Rhythm Roulette: Jonwayne

- For this installment of Rhythm Roulette, Mass Appeal presents Jonwayne, the man who tears down shows in Teva sandals. We took Jonwayne to Poobah Records in Pasadena, CA to pick out three records while blindfolded. The fun begins once we start to witness what he came up with. Out of the three records, he ended up going drawing joints from The Ritchie Family's Give Me A Break, as well as The Stylistics' Sun & Soul record he considered using to be "cheating," because it's a given that there is good shit on there. Nonetheless, your boy crafted two joints back-to-back for your listening pleasure.

What started as a humble graffiti ‘zine in 1996 would soon grow to be one of the most trusted outlets for youth-spawned urban culture. Today, Mass Appeal is a media collective led by authentic voices and inspired minds. We are a platform for radical creatives who are transforming culture.
For those that don't know, he has a youtube channel now called 'John Makes Beats' and streams on twitch as well.
I envy this man's talent. He doesn't even use a DAW 💀
Bro goated ff
thank you for showing me that GEM of a channel
@@permanentfacelessness no problem brother!
I told forgot I seen him on here long time ago. Just last year finally this channel and I love it.
massappeal needs to come out with a beat tape from all these roulette videos
+jerick carino exactly
It would be near impossible to clear copyrights on everything used in the beats
BUT you that matter? I mean they did release these sounds with out any effect from youtube copy right. I would agree with you if they were selling the tape tho
does*
+PartTimeDowny the could put it out for free. As long as they're not making money off of it it can be released.
You can criticize him for only using is laptop all you want, but the end result speaks for himself. That beat at the end was damn near ready for the masses. That level of comfort doesn't come easily, I've been working on the same beat tape for a year now, and it still hasn't come out the way I want it yet. Salute to Jonwayne
bruv just finish that shit... trust me.. your tape is probably hell hot you just feel it isnt perfect.
The real crime is using the damn track pad.
You just spoke the realist shit ever in that last sentence. 💯
@Hero for Hire amen to that
You ever release it? Where can I find it? I make beats as well, love to hear others trying to master the craft and strive for excellence
how can people say sampling is NOT an art form
can't spell fart without art
david esktorp so why are you watching rythm roulette WHEN YOU KNOW ITS ABOUT SAMPLING?
blackmale78 he was fucking with you
this is 2018, not 1970.. Wake up or shut up.
@@desktorp 👍™
"That shit is so lame...but is so tight"
William Adama as soon as I read it, he said it lol
wow, what are the odds. same exact thing happened to me.
Love this guy's production. He has a unique ear for making smooth instrumentals!
Rony Arriaga Dude can RAP too!
Yours is better tho
Thumbs up for fucking Yoshi stage that made my day
Forehand Anhyzer i wonder who he mains
+Sweat James he's probably a skilled Roy
+Forehand Anhyzer MELEE
roys our boy
MBola l
props to jonwayne for having those good ears @2:46 about that yoshi song.
No cap
You guys should make a app that gives 3 random records and the youtube link to it so we can try to do Rhythm roulette
Shit that's a pretty good idea
Noize Hexagonz Yeah because I wanna do this but idk where i can find a random genre EP's
They finally did it
@Phony Mex yo man calm down. Some people just can't go buy vinyl and sample it. Just because you don't use vinyl doesn't mean you aren't a hip hop head.
@Phony MexYou actually dont understand culture at all if you think that not using vinyl is against hip hop culture.
please get knxwledge, Afta-1, and FlyLo if possible
knx? he's gonna make 12 beats in one video lmao.
No offense but FlyLo literally doesnt have the time for one of these. It'd be dope to see him working tho
yea true
afta-1 would be tight, played a few times with him, he's such a nice guy
I want to see Kev Brown on this joint too.
Its 2014. I don't understand why people are looking down on producers for using programs such as Ableton. As long as its heat who cares. Knxwledge makes all of his beats on Ableton but you would have never guessed it.
Some of the dopest tracks I heard were made in FL Studio....yeah, it's stupid to hate on the tools when it's the mind using them that's relevant.
CA ALL DAY I’m confused, every beat is made on a DAW. And Ableton is considered one of the top 3. Half the music on Spotify is made on Logic or Ableton. Major labels/studios use Pro Tools. But all are DAWs and do the same thing.
jason starek a lot of sample based producers use mpcs or asr 10s
@@qmurec The heated argument b/w Hardware vs Software officially ended back in 2008/9 with the arrival of Lex Luger. Also 9th Wonder had already made the first Little Brother album using only FL Studio (Still "fruityloops" at the time) and later a track on Jay-Z's album, so that solidified it for the boombap cats.
how the tables have turned lol now everyone uses ableton
What's with everyone hating on him using a computer? Hardware samplers do the same shit, just less efficiently.
