This was FANTASTIC 🔥Such an awesome marriage between rock and operatic vocal techniques, and they go together so well in so many ways! This was truly a joy to listen to and analyze -- I hope you all learned a thing or two and gained some extra appreciation for this amazing song. Thanks for watching!
Also at 6:35 I take a short break to drink some tea and just forgot to edit it out lol 😅
Gotta say, I kinda love that mug.
Thought I might see the vipers for the high notes. 😀
Hi Peter. Learn how to belt healthy? You could ask Floor, she tought Henk Poort (Dutch actor and opera/musical singer) how to sing with a healthy grit too (Floor is/was a voice coach). Henk did a nice job covering 'The sound of silence' in the Disturbed version ( ruclips.net/video/q_BJaM-UrXc/видео.html ) and Henk and Floor did 'The phantom' too, be it a bit closer to the original ( ruclips.net/video/plCScjvDOJM/видео.html ). Henk played the phantom for many years in The Netherlands.
This is Tarja Turunen, the original/first lead/femal vocal for Nightwish, Anette Olzon was second and Floor Jansen the third.
But I consider this a Marko track, he completely runs away with it in this, his Phantom is so much more than the classical one - he will be missed though I've still haven't give up the hope that he might come back.
Other good Marko tracks are The Islander Live in Tampere and their High Hopes cover (Pink Floyd), the latter is Marko only on vocals.
All their three female vocals has been Sopranos but they're still very different, Tarja was very classical, Anette was more pop/rock and Floor is somewhere in-between but is a bit of a cameleon and can sing pretty much anything - very useful trait when having a back catalog with songs written for both Tarja (first 5 albums) and Anette (next 2 albums).
I thought you would get a kick out of the fact that Geoff recently gave you a shout out on Voiceplay's live stream for your analysis of Dragon Born.
Original singer... ❤️ Tarja... For me, Floor is my frontsinger. But Tarja will always be the mother of Nightwish
Marco>everyone
Zzzzzz wake up
I think that's a great way to say it for sure.
Marco is the best. End of the fact.
Tarja the best.....i dont like Floor.....nightwish was nightwish.....
Andrew Lloyd Webber has gone on record that this is his favorite version as well.
Yes, I remember him saying it in some interview!
No shit? Oh my
I've heard and read this time and again. Wish someone would give the link to the source, though. Otherwise it's just an urban legend 😜
@@MisterHowzat It's not an Urban legend, but it was a few years ago, when this Nightwish version came out. And The interview was around The same time. So it's hard to find a link to that. You can try to Google it, If you want.
Wow 😮 that’s fucking cool 🤘🤘
Marko is without a doubt the best Phantom. And yes that is Jack Sparrow on the keyboard stand. Tuomas became very influenced by movie scores and composers like Hans Zimmer, who wrote the Pirates score. (Actually they lifted most of that score from his score for Gladiator due to reasons) Hence why he wrote the Ghost Love Score 🙂
Andrew Lloyd Webber said that Hank Poort was the best Phantom. I trust his judgement.
@@DarkMatterBurrito so true!!! Marco is amazing but Henk is on another level.
@@DarkMatterBurrito I certainly DON'T trust ALW's judgement in anything!
@@TheRealRedAce yeah I mean he only created it. His opinion is worthless obviously. /S
@@DarkMatterBurrito It is. Most of his music is not good and politicly he's absolutely appalling.
I've seen dozens of reactions to this song. Funny how they all start serious and analytical and end up banging their heads with a huge smile on their faces, and can say nothing but "...amazing!"
Tarja was the original, I was at that particular concert, so lovely.
That must have been amazing. As I watched this reaction, I was thinking to myself that I'll never have a chance to see this performed live ever, so those that saw it were witnesses to an amazing performance. I definitely envy your experience.
@Sakari Joenvää nice!kiitos beautiful Finlandia!🇫🇮🇦🇷
So lucky to have been there! Wow.
You have no idea how lucky you are❤
Let's give the guitar player some love! Emppu just KILLED it!!!
I love how happy Emppu always looks. You can tell he loves playing.
