Having granted asylum is not the same as getting citizenship which they would need to compete for a different country.
These are athletes who have fled their home country and are seeking asylum. When they grant asylum, maybe they can complete with another country.
Why don’t they want to walk under the flags of the countries that gave them refuge and nice to them?
This is the safest way to avoid politics as much as possible.
In many countries being a refugee doesn't grant you citizenship, it may grant you the rights of a citizen of that country but not permanently, thus he/she is not 100% a citizen of that country but a refugee on that country
Because they're refugees, not citizens. It shows you the limbo that many refugees find themselves in.
This is so wrong, why aren't they represented by their host countries? It just sends a message that they are meant to stay as refugees.
For them to be represented by the host country, they would have to be a national of the country for which they are competing according to the requirements of the Olympic Charter.
Another complicated thing: if you want them to be represented by the host country, would the achievements of the refugee olympians be credited to the host country? If so, wouldn't that be unfair since these host countries are not incentivized (and likely wouldn't be as willing) to pay for the training and treatment of these athletes?
The message for me though is that, in a worldwide competition where the nations are teams, there is still a space for the "nationless" to be there. Maybe not for their country of origin, but for themselves.
