At the end of the song you can see Tarja walking off stage. This is because she does a costume change for the next song in the set (The Siren) which is another absolute must-watch performance, not just by these two phenomenal singers, but by the entire band.

I love it when the music professionals are waxing lyrical about how great Marko is BEFORE he even hits them with the first "Sing, My Angel of Music". 🤣 Incredible vocalist. He and Tarja together were amazing here. The whole band was. Tarja really pulled it out of the hat that night - she had the flu and had been feeling pretty ill earlier in the day.

Greetings. OK I'll introduce the band they are all Finnish BTW here. Though later members Anette is Swedish and Floor Dutch. Tarja Turunen (Taa-rr-ee-a Two ru-nen) lead vocals and founder 97-05, Tuomas Holopainen keyboards, composer, original male vocalist( on a few tracks),l founder to present, Jukka Nevalainen drums 1997-2014/manager 14-present, Emppu Vuorinen guitar founder 97-present, Marko Hietala male vocals/bass 2001 -2021.
That is who is on stage and the line up from 2001 and 1st heard on Century Child 2002 though to this concert. Tilted Once upon a tour. Once was album #5 in 2004. Only after everything went public about her leaving which she only found out the next morning via a sealed letter that was given with instructions not to open until the morning. This was their triumphant home coming from a world tour. That letter was published at 2am on the bands website. That is what started the troubles that are now settled BTW between the former members but not some commentators. The DVD was called End of an Era when released and now so is the show itself. Obvious reasons.
The first to reconcile were Tarja and Marko ( who both have classical training which I am sure you guessed and I can confirm. This is the answer to what happens when good friends and trained singers are let loose to show their skills as part of a metal band doing a live version of a rock musical. Magic!! That is what happens. Going by @The Charismatic Voice Marko was hitting GS and Tarja D's perhaps D5 iirc correctly and boy do they blow the roof of the then named Hartnell arena ( without a sponsor due to geopolitical issues) on October 21, 2005. 11 500 on hand to see it live.
And all credit to Nightwish as a whole. I don't want to short change Jukka, and Emppu.
But in 2012 at a Christmas concert being telivised in Finland both Tarja and Marko were guests. Reports from back stage were of many tears and hugs. Much hugging on stage as they sang Her version of Ave Maria. They were singing side by side holding onto each other. Very beautiful moment. A while later in Germany I think at a festival she brought Marko on as a guest to sing with her and her band during her solo career that starts in 2007 and has plans going through 2024. On a personal level its great. On a music level its fantastic. Such great talent only gets more amazing when they have eachother to play off of. The duality of male and female, beauty and the beast. Mystical/Angelic and human is a theme throughout their time together in nightwish. See The Siren and Sleeling Sun both from this show for an example of it.
Now bonus fact it is not a coincidence that Tarja's mic & stand match her outfits. She stil does that to this day. Last night in Manchester, Glasgow the night before and London is next on her tour. She put out her Best of: Living the Dream in December 2022 and another in her Outlanders album We own this sky, about the history of Antigua where the visuslizers were filmed. The woman stays busy that is for certain. Wile staying humble. She calls her fans My Winter Storm. If there is one thing Finland knows is winter storms. So on behalf of all fans Kittos! ( thank you) for your reaction. There is no lack of material to explore. But don't let that stop you.
And for the record. Tarja and Nightwish 96-2005.
    Anette Olzen 2007- 2012.
    Floor Jansen 2012-present

oh this was definitely live and yes, they're just that good! 😅
great reaction! Tuomas is such a gifted composer and even when they cover songs he always puts a spin on them (See: Walking in the Air - From Wishes to Eternity DVD).
And Marko and Tarja's vocals are so powerful on their own but just out of this world when combined. I love Tarja's voice, she has such a dark and warm colour to it that's either really gentle and soothing or just power. But very different than Floor, because I feel like Floor's voice is the strongest when she belts and Tarja's when she goes full round classical - Floor brings the Metal to the band and Tarja the Symphonic. 🙏🏽 But both can do more than that, they're very colourful and experimental singers. :)
I love pretty much every song from the first era but two of my favourites are *Beauty of the Beast live in Amsterdam 2002* (to me the prequel to Ghost Love Score) and *10th Man Down live at Summer Breeze festival* (go for the 2023 remastered version by Nightwish Arena) or *Swanheart - From Wishes to Eternity* if you feel like doing a ballad :)