He is an amazing guitarist
Just for your statistical record, I'm a 73 year-old guy from northern most Michigan, currently watching around 14 to 16 inches of new snow come down. I just discovered Nightwish a couple months ago, I'm a singer guitar player ballad crooner, who done a ton of 60',70's and 80' music. I LOVE this band. What damned fun!
Copper Harbor? I'm a northern troll.
Tarja will always be the "true" Nightwish singer for me.
Maybe it's just because she was the first (or because she was the first I heard) - but to me it was impossible to replace her, even by talented singers like Anette and Floor Jansen.
Agree 100%. To me, what made Nightwish stand out from the rest was that combination of the symphonic metal and the sound of her voice. Absolutely fantastic. After that, all the others sound too average. Having said that, I totally respect Annette and Floor, they are both very good singers, just nothing special to me.
Same
Same 🥰🤘🏽🤘🏽
Same!
I'm glad someone sees it the way I do😊
I actually *love* the unusual vowel and consonant sounds from Marko in this performance! I think it gives the character of the Phantom a creepier vibe than he would otherwise have. It almost sounds like the words don't want to come out of the character's mouth and have to be forced out through sheer willpower. That's honestly a terrible description of the vibe I get from it, but it's the best I can come up with.
just a small correction, phantom was written by an English composer, Andrew Lloyd Webber, and the original singers were also English, Michael Crawford and Sarah Brightman, so it isn't. as you stated an American song.
Absolutely spot on why do Americans assume everything is American? lol.😁
Actually, the first singer was Steve Harley of Cockney Rebel fame. His was the voice on the single release.
@@TheRealRedAce you are correct, i didnt realise that the single was released just before the stage show, still an
english singer though (p.s. I loved the Psychomodo album)
@@stumason7963 I loved all the CR albums. I'm happy I got to see them live back in the day. :)
and there is no language called american 😆
Jack sparrow copied Tuomas's look since he's looked this way from the late 90's lol. He definitely pulls the look off. He's the composer and lyricist of all music for Nightwish except a couple songs by Marco
There are a small handful of their songs where Emppu is also credited as a songwriter, Slaying the Dreamer being one of them iirc
@@bloodknyte interesting fact i didn't know. That's a badass song too. Did he write the lyrics & compose as well?
Here is Tuomas dressing up as Jack Sparrow in a side by side picture ruclips.net/video/IQxQd0x1Jm4/видео.html @1:33 It's really is hard to tell them apart.
@@dalia1598 you need to chill out and learn what sarcasm is. Regardless calling someone a liar is quite uncalled for child. Sarcasm and if this were a serious subject i could call myself misinformed on the subject. LIAR i AM NOT. get a life.
Anette did not have operatic training, she was a second, Floor is current and third.
They each have "song" meant for only them. Tarja, Ghost Love Score. Anette, scaretale and Floor has I want to say Elan. But that's just my opinion.
Tarja was the original singer and co-founder
I am liking this band! I never thought that Hard Rock and Opera were the extreme in music. Makes sense though, that is why I like both! Lots of fun once again!
Good opera is really good.
Good rock opera is really good.
I love your voice - both speaking and singing - and have been enjoying your reaction and analysis videos. In this video you made one small error - you claimed that Phantom was originally done by American theatre, however, it was written by Andrew Lloyd Webber and first performed in London, long before it was picked up and began performing on Broadway and finally surpassed the record for longest running show, outlasting Cats - another Andrew Lloyd Webber creation. Keep up what you do!
Thank you for continuing to react to Nightwish, new subscriber here for that.
Greetings, from Romania!
Marko is the best! I am really sad that he left Nightwish.
I’ve gotten to meet Marko and he’s so nice
Tarja is the original singer of Nightwish. Of the band's 9 albums, the first 5 were recorded with her, the next 2 with Anette, and the last 2 with Floor. A curiosity of this show that you just saw is that Tarja was sick that day. She had a throat infection and was on medication. I'm curious to know what your vocal classification. Are you bass or baritone? Your voice has a beautiful timbre.
This was song #5 of an 18 song set. 3 songs later is their cover/tribute of Pink Floyd's High Hopes with Marko on lead vocals. (Tarja was offstage for a wardrobe change)
Tarja was the original singer and this was her last show. After the concert, the guys gave her the open letter dismissing her from the band.
