Dude, the amount of time and knowledge it took to make all these pieces of equipment talk to eachother so perfectly is seriously impressive! I know a lot of producers are probably like "yeah, no biggie", but it's so cool to see how interactive your studio is!
it's called signal flow. doesn't take much knowledge to understand signal flow.. anyone can do it. you just need to take your time. audio is just electricity. you need to follow signal flow the same way you follow electrical flow.. it takes a little bit of problem solving and thought process and lots of patience. the worst thing you could do is rush through it and not pay attention to the ins and outs or plug in the old device that is damaged or damaging it yourself by not understanding what goes in and what goes out. I admit that this chap must have taken a bunch of time to ensure is vintage gear is properly functioning. the reel to reel recorder has more mechanical properties that would create audio artifact if it was running too slow or too fast.. has to be properly calibrated are you introduced things like flutter and a whole bunch of other crap I don't want to remember from the analog tape days. other than that, the microcosm I think would require a high z input maybe also output.. not sure if his other midi equip is sending a properly high impedance output.. that's about the only thing that would have me scratching my head.. but nothing the manual wouldn't sort out and a DI box wouldn't fix. but maybe it accepts a line levep signal. I don't know.. the rest is a piece of cake. you shouldn't dismiss your own ability simply because you're not familiar with the gear.. it's like sex. there's a hole for things to go IN and another hole in which other thing come OUT. ¯\_(ツ)_/¯

Holy shit man I found Wonka not long after you put it on Spotify and your music was a major part of my life for a few years after that, so cool that I’ve found your channel, immediately knew who you were the second I heard your voice ❤
Love the 388!! The one you have is in amazing condition! Mine was pretty abused before I got it and took some work to get it going, and is still going strong after almost 10 years. Really looking forward to seeing how you use it in your projects!
@@jonmakesbeats I couldn’t believe it when I saw mine, but for a much different reason… Let’s just say cleaning up the mud dauber wasp nests hiding on the circuit cards of it were the easiest part of getting it going… It is a pretty robust machine that definitely has a charm all its own, both in its sound and in its design. Looking forward to hearing your story about it and seeing how you end up using it. I think I can speak for most of your watchers in saying thank you for your transparency about your craft. It is authentic and’s a great model for other creators. Honestly, I would love to see more producers at your level putting their process out there in such a clean and digestible way. when i first subscribed to your channel i thought you were just another producer who uses a certain type of gear, i wanted to see the ocatrack in action, you delivered and so much more. The knowledge of gear you have and use the things too amazes me, keep em coming man!
I owned a 388 back when it was the scream of the industry. I jacked up the speed as you did, and hit the levels hard for penetration. Just a tiny bit of distortion makes the drums sound really fat and slutty. I've always felt that when you push the tracks on a good analog machine, without going into the red, you get the 'color' of the machine -- similar to what Tame Impala does with his plethora of analog machines. The 388 is great for that. The back side of that is -- as is with most domestic studio recording devices -- you have to contend with a certain amount of hiss. I found, especially with the 388, that dialing in a boost of 4 to 10 K directly on your tracks, it will reproduce a much cleaner signal. You have to watch it that you don't drive the highs too hard so you don't get that nasty sibilance distortion. The goal is to pull out the transparency from the tape, so it takes some trial and error. You can pull back the highs just a bit during mix-down, and see what I mean. You lose the noise that way. I wish I could get my hands on another one. I cut a lot of professional records on that thing. Its sonic characteristics are amazing. And it was built to last. I can't wait until we see more professional analog machines in the future. Coming from an old pro, I stand with those who believe that analog is better. The 388 is the perfect machine for any beginner using analog.
Saw that tascam 388 in the background of a previous video of yours. Have lusted after these for a while. So nice to see it in action. Looking forward to the dedicated 388 video and back story.
Pssshh, yeah, ridiculously awesome. I've been salivating over the idea of getting a 388 for a couple years now. So damn smooth and warm. Great stuff, man. Love your channel.
man, the 388 has been one of my holy grail gear items since forever. Glad you were able to get your hands on one, you're one of my favorite producers since back when you did bowser
I was thinking of getting a helix pedal by line 6 but I see the beauty of Jon’s multi fx chroma console because the knobs make the workflow SO easy and fast to dial in a nice effect with finesse. Really thought out and powerful to have instead of menu diving into a multi fx pedal.
A few years ago I was about to buy one of these for like 400 bucks, and thought it was too expensive. But I only knew about it because of this Shawn Lee video, and soon after that the prices of them shot up like crazy!
Tascam made... still makes they type of gear that goes chronically unappreciated until just before or long after they've quit making it. The model 12 made me regret holding onto my x32 for those extra 4 years when i discovered it.
I've just got an Tascam 246 for free. Had to open it up, clean it and renew some stuff. Now it is working and I'm so excited about it's potential! Can't wait for the tapemaschine-episode!!! The timing couldn't be better! 👌
This was the first video of yours I saw, and gotta say, you make top notch stuff. All that quality gear goes to good use :D I hear some mellow rapping on this in my head.
Awesome! Bought a refurb Tascam 414 last year and use it a lot either for resampling or running tracks through. Sure it slows the process down, but love the sound and it is somehow fun doing retro things lol.
Mechanical effects are great with chunky mids. Any sound effects that sound like a switch and a post tape catch or just get an acoustic sample of the button sounds and then I dub it in.
That sounded really cool, I like the vibe. I've been making music a long time. Started out on tape and still use it along with digital but analog hardware, tape and vinyl are definitely my first loves.
Ah-ah ! I'm totally in joy : just understand Your the Jon Wayne of that record I've bought in Brest , France, there 's 8 years... It was a perido very important for me, starting composing music after art school... Héhé, cool ! Nice works man...
