Thanks for the review Dana! Yours and Brent’s feedback during the Speedpaint project on what a Starter Set should be played a huge role in the makeup of it.
Thank you, glad you enjoyed it!!! I didn't want to assume but I thought our input might have had influence on this set, as this is pretty much exactly what I would want from a starter set, great work on this!!!!
Please know that your reaching out to the community and making changes is one of the big reasons for many of us trying out and then continuing to buy your paints. Y'all have improved so much. I know I really appreciate it and AP makes up a very nice chunk of my paints now because of it.
Thank you for putting your money where your mouths are. :) And thank you for engaging so directly with the community. It makes you stand out in a sea of indifferent companies.
Ummmmm.... Just my 3¢.... As someone who is only looking in from the outside, take that as you will.... BUT... As generally Nothing produced and sold is ever perfect, so a company or brand should always want to continue to improve on what they are making and selling!!! That being said I think a way to be able to do that in the best way is to have people review a product as they choose (good bad etc) and listen to what they say, as opposed to finding people that will just give lip service talking about just how great or awesome something is, to present it in the best light possible even though it might not be a good product!! At the end of the day im saying that Army Painter is clearly making the better choices and listing to what people have to say (good and bad). And going back and working with those points , to make a better product overall!! And it clearly shows that you do care what people say !!... Because a company shows they dont really care and never try to make a better product, the customers will stop coming to buy the products and when they are gone the company is gone!! Army Painter you are doing good work and making smart choices for yourself as a company and for your miniature painting/gaming customers!! Keep on keeping on!!!!
Adding a sponge mat and a parchment paper in this set would make it complete as the clear plastic tub could make up the container. But using a we palette is not a beginner technique, and more experienced painters could easily amend this set DIY style.
14:08 Someone may already have pointed this out, but that plastic clam shell is perfect for making a wet palette out of, just stick some paper towel or an old rag in the *deep side, saturate it with water and some baking paper on top. Then shove it back into the box once you are done painting to keep it out of sunlight.
@@DarkHelm78 I actually double checked this part, just to make sure she didn't make the same point I did, and what she is refering to is using it as a dry palettee, like a plastic palette
They look very good and you might consider buying to try them, but here in Spain it is very easy to find Vallejo's 16-color set for around €35. I think it will always be my recommendation for beginners.
Some stores even have stupid discounts like 3x2 on 18ml bottles of their different ranges, so I think it's hard to replace them as the main option (except for GW heavy enthusiasts who only use Citadel). In any case, after watching this video and Brent's I want to get this set to see what I can do with it!
The stickers are great and i dont know why it isnt done more. Being able to label shelves or use other bottles for premixing, not having to rely on reading slowly fading sharpie is wonderful. Also having that plastic be kinda perfect for making a wet palette is sweet, intentional or not
new ep of the squaaaarespace show dropped! good points, dana, and the reason there's no such thing as doubling up on an idea - execution and use case varies widely between artists. standing by to see you put the not-triads through their paces.
It's fine if you and Brent both made a similar video. I'm pretty sure most people are not following every youtuber and it's nice to have different (or similar) critics about a new product.
I will use a brush-on primer before a spray can. That's what I used to do before getting my airbrush. It is good to see it in this set. I remember "priming" my minis with bleached bone from the Dark Angels paint set in the 90s.
Pairing this set with the Army Painter tool set and wet pallete would be incredible for beginners and veterans. If The Army Painter decide to sell a bundle set like this for the hobby for a nice even $100, I think it would be a huge success. However, I had a similar issue with Goobes video on this set and the paint line in general. I just feel if youre going to sell brush on primer it should come in a larger bottle like their air primers. Its why I have stuck with the Vallejo primers for over a decade because you can buy them in large bottles that are still the largest primer bottles you can get for the hobby on the market for value. I know Pro Acryl and AK have larger primer bottles now, I just hope the Army painter will do the same with their brush on primer.
I still use my original AP Warpaints starter paints for some of my armies. I am definitely looking forward to the new red, though! I've never been overly disappointed by the AP ranges, and will continue to use them.