Anette was the 2nd singer (pop/rock style, operatics were left to a choir in her tenure) , Floor is 3rd and current. And Today is Floor's birthday
Yes this Please. High Hopes
THANKS for some TARJAWISH !!!!!
TARJA = 💘💘🧡🧡💛💛💚💚💙💙💜💜
Aw, Tarja! Nightwish!! A lovely reaction, as usual. It is amazing to see how quick you bounded with her voice. Feel like doing a collab? Thank you.
Tarja!! What good memories. Thanks for this great reaction. I love Nightwish.
Now you've done the big reaction standards, Nightwish (Floor/Tarja), Dimash, and Diana Ankudinova.
I would suggest checking out Lara Fabian who happens to be a great inspiration for both Dimash and Diana for her emotional connection while singing.
Lara Fabian - Je suis malade (From Lara With Love version) is highly suggested
I'd say it qualifies as raw, powerful and intense in its emotion if that helps 😁
Such a unique and exciting version of this song. Enjoyed your analysis as always.
It's so great to watch a concert where no one is holding a phone to video it but only enjoying this amazing performance ❤
It is definitely a jack sparrow on the front of Tuomas's keyboard, and if I may i say, they do have some similarity's in their looks to. :-P Tarja was the O.G. Symphonic Metal Queen who brought symphonic metal to the masses, or at least it became more socially acceptable to listen to, i remember we had songs like "Nemo" and " I wish i had an angel" playing on mainstream radio here in Norway when they launched, quite a few female vocalists have been inspired by her career, including a certain Floor.. :-)
Glad you watched/heard this Nightwish song. Your reaction to Marko is priceless. Frankly I reacted like that too when I first watched it. Both Maggie Renee and The Charismatic Voice also reacted to this and they had the same reaction. Really appreciate how you explain the nuances.
Ha ha... I remember my first time listening to this too. I almost broke a rib with my own jaw 😂
I hope you're planning on delving more and more into Nightwish... just wait till you get to The Greatest Show on Earth (Wembley or Tampere) and The Poet and the Pendulum (Live at Wembley/Official Live)
I really love how you’re able to explain the vocals so that even a normal person understands. Really interesting!
Great reaction dude! Keep going with the NW..... Really enjoyable and different to the usual reactions!
Best wishes from Namibia
When you had first done Nightwish I had mentioned I had never heard them but then when I went to watch more of them I heard this song and was like OMG I had actually heard Nightwish before. I hadn't recognized the name and I guess the new singer. I absolutely love this and had forgotten I'd heard it before, it is a fantastic rendition. After seeing it again, I'd hoped you would do this one as well so thank you. And thank you for bringing me back to this group I'd forgotten about.
Thank you for also bringing attention that it's not actually an Opera, like you said, a lot of people don't realize it's not. She is very amazing with Operatic techniques that's for sure!!! On that note I cannot wait to dive further into the opera world based on your suggestions.
I'm definitely going to have to start contributing to your Patreon soon bc I really do learn a lot of techniques that I never had known before. And appreciate the specifics.
Marco (?) definitely has the rock thing down pat for sure on this! He reminds me a lot of Meatloaf with his dramatic singing.
I was so impressed by this and after they come together and it hits the next level- why this became a favorite a long time ago. I've added it to my Spotify list so I don't forget it again! Lol.
That ending is just INSANE!!! So damn amazing. This is literally my favorite version of this song!
i like it when someone who's an expert or knows what they're talking about actually teaches not just throws jargon and expects us to be coloured impressed. Have the sub can't wait for more.
Oh my gosh I am so glad you did an analysis on this one. The first time I heard it I was blown away by the entire production of Night Wish doing Phantom of The Opera! Thankful for your unique and professional insight.!
Thank you for enjoying this. Best ever concert for me all time. Great memories.
If you love rock singing, you need to check out the Northern Kings. It's Marco Hietala, Jarkko Ahola, Tony Kakko, and JP Leppäluoto. They do metal covers together and they're glorious.
Another thing to check out for metal and opera together is Dark Sarah's Dance with the Dragon. Heidi Parviainen and JP Leppäluoto are the singers. Symphonic metal tango.