Keith Hernandez i prefer using a mpc to sample, i would say its more efficient than using a daw to sample
LG personally i find that taking chops out of edison and fitting them in to the playlist is easier than timing chops and stretching them on an mpc. still a very amazing way to make beats and the effort is recognized on both ends
Can you imagine if Dilla was still alive and they did a Rhythm Roulette with him, that'd be crazy
I swear rhythm roulette is my love and hip-hop, I'm loving these videos.
I've heard him use the sample in the end. he actually put that out. i fucking love this dudes production
Where?
you know the name of it
Aaron A. Dubz Person how about no
Dave Acosta How about go fuck yaself'
Aaron A. Dubz Person real proffesional buddy. Now no ones gonna hear that garbage.
wow. just realized that was Ras G in the studio
What's that song? I need that in my playlist asap lol
RIP Ras G
R.I.P. Ras G
R.I.P. Ras G
Wish Dilla was alive.
DarkMatterBeatz I'm sure no matter what he would pick out, he'd be like "I think I have this record" for all 3
RIP Dilla. 🙏🏼
Rest easy you absolute legend
DarkMatterBeatz he could've done like 3 beats per vinyl
@@edenbeats.8569 honestly
SHTTIN ON PRODUCERS AND HE DIDN"T EVEN TOUCH A KEYBOARD!! DOPE!!
I'm not familiar with him but I like this dude. Mad chill.
Listen to Rap Album Two, amazing album
This is so dope, just bought 2 of this guys albums off this.
aikighost -Jonwayne is Stones Throw... can't go wrong with that. 🙏🏽
Denise R not any more he got beef with em now
5 years later. What he made from these records ended up being 🔥🔥🔥
this dude is like the everymans action Bronson. A little more lean, A little more clever, a little more relateable.
Also the stylistics record was fucking too nice
Action is luxurious, Jonwayne is inspired by Dilla and lives in experience
both are kings
wanna see knxledge get on rhythm roulette that shit would be so nice
yes yes yes.
soundcloud.com/knxwledge
this beat gave me chills. i wish i could produce. making music is basically a passion of mine, i just have no idea how lmao.
u download fruity loops
+ZerohFault Look up Korg Kaosillator
+dhbwpteam this is the truest shit in the world, "how do i make music?" "download fruity loops" LMFAO
+ZerohFault fruity loops youtube + busy work beats tutorials that a get you started on the path your welcome
+Chris Howard is he better then seamless
i keep on coming back to this video because it’s one of the best i’ve seen in the series. Jonwayne is damn talented - beats and bars.
Fucking finally someone didn't use soul because it felt like cheating! Props!
Well he did lol. The main part is from the soul track
+hill yer because it's increadibly easy to make hip hop out of soul music. i dont know why, but possibly because of the grooves and melodic elements.
+hill yer because they're stupid as hell. Use what the hell you wanna use and make it dope. The END!
+Drew Minatti lets listen to your dope ass beats than.
Because soul music is the essence of hip hop and r&b
Such a crisp sample . One of favorite rhythm roulettes so far
Been jamming Rap Album Two since I was recommended this guy. I had no idea he was producing most of his beats. Big ups Jonny Boy!
those drum patterns are goals
Didn't know the guy who owns my local MTG store was a badass producer.
I love Rhythm Roulette, but i keep finding myself coming back to this episode.
"i try to keep the essence of the original sample"
best advice for any upcoming producer
Love how they added in the Yoshi stage song for comparison, haha.
Say what you want...but this beat feels so right!
this is the tightest we heard on rhythem roulette! much love and respect to all the beat makers!
i love that he was like "this is cheating" then funks with it. lol
Didn’t even realize Ras G made a little appearance here at 1:18 Rest in paradise. (Shout out to his record store too poobah records) Man, he should’ve been on here!
Yo dat Yoshi's Island stage got mad samples
Still holds up as one of the best
I can see Ghostface rhyming over this beat
MADLIB MADLIB MADLIB
We need an episode with Oddisee!!!
This guy looks like SeamlessR's cooler older brother lol
Yeah, I see it! Lol!
That sh¡t it hilarious!!! I was thinking it was him...but couldn't remember the name. Lmfao
hahaha seamless' hip hop alter ego
YES! Holy shit! I've been trying to figure out who he reminded me of for weeks!
Both of them could be distant cousins of Rick Rubin XD
The Stylistics -"I Plead Guilty" = The Yoshi joint
Beat is dope af, I can listen to that loop all day.
Houston Texas yes sir! Same!
Should do one with Tyler. I'll bet he knows every record he picks lol
fr
Tyler is garbage
Tyler doesn't do sample beats he even said that he hates doing it
Doug NA$TY He did on a lot of his early stuff and the OF tapes. Not as common, but he might use very small samples every now and then in his new stuff
EightohEight plenty of samples on flower boy
My favourite beat outta all the Rhythm Roulette episodes. DEADASS
Try and get Knxwledge on Rhythm Roulette!!!!
PLEASE.
4 years and counting
Sadly Knxwledge said he didn't want to do this
@2:54 is Buckshot and 9th Wonder 'One For You' off the Formula Album.