I started with a small Army Painter set and I thought it was great. I enjoyed the smaller amount of colours so you can try mixing your own tones and get more familiar with the colour wheel. Good vid, as always.
Thanks for this review Dana! I've not been a fan of the previous Army Painter paints, so it's great to hear so much good to be said about the new ones. It was quite a challenge to buy my fiancé his "I want to paint my 3D prints" paint set for his birthday. This would probably nail this pretty well!
I had cheap acrylics for a while when I started to learn airbrushing, good learning curve, by the time I got back into mini's about a year ago i had good primer and thinner , flow improver, matt and gloss medium, when i started painting minis again i brought the primary colour set of Vallejo model air and that did me good for 2-3 40k units
This was a fantastic review of these paints! It was a great primer that I needed to cover a demo of these paints in my FLGS. I'll be using the notes I took from this and Brent's video to share with folks in person tomorrow. Thank you for this!
On the topic of brushing on primer: Stynylrez acrylic primer can be brushed on, levels out super well and shrinks down after applied. I highly recommend it to anyone who is struggling with not being able to spray prime.
Great and informative review, I have just started this hobby and I will definitely pick this set up. Thanks for simplifying things for us beginners. By the way your eyes are mesmerizing.
Great transparency on your past dealings with AP. Definitely interested in the new range as I already use some of the old range despite their shortcomings
Ya, I can see why they went with the ultramarine blue, without any citadel kislev flesh and reikland flesh shade wash; got some wet palletes and a dungeon tile set gift as a test of commitment though, definitely like the look of the citadel water bucket and so I don't drink the paint water, lol, and those bright proacryl paints look like they can be pretty nice with the 12 or 11 man blood bowl team color by color assembly line, while one layer of the knight-questor flesh over the black and grey primer was pretty good on my halfling hefty as they've been keeping me busy for awhile and while to come yet, lol?
Any time any other creator is sponsored by squarespace, i literally say "Squaaaaaaaaaaaaaaaarrrrrrrrrrrrrrrrrrrrrrrrrre Spaaaaaaaaaaaaaaaaaaaaaaaaaaace" out loud. Love it! :D I've never used a brush on primer, which really makes me consider trying this out. It has been less than a year of being back in the hobby, and looking at my mix of all kinds of paints, Army Painter is what I use the most of. I don't see why I wouldn't pick this starter set up, to be frank.
Nice and instructive video (as expected!). I find the one thing that is not beginner-friendly in this small starters is... the limited paint range that necessitates mixing. Mixing paints is not beginner friendly, especially when you need to re-mix more of the stuff to correct mistakes. But I don't know what the solution would be, making it a larger starter box would increase its price...
Dana, I obviously love you and yadda-yadda, but the way you say _Squuarrre Spaaaceeee_ just keeps getting spookier and spookier and my fragile heart can't handle it anymore! I wish I could think of a decent idea for a website to make with Square Space, because I'm afraid if I don't cave in and sign-up, Square Ghosts will come and turn me into a human cube. :p (I'm always happy to see a new Dana Howl video) edit: Seeing a primer that's only slightly lighter in tone than the standard grey plastic of GW miniatures did throw me, I must admit. I'm so used to white spraying assembled figures, I wouldn't feel like my minis were ready to be painted yet with such a light touch. But then again your models look way better than mine, so maybe I need a rethink of my ol' reliable priming methods ;p
I have players that in session 3 randomly and collectively decided to slay the gods. I had to pivot my plot so fast, but it ended up being a great campaign

I'm glad they are getting better but I don't feel the need to try out any of TAP offerings (I'm still bitter about my Speedpaints 1.0 experience). Thanks again for a thorough review done with great visuals.

Curious. I don't know who Jason is. What's the argument against using a wet palette? Very good review. Yeah the saturated colors got to me right from the start too. Not a fan. But they are waaaay better than the old AP paints. I like all the browns from AP. They work very well for painting horses and leather.
I discovered the Army Painter airbrush black primer is a very good brush on primer, and you get a big bottle. White was less effective. I haven't tried mixing for a grey yet.