Not to forget the group “Tarot”. There is rock…. And Marco’s voice….. Puh….. Love from Sweden 🇸🇪
👏👏👏 great job putting the effort in to pronouncing ‘Tarja’ correctly! You just made all Finns 🇫🇮💙🫵 Your understanding parallels “my lady” Charismatic….& Nightwish is the GOAT IMHO 💙🇫🇮
Thinking the same thing!!!❤❤
Peter, You are getting quite the rep around the music reactor community. I am starting to hear Peter Barber said on several reactions.
I can listen to this man talks all day .... aaaahhhh so refreshing ^_^
Fantastic analysis, Marko can really get up there he has a wonderful and expressive voice. -
Imagine watching Phantom on Broadway, but with Nightwish in the Orchestra Pit? Would be insane 😍
Love the end of an era live show I cried when I got my copy loved it so much and was so sad that it was the end of an era with the band and that I was unable to make it to any of the gigs on the tour, while I appreciate the singers who came after I have such an emotional attachment to the first era of nightwish
I wish you had been around for the last two or three years. Most of the coaches who have reviewed this don’t seem to understand what Tarja is doing, probably because most of them are contemporary-based. But even the opera based people don’t want to go into it, because they don’t want to alienate the people who don’t seem to like TARJA.
I'm here now and always happy to nerd out about vocal technique 🤓
Tarja will always be the mother of nightwish. There are songs I love her way and others I’ve loved floors way. It’s like comparing apples and oranges and I hate when people do. They are both top notch just diff. Floors not trying to be tarja and tarja is an opera singer. Diff but great.
Would love to see you react to the band Poets of the Fall and their song Carnival of Rust (their most well known song and the music video got voted as the best Finnish music video ever back in 2006 when the song was released). Truly an underrated band from here in Finland. Also a band with many different sounds all the way from slow melodic songs to full on rock.
Although if you want to immediately hear a song that showcases how crazy good the lead singer Marko Saaresto's voice can be (and while his vocal range might not be the most dynamic out there he is an amazing example of what you can achieve by having absolutely perfect control of your vocals especially the raw emotion that his voice is able to convey) then i recommend listening to their song Daze. His vocals on the chorus are something out of this world.
I just think that so many more people would love their music if they just ever heard them but since their from Finland it rarely happens. Although many have heard their songs in Remedy's video games Max Payne 2, Alan Wake, Quantum Brake and Control
(Also every single reactor i have seen reacting to them has been pretty much blown away by their music so i'm very confident you'll like it)
also... also... lot's of deep and meaningful lyrics and wordplay in their songs
sorry for the long rant i just really want more people to know about them :D
Tarja was the first singer. Anette is 2nd and Floor 3rd. FYI Nightwish is Floor's 3rd band. You should check out Tarja's solo stuff and some of her classical songs. Tarja has studied classical music most of her life. You should react to Floor and Henk singing Phantom. Nicole Scherzinger singing a song from the Phantom. Marko has a video of singing a duet All I Ask of You . You should react to Tarja singing Supremacy from Muse.
Tarja, Tuomas and Emppu formed Nightwish 1996 in highschool, they made 5 albums before Tarja departure from the band! ❤️ You should check out Tarjas solo opera album's/song's.
Agree! Tarja solo career is amazing and sooo underrated
She did great on this song!💯
Great band 🤘
Outstanding performance ❤️
Fantastic reaction 👍👍👍
You need to react to their Pink Floyd cover "High Hopes", really, Marco's voice will blow you away.....haunting long notes....
i did read somewhere that tarja is classically trained but was a chamber music singer rather than opera ...
Also funny that Marko won the finnish Masked Singer with Songs like Kiss from Prince, Gangsta's Paradise or Everybody from the Backstreet Boys...
I was delighted when I found out you were doing a R & A of this song! I went searching for more Nightwish music on my streaming service after your first R & A on them, found this one and had to add it. I didn't realize how alike how hard rock and opera are until you talked about it. It makes perfect sense! Thank you!
I absolutely love that you appreciate Finnish singing education. Quality.
Tuomas he was rocking it for long time he is the mastermind and everyone's favorite member he is the guy who created Nightwish writes and composes 80% of the songs.
Not my favourite!!
Yes, It's Jack Sparov on Tuomas' keyboard.