How can somebody dislike man as chill and nice as Jonwayne. Guy is like a teddybear who was dropped to a barrel full of lean as a child.
I'm gonna just favourite this before I even watch it.
That beat is just so chilled! So smooth. i can hear Evidence on that!
It's impossible to not make heat with a Stylistics record! dope!
That Stylistics was fire!
i wanna thank you guys for showing me this amazing artist! been a fan since then
I be feenin for this shit right ere. Thanks Mass Appeal - fa sho. U provide a varied prospective from all KINDS of producer cats in the game, regardless of who they are and how they get down. Ur shit is real.
Jon, please extend it and release it, I find myself coming back to listen to it in the end
get a hologram j dilla on rhythm roulette
retweet
One of our favorites!
Lol dude looks like a High SeamlessR
Yo Sikander tell Slim to be up this bro Lmao
Years later and I still can't pinpoint an artist who be perfect for this beat. 🤔
Ghostface, maybe common 🤔
@@armandohaynes2303 early 2000s common would be dope on this beat.
what if you're on an on the go producer and you don't have time to be lugging around everything, and only got a laptop haha. Not everyone can damu the fudgemunk in the middle of the park! As long as it sounds good who cares how its made!
Thanks for the early birthday gift Mass Appeal an Jonwayniac ! Fuckin dope track
this beat is toooo dope i need tohear the whole thing
Came back to this after all these years. Still love watching wayne work.
Genius with the chop
Hippie Hagrid holds it down. Lol'd when he couldn't tie the bandana blindfold around his head and had to hold it with 1 hand. Nice showing and big salute for not going easy mode.
1:18 RIP RAS G
absolute master of the craft then and now. Jon do be makin beats.
Dude looks like a straight metalhead, but he is so chill. I like that.
metalheads are very chill dudes most of the time
Jonwayne always on beat
Giving the world a special treat to always appear neat
anything on any record can be sampled, but how can you expect to not get a sample from the stylistics? nice beat.
Best Beat I've Heard On The Roulette!!!!!!!
i want Primo for New Years.. ILLwait
preem won't give out his techniques
True that Preemo ain't giving up nothing
There's a video to how he made the beat to Classic... He literally used elevator music from some weird European country as the base of it.
Sampling is art man, plain and simple.
As someone who samples like a mad man, I honestly do some shortcuts here and there, but always make sure the sample and whatever cuts I got to make it are as creative as they can be, as well as naturally cut rather than cut up by some program or plugin.
agreed - seeing videos of people pressing a button to evenly slice a song into sections and using those as samples is so frustrating
he killed that beat
wish there was a place i could listen to this full song.
this sounds like a beat that sits in my recently opened files until I figure out the meat to put on that skeleton
same bro... but that most likely means we have lowkey hits on standby.... we are our biggest critics my man... i have learned over the years simple is just as effective my g... god bless
Real shit bro, yo comment just made me feel better as a beat maker/producer. Respect.
Did you pick the records at random tho
Yet he's a great artist and you're not?
Will A 😂😂😂😂
This man a fucking living underrated legend.
3:01 9th flipped that on a buckshot album
+marion johnson Right. "One For You," (Big Lou) off of The Formula
Yup...absolutely right
+Marion Johnson that was my fav track off the formula. buck sounded so emotional.
+henney_dykstra u right...it's my favorite too
Man I'm loving this you guys are just pumping them out keep them coming much respect I definitely get inspiration from them.
At 4:20, every Mac user suddenly looked around their computer like "What just happened?!"
Dude I wrote it and I still fall for it when I come back across this video haha
From the same basement of Madvillain and Quasimoto
We all know this will be gold
The hip/hop 2001 Peter Jackson Hurley hybrid
That last joint was smooth and knocked.
The Alchemist
this beat is mellow af
I wish this beat was actually able to hear full song.
me too
This has to be the dopest studio ive seen on here yet. Look at all that sweet gear!!!!!
Get Large Professor!! :D
Dope, Jowayne was just playing s... down he really bout the music man.
Respect for sharing bigg!!
this intro beat is so sick!
If you haven't found it already it's Gross - Jonwayne
His rhyming is even doper than his beats
The sample of gross sounds like the sample from the beat in the vid ?? maybe it's the 'other beat' but at the front but not the back like he mentioned @4:20 ?? COINCIDENCE ??
2024, still go back to this
Another good Roulette - keep 'em coming. But none of these producers ever stop their turntables - it really bugs me. LOL
This joint is super dope, that live with me sample is fiyah
The second beat had no right being that good
We’d love to see Stu bangas on the Rhythm Roulette show!!!
What’s up?!?!?
We need Aesop Rock, or Rob Sonic on here. I would be delighted to see there processes.
so Basic But So Raw. I like JonWayne sample beats cause thay kept the "Essence" of the song pretty much. No filter. Just Keep Tryin.
stones throw studio?
