. You are spot on, in order to achieve soft blends, then small increments in colour / shade is key.

Well done sire...er sir (Fruedian Slip intended) The format, illustrations, and quite simply your speaking voice are all top notch.
    I like how you touch on dry and dust issues, this has always been my problem. I always assumed "Drybrush" meant . . . DRY BRUSH. I will be using these techniques on my next model. Got a new set of drybrushes, a moisture pad, and ordered a texture palette (Brushstroke edition of course). Say on those texture palettes, for priming I assume you used spray undercoat?

    • @BrushstrokePaintingGuides
      @BrushstrokePaintingGuides  3 месяца назад +4

      OK, there's two answers to that
      The first is, a quick clean can be achieved by simply brushing against your texture board. Just brushing like that actually removes 99% of the paint and is the method Artis Opus promotes.
      For deeper cleaning, which is my preferred method, I use brush soap and the process I use is detailed in this video

    Thanks for showing/explaining to us when AND HOW OFTEN to dampen our brushes. I always assumed the dampening sponges were just for "reactivating" the remaining paint visible on the brush without having to get more from my palette, and it never ended well. I also didn't know I should dampen before getting paint, so I will be trying that out soon with my Minotaur dry brushes.

    As a bit of a sidetrack, you can actually drybrush well with shade paints, however the result comes out more of a tint than a highlight. Excellent way to achieve a gradient, like going from bone to brown on a flat wing etc.

    • @BrushstrokePaintingGuides
      @BrushstrokePaintingGuides  3 месяца назад +1

      Yes, you’re absolutely right. You can technically drybrush with any paint. In order to try and keep things clearer for beginners I was just saying to get the highlight results I was demonstrating, steer clear of washes, inks etc.
      You raise a good point though, using drybrushing to glaze is a cool idea

    10:14 The variation in paint application through the stroke from a flat brush also changes depending on how you sweep the brush over the surface; your example shows sweeping the brush edge-on across the surface, where using it flat-on would increase the variation -- there's less chance for the bristles to contact the surface at the ends of the sweep when swept flat -- but the side-to-side area covered is wider.

    • @BrushstrokePaintingGuides
      @BrushstrokePaintingGuides  3 месяца назад +1

      Yes, absolutely. You’re spot on.
      As I said in the video, the illustration was very simplified but intended to make people consider how the brush contacts the surface will make a difference.
      When choosing between the flat and rounded brushes I did say that they can both achieve the same results but with the flat you need to be more aware of your strokes and contact.
      Because the curved brush is curved in all directions it makes it more fool proof, as it will behave the same no matter how you hold it.
      Thanks for commenting 🙂

    That Eldar Flesh Dry paint you have is crazy. I've got (and use to good effect) Ryza Rust Dry and it is nothing like that, it's more like a thick heavy body acrylic rather than the almost-powder you've got there.

    • @BrushstrokePaintingGuides
      @BrushstrokePaintingGuides  3 месяца назад +2

      Ah now, Ryza Rust is an interesting one. So, when it was first released it was labelled as a Technical paint and has only recently been labelled as a Dry paint. As such, I do forget it's now classed as a dry paint. I will concede that it is the exception to the rule and actually very good for rust effects.
      You wouldn't, however, want to be trying to use it to highlight edges orange.
      So, good effect paint, poor drybrushing paint?

    Great video! The only thing I would suggest is do not use a paper towel and just go straight to the texture palette. Paper towel tends to leave little "hairs" on the brush that WILL end up on the mini, complicating things. Its 100% worth buying or making (which I did) your own textured palette. :)

    • @BrushstrokePaintingGuides
      @BrushstrokePaintingGuides  3 месяца назад +1

      100% this.
      The use of the paper towel is only shown as an introduction to show what “traditionally” drybrushing is.

    I have more of a question for the Citadel Dry paints, can you add water or medium and make them into a "normal" paint.

    • @BrushstrokePaintingGuides
      @BrushstrokePaintingGuides  3 месяца назад +1

      that's a very good question and something I have myself tried when I realised how poor they were. And, no, I've never been able to convert one back to a "normal" paint.
      The chemistry of them just doesnt seem to be the same.
      I've been told AK might make dry paints which actually work as intended. So I'm going to give them a go.
      But I think I'll stick with my view in the video, just buy paints which can be used for many things and give yourself options
      thanks for checking out my channel

      No problem, I actually have two types of paint rack, so I'll give you links for both
      Paint racks - wall: amzn.to/3JKlptj
      Paint racks - tiered: amzn.to/4b2q7P1
      And if you fancy taking a look round my painting setup I even made a video on that too

    I was introduced to tabletop gaming in 1993, but didn't get into it until 1997. Back in the day, drybrushing was used even by the Heavy Metal team! It's really sad that it is such an underappreciated painting technique.
    I mostly use drybrushing on bases and terrain, but at least three of my armies as well as all of my BFG fleets are painted almost entirely with drybrushing.

    At 28:36 you say you used the paint straight from the pot. Does that mean you didn't thin it down at all?

    • @BrushstrokePaintingGuides
      @BrushstrokePaintingGuides  День назад

      Yes, absolutely correct.
      For that blue, I didn’t thin it at all and used it just as it comes from the bottle.
      As with all contrast paints though, make sure to really shake them before use.
      Usually you’ll see on the bottle of the pot where a sediment can build up over time. I make sure to shake until all that is mixed back into the paint and there’s none left on the bottom 👍

    After the dry brush, can you use other form of paints besides just a contrast paint?

    • @BrushstrokePaintingGuides
      @BrushstrokePaintingGuides  3 месяца назад

      Yes, you can paint anything over the top of drybrushing.
      If you mean, can you use other types of paint to achieve the tinting of pre-shading?
      Then the answer is still yes but they need to be transparent enough so that when you put them on you can still see the drybrush shading through them.
      So, you could use inks or washes for example.
      You can use normal acrylics too but they have to be very thinned and applied as glazes.
      Hope that helps

    Ive heard that using a varnish on a drybrushed mini can remove the effect is this myth or true?

    • @BrushstrokePaintingGuides
      @BrushstrokePaintingGuides  2 месяца назад +2

      No, I don’t believe that is true.
      I’ve never had varnish affect my drybrushing.
      You’re applying the same paint whether it’s with normal application or drybrushing, how can using varnish know the difference?
      Now! I guess there could be some truth in this if you’re talking about weathering powders. But that’s not down to them being drybrushed on, that would simply be down to them being a powder.
      It is possible, that if you applied a varnish by brush over weathering powder you could end up brushing off the powder and thereby remove the effect.
      So, if you’re varnishing weathering powders either airbrush or spray can on the varnish.
      Other than that, no drybrushing isn’t removed by applying a varnish.
      I hope that helps

    When I try drybrushing, my paint dries within a few seconds. Should I dilute it with water??

    • @BrushstrokePaintingGuides
      @BrushstrokePaintingGuides  2 месяца назад

      No, don’t add more water to your paint.
      Keep your bristles damp and don’t use an absorbent surface to load your brush.
      It’s likely your paint is having moisture sucked from it by your bristles being too dry.

    Why did you use a paper towel instead of the dry pallet you have?

    • @BrushstrokePaintingGuides

      Because the first section is just explaining what drybrushing is, and I then go on to explain why it’s better to use a texture palette. It’s all in the video 🙂

      which is exactly what this video goes on to recommend.
      The first example was purely to set the scene of "what is drybrushing"
      The rest of the video then goes on to explain and demonstrate what to do to improve on this out dated method