Nightwish has made a video like Pirates of the Caribbean that you have to watch. It's called "The Siren" and is about mermaids who lure sailors to their deaths:
ruclips.net/video/wZnVQT_iEYo/видео.html
Saw Nightwish live (their last tour before they fired Tarja- the same from which this video was taken) in England and they were freaking amazing! Thanks for your input, keep the great work 👍
Great analysis, thank you! I knew about the difference between operatic and musical theatre styles, but hadn't thought about the similarities between opera and rock before, but it made sense - I knew about Rob Halford's admiration for Pavarotti (and, if some articles are to be believed, vice versa) but just hadn't made the connection.
If you want to try Annette, don't go for the same type of song - her strengths are different. If you prefer live performances, I'd recommend Slow Love Slow from Montreux Jazz Festival 2012 or Scaretale Official Live. She also shines on any of the Imaginaerum studio tracks (less so Dark Passion Play in my opinion, where Tuomas was learning to write for a voice other than Tarja's and hadn't quite got there yet).
One quibble - The Phantom of the Opera is English rather than American. But I know what you mean about the vowels, anyway!
All hale the REAL TRUE Queen of Nightwish!!!!!!!!, the very beautiful looking and very unique voice of the enchanting TARJA!!!!!!!😀👍👍👍👍👍👍👍
awesome reaction.... pretty much the same as I felt after listening. Best cover of this, they made it their own.
I would recommend checking out Nightwish cover of High Hopes from this same concert to hear more singing by Marko.
Hey Peter, awesome reaction!! You just HAVE to listen to Marko sing the Pink Floyd cover "High Hopes." It's from the same concert (End of an Era). His voice also truly shines in that too. Liked and subscribed.
I'm an instrumentalist mainly, guitar, piano and other stringed instruments but am continually fascinated by the mechanics of vocal expression of all styles, and love your analysis of it. Thanks so much for sharing your knowledge and perspective!
I grew up listening to nightwish and Tarja was their first vocalist. So I have always been team Tarja, but Floor does a good job
Amazing reaction! I had to come back and check out your Nightwish reactions. Love Nightwish. This is absolutely my favorite version of Phantom of the Opera, and your comments were fantastic.
Love to see you react to either Storytime or Romanticide by Nightwish live at Wacken 2013 😁 will knock your socks off.
Watching people on the internet fall in love with Marko is one of my favourite pastimes. 😛
Lovely reaction and analysis Peter! Thank you 🌷
Marko is the most Metal dude there is. I mean, eyes and ears all confirm it.
Tarja was their first singer and sang in a mostly operatic style. Annette was their second singer and was more of a pop singer with no classical training. When Nightwish fired Tarja they wanted a complete break with their previous style and so went with in a completely different direction. Yes it is a Jack Sparrow doll. Tuomas, the keyboardist and main composer of Nightwish, looks a lot like him and I think someone sent it to him, he loved it and placed it on the keyboard stand. You also should checkout Floor and Henk Poort's version of teh Phantom from Beste Zangers . They use the Nightwish arrangement and Floor absolutely kills it. Henk was the original Phantom in the Dutch production of the musical. For Floor singing some more operatic style vocals, Stargazers live from Buenos Aries and one of their masterpieces, Poet and the Pendulum. The last one is long and deeply emotional for Nightwish fans so recommend a little research into it's background if you do it. Last there is an older video of Floor singing O Mio Babbino Caro on a Dutch TV Show that is quite lovely. ruclips.net/video/UeTyAZtV5wI/видео.html
Oh yeah you should check out hair metal Marko from the early days of his own band Tarot.
There is a TV performance of their song Wings Of Darkness from back in 1986 I think 😁
When doing a critical review of Tarja's voice, it's always helpful to remember:
a) she is Finnish, which informs many of the vowel choices and positions
and
b) her opera training was in the German tradition, which (so I have heard) offers a somewhat different twist on phonation, etc
.... sorry about the 'etc'... I am just parroting something I heard over on TCV.
I am decidedly NOT a Voical Nerd.
"Voical" 😅 Is that a cross between "voice" and "vocal"?!? What kind of nerd does that make you 😉 Good points you've made, though.