If you want to hear more Tarja's vocal abilities, I recommend something from her solo career, for example song "Victim of Ritual" live from Woodstock 2016, great performance. :)
I have one great recommendation for analysis for music teacher, please react to 女王蜂 - 火炎 (Queen Bee - Fire) performance from The First Take RUclips channel. The First Take is channel where musicians have only one take to perform song and it's publishing on RUclips. Queen Bee is japanese punk/rock/pop/disco band and their vocalist Avu-chan is transgender/non-binary person, she can sing with male and female voice. In this specific song she using some insanely high notes, it's just incredible, but she don't use much her female voice, more in warming up before performance, but I think it's great performance for music teacher to analyze. :) And this song was using as first opening song in anime "Dororo" from 2019, but in The First Take is acoustic version, just acoustic guitar and insane vocal. Please, react to it. :) But I must say that original version of this song, I mean from album, is also insane and have music video, so I recommend also original version. ;)
And from symphonic metal I can recommend two japanese bands, one is more like symphonic speed/power metal with male vocal, band 摩天楼オペラ (Matenrou Opera), I recommend song "真っ白な闇がすべてを塗り替えても" (Masshiro na Yami ga Subete wo Nurikaete mo) official music video, amazing song, and second is symphonic metal with female singer, she has operatic music education, band Liv Moon, song "Never..." from their newest album is really good and have music video. :)

No worries, you don't need to compare the vocalists. They are all exceptional, the whole band is.
They are definitely singing live. And think about it, Tarja did this in a full concert and she was sick. This was early in the concert, I think it was the 5th song.
I hope you do more from her era. Slaying the Dreamer is a good one. The live version from this same concert, End of an Era. There Tarja uses different kind of voice. Marko (the basist and the and the singer on this one) sings in that one too, or screams...

beautiful reaction! Tarja and Marko were the best duo for me because their voices are different but they complement each other very well. that little "battle of voices" at the end is impressive. Hopefully you can react to more songs from that NW era with Tarja: slaying the dreamer, the siren, stargazers, ghost love score, planet hell etc etc. and hopefully you can react to something from Tarja's solo career since she has grown a lot all these years, I recommend an aria "mein herr Marquis"; one from the circus life live show (it's totally live, no pre-recorded vocals or instruments) that came out recently "shadow play" (she plays the piano); "victim of ritual" at Woodstock; "ciaran's well" (metal symphonic); "world in my eyes" a cover of Depeche Mode. Tarja has a very versatile career with many styles and her voice has been improving over time.

Both Tarja, and female vocalist after her, Anette, found the world tours quite taxing for their vocals. They played about every second night a few weeks in a row, and then went to another continent. Anette's tours were even harder than Tarja's and she had lots of problems with her health and vocals. Tarja has quite an extensive education in singing and she takes care of her vocals, fit and health, exercises a lot, which helped her, but still the biggest problem (publically at least) was the desire of the boys to have more gigs and longer tours, and Tarja's wish to have less gigs and cut tours shorter, which lead into a conflict the band couldn't work out. I don't like much this End of an Era concert if I listen Tarja, because in this concert her vocals don't sound as rich and easy as they usually are. There's lots of great quality other concerts of her Nightwish era (always check the "remastered" versions made by fans), but unfortunately most reactions are into this (biggest Nightwish) concert. Also, in this concert her songs are sung more in contemporary vocals than the bel canto style which she used mostly before. And then like you can read from other comments, she had a flu: the day of this concert she was afraid she couldn't sing at all and after the concert she wrote she just barely made it through (of what she was happy about).