@@MisterHowzat ? A nerd who cannot spell properly ?
What a voice You have!!! GREAT REACTION!
Yes Peter it is a doll of Jack Sparrow from Pirates of the Caribbean. I went back and watched the full original video. You have a good eye.
On a similar vein, symphonic metal band 'Dark Sarah' have a Bass Singer, JP Leppaluoto, singing operatic duets with female lead singer, Heidi Parviainen, in a similar style to this. Check out 'Dance with the Dragon' as a good example of their style.
Watched many of your videos and I wanna hear you sing...feel like your voice is absolutely beautiful
Tarja is the One and only greetings from Finland 🇫🇮😷❤
If you enjoyed Marlo’s voice check out “While Your Lips are Still Red” from Wembly 2015 or The Islander” from Tampere 2015
It's just chaos at the end & I love it every time. Marko is rock honestly. He's been doing it almost longer than I've been alive. His band Tarot kinda paved the way for the bands not in England or America to get in on that sweet 80s hair metal. What's their song.... wings of destruction iirc - it's history
Lol imagine trying to do the chandelier at a gig? Could be dangerous!
IMHO Amaranth showcases Annette best. It's a great song
Stupendous comments. Congratulations.
I am sure you can enjoy, and add to our appreciation, “High Hopes”. The Nightwish version of the original Pink Floyd Classic.
Fun to watch and very educational. Many thanks for the detail. The vocal pairing you need to hear is Floor and Marco. It'll blow you away.
I wish to watch you doing more reactions from them, your insights are always so interesting, plus I just enjoy listening to your voice lol
Superior review. Just excellent.
I love your voice and how explain your way of speaking is very particular kisses from Argentina Buenos Aires 🇦🇷🤘 Aguante Nightwish!!!
There's a band called Dark Sarah that is very theatrical. And all of the songs are written to tell one long, dark fairy tale of Heidi Parviainen's creation. (She's the singer, who plays the title role of Dark Sarah). If you like musical theatre stuff, definitely check them out. I recommend "Dance With The Dragon" to start.
Great suggestion! One of the most enchanting gems of Finnish Heavy music, spiced with the theme "Beauty and the Beast". It is worth it!
@@jaana3634 It's fantastic, isn't it? I was lucky enough to go to Finland for the album release of "The Golden Moth". They were great, and such sweet people!
Big thank u!!!
Wow, just you talking voice sounds amazing Mr. Barber. ❤️❤️❤️
Found your channel today and liked the reactions because like some other opera singers you also explain a lot what makes it more interesting to me that just listening to it like "yea, nice...great...cool"..
Did you already see "The greatest show on earth" by Nightwish? As an opera singer who also tells some kind of story you could like it.
I realy love your channel - it's so much fun to watch you and listen to your explanations. I#m not a singer at all but, even though I understand what you are talking about.
I agree. Best Phantom ever. Glad someone else sees what I see. Metal and classical are the same bird.
Great reaction!! 👌😊 Love your voice ❤️ Saludos desde México 🇲🇽
Jack Sparrow would be composer and soul of Nightwish, Tuomas Holopainen, lol.
Imagien a duett with you and "The big brain singer" here on RUclips. Another operadude, a tenor.
Your reaction and analysis is awesome! Yay!
Great reaction and analysis !! Keep up the good work.
Waiting for that Rock/Belting Peter😁
There is also a live version (in the Dutch show Beste Zangers) where Floor sings Phantom of the Opera with Henk Port who actually was Andrew Loyd Webber's favourite "phantom" when he played the role. It is a really fun performance.
This was Tarja's last show with the band. She was fired right after it.
Love me some Nightwish ♥
first off i knew Marco would surprise you second i love that hand off Tuomas does during the whole consort Tarja also had the flue or some other upper respiratory illness so the fact that she can sing so well even when she is sick is amazing this was truly the End of an Era this is Tarja's last time on stage with Nightwish she was fired in an open letter there is alot of events leading up t her leaving and the dramatic responce after but they have Floor now which seems to have healed some wounds
Great reaction❤ Ilove how usually reactors come to listen to Tarja or Floor and end up fangirling over Marco 😂🤗
The best might be Tarja... or it might be Floor... but in the end, it'll always be Marko!