    • @headhunter8106
      @headhunter8106 Год назад

If I recall correctly, Tarja was battling an illness during the tour and during this last performance. Also, I believe it was her desire to keep her classical performance/obligations was a key factor in the band wanting to part ways ("choose us or them") and I'm betting that touring with Nightwish as well as her operatic schedule is more accurately what caused fatigue. As for Annette, she could barely sing to begin with, so it's not a stretch to think the rigors would take their toll.

Tarja was such a pioneer in this field of combining metal and classical singing, she and her teachers had to invent new singing techniques and tricks to allow her to sing safely live with a metal hand blasting in her ears. This is because she couldn't hear and feel her instrument perfectly due to the band, she could have easily damage her voice by accident.
Unfortunately, these tricks while normally passable live pre-youtube, are nowhere near her normal top form.
The live shows where she goes all out are the very early ones and then they get rather rare, this is one of them (but she did have the flu-like condition), Wishes to Eternity is another and there was one another full show, but can't remember it off the top of my head. Also, many of the early Nightwish videos on youtube have wrong framerate, so they are playing ever so slightly in slow motion

If it helps you to know, none other than Andrew Lloyd Weber stated that this was his favorite cover of Phantom of the Opera because Marko makes the Phantom sound sinister instead of a troubled soul in the musical. I mean, people tend to forget that he is responsible for someone getting killed in the theater.
Because of this performance, we get Henk Poort (who ALW said was his favorite Phantom; I believe the words are that Henk is THE PHANTOM) performing this with the arrangement of the song that appears on Nightwish's 2003 album Century Child on Dutch TV's Beste Zangers.

That was because he was having a migraine headache during the performance. 2 Andrew Lloyd Webber the original composer of the broadway play loved and spoke highly of Nightwish’s performance of Phantom.

This is live and at the end of the concert. One piece of context too, is that Nightwish came together when the keyboardist, Tuomas, was attending a musical college in Finland. Their educational system is a little different so IDK if there is a direct comparison. He is a classically trained musician who got his start with the clarinet. Tarja was one of his old classmates who he called to join his band years later.

Avoid the performance she did with Aria's Valeri Kipelov, because the latter has turned into a Putinist. As beautiful as it looked back then in the pre-Marin era of Finland when it was all co-op and unicorns.

She's a fine singer, but the best singer Nightwish has ever had is Marco Hietala. If you want to hear more of his singing, he has a band of his own called Tarot. Pyre of Gods is a good song to listen to from them.

You were wondering about the bassist.. As already mentioned, that is one Mr. Marko Hietala. He left Nightwish shortly after COVID hit, as he needed a break and was completely fed up from how the music industry is. He has no hard feelings or any type of animosity or anything towards the band; but he definitely needed a break because his head wasn't in the right place for music.
But about his voice, as you were saying that he's up in the stratosphere.. consider this: Marko had a botched throat surgery a few years before this, that caused him to lose his entire falsetto range, so everything you are hearing is from his chest voice. He had to completely relearn how to sing and get that range back... rumor had it that at one point he had hired a vocal coach to help him with singing again... some unknown vocal coach named Floor Jansen.
If you really want to hear him excel, react to the Nightwish song "The Islander", live from Tampere. That will give you a good idea of what he can do and how you can compare his voice there to what you are hearing with Phantom of the Opera.

Henk was the Phantom in the Dutch production and was apparently a favourite of Andrew Lloyd Webber. When Floor asked if he'd duet it with her (she's been a massive fan of Henk since she was young) on the TV show Beste Zangers a while ago, he said he'd do it if he could also do it on stage with Nightwish. The band agreed, and they've just released the video of it in the last couple of days.
